    My piano teacher asked me to find a "stretch" piece. Something I want to learn to play that I can learn little by little and be really challenged by. I picked this. It will be a process, but I have been listening to Rich Mullins since 1991. It will be worth the work.

    His gift of music, in particular his piano in "Sing Your Praise to the Lord" is so incredible, it sounds as if HE is an orchestra all by himself. Just exquisite.

      I didn't know that Amy Grant, sang his music. I use to listen to her, years ago, in high school, and I had no ideal that she was singing his music.

      Rich should of been a star, and singer, himself, without Any Grant,singing his music, at all.

    Rich Mullins is a boss!! I knew he wrote his songs, but had no idea he could play and sing like that. Very few people can play that style and sing.

      Right! This is a fugue which means intense concentration is required even by professional pianists - I’m so surprised he’s doing both vocals and keys for it!

      @@smaragdinepearl5439 I just saw where he took it from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Fugue in C minor. So incredible! He was so talented, he has become such an inspiration to me as a pianist and music ed major!

  • @smaragdinepearl5439
    @smaragdinepearl5439 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    This is from Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier (Book 1) - prelude and fugue in C minor. It’s the fugue, which require a lot of concentration because of all the polyphony and duration (by professional pianists!). His adaptation is amazing and I can’t believe he is singing alongside it, and playing at that level of energy - so much stamina is required too. Such a talented man, bless him for using what God has given him to bless us and sing His praises!

    Altho' Rich started composing at age four, the intro. to "Sing Your Praise" is taken from Bach's Fugue No. 2 in C minor. The story supposedly goes that he had to play it for a college piano course, and he "just kept going".

    @tori2dles Amy Grant's producer got a copy of this LP, and after hearing "Praise to the Lord," he knew that would be a great song for her upcoming "Age to Age" album. He secured the rights to it, signed Rich to a songwriting contract, and the rest is history.

    A gift from God. But taken from this world so easily. The announcement of his death still feels like yesterday and I remember trying to rationalize in my then 13-year-old brain why he was gone. A real loss. Thanks for posting this.

    • @AyeWitness

      Yeah it is a huge loss to us left on earth. But rich insisted on setting out driving in the dark pouring rain when he didn’t have to. He was asked several times not to go but rather stay one more night and go fresh on the next morning when it was daylight and the rain wasn’t lashing down. He was very strong willed and wouldn’t listen to anyone but himself and God. So he died that night … about 20 minutes after he set off. That annoys me for some reason…. Because it feels as if he didn’t care about his own value. And look what we all lost as a result. We lost all the new songs he would’ve written and sang. I’ve never even met Rich and I blooming miss him!!!

    There's a kind of musicality that can't be reduced to technique or explained in words, and I think it is ultimately the only kind of musicality that counts. Little drops of it are in everything that deserves to be called music, but Rich was soaked in it.

  • @someperson7

    I've heard this song so many times and never connected it to Fugue No. 2 In C Minor

  • @gzusrock
    @gzusrock 13 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    @tori2dles I don't think he wrote it for a class of any sort. It was originally performed by the band Zion, which was the touring band for Zion Ministries. Rich was a member of this band after leaving Cincinnati Bible College in the very early 80s, and wrote most of the music for them during his time there. One of the band members at the time had a relative who ran a small recording studio, and they were able to cut an 8-song LP which had "Praise to the Lord" on it.

    Never heard anyone play piano or sing a real song to the Lord Jesus the way he did. And everyone says Rich death is such a loss. ____ well, Yeah it is a huge loss to us left on earth. But rich insisted on setting out driving in the dark pouring rain when he didn’t have to. He was asked several times by ppl that cared about him, not to go, but rather stay one more night and go fresh next morning when in daylight and the rain wasn’t lashing down. But Mullins was very strong willed and wouldn’t listen to anyone but himself, and sometimes God. So he died that night … about 20 minutes after he set off. In his car or truck. That annoys me for some reason…. Because it feels as if he didn’t care about his own value. And look what we all lost as a result. We lost all the new songs he would’ve written and sang, we lost a man of God that wasn’t a Pharisee!! That could relate to ordinary unsaved people and reach their hearts of stone because Gods Holy Spirit was at work in Rich, to reach the lost and hurting for Jesus The Christ. I’ve never even met Richard Mullins and I flipping miss him!!! Dang it Rich… for once couldn’t you have not been so head strong and determined to have it your own way. The woman at the house where he’s spent the last ten day, practically begged him to not go. Saying please, it’s late ⏰ it’s stormy ⛈ outside, can’t you just go in the morning….. - but no joy. And 💥 bam he’s gone, left us all here without his unique ways of reaching peoples hearts with his songs and his take on God. And nobody has ever come close to replacing Rich Mullins. Todays preachers are all blab and grab TV billionaires … Hillsong and Houston, devils paradise. Wolves in designer clothing. It’s sickening. I hate this world. I can’t wait to leave it. I spend my life practically alone. No one knows how I feel each day. I’ve nobody to share life with, None but Jesus through His Holy Spirit.

    Probably don't have this all right, but I seem to recall that he didn't get a very good grade on the composition (maybe even flunked it). So he took it to Amy Grant. She recorded it on what really was her first breakthrough album "Age to Age" (1982). SYPTTL was one of the two songs on the album that hit the top of the Billboard charts for Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) that year. Amy's album was the first Christian album to ever go platinum (1985).

    Like most people, I'm sure, the Amy Grant version was what I was most familiar with. While I loved her version, the intro was modified to have a more "pop" feel to it, which, frankly, was probably the right call. However, I absolutely love Mullin's version which is truer to Bach's Fugue.
