WOW, what a gig. They had the BEST light shows to their music of any group I saw (Pink Floyd, ELP, anyone). Everything seems so well timed, thought out and engineered. I always wondered how much the band did with the production. I expect they did a lot with the concept and just signed on great people to work it out. Quality.

@@cherylb9230 Please thank him for me too. Genesis was the best show I've ever seen. Musically they were amazing but the lighting was pure lightning in a bottle. It matched the tone and the mood so perfectly and transported you so much that it was a shock when the lights came up after the show.

Indeed, it was my private drum teacher who told me about that when I was like 14 in the 90's. He just said, deadpan, Kurt, (and this was before TH-cam or even the internet), check out some old Genesis. I was still on my Bill Bruford Yes/King Crimson kick so I never did, but Phil Collins indeed had some chops.

I see a lot of react videos seeming so surprised about tracks like this or Smells Like Teen Spirit. These songs were still played everywhere when I was a kid (early 2000s), so people my age who react and say they've never heard these songs before just raise my eyebrows in suspicion.

Hell, yes. Phil Collins is a legend.. I've been able to see Phil live 4 times and his live performances are amazing. He's also an amazing drumner, vocalist and songwriter. This song is iconic. It's cool and Phil Collin's still stands in 2020.
Actually being at his live performance of this tour, when this song started, you could literally feel the tension in the air building in waves. When he hit the skins, the place exploded! Everybody was up! Phenomenal artist! 👍🏼
And he plays that signature tune the same way every time, the slow walkup to the drumkit while he's singing to purposely build the anticipation for the explosive drums.

Phil was a true artist. Perfect voice, great stage presence, incredible song writer and great musician! He had it all! I say “had” because he’s now retired.

And then the realization of the origins for the song creeps in, and the sensations are multiplied a thousand times.
I was getting anxiety knowing the epic drum solo was coming up and he wasn't even near them. I was like, "C'mon Phil, you're gonna miss it!!!" Then like a boss, he slides right in seamlessly.
Imagine watching Miami Vice with Sunny and Tubbs on the way to a dangerous bust, driving that black Ferrari and this song is playing in the background and becoming louder and more dominate as they drove down the highway. Awesome,
The song was used in the pilot episode of “Miami Vice” and is the exact moment that launched the show into what it would become! It literally change the way Music would be used in TV shows from that moment on!

@ I think it was Phil that suggested to the others after Peter left that they just continue on as an instrumental band, because they had already composed strong musical tracks with Dance on a Volcano, Los Endos, etc. The others rejected that as they (esp Banks) knew they were also strong songwriters. But you can hear in Los Endos, the intrumental bridges of Ripples, Mad Man Moon, RAB, and Entangled how strong and jamming an instrumental Genesis could have been. Still, they probably made the right choice since Trick and Wind & W became their biggest selling albums over all the Gabriel albums, even without any hit radio singles.....

Soling106 David Grohl was the drummer for Nirvana turned frontman for the Foo Fighters. He said there’s a reason drummers are drummers, they don’t like the spotlight. They like the back of the stage. Being out front can be Terrifying. A large part of Karen Carpenters anorexia was always worrying if she looked good enough to be out front. She really just wanted To sit in the back and drum and sing.
Phil has been the biggest inspiration for why I play the drums. And Chester Thompson, his drummer when Phil isn't playing, is just as amazing on drums. His whole band is amazing. When I first saw him I lost my freaking mind when the drums pop up at the top of the stage and he started playing that part.
I was at the concert, I nearly passed out from shear anticipation as he was approaching the drums because I knew what was coming, my Daughter was with me and she didn't and was looking at me funny till after the song then she was real silent and turned from me, I made her look at me me and she was Literally in tears. :) The Man is now and always will be One of the true Legends of rock.

Phil was a world class drummer, just the drummer, in the early days of Genesis. When Peter Gabriel quit, after auditioning singers the guys told him just to sing. Early jazz influences, and he plays left handed. He's quite an amazing man.
A thousand years from now they'll still be listening to this song and being completely blown away. His best song in my opinion and one of the greatest rock songs of all time. Timeless. It's also a true story: Collins wrote this song about the anger he felt after divorcing his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli, in 1980 - he was so devastated that he left Genesis for a short time. All of the original songs on the Face Value album, including the followup hit "I Missed Again," were at one time intended to be "messages" to his first wife in an attempt to lure her back to him. The lingering tension caused by the divorce led Collins to the title, as these negative feelings were "In The Air," and affecting not just the couple getting divorced, but the entire family.
This song will forever remind me of one of the most iconic scenes in television history....Sonny Crocket driving that Ferrari through the deserted streets of Miami in the pilot episode of Miami Vice. Incredible song!

