Ducati doesn’t want you to do this to your DesertX

  • The new DesertX makes adjusting the shift lever for better off road ergonomics easy; the manual just wont tell you about it.

    Thank you for pointing that out, I have to say Ducati have put so much detail into this bike.

    That was the first thing I changed on my Desert X. Even when I was still at the dealer and picked it up. They only gave me the tools, but of course I did it myself. Love it!

      I was fully prepared to mess with the shift linkage and hope there was enough adjustment range with the quick shift sensor. This is one of those little details that shows they really put thought into riding off road. Still a little surprised it’s not documented in the owners manual, at least not the US version I grabbed off the website.

    I have honestly thought about getting a Desert X... but the air filter needing a tank removal killed it for me, as living here in Alaska we need to change out the Air filters fairly frequently because of the fine silt, and wood smoke from forest fires. They obviously thought about so may things to improve the experience (such as your video here shows), but the Air filter placement just ruins it for field replacements on the road.

      It's a 20 minute operation.. don't seems to.bad for me.. it's the same time that I Need for a shower

      @@alberto-cg7ox Correct sir! It pisses me off how this nonsense even starts from DIY graduates of TH-cam, and then regurgitated over and over...

    The air filter thing is not a big deal. I had a GS1200 and it would take 20 minutes to clean it. The desert X is about an hour once you have done it a couple of times and it's not something you do every month. The greatest improvement I made was change the exhaust. It transformed the bike into what the engine was supposed to be. Easy 10% + more HP and torque under 4000 RPM.

      I’m skipping the Termi, but will likely slap on the Arrow mid pipe. Going to run the stock can until it’s spent.
      I am also not that concerned with the air filter. I cleaned it on my Multi enduro and the tank on that thing was MASSIVE.
      FortNine just dropped a great video and also called out Ducati on the “visit an authorized service center” thing.

    The don't want you to change your own oil, your air filter or even adjust your own chain either. They expect you to take it to the dealer. Ridiculous

      I was mostly making a joke about the manual not covering such a simple operation BUT there is definitely a conversation to be had about user serviceability, dealer/manufacturer relationships, and the growing pains Ducati is going to face pointing a bike at the off road community.
      I did a quick search and “Ducati Dealer or Authorized Service Center” pops up 18 times in the US DesertX owners manual; I’m pretty sure there’s a solid meme or sticker idea in there.

    So, I have a DesertX and I did the same thing that you did. Unfortunately, the shifting wasn’t as smooth after I changed the position of the lever. Called the dealer and he called Ducati. As per the Ducati tech, if you change the position of the lever, further adjustments are needed in the linkage above. So, I changed it back to the original position. 🤷🏾‍♂️

      It doesn't change anything besides the position of the lever. There is also the auto-calibration routine for the quickshifter.

    Even with that tiny raise how does an offroad boot fit under?

    • @fronzenjonasconcentrate
      @fronzenjonasconcentrate  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It made a pretty big difference. I’m wearing Tech5’s currently and in the low position I’d have to nearly take my foot off the peg and go around and under to get to the shift lever. After switching holes the lever is right about where I’d expect it to be and I don’t have to contort my ankle to get it. If I can find time I’ll see about making a comparison while on the bike in boots.

    I can't deal with big off road boots..... I just wear touring boots. They have been fine. Problem solved 🙂

      @fronzenjonasconcentrate  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Depends on the problem you’re trying to solve 🤷‍♂️ i wear touring or normal ADV boots for graded roads or BDR type stuff, but heavy enduro/MX boots have saved my feet and ankles on gnarly trails enough times they’ve generally become a preference for most off-pavement rides. Especially on 500 pound ADV bikes.

    I believe you have to take the tank off to clean the air filter and take it to the deaaler to do such.Stupid.No sale here.

  • @angelite143

    How are you gonna do that on the fly when you're probably hundreds of miles from the nearest dealer, let alone a workshop?

    • @fronzenjonasconcentrate
      @fronzenjonasconcentrate  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      How am I going to do what on the fly? Change the shift lever height? It took less than five minutes with a 10mm wrench and a 6mm hex bit; using the tools I carry whenever I go beyond town.
