The 80s version featured Ricki Lake as Tracey...she made a cameo as the agent at the end of the movie (she was the one that the camera did a close up of), and the woman who played Queen Latifah mother was the original Motor Mouth from the 80s film. The flasher in the beginning of the movie was John Waters who wrote Hairspray and other films such as Crybaby with Johnny Deep
Nicki Blonski won the roll, she had worked for Starbucks and won the open casting call. This is a remake of John Waters, original film. You might like the original more. Ricki Lake stars as Tracy, Divine plays her Mum. Ricki makes appearance in this film as the dancing agent, in the audience. This was a great remake and I don't say that often. 😊
Marsden plays this role so well too, his determination to take charge at the end and make the show what it always should have been is awesome. And Kelley can freaking dance and sing.
I loved on Glee when Alex Newell sang the Queen Latiffa song “I know we’re I’ve been”. It’s so emotional and touching on a different aspect of life but still has the same message. Such a powerful song
I watched hairspray for the first time earlier this year; i knew of You Can't Stop the Beat, but going in, I had no idea what the story was. My only recollection was that Travolta was the mom who hadn't left the house in many years. So, needless to say, I was shocked by the story being heavily focused on racism. Anyways, when it got to I Know Where I've Been, I had a feeling it was familiar, but I couldnt place it. It wasn't until near the end with her long note and when the chorus comes in that it clicked. It was on Glee with Unique, Beiste, and the trans people. That was a great performance.
Lmao “what accent is John trovalta doin” guys he’s probably one of the best ACTORS in this movie. He’s using a Baltimore accent “I left my aarn (iron) on” 31:52
Fun Fact: the role of Edna Turblad (Tracy's mother) IS actually traditionally played by a man in stage performances because the origin of the story is the John Water's film (John Waters makes a cameo as the flasher) Hairspray where Edna was played by the legendary drag queen Divine
I have to say the scene @20:36 between Corny, Velma, and the station executive(?) is one of the most visually beautiful scenes. The colors, the lighting, the way James Marsden’s eyes pop in that gorgeous purple suit, I’d like to talk about. Purple suits can, I feel, look really cheap; this suit is impeccable. It may be my favorite costume in the film which is saying something cause I love a gorgeous dress and there are so many.
The last sing "Can't Stop the Beat" is known as one if the most difficult performance's in musicals. It's known as one if those numbers where you struggle to breathe throughout due to the fast pace in lyrics and the fast paced dance moves that also go on for quite a long time throughout the final act of the show.
So, the original Hairspray was a John Waters film in the 80's that became a bit of a cult classic. Then, in the early 2000's they created a Broadway musical adaption that got really popular and won a bunch of awards, and so they made THIS movie version of the stage musical in 2007. ABC also did one of their "filmed live for tv" versions in like 2015? 2016? Ariana Grande played Penny (Amanda Bynes's character) and was actually able to sing it the way its written, without all the cuts this version did. Lol. (Just a little bit of shade to Amanda Bynes. Still love her though.)
Fun fact the guy who plays the flasher at the beginning, is John Waters who created Hairspray. And Jerry Stiller played Wilbur in the original. ALSO the talent scout lady was Ricki Lake, the original Tracy.
The guy from the clothing store played Traceys dad in the 80s version of this film, and the flasher was the director. Ricki Lake played Tracey in the original too.
Through a bit of quick research I just discovered that lil Inez's actress is a prolific songwriter. She cowrote BTS's Mic Drop, Ariana Grande's songs 7 Rings and Thank U Next, and Panic! At The Disco's High Hopes. So to be clear, this awesome singer n dancer who starred in a major musical with A list actors as a teen, cowrote some of the biggest songs of the late 2010's. She also has a full music career of her own. Apparently she does a lot of covers according to this wikipedia article. She also has a whole as company called TaylaMade Inc, which includes Parx Studios (which worked with billie eilish and lil Nas X), Trailer Parx (lifestyle brand), Parx Publishing, 3020 Management, and TaylaMade Records. Her name is Tayla Parx incase u wanna look into her or anything. Can't believe I didn't look into her before.