This song was a huge staple of the 80s both before, and after it was used in the Miami Vice television series. It basically had a double life, before it ever had a chance to die out. And has lived strong ever since. I had a friend in high school named Colin, and I used to call him Phil all the time after an incident where he was drumming on the walls of the school dark room while the teachers were having a meeting in the other room. :D
He was talking about early Genesis. When they were prog rock band! Phil on drums better than Neil imo! Listen to The Cinema Show by Genesis. Genesis in 70s were the best prog rock band and back then Phil even did not know that he has vocal. He was monstrous drummer.
I love to watch this man react. You can tell he truly loves music and to be entertained and those are his main criteria for watching a music video. Phil always has a top notch band. The bass player with him is Leland Sklar. He has recorded on about 2000 songs for many artists. One of the best ever. By the way Phil can’t read music but he sure knows how to write it in his own way.

I can't tell you how happy it makes me feel to see your joy when watching some of my favourite music. I saw Phil live early 2019, and although he isn't well enough to play drums anymore, his voice is still great, and his 17yr old son did a stellar job playing the drums for that show. Keep up the good work!
When he was with Genesis, another great was I Can't Dance. His solo work is all good i got a wish list to see you do. "Against All Odds", "Take Me Home", "Sussudio", "Another Day in Paradise", and "True Colors".
Stéphane Chamberland I can't disagree with you more. It certainly wasn't the best, and it was overplayed for sure, thanks to the silly video they released for it in the heyday of MTV and VH1. It's just a fun song they did. Kinda like "Jesus, He Knows Me". It wasn't groundbreaking nor an innovative show of musical or vocal prowess... it was just a really talented band having fun while taking a stab at social hypocrisy. They weren't taking themselves too seriously with either song, and that's an attractive thing for a band to do when they're on top of the world. All hits can't be mind-blowing. And while this subject is largely contingent on perspective, I'd have to say the worst songs made under the Genesis' name was some of the earlier more looney experimental stuff helmed by Peter Gabriel, when he was a large influence on their direction, and he was getting bored with popular music and doing some pretty weird stuff. I loved Gabriel's first decade or two of solo work, but I didn't enjoy but only a few really good songs he did during Genesis.

Fun Fact time, Jamel: did you know that that particular drum sound was originated by accident during the recordings of Peter Gabriel's 1979 self-titled album? Phil Collins was the drummer in that record and as he was playing the drums his beats were accidentally picked up by the microphone used by audio engineers to talk to the band from the control room. That microphone wasn’t meant to record music and its heavy compressors were designed to turn down loud sounds while amplifying quiet ones. It also used a noise gate in the mic's signal chain, which meant the captured sounds were cut off shortly after they were picked up. The result was a bright, fleeting percussive sound unlike anything heard in popular music until that moment. Peter loved the effect, and made it the signature sound on the opening track of his album. A year later, Phil featured it in this song and the rest is history. : )
Yep. Genesis was originally led by Peter Gabriel for about 5 albums, then when he went solo Phil Collins came in and still leads Genesis today - as well as having a concurrent solo and acting career. Lots of AMAZING music came out of Genesis since the 70s

One thing comes to mind whenever I hear this song. "Miami Vice." Don Johnson driving down the Beach side avenue in that Ferrari, or whatever he was driving, about to have a showdown with some Bad ass Colombian cocaine dealers . He knows there is a good chance he won't live through it, if they discover he's an undercover cop. A classic scene in television history. It gives you goosebumps.

Absolutely. That's what makes this song so amazing. Jann Wimer(sp?) the music composer for MV asked (I think) Phil to do a song for that scene. I'm sure neither Phil or Jann thought it would become a hit but boy did it. MV was the ish in its day and the soundtrack was the bomb. I bought the soundtrack album - it was that good. Yes, they really put out a soundtrack album for MV, which I think is rare for television.

