When this song first came out, I was young and really didn't grasp what he was singing about; like maybe doing somebody wrong and then trying to dance with the consequences, but now...for as quality as George Michael could sing, he could be talking about the rounds for a dumpster driver on a typical work day and it still would be a hit.

George’s words about the creation of the song (he was 17):
"I was on my way to DJ at the Bel Air when I wrote 'Careless Whisper'. I have always written on buses, trains and in cars. It always happens on journeys.
With 'Careless Whisper' I remember EXACTLY where it first came to me, where I came up with the sax line. I can remember very vaguely where I was when I wrote things after Wham! got off the ground, but with 'Careless Whisper' I remember exactly the time and place.
"I know it sounds really weird and a kind of romantic thing to say, but I remember exactly where it happened, where I was sitting on the bus, how I continued and everything. I remember I was handing the money over to the guy on the bus and I got this line, the sax line: der-der-der-der, der-der-der-der.
"Then he moved away and I continued writing it in my head. I wrote it totally in my head. I worked on it for about three months in my head."

what an amazing person George was, he wrote this song when he was 16/ 17 , he wrote the music and the lyrics..... fun fact here...after Aretha Franklin heard that George had wrote this song himself, she asked him to write a song for her and at the time he was still unsure of himself and said no.... when he had decided to go solo and was still with Wham! , he approached Clive Davis and asked to do a duet with one of his artists for his first solo song and that is where I Knew You Were Waiting came from ...his duet with Aretha !

Nothing says 80s blue-eyed soul like George Michael... This song was #1 for a reason.. It spoke to a lot of people and was part of a wave of 80s ballads that defined a genre for Gen Xers to fall in love with. Remember the 80s were the only decade not to have seen a big war for nearly half a century so there was a big focus on relationships and building a family for the future.
Even though I was basically a Hard Rock guy in the 70s and 80s, the ballads were great to give your ears a rest after hours of having them pounded by guitar riffs and backbeats... not to mention the ladies in those days seemed to appreciate guys who liked to mix it up a bit. 😉

Every slow dance my entire high school life.
Every mix tape left at my door.
Don't let the collars fool you. The 80/90s had a lot of sentimental guys.

WHAM!!! Another great singer!! For a long time, I never knew he sang 'Last Christmas.' I would just hear it about that time of year. Here's my take on the song. The lady that was running up the steps of the jet, found him with the woman who was on the yacht, gettin' their groove on. Since he was caught, his 'careless whispers' (messing around) was no longer a secret. So, he would never dance (mess around) again, because he had 'guilty feet' that was walking with the wrong lady.

This is probably the sexiest song of the 80s, IMO. I still love it. The sax solo ranks very high with me! I've always loved this sax solo AND the one in Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street".

Story of Careless Whisper- The song was mainly inspired by two different girls named Jane and Helen:
"When I was twelve, thirteen, I used to have to chaperone my sister, who was two years older, to an ice rink at Queensway in London. There was a girl there with long blond hair whose name was Jane.
"I was a fat boy in glasses and I had a big crush on her -though I didn't stand a chance. My sister used to go and do what she wanted when we got to the skating rink and I would spend the afternoon swooning over this girl Jane.
"A few years later, when I was sixteen, I had my first relationship with a girl called Helen. It had just started to cool off a bit when I discovered that the blonde girl from Queensway had moved in just around the corner from my school.
"She had moved in right next to where I used to stand and wait for my next-door neighbour, who used to give me a lift home from school. And one day I saw her walk down the path next to me and I thought - now where did SHE come from? She didn't know it was me.

"It was a few years later and I looked a lot different. Then we played a school disco with [his band] The Executive and she saw me singing and decided she fancied me. By this time she was that much older and a big buxom thing - and eventually I started seeing her. She invited me in one day when I was waiting for my lift and I was...in heaven."
Explaining that after he stopped wearing glasses, he began getting invited to parties, he continued: "And the girl who didn't even see me when I was twelve invited me in. So I went out with her for a couple of months but I didn't stop seeing Helen. I thought I was being smart - I had gone from being a total loser to being a two-timer.
"And I remember my sisters used to give me a hard time because they found out and they really liked the first girl. The whole idea of 'Careless Whisper' was the first girl finding out about the second - which she never did.
"But I started another relationship with a girl called Alexis without finishing the one with Jane. It all got a bit complicated. Jane found out about her and got rid of me... The whole time I thought I was being cool, being this two-timer, but there really wasn't that much emotion involved. I did feel guilty about the first girl - and I have seen her since - and the idea of the song was about her.
"'Careless Whisper' was us dancing, because we danced a lot, and the idea was - we are dancing...but she knows...and it's finished

It’s hard to believe that there are people that haven’t been graced by this song before. This is the kind of song that transcends time, genres and every corner of the globe.

I went to the first night of Wham's Club Fantastic tour on October the 9th 1983 in Aberdeen Scotland. It was the very first time Wham played live. Wham was the due he was in with Andrew Ridgeley. I wasn't really a fan but I went with my cousin, her sister and her friend. But I did think his live singing was amazing. By the time he sang this song I was a fan. This was the first time I think anyone other than the people who helped George record this song heard it. I just thought his voice was wonderful singing this live. And he was only about 20 at the time. So you could say I was one of the first ever people to hear this fantastic song as it only came out as a single in the summer of 1984.
