Rich Mullins lived his life according to God’s. He donated every penny he made. His only possession was his jeep. He showed up unannounced at churches and radio stations to sing Gods praises. His songs are still stirring and poignant. His faith never wavered. Rich lived his faith and shared God’s love with anyone and everyone.

My wife and I and my two children had the privilege of seeing him twice in concert which was incredible, came out with an old ragged shirt and pants and barefoot. He reminded me of a modern day Paul of the New Testament. After the concert was over we would drive straight to the bible book store where he was doing meet and greets. We all got to shake his hand and have him sign a little booklet. I was surprised about how rough his hand felt as I shook his hand and looked the man in his eyes which were eyes that were full of the love of God, there was always a peace about him. I know we aren't supposed to put any man upon a pedestal, but you couldn't help but instantly love the man. This man of God who spoke the truth and seemed to run headlong into God's embrace. I have never met a man like him since and I was so devastated to hear on the radio the morning after his death. The Christian radio station in Dallas, TX interrupted their normal programming and I was able to tape three hours of interviews and songs with Rich Mullins. I later digitized it and still have it on my iPod and my computer. I remember before I was able to digitize it, I contacted the radio station to see if they were going to release that very special tribute to Rich Mullins the very next day after he was killed. They wrote back and said they wouldn't be able to release it and gave their reason which I cannot remember what the reason was. I think because it had several full songs by Rich and they couldn't release it without consent. I guess they still haven't released it because every once in a while I search and search the internet, but have yet to find that tribute to Rich that Saturday morning when I learned of his death just the day before. That is okay, I am glad I have it to listen to from time-to-time. It is very special because it occurred at the same time I heard he had been killed and I was truly in a state of shock and was sad because I knew he had so much more music to make and I was looking forward to seeing him in concert again. I just couldn't believe he was gone. I truly feel blessed we were able to see him play, sing, and when he spoke to the audience, it really felt like he was speaking from his heart. I'm so glad that TH-cam has so many videos of him playing a lot of my favorites live. These live videos take me back to those concerts and I feel truly blessed to have been able to see him live and then actually shake his hand and I would compliment him and he would graciously say "Thank you" and would ask me my name and sign the little booklet. The videos take me back to where we sat and watched him. He would have a few moments of just singing worship songs. We would drive over the bible book store where he would greet everyone and give his signature. I remember when finally getting to the small table he was sitting at, I shook his hand and looked into those seemingly tired eyes, but loving eyes. It was absolutely worth the wait. When he signed the small booklet I assumed was put together by Rich or somebody for Rich. He signed it both times simply with the words: "Be Gods... Rich". I still have those booklets today, saved in a special place. I loved the man and love his heart, his music, and his words. I hope to see you again someday, Rich! The next time I see you, instead of a handshake I will embrace you as a brother.

I saw him in 92 at the Broncho Bowl in Dallas. I saw him second time in Arlington at a church. I think that was 94. He did a meet and greet after at a Christian book store.
I got there before him and wated around with my girlfriend. I remember John Rivers from KLTY was there. I was close to the entrance when he walked in. I remember thinking he looked uncomfortable. Later I learned he preferred to just be a humble servant. He wasn't big on the all the attention.
He was a very unique person to say the least. His music and concerts were also very unique.
I still remember the moment I heard about his death. I wish he would have been around many more years giving us his great music, but God took him home.

So glad I grew up, listening to Christian music in this particular era so much commercialism has craft in as expected, but as a young Christian, the authenticity and a pureness of music like this, put me in a position where I could be still and see Christ in the way that Rich portrayed him in his song. I just celebrated my 64th birthday and a prairies is still calling out his name.

Rich was a human, a humble guy, not driven by fame. His words were sincere, vulnerable, deep, honest, and highly-poetic. I cried when i heard he died, same as with Keith Green, a brother with a very similar spirit and giftedness. I’m still stunned listening to the quality and heart of Rich’s style, since he first broke onto the scene.

I saw him several times. The thing that struck me the most about his concerts was that he was so reluctant to be in the spotlight. He would let the members of his band play their own stuff and he would turn into just another backup musician. In an industry full of huge egos , it was beyond refreshing.

Thats been a very long time ago but...
every time i hear this song it brings new hope with the powerful words of the wild. And of all of the great songs that Rich produced, this song with the dulcimer and the profound words, puts me in a praise mode and i love hearing it over and over.
"How the Lord takes by its corners this old world
And shakes us forward and shakes us free
To run wild with the hope
To run wild with the hope
Your spirit of hope lives on with your beautiful music Rich Mullins,

Jason Villalobos, I am so glad you discovered Rich Mullins. Rich sings about the God that many people do not know or believe in. I would like to challenge you as someone once challenged me. One day when you are free just sit outside alone and look around at the beauty and splendor of creation. Look up to the sky and ask the God that Rich sings and talks about, ask Him if He is truly real and if He is everything like the way Rich describes Him, ask Him to reveal Himself to you and allow you to sense His presence in your life. I promise He will do that for you. He will make himself real to you, just simply because He loves you more than you could ever imagine. And I also promise if you come to know this Jesus who many people speak of, it will be the most glorious adventure in your life and throughout eternity.
What you will come to find will be the most amazing truth you will ever discover.
      1 Corinthians 2:9
9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. Jason all the best to you.