I was obsessed with the original Hairspray as a kid. I used to watch it all the time. When this one came out, I was like, no thanks. When I got older, I finally gave it a chance and I really enjoyed it. I doesn't overtake the original for me because the cast was ICONIC!! I definitely think y'all should check it out. RIP Twitch too. Somehow I didn't realize he was in this movie and I was devastated by his passing.
fun fact: one of the higher ups at the studio that made the film wanted them to cut “where i’ve been” because traditionally the protagonist (tracy) sings the “11 o’clock” or the big show stopping number in act 2 but the director fought to keep it in and he says the thing he’s most proud of in this film is keeping that song in. also, julia roberts is the reason james mardsen was cast and john travolta suggested michelle pfeiffer to the directors who then offered her the role.
What a pleasant surprise to see this video pop up subscriptions! I saw the 80s movie at a girls birthday party when I was like 12... then when this version came out I had just graduated high school and I believe felt I was to cool to watch it but ended up LOVING it! Anyone else get chills when her parents get to see her debut on the show? The ending number also gives me chills every time I watch!
tWitch was a finalist on the competition show "So You Think You Can Dance". I don't recall if he won his season, but he was definately a fan favorite, and was called back to partner other competing dancers in later season. He also danced with Michelle Obama when she introduced her national fitness campaign. tWitch was a DJ on Ellen DeGeneris' talk show (he later became an executive producer), and was also a judge in the last couple of seasons of "So You Think You Can Dance". Everyone was shocked when he was found dead in a hotel room in December of 2022, the victim of an apparent suicide.
one of my favorite bits in the movie "be ready for a whole lot of ugly coming from a never ending parade of stupid" "so you've met my mom!" cracks me up every time
I love that you are watching hairspray, this holds a special place in my heart. My mom and I watched this for like 3 to 5 years straight every Christmas.
Fun fact: One of the agents in the audience in the end is played by Ricki Lake, who played Tracy in the original 1980s movie, and who also had her own talk show in the 90s.
That was Twitch! I haven’t seen this movie in so long that I didn’t realize he was in here. I can’t believe he’s been gone for a year now. His death was really shocking to me.
When my high school did this show we had a man in Travolta’s role and also in Queen Latifah’s - he got a standing ovation for “I know where I’ve been” every night, absolutely killed it
This musical is actually a remake of the original John Waters film “Hairspray” which was not originally a musical. That movie starred Ricki Lake; Jerry Stiller was in that movie as well. Also, a fun Easter egg in this movie is that John Waters himself made a cameo in this musical as the “Flasher who lives next door” in that first song “Good Morning Baltimore”.
Fun fact, the guy that flashed them on the street during "Good Morning Baltimore" was John Waters, the director of the original Hairspray from 1988 which that version isn't a musical but music is still heavily a part of it and love version even more than this one.
The original 80's movie wasn't a musical, then it was made into a Broadway musical, then the musical was made into this movie. That has happened with a lot of movies, for example Little Shop of Horrors and the upcoming Mean Girls musical movie
The flasher in the intro is John Waters. He put together the 1988 Hairspray movie. Don't watch the original with expectations of being the same. Same plot beats, but very different vibe. John Waters is known for his cult classics. They're known for being off beat and even offensive at times. He is known for always pushing the envelope to put it mildly. So for him to cameo as a flasher in a fairly family-friendly movie is very appropriate
My nieces who were 4 and 6 years old at the time absolutely loved this musical. I heard this thing every single day for an entire year, great songs even in the end credits.
I watched this from start to end with a silly, happy grin on my face. Loved your reaction to one of my most favourite movies. You guys' friendship is adorable!
