  • The guys at Eastwood show you how to chemically remove rust and keep the metal clean until you paint it.
    Get Rust Dissolver: www.eastwood.com/rust-remover-...
    Get After Blast: www.eastwood.com/ew-after-blas...
    Eastwood Rust Dissolver removes rust without metal-eating acid. Our acid-free Rust Dissolver removes only the rust, and won't eat-away at the metal itself. Leaves the newly de-rusted metal ready to paint, plate or powder-coat.
    Acid-free
    Gentle enough for engine parts
    Reusable
    Removes about 5 sq. ft. of rust per quart
    It will penetrate deep into the metal dissolving the rust in a few hours. Leaves metal ready to paint, plate or powder coat. So gentle, it’s suitable for engine parts and is harmless to copper, brass, aluminum, solder, lead, plastic, rubber, seals, wood, and vinyl. Will not remove sound paint.
    Liquid rust Dissolver works as long as the surface is wet. Items that cannot be fully immersed due to size can be placed in the discharge stream of a commonly available small pump. One gallon de-rusts about 20 square feet of metal. The gel adheres to vertical surfaces and dissolves rust without having to submerse the metal in a tub or bucket. Ideal for quarter-panels, fenders and other vertical surfaces.
    Use "After Blast" after blasting or sanding metal, then paint, prime or powder-coat.
    Spray, wipe and repeat until clean
    Aqueous cleaners and phosphoric acid clean and etch the metal
    Zinc phosphate coating improves paint, primer or powder adhesion
    Also protects against flash corrosion
    After Blast cleans, degreases and etches just-blasted or newly-sanded metal to improve adhesion for painting, priming or powder-coating.

    2 questions actually
    1- would you recommend the same process with surface rust on sockets and wrenches?
    2- can this process be used as spraying on underside of my truck?

    True question could you put the rust dissolve in a pump sprayer and keep the area wet for and hr or so and would you see results??

    • @eastwoodco
      @eastwoodco  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rust dissolver is designed to work over a longer period of time. Overnight is all you'll need in most cases. We recommend either submerging your parts in a bath, or you can brush the gel on and cover it with some saran wrap.
      For quicker results, check out our Fast Etch.

    Would the liquid form be safe in common plastic containers? At the extreme end, I wonder if somebody could fill their cooling system with this and let it sit to clean everything. lol

    With the phosphoric coating left behind , can I TIG/MIG weld it?

    • @deankay4434
      @deankay4434 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Steve Friedlander I have had no issues welding over a dried Fast Etch coating. I am a retired ASE Master tech and the 150A MIG I bought in 1984 works great using smaller gauge wire (0.30") on sheet metal lap-joints, plug welds and off-set flange joints I had sprayed with Fast Etch. I believe the remaining phosphoric coating is very thin film and presents not problem during welding. I do recommend a "Weld-Thru" spray coating on top of the Fast Etch (On the weld area & above - where heat transfers to) that helps prevent future rust. If I can get to the back side, I will spray a cold galvanize (CRC), then I will coat with a special spray gun / long hose setup w/tips, using a 3M type thin oily rust proof material inside the panel when done. When the rustproof material sets up & dries, I will wipe off anything that drips out drain holes / overspray with "Pre Clean" before painting. Lacquer thinner or Acetone will work also, but always use a proper Pre Clean product & tack rag before filler, primer or anything else goes on. It is amazing how many videos show metal repair on high dollar project cars & trucks, but they never talk about or show rust proofing inside as welding by nature accelerates the rusting inside and next to the joint. Just using a belt & suspenders approach in the rusty Midwest.

    Go to a Chemical Supply House and explain that you are removing iron oxide from a surface. They will be able to mix an acetic acid solution for a lot less money than these products. Vinegar has 0.4 percent acetic acid by volume. A 10 percent by volume acetic acid mix will do fine to remove rust from most surfaces. I used this mix to remove rust on small window panes and their steel framework in old school welding shops and foundries back in the day. Was done yearly to improve light level in those shops. Was more cost effective than replacing hundreds of small window panes. Applied with brush or sprayer you could see the rust dissolve from the framework and glass. Washed solution and residue off panes with ammonia. Then a final rinse with a water hose. Have used same acetic acid solution on sheet metal rust followed with an ammonia rinse and had good results.

      Have you considered Rust Encapsulator or Rubberized Rust Encapsulator which combines encapsulator and undercoating? Here's a link and you can also contact an Eastwood Tech to discuss the project in detail to make sure you get the right tools. 800-343-9353 - www.eastwood.com/eastwood-black-rust-encapsulator-paint-over-rust.html

      If you have to do a dunk. It would be for a total restoration job. If you have missing metal, you can buy parts such as rocker panels, floor boards, and miscellaneous parts.