I appreciate that. You don't have to believe in God to see that his music and song writing were great. I think I know what Rich would say to an atheist. He wouldn't say much at all. He would probably just say it's ok because God believes in you and leave it at that. He was totally cool with hanging out with all kinds of folks. Most were just a bunch of ragamuffins. But somehow they created magic.

    Calling Out Your Name
Well the moon moved past Nebraska
And spilled laughter on them cold Dakota Hills
And angels danced on Jacob's stairs
Yeah they danced on Jacob's stairs
There is this silence in the Badlands
And over Kansas the whole universe was stilled
By the whisper of a prayer
    The whisper of a prayer
And the single hawk bursts into flight
And in the east the whole horizon is in flames
    Chorus:
I feel thunder in the sky
I see the sky about to rain
And I hear the prairies calling out Your name
I can feel the earth tremble
Beneath the rumbling of the buffalo hooves
And the fury in the pheasant's wings
    And there's fury in a pheasant's wings
It tells me the Lord is in His temple
And there is still a faith that can make the mountains move
And a love that can make the heavens ring
And I've seen love make heaven ring
    Where the sacred rivers meet
Beneath the shadow of the Keeper of the plains
    Repeat chorus
From the place where morning gathers
You can look sometimes forever 'til you see
    What time may never know
    What time may never know
How the Lord takes by its corners this old world
And shakes us forward and shakes us free
To run wild with the hope
To run wild with the hope
The hope that this thirst will not last long
That it will soon drown in the song not sung in vain
    Repeat Chorus
And I know this thirst will not last long
That it will soon drown in the song not sung in vain

I was blessed to meet him at his acoustic concert when he was going to quit touring and focus on Reservation work. I helped load the equipment afterwards and got to meet him briefly. He was a humble, yet very gifted man. A few years later I walked into a singles group at Central Christian and at the end talked to the leader. I said, I’m sorry, but you look a lot like Rich Mullins. He said, “I should, I’m his brother David. “ Rich, I hope you are enjoying worship with our Lord! And Dave, thanks for coming to Wichita to continue Rich’s ministry work. Love you guys.

    Hello brothers.
    Hello Brian,
    The Seasons Change
So do the colors of the heart
    Every day, every shade
These are the colors of the heart
Green to Gold some they fall and decay
    Swept around this autumn whirlwind
In your haste you feel the grey
November skies sometimes you'll find never end
Winter comes and grips the Corners of your heart
    You slip away
The snow then falls a silent blanket of icy tears
The frost begins to heave the beaten clay, breaks the the ground of all your fears...we slip away.
The seasons change as the colors of the heart, green to Gold, some they fall and decay.
Adam Quinn Keefe aka Adam Leo Knipe., Dayton Tennessee, 1993 as I recall. Joe Runyon church on the main strip. Also Lee college.

@AzureMonk It's this earnestness amidst failings that made his lyrics/performances so powerful. As Rich said in his Sometimes By Step video, art has everything to do with being human. For this reason I prefer his live performances. Less perfection, more perfecting :)

What sort of musical instrument is that??

    • @bobbywise2313
      @bobbywise2313 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hammered dulcimer. It was not a very popular instrument back then but is experiencing a revival now. It is an ancient instrument and a precursor to the piano.
Calling Out Your Name is my favorite Rich song and I love that intro. The music fits the words perfectly. Rich and his friend Beaker were both good song writers.

      @davidwaggoner5901 6 ปีที่แล้ว

He is playing a hammer dulcimer. Having spoken to several people who play that instrument, Mullins seemed to be unique: "He can actually sing while playing!!" His style was one similar to strumming a guitar or playing chords on a piano.

I am going to guess this was post 1995. Possibly 96 or 97. I can tell somewhat by his band. This is post Beaker and into the Ragamuffin time. Plus as many remember he cut his hair short in 94. He didn't keep it that way and by 96 it was long again.
While I can't say if this is 96 or 97 it certainly is not 94 or earlier. His death was in September of 97. So this could have been close.

Rich Mullins was not THAT special. He JUST DID AN ACCEPTABLE THING IN GODS SIGHT. We have plenty of evidence in everything we see in creation just to believe in God. But where does out faith lie and who's hands do we put our lives in. We got choices he just did a good thing. WHAT ABOUT YOU? WHAT ABOUT ME?. This is not my eternal address 🙃🥲
