Costs in Thailand are TRULY DISTURBING

  • Costs of living in Thailand are TRULY DISTURBING in 2024. I take a bike tour of Jomtien Beach to show you what living costs are like on a Thai minimum wage of 400 baht a day. We do several cost comparisons between minimum wage in Thailand working at a 7/11 store vs minimum wage working in Australia in 2024 as well as cost comparisons against the US dollar and the Great British Pound.
    When I considered what a Thai person earns on minimum wage I realized how truly disturbing the realities of living costs are here for locals. The equivalent prices shocked and astounded me - imagine paying 44 pound for a scrambled egg breakfast on Jomtien beach, or filling up your car costing 5 full days worth of money at the local Pattaya gas station.
    How locals survive here is an amazing story.

    That sunscreen is imported (possibly from Australia) so it’s going to be the Australian wholesale plus 300% import tax, very unaffordable for imported goods for people on minimum wage..

    Great topic 💯👌(I have been wanting to do this myself). However, just like you said in the last 20 secs of the video, more importantly and more interesting is to analyze the daily life of Thai's (economy). We see a lot of Thai's eating at markets for 50 baht per meal, and also analyze that level of living to income etc.. (not the imported expensive goods)..
    Once again, great vid bro! 👏

    Interesting, but Thai's at minimum wage have their own economy, stores and products. They buy scooters on loan, eat 30baht breakfast and use Thai sunscreens, or just stay out of the sun. You are comparing a tourist economy, products and stores for tourists with holiday funds. I agree that it is a struggle at minimum wage. Now go up country and compare housing costs, food costs and how happy people are...

    Hi Sam locals don't buy things like us. Their breakfast is rice porridge at 30-40 baht and in the country its even less. Most Thais don't drive A big Fortuner its more like a motor cycle. Over the last 35 years I have watched my Thai family-my wife's family go from mainly motor scooters to some having cars but none of them has a Fortuner. Some have had good jobs but they really buy cars that are affordable and get really good fuel economy. Even in Australia what car did you drive and could you afford a Fortuner or Prado. But some in my wife's family have done really well and drive Mercs and BMWs but they get paid a lot more than minimum wage. The biggest difference that I see is the huge difference between the middle class and the people on minimum wage or even less that might have a market stand in a small village

Rice and ramen instant noodles (MaMa & WaiWai) are the main ingredients used to fill up on. Most 7/11 items are reserved for the middle and upper class.

    There is in fact a simple secret how some people manage... Mama (a Thai brand) instant soups. Many, many people live on that. The pricing on many things is quite weird here. Fruit, eggs, misc stuff is all pretty cheap at the Rompho market. The food at Rompho at night (it switches to a street vendor stall market at night), is very, very reasonable. Try to get local brands where possible, as the fancy foreign stuff (I'm addicted to Nivea cream lol) is stupidly expensive. Speaking of the soups, tom yum/tom kha is really cheap and if you order it without rice its quite good for weight loss.

    I love videos with topics like this. In my opinion, you have to do the maths when spending money. Is an expense worth so much to me that I have worked so many hours for it? It also makes it easier for me to understand the expenses that very rich people make.
    I don't think my salary is bad. But I often notice that, compared to many Thai people, I use an old mobile phone. Or that I don't have a car because it would be a high and unnecessary financial burden despite my salary. These are points where I always ask myself whether financial education is a big issue? Why do you have the latest iPhone or a petrol-guzzling car if you then think about how many hours you have to work just for it?

    There are alot of rich Thais living in Thailand as you probably know, and the government is not elected as it happens in the west, and thus not run by poor/middle income Thais who would be able to change things. Thus its not in their interest to have a reasonable minimum wage, for lots of reasons, including Thailand being a cheap place to holiday. So it is a very unequal society, and if it bothers you while in Thailand, you can find ways to help out those less fortunate than you. As a foreigner I would stay out of politics, not try and change things and instead just try and help those less fortunate than you.

    IMHO, the price of raw land which can only be owned by Thais, like a small 1/4 rai bare home lot going for $40k, are expensive. That small rai lot B or multiple rai is likely owned by a person making minimum wage. So they are money poor but land rich.

    Finally someone taking into consideration that in some other countries incomes are higher , you cant just come on holiday and say its a cheap place because money comes from the home country saved up to spend in Thailand.

    If the Thais got a higher wage than they do now it would push up the price of everything up there for holiday makers and not make it the cheap holiday that it is for everyone now. If it goes up, less people would holiday there and end up going to alternative cheaper countries so hopefully it won’t go up much for the sake of everyone that loves going there for the cheap holiday that it is.

If I try to leave 20% at a restaurant my girl freaks out, so we agreed on 10% + the coins... We could continue to raise the minimum wage like they keep doing in California where it’s $20 an hour and businesses are closing up, everyone is losing their jobs, and nobody can afford to buy groceries. The wage is dependent on what the market will bear. This is economics 101. Not hating on the video, just pointing some key facts out. How much is rent in Australia? How much is Uber? I know in LA California a 5 min to 10 min Uber ride is around $25-$30. Raise the minimum wage and everyone suffers cause the prices of everything goes up starting with groceries and food cause they have to pay the employees more

    • @portlandGTR
      @portlandGTR หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also, you’re often in the tourist area where everything costs WAY more money. If this is something that changes (the minimum wage) expect that you will no longer be able to have a great place like Thailand to visit cause it’ll be cheaper in Hawaii long term. Raising minimum wage has never been a good idea. In any society.

    $5.25 per gallon San Francisco Bay Area at Costco. I think thats why a lot of people drive Teslas here. I took a tour to Bangkok once, our tour guide was from a poor family. He said his family sent him to Buddhist temple as a kid to raise him bec they are a big family and cant afford to feed him. I found that impressive bec I went to school in Manila when kids under 10 years old sold cigarettes and mints hopping on and off buses and cars in traffic. When I was on tour in Bangkok, I had flown in from Manila. It felt and looked similar but the air was clean and incredibly found no garbage in any street and I said I hope Philippines could be like this. Min wage in Manila is about $10 US a day. For Philippines, a lot of families get support from family working overseas which is also why their foreign reserves is a lot better than most countries in the region. I'll settle in Philippines first bec I grew up there (navy brat) but I like Thailand and maybe thats next.

    I don't get your video. Name any country where someone is earning minimum wage can afford anything? Minimum wage is not meant for someone to live off but rather a transitionary wage as they get better jobs. Thai people on minimum wage wouldn't be buying a Fortuner let alone filling it up every week. If you want to make a proper video, do one on cost of living and you'll be shocked that that Australia cost of living is crazy given the bad fiscal management of the government (thus everything costing so much there despite being a "1st world country").

    • @keltonjohnson6197
      @keltonjohnson6197 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a pretty bold assertion that minimum wage globally is meant to be a “transitionary wage” and that people are going to have the mobility to find better paying jobs later as a given. This is a policy question and the answer varies depending on location.