Keep watching musicals! This was so fun and brought back so many good memories. Queen Latifah is really good in Chicago as well. Also Dreamgirls is a holiday favorite. I didn't even realize he was in this movie, but rest in peace Twitch.
loved everything about this!! please do more musical reactions! 34:00 “omg it’s a grease crossover” actually yeah grease 1 (travolta) vs grease 2 (pfieffer) and we all know which one wins
4:37 Exactly! I was a manager at Family Video not long after this movie came out and I played it every single shift. It was impossible to not be in a great mood when this movie was playing. On especially trying days I played it twice. lol
I'd never expect to see a musical on this channel but I'm here for it. 🤣 As a hardcore musical fan, I must say that movie musicals since have never come to close to this greatness. 😊 But a lot of been inspired by this film.
You should really watch Chicago next! It has queen latifah singing, and also it's got that sort of framing device you mentioned where all the musical numbers are framed by one character's perception of events! Roxie is so obsessed with showbusiness that it's her way of percieving the world.
"Efron uses White Save!" might be the best joke I have ever heard from a reviewer for this movie 🤣 I adore this movie, but yeah, it's definitely a lot of that. They had a few cameos from both the original play and the original movie- Jerry Stiller originally played the dad. Ricki Lake (one of the agents) was Tracy in the original movie, the original stage Velma walks out of Mr. Pinkies shop, John Waters (the writer of the movie) is the flasher, and 2 of the choreographers have small parts. Oh, and the director/choreographer played one of the agents as well. There is also a song on the soundtrack that plays over the credits that is sung by 3 Tracys- Ricki Lake, Marissa Jaret Winokur (orinigal broadway tracy) and of course Nikki Blonski from this movie. This was one of the first movies I ever saw that had a fat character that didn't hate herself and her size wasn't just an easy joke- there was always a purpose and a way for her to push back. The fat characters get to be multilayered and interesting and not just the easily forgotten sidekick.
John Travolta was doing a baltimore accent. I'm not sure why he was the only one who did it but it's honestly not awful. I'm not sure if the line 'I left my iron on' is in the original play or if they threw it in there because iron is so specific in the baltimore accent. it's like 'coffee' for new york or 'park my car' for boston
Not sure if anyone mentioned it…but fun cameo in Good Morning Baltimore. The flasher guy in the trench coat is John Waters. The director/writer of the original Hairspray from the 80s with Ricki Lake.
Honestly still one of my favorite movies. I saw it in theaters (already knew about the original movie but had never seen the musical). And I fell in love with it. It kickstarted my love for vintage 50s and 60s clothing too. Had a huge crush on Zac Efron after this too. I annoyed my whole family by playing and singing along to this soundtrack CD after I was supposed to have been in bed. This movie is pure nostalgia for me and honestly it never gets old for me.
Watching this months later, but this and the musical is based on John Waters’ 1988 Hairspray movie (non-musical). Adam Shankman, the director and choreographer, was also on So You Think You Can Dance! And I keep forgetting he directed The Wedding Planner and A Walk to Remember.
This is one of the best movie musicals. There are days when I love this show with my soul and days when the focus on Tracy being the leader for fixing racism and John Travolta in a fat suit irritate me sooo much.
I absolutely LOVE so many songs in this musical, and one of my favourite parts is "When I need a lift Time brings a gift, Another day with you..." ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I like the message in this movie; everyone is equal and is respected. In Grease, it's less interresting. Sandy had to change so Danny can accept her; he changes a little at the end but as soon as he sees her, he removed his white jacket. I think it means that he doesn't need to make efforts in their relation, only Sandy has. That's awful! He also forced her to kiss him after he gave her a ring and didn't appologise... if he did, that wasn't sincere. That's how i saw his reaction. He's a jerk, she deserved better than him 🙂
I love this musical so much, it's one of my comfort cast recordings and soundtracks! You lot really didn't have any clue what it was about was actually the best thing 😂 *edit* To answer your question about Edna yes she has always been played in drag! ❤ the original film had the legendary drag queen Divine play her, then Harvey Fierstein originated her on Broadway (Michael Ball originated after on the West End) and like you see John Travolta played her in the film version of the musical ❤
Hairspray is one of my all time favorites, both the original and the Musical. You must watch the 80s Original version then rewatch his one and look for the Easter eggs. Like the flasher in the opening song, that's John Waters, creator and director of the original Hairspray. In the final dance scene, one of the scouts is Ricki Lake, who played the original Tracy. The role of Edna Turnblad was originally written for Devine. John Waters saw no one else as Edna. So yes, typically, it is played by a man in drag. All of John Waters Films are his love story to Baltimore. I hope I get to see a reaction of the original soon!! 🙏🏻 ❤
When I was in High School, I signed up to be in our schools musical and my first year doing it, it was Hairspray. It was really so much fun and an amazing experience.