Hey, Jamal! I came across your show this evening and spent the whole evening listening to your “reaction” sets. I’m a 68 (yep! 68) year old retired teacher. I grew up listening to many of the tunes you played tonight. When I was teaching, I had a long commute and my kids & I listened to Top 40 music and sang out our lungs!in my classes, I would play music from the time period or the place we were learning about. If the kids were quiet and working, I’d let them listen to the radio. Music connects us. It tells the story of our time. It keeps me young at heart. In my sociology class, Friday’s were known to be Free Flow Friday’s”, and volunteers would rhyme and flow. It was so beautiful! We had awards for the most Audacious Rhyme-just a xeroxed certificate that was treasured by the recipient. Oh, I enjoyed listening to your commentary on “In The Air Tonight” every kid in class could throw down that drum solo on his desk!🙂 I wasn’t that the concert that your video was from, but I did see that concert. Amazing! And as you said, The Air That Night set the mood (even if it wasn’t 4/20!😉). Thanks for making an old woman feel younger by playing the songs of my youth!

I think it was Phil that suggested to the others after Peter left that they just continue on as an instrumental band, because they had already composed strong musical tracks with Dance on a Volcano, Los Endos, etc. The others rejected that as they (esp Banks) knew they were also strong songwriters. But you can hear in Los Endos, the intrumental bridges of Ripples, Mad Man Moon, RAB, and Entangled how strong and jamming an instrumental Genesis could have been. Still, they probably made the right choice since Trick and Wind & W became their biggest selling albums over all the Gabriel albums, even without any hit radio singles.....

Phil has been the biggest inspiration for why I play the drums. And Chester Thompson, his drummer when Phil isn't playing, is just as amazing on drums. His whole band is amazing. When I first saw him I lost my freaking mind when the drums pop up at the top of the stage and he started playing that part.
I was at the concert, I nearly passed out from shear anticipation as he was approaching the drums because I knew what was coming, my Daughter was with me and she didn't and was looking at me funny till after the song then she was real silent and turned from me, I made her look at me me and she was Literally in tears. :) The Man is now and always will be One of the true Legends of rock.

@@michaelhealy1825 Yes, it was great. he is an incredible showmen. However, Her Favorite memory was her first concert ever. I took her to see the Moody Blues live in the Gorge amphitheater in Washington state down on the Columbia River. It was spectacular.

Phil was a world class drummer, just the drummer, in the early days of Genesis. When Peter Gabriel quit, after auditioning singers the guys told him just to sing. Early jazz influences, and he plays left handed. He's quite an amazing man.
I saw Phil back in April 1997, when he played a show in Champaign, IL. This song was pure awesome then, and it's only gotten better with age.
A thousand years from now they'll still be listening to this song and being completely blown away. His best song in my opinion and one of the greatest rock songs of all time. Timeless.
It's also a true story:
Collins wrote this song about the anger he felt after divorcing his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli, in 1980 - he was so devastated that he left Genesis for a short time. All of the original songs on the Face Value album, including the followup hit "I Missed Again," were at one time intended to be "messages" to his first wife in an attempt to lure her back to him.
The lingering tension caused by the divorce led Collins to the title, as these negative feelings were "In The Air," and affecting not just the couple getting divorced, but the entire family.
This song will forever remind me of one of the most iconic scenes in television history....Sonny Crocket driving that Ferrari through the deserted streets of Miami in the pilot episode of Miami Vice. Incredible song!

Phil Collins is one of the best rock drummers of all time. His drumming on the Genesis album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974) is phenomenal.
Have never had any song ever that gives me goosebumps like this song. Every phucking time, and have been listening to it for over 20 years.
This song was a huge staple of the 80s both before, and after it was used in the Miami Vice television series.
It basically had a double life, before it ever had a chance to die out. And has lived strong ever since.
I had a friend in high school named Colin, and I used to call him Phil all the time after an incident where he was drumming on the walls of the school dark room while the teachers were having a meeting in the other room. :D
Neil Peart, of Rush, when he heard Phil Collins on drums said "So that's how good you need to be now". That's a story Neil told.

I love to watch this man react. You can tell he truly loves music and to be entertained and those are his main criteria for watching a music video. This one was especially fun, waiting for the build along with him and getting chills from the showmanship and drums kicking in.

