    I remember Zac doing Hairspray to prove he could sing because he was having to fight to be allowed to sing his own songs in Highs School Musical 2 and when he did this and it was obviously successful, they allowed it.

      @@Delaney.N I am aware. But he's said it before that he had to fight to sing in the second movie because at first they just wanted to keep his vocals as Drew Sealy. I'm not saying he didn't work hard, but he auditioned and worked hard on Hairspray to prove his voice was good enough for him to have a lead that didn't need dubbed over by another singer.

      I sang this as a high school senior as a soprano and I literally lost 5 lbs by the time we premiered because our director HAD to have choreography. Only one worse was probably when I had to understudy Christine for Phantom of the Opera (the song) when we did a medley show. The soprano who picked it was the ONLY ONE who could hit the E6 and I was the second-closest at a C6/B5. You can't breathe for either of those, but at least Christine's is only one sustained note and not a whole damn musical number.
      Edited for context that our choir director was literally delusional that we weren't HS kids but were on freaking Broadway so every solo/duet had understudies even though if someone couldn't perform we could just take them out of the show??? But the program says it's being performed so God forbid. I hated her with every fiber of my being.

    I agree with you about Tracy running from the police. In the stage musical, Tracy goes to jail with everyone and Link comes to help get her out. I'm not a fan of the filmmakers deciding to make her run, because it's out of character and makes her seem more selfish. Aside from that misstep, this is one of my favorite films of all time.

    As a fat woman, THANK YOU for saying that! I did performing arts at college but I was always cast as either the ‘mother character’ or a man. Very disheartening, it actually killed my love for theatre because I never got a role that I was excited about. I don’t do theatre anymore but I love to sing and I’m hoping that with modern musicals, we’ll get more fat characters (who’s story doesn’t revolve around being fat or hating themselves because of it!)

      I was SO mad in high school because my choir teacher cast a skinny girl who was frequently flat-toned, to boot, and put her in a fat suit to play Tracey. I was almost always in the ensemble or a non speaking role. I hated it.

    • @katielouwho888
      @katielouwho888 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      This! I played the sheriff in the crucible and background characters in every other production. I was a good enough singer to be part of auditioned choirs and a 9 woman group. I was never good enough for even a singing supporting role in the eyes of directors. I think me being fat really was the reason. Always the same skinny girls got the leads. It really made me doubt my ability. I can't believe I didn't see that if I wasn't a good singer or at theatre in general, why was I tasked multiple times to help others learn their lines and songs? Fatphobia sucks.

    • @katherynhoward3840
      @katherynhoward3840 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@katielouwho888 same with me, I got solos in choir. I just never got roles in theater. I would have liked to have played in Wicked, as either Elphaba or Glenda, but the same girl got one of those. I don't remember who got the other. She got Annie. I think we did Cinderella and she got the title role there.
      But in choir I was the (same) teacher's clincher, because I had an ear for music and usually learned both the soprano and the alto part, and if the altos were struggling for a line or a verse, I'd drop down to help them before returning to the soprano part. I generally stood in between the two sections so I'd blend either way.

      we don't want to put unhealthiness on a pedestal though, even though we want to encourage people to like whatever they look like. You can always make someone look bigger if needed. Thing is most younger characters dance and dance is more aesthetic with an athlete and dancers are generally athletic because they dance.

    • @katherynhoward3840
      @katherynhoward3840 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@MsJubjubbird okay, but that has nothing to do with a high school level play where there's already a fat kid available, and *also* where the character is written as being fat. That line, "Life's a 45 when you can't buy it" is a reference to smaller records they recorded singles on. They were called 45s because you had to play it at a different speed than albums, at 45 RPM. Occasionally, record companies might release a single only to radio stations, but it wasn't available in stores. So you might hear a song you like on the radio and be disappointed to find you can't find it anywhere (except maybe on the full length album).

    I think Tracy making the big jump to feeling hurt after link said it was too big for him was a result of her mom’s constant statements on her weight. And I always loved that her mom was there to see what the effects of what her constant talk of her and her daughters size did to Tracy. After that point she changes her behavior and becomes more overtly supportive of her daughter and becomes her main encouragement later on. It’s always felt so healing! 🥰

      @peterbnotparker ปีที่แล้ว +63

      She's also upset because earlier in the scene Link said "I think knowin' you's the start of a pretty big adventure.", so since he said that in reference to Tracy not long before Edna showed up, she assumed "I just think this adventure's... a little... too big for me.", was about her cause it's a lot of the same wording.

You typically don’t get to pick your solo song, but that year my solo choreographer asked me if I had any song requests. Me being a theater kid and a huge fan of hairspray, I requested to do you can’t stop the beat! I just remember her not understanding what it meant when she said “tomorrow is a brand new day where you don’t know white from black”. Me being like 8 or 9 years old, I had to explain to a full grown woman that the song/musical takes place in the 60s during segregation and that the whole plot of the musical is about ending segregation!

    For Edna's obsession with weight, I agree every word is wrong, but I empathize that it is coming entirely from her own trauma. It makes me so happy to see her find healing throughout the story, but also to see that she found true love long ago. Wilbur loves her so purely it is beautiful.
    I had my own growing up moment watching Buffy. Yeah I wasn't the biggest fan of the Hairspray with Ariana Grande. She tans so much (her natural skin tone is very pale and people have argued that she's blackfishing, although she seems to have moved onto Asia-fishing recently) that having her play Penny makes no sense. You have all these moments between Penny and Seaweed talking about them being an interracial couple and yet she doesn't look white because of how much she tanned back then. When I watched it I legit thought she wasn't white so I was confused, so I looked it up and saw what her natural skin tone is.

    • @biasampaio5899
      @biasampaio5899 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Marzi29I see your point, but I’m a black person and I never thought Ariana was doing anything wrong, she’s half Italian which means she can get quite tan and lighting can also make a person look darker, so there are many pictures of her where she looks darker but the light was just awful and made it seem that way when in reality she wasn’t that dark. It never bothered me in any way. And I haven’t heard anything about her trying to look Asian or anything like that so I can’t comment. But the problems I had with Hairspray Live were minor, I didn’t like that they cut You Can’t Stop The Beat short, it was half the original size of the song, but they did the full song on a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade which also annoyed me cause it should’ve been on the show and not on a parade. And they also didn’t do The New Girl In Town in favor of doing Cooties which I thought was a weird choice. But I loved everyone’s acting and their voices were amazing, albeit they had some technical issues with the lighting.

    I’ve never seen this. I’ve only seen the live version and it’s so good. It also has my favorite song “Mama, I’m a big girl now” and it helps connect Amber with the others to show that they are going through similar things. I don’t know why they took it out of this movie.
    Pretty sure John and Zach are in that as well

      The soundtrack for the movie does have Mama I’m A Big Girl Now but the three girls are instead voiced by Ricki Lake (Tracy in the original John Waters movie), Marissa Jaret Winokur (the original Broadway Tracy) and Nikki Blonsky(this movies Tracy)

      I’ve watched videos about the making of Hairspray and they wanted to put the song in, but it would have meant splitting the screen into three segments and just would have been very awkward.

      If my memory is correct, they had it playing during the credits. It was one of my favorite songs