I am a musical fan but also a big John Waters fan and Hairspray is based on the original film (not a musical) by John Waters. The role of Tracy's mother was played by Divine, a famous drag queen and one of the main stars in John Waters films so to honor the OG the stage version and the adaptations get a man in drag to play Tracy's mother. John Waters' films are all based in Baltimore and Hairspray in particular was about a Baltimore area show that was very popular when he was a kid. They're like hometown celebrities.
Another poll around the office to do would be to see whose seen the original John Water's (He was in this as the "Flasher who Lives Next Door") Hairspray. That'd be a fun one to compare and contrast.
One of the guys who helped set up the suit John Travolta wore in the movie actually came to my high school for a career day thing we were doing, told us about how Travolta was a little anxious to wear the suit.
im pretty sure that the lead actress was cast during some sort of casting call? like this is literally her first movie. "She auditioned for the role as a high-school student with no professional acting or singing background at the time, and beat out eleven-hundred candidates" - wiki
I love this musical alot and fun fact about me I performed this musical during Middle school and it was a lot of fun, the choreograph was a ton of fun to learn and the songs were so catchy, I wished I had a lead but I was one of the Corney Collins kid dancers and Mr. Pinky. I dont really remember the dances anymore but it was blast.

Fun fact, Christopher Walken was mentored by Gene Kelly, so he's trained as an old school song and dance man
One of my fave films. Great cast. We need more James Marsden & Elijah Kelly in movie musicals tbh.
He’s using a Baltimore accent “I left my aarn (iron) on” 31:52
my favorite line in this is when Penny's mom tells Tracy "DON'T YOU TOUCH MY CANNED TUNA!"
I say it all the time.
she’s way too good at playing shitty moms, she makes them so funny even tho they’re horrible 😭
@@starheartskull15at least in The Help she kind-of redeemed herself
Hence why it's also known as "You Can't Stop to Breathe" 😋
@@Charharr 😂😂
So, the original Hairspray was a John Waters film in the 80's that became a bit of a cult classic. Then, in the early 2000's they created a Broadway musical adaption that got really popular and won a bunch of awards, and so they made THIS movie version of the stage musical in 2007. ABC also did one of their "filmed live for tv" versions in like 2015? 2016? Ariana Grande played Penny (Amanda Bynes's character) and was actually able to sing it the way its written, without all the cuts this version did. Lol. (Just a little bit of shade to Amanda Bynes. Still love her though.)
i just gotta butt in, Hairspray Live is NBC not ABC
It was in 2016. Then Shaiman and Whittman of this musical and others did MARY POPPINS RETURNS for 2018.
Let's not forget John Waters himself was "the flasher who lives next door" in this movie too.
The most outrageous thing said in this video is when Aaron said, I had no idea Queen Latifah could sing like this😳😳 where are you been bro?
This reaction is hilarious. I could not stop laughing at you two. I need a musical reaction series from both of you ASAP!
Fun fact the guy who plays the flasher at the beginning, is John Waters who created Hairspray. And Jerry Stiller played Wilbur in the original. ALSO the talent scout lady was Ricki Lake, the original Tracy.
Genuinely we need to see Elijah Kelley in more stuff. Dude was charming, great dancer, great singer
The guy from the clothing store played Traceys dad in the 80s version of this film, and the flasher was the director. Ricki Lake played Tracey in the original too.
So happy that Greg and Aaron are reacting to this movie! This movie has a great soundtrack! 👍
To answer Greg’s question, yes, John Travolta is doing a very “over-the-top” Baltimore accent. But honestly it’s not even that far off 😂
Through a bit of quick research I just discovered that lil Inez's actress is a prolific songwriter.