Phil always has a top notch band. The bass player with him is Leland Sklar. He has recorded on about 2000 songs for many artists. One of the best ever.

I can't tell you how happy it makes me feel to see your joy when watching some of my favourite music. I saw Phil live early 2019, and although he isn't well enough to play drums anymore, his voice is still great, and his 17yr old son did a stellar job playing the drums for that show. Keep up the good work!
When he was with Genesis, another great was I Can't Dance. His solo work is all good i got a wish list to see you do. "Against All Odds", "Take Me Home", "Sussudio", "Another Day in Paradise", and "True Colors".

It certainly wasn't the best, and it was overplayed for sure, thanks to the silly video they released for it in the heyday of MTV and VH1.
It's just a fun song they did. Kinda like "Jesus, He Knows Me". It wasn't groundbreaking nor an innovative show of musical or vocal prowess... it was just a really talented band having fun while taking a stab at social hypocrisy. They weren't taking themselves too seriously with either song, and that's an attractive thing for a band to do when they're on top of the world.
All hits can't be mind-blowing.
And while this subject is largely contingent on perspective, I'd have to say the worst songs made under the Genesis' name was some of the earlier more looney experimental stuff helmed by Peter Gabriel, when he was a large influence on their direction, and he was getting bored with popular music and doing some pretty weird stuff.
I loved Gabriel's first decade or two of solo work, but I didn't enjoy but only a few really good songs he did during Genesis.
Collins used to be an excellent drummer. Then sold out. And divorced his first wife by email. He’s a piece of shit in my book.

Fun Fact time, Jamel: did you know that that particular drum sound was originated by accident during the recordings of Peter Gabriel's 1979 self-titled album? Phil Collins was the drummer in that record and as he was playing the drums his beats were accidentally picked up by the microphone used by audio engineers to talk to the band from the control room. That microphone wasn’t meant to record music and its heavy compressors were designed to turn down loud sounds while amplifying quiet ones. It also used a noise gate in the mic's signal chain, which meant the captured sounds were cut off shortly after they were picked up. The result was a bright, fleeting percussive sound unlike anything heard in popular music until that moment.
Peter loved the effect, and made it the signature sound on the opening track of his album. A year later, Phil featured it in this song and the rest is history. : )

Yep. Genesis was originally led by Peter Gabriel for about 5 albums, then when he went solo Phil Collins came in and still leads Genesis today - as well as having a concurrent solo and acting career. Lots of AMAZING music came out of Genesis since the 70s

My dad's favorite singer. I remember I didn't like his music growing up because I didn't have a great relationship with my dad. But now I actually appreciate his music. Against all odds is another great song.

Don Johnson driving down the Beach side avenue in that Ferrari, or whatever he was driving, about to have a showdown with some Bad ass Colombian cocaine dealers . He knows there is a good chance he won't live through it, if they discover he's an undercover cop. A classic scene in television history. It gives you goosebumps.

Absolutely. That's what makes this song so amazing. Jann Wimer(sp?) the music composer for MV asked (I think) Phil to do a song for that scene. I'm sure neither Phil or Jann thought it would become a hit but boy did it. MV was the ish in its day and the soundtrack was the bomb. I bought the soundtrack album - it was that good. Yes, they really put out a soundtrack album for MV, which I think is rare for television.

Hey, Jamal! I came across your show this evening and spent the whole evening listening to your “reaction” sets. I’m a 68 (yep! 68) year old retired teacher. I grew up listening to many of the tunes you played tonight. When I was teaching, I had a long commute and my kids & I listened to Top 40 music and sang out our lungs!in my classes, I would play music from the time period or the place we were learning about. If the kids were quiet and working, I’d let them listen to the radio. Music connects us. It tells the story of our time. It keeps me young at heart. In my sociology class, Friday’s were known to be Free Flow Friday’s”, and volunteers would rhyme and flow. It was so beautiful! We had awards for the most Audacious Rhyme-just a xeroxed certificate that was treasured by the recipient.
Oh, I enjoyed listening to your commentary on “In The Air Tonight” every kid in class could throw down that drum solo on his desk!🙂 I wasn’t that the concert that your video was from, but I did see that concert.
