This movie is just too iconic to exist. Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah, and John Travolta and just gave the star power this movie deserved (and Christopher Walken). Plus everyone else in the cast gave such good performances
Im a black girl in my school we performed hairspray (it took a whole year to finally perform and I hated it all) and all the white cast who played the nicest kids had to scream "negro day' and there were only a handful of black kids doing the show and we all cringed everytime. Everyone just said it with so much enthusiasm and excitement,I know it was part of the performance but no one was showing any side of discomfort even my teacher shouted it everytime but hey... it is what ot is.
I remember in spanish class all the white kids being uncomfortable to say the word "negro" because they thought ut was pronounced the typical american way..and thought it was the same word. It also baffles me that the term colored is considered rude yet people of color isnt..to me they are the same its still separating us from white people based on the color our skin is supposed to be(because there are non white minorites that are just as pale as white people or paler) adding "people of" in front of it doesnt really soften the blow.
Okay same! We finally had enough black kids to do it and it turned out great but there was a lot of discomfort that we had to get through because the high school had a rough streak of racism. Also, it was always the white kids who were begging to do the show every year knowing damn well that it’s not a simple thing to do. Like, the disconnect was astronomical. I played one of the Dynamites and had a blast, but it took a lot for us to get through the rehearsal process and the show.
That really sucks although I’m sure at least someone was cringing on the inside😕I’m glad it’s uncomfortable when we’re reading reallyyy racist shit out loud in my English class( because who cares if famous writers say it it’s ✨literature✨) also no one actually says anything either, it’s just an awkward pause and then continuing on
Thing is thats because its a film based in 1960's and thats what it was like back then. Atleast there showing how much the blacks was mistreated back then insted of sugarcoating it.

There's a joke near the beginning where this one girl has to leave the Corny Collins show, and they ask her how long she'll be gone, and she's like, "about 9 months." Girl, I had so many crushes that were grown older men when I was younger. Nothing wrong with having a crush on an older celeb. As long as it's just a crush. lol No illegal shit.
As a Baltimore boy whose parents worked on the original film and still know John Waters well this movie perfectly honored the original and the musical. Up to including John himself as the Flasher AND Jerry Stiller the original Wilbur as Mr. Pinky
I should probably preface this with saying I’m black? Idk. Anyway, that Corny Collins line always randomly pops up in my head. Obviously it’s crazy, but the directness of it and it being sang is hilarious to me. Smh. Like, “sir we have our WHAT day??”.
I should also preface this by saying I'm black and have never seen this movie but was shook when I heard it j now like what?? But, I'm not mad at itttt

Honestly this is one of the best movies I've ever seen. All absolute perfection. Everything is so perfectly portrayed and I feel it all works together so well. I rewatch this movie whenever possible because it's just a work of art 🤩
When I was in high school two kids were doing it in the bathroom and someone recorded some of it on vine. That video spread like wild fire and by lunchtime everyone knew. The couple were sitting in the cafeteria, everyone started staring and the principal called them to the office. The two of theme were suspended and the guy who recorded the act was arrested for child pornography. Those restrooms were closed for the rest of the year.
For me, it was Queen, Michelle, John, and James. For the kids, it was absolutely Elijah Kelley. I gasped and cried watching him onscreen. I felt like I was watching Sammy Davis Jr for the first time.
I love them all I think they all carried the movie but since John played a housewife in 2007 literally embodied being a woman for this role during a time which men would only dress up as woman in movies as a comedic plot so he definitely deserves the praise. Queen Latifah and Michelle are just always amazing to watch and they thoroughly played their characters and brought originality to the roles as well. James as corny was like superb. I can go on and on but gosh, what a great movie it is *P.S. John Travolta definitely wasn't paid enough for his performance in this movie.* I remember my mom having a problem with the fact that he was in drag but I never cared 😂
Did you watch the movie? She did fall for him because he was black. It was rebellious for her as an innocent white girl with a racist mom, to date the handsome black man who had rythm and was cool. She literally says in "without love" that she's tasted chocolate that she's never going back. If that's not fetishism I don't know what is.
Aliyah J. True, but Penny was always down with the shits, which is more than these other snowbunnies can say.

@Liza Johnson You know good and well this is the 1960s. He was damn woke at the time. You know what they meant.

@ oh no we love Hairspray. I just do not remember the racial commentary. My childhood memory is very unreliable.
I think as kids we do not remember or catch on to negative stuff and we should bring that ish into adulthood.
@@temiarvw1360 Hell no, I'm not trying to be surrounded by wolves in sheep's clothing in adulthood lol.
@@mynameisnonofyourconcern8685 my English classes didn't care 😭 I had a white teacher give a whole class about why "everyone should be allowed to say the n word 🥺" and all the racist kids were excited af to read those parts