"I had no idea Queen Latifa could sing like this" Watch Chicago!!! She's amazing there.
I was actually looking for this comment before I made it. 🤣
I was shocked to hear Aaron say he didn't know Queen Latifah sang like that when I feel like I've always known her to be an amazing singer!
The original 80's movie wasn't a musical, then it was made into a Broadway musical, then the musical was made into this movie. That has happened with a lot of movies, for example Little Shop of Horrors and the upcoming Mean Girls musical movie
I honestly think one of my favourite lines is when Brenda says 'Just 9 months' 😃😃
This is one of the best musical films in history, and it's so underrated
You two paired together, has quickly become one of my favorites. From the TMNT series, to Hairspray, it's been a hilarious time.
So for him to cameo as a flasher in a fairly family-friendly movie is very appropriate
i knew i knew him from somewhere....
I'm delighted how much fun you two had with this movie, and in the exact tones it intended.😂
Keep watching musicals! This was so fun and brought back so many good memories. Queen Latifah is really good in Chicago as well. Also Dreamgirls is a holiday favorite. I didn't even realize he was in this movie, but rest in peace Twitch.
Fun fact: the actor who plays tracy it was her 1st movie & now she ACTUALLY works in a hair salon
This is one of the most enjoyable musicals I’ve ever watched, always a favorite. Definitely exhausted the soundtrack for weeks after my first watch. 😄
loved everything about this!! please do more musical reactions!
On especially trying days I played it twice. lol
The way I spit out my drink and shed a tear at 18:23 "It's like laundry"...
You genuinely should do the 80s version of Hairspray. TBH I'd want you guys to go down the whole John Waters rabbit hole.
I actually couldn't click on this video faster this is one of my favorite musicals
As a girl from Baltimore this is my comfort movie for sure!!! Hope you like!
yay another baltimorean! Love when our city is in movies and such!!
Honestly love how much you guys didn't have any idea what the movie was about but somehow had the best combination for it.
I'd never expect to see a musical on this channel but I'm here for it. 🤣
As a hardcore musical fan, I must say that movie musicals since have never come to close to this greatness.
He's probably the only one who knows how to do it lol. You have to study it and be around actual residents for it to sound correct but not cringey.
I absolutely LOVE so many songs in this musical, and one of my favourite parts is
"When I need a lift
Time brings a gift,
Another day with you..."
❤❤❤❤❤❤
This was so fun! Would love to see you react to Chicago. More Queen Latifah musical goodness!
This movie is my baby - I know all the songs by heart. Greg better not piss me off 😂
I like the message in this movie; everyone is equal and is respected.
You lot really didn't have any clue what it was about was actually the best thing 😂
*edit*
To answer your question about Edna yes she has always been played in drag! ❤ the original film had the legendary drag queen Divine play her, then Harvey Fierstein originated her on Broadway (Michael Ball originated after on the West End) and like you see John Travolta played her in the film version of the musical ❤
I had this on Dvd as a kid and it is def my most rewatched movie ever. I still have so much fun when i rewatch it, im glad y'all went into it blind!
Definitely one of my favorite movie musical adaptations! I could probably quote this movie word for word bc I've seen it so many times
It's so fun to see reactors I actually watch react to this film. Love this film so much
Hairspray is one my favorite musicals of all time. It’s perfectly campy and I love it
THE SOUNDTRACK IS ALWAYS SO GOOD 🙌🏽🙌🏽
When I was in High School, I signed up to be in our schools musical and my first year doing it, it was Hairspray. It was really so much fun and an amazing experience.
33:58 I just realized it's Michelle Pfeiffer and Christopher Walken together in this scene, Catwoman and Max Shreck. And that trick gun is very funny.
BTW, Jerry Stiller, "George's dad" and Ben's actual one, was the original Wilbur in the first "Hairspray" movie.
“You not marching with us?” “What if they fire me from Scream 7?” 🤣
I love this musical so much- the music is so catchy and just makes me feel so happy and upbeat!
