Dude....Ryan's voice hits the ear so right. Seriously one of the most talented, beautiful voices I've ever heard in my life. Why isn't this man in literally everything!? Broadway, step up your game!!
what ryan said about teachers who are failed artist and make their students feel like crap is so true! i am a cellist and I had teachers as well who were just like that and it was terrible. Having a teacher who wants to teach and who cares about you is so important
Im glad Ryan talks about vocal health here. I had a voice teacher push me to be louder and beltier than I, as a beginner, could be. It harmed my voice and I had to go to speech therapy and still have tension issues due to it. Sometimes we think that people like Ryan are just naturally amazing at singing when a lot of work, training, and technique go into it that needs to be learned as well. Only when I found a voice teacher that understood this, was I able to really see improvement and find MY sound. All very good advice!
When I was about 13, I went to a two week summer camp for Broadway singing, and the man running it kept trying to make me BELT the high G in Kindergarten Boyfriend. I literally was not physically capable- I was literally like 13 and not even a soprano yet, let alone a belter in any capacity (nor did he bother trying to teach me proper belting technique and how to do it healthily, he simply demanded it of me)- and I'm glad I didn't push myself too hard and cause some real damage for myself. He wasn't a bad dude, just terribly irresponsible. People need to realize that health NEEDS to be the priority in any form of vocal coaching, or really just any activity where singing is involved.
“HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT?!?” Because Hannah is using ✨Hannah magic✨ I’m so glad you reacted to her reacting to you! Can’t wait to see your future collab 🥰
My favorite thing about straight tone and vibrato at the very end is that it pulls me in because I want to hear the singer give me the vibrato. It’s like there’s a treat in front of a dog, but the dog has to wait to get it
as a music education major, i agree with everything Ryan says about certain voice teachers. I'm so glad I have a voice teacher now who really does her best to tailor her teachings to my voice. not trying to make me into something I'm not.
So is the person who was the actual one laughing famous now? 🤣 Clearly a missed money opportunity to be a Barrett laugh impersonator! 🤑💰 … there’s a market for everything these days isn’t there? 🤣
I LOVE my voice teacher, Elena Shaddow. I live in Oregon and we have Zoom lessons with her in NJ. She is fixing things I have struggled with forever. Im disabled, scoliosis, damaged vegus nerve... Its a lot. Shes gotten me to sing clear notes that i have never sang before. Science says I shouldnt be able to sing at all, I feel so good about me and my voice now.
I feel like with vibrato you have to know how to control it because sometimes when you use it too much you can tend to go flat or sharp but with you Ryan since you are a professional I think you’re doing it perfect
You are right, but there's more to it. Depending on style - actually, in most styles - there certainly can be too much vibrato even if it is perfectly done. Sure, it sounds great, and powerful high notes also sounds great, but there are reasons, why we don't put powerful high notes in every possible place in a song. Vibrato is like a highlighter - and if you highlight everything, what's the point? Also, too much technical exercises in a song might sometime draw attention away from emotional delivery and other nuances. Also, Hannah suggested going straight tone into vibrato, which is an opportunity for additional dynamics and emotional nuances. Anyway, he sounds great, i just thought, that Hanna's suggestions make a lot of sense.
I enjoyed this video so much. I’m a sucker for all things vocal pedagogy and it was awesome to not only hear Hannah analyze the performance, but the fact that Ryan was right on the same page with her. I also must say how refreshing it was to listen to Ryan talking about the apparatus, placement, tension, resonators, and vowel formants. This was all just so much my bread and butter! Loved it!
I don't know Sam or the fact that Ryan was dating someone but gosh the way they look at each other is just goals.... They're so fond of each other and their work too...plus they get goofy together... I mean if that isn't a perfect relationship I don't know what else is.
So as a voice teacher myself I will say that we are trained to kind of hear where our students voices are. We are trained to hear the passages and range just by the tone and timbre of a person’s voice. I don’t know if it’s just because I’ve analyzed so many voices in my experience but I can tell just by the thickness of the note when a person is about to change into their next passage. Idk it’s weird but definitely a needed skill 😂
I remember my mom saying when she was in musical in Holland they strongly dictated where there should be vibrato and when absolutely not! And when she heard the England cast it was so different! This was many years ago.
I find these kinds of videos and conversions about how a professional actor and singer takes care of themselves very interesting. The PT room, seeing physical therapists and speech pathologist, workout routine, eating healthy, etc. I love the "peak behind the curtain" at different walks of life.
I had a voice teacher because I’ve always loved singing so I wanted to get more into it and all she wanted to train me on was musical theater when I am more of a contemporary singer and it really discouraged me because I just couldn’t get the musical theater tone, but watching Hannah makes me want to get back into it!
I have the exact opposite problem. I had a solo in choir one time and every time I sang it my teachers were like “More Vibrato!!” And I was like “Impossible”. 1, bc it would have sounded bad 2, that’s just what my voice did. Its not like I was singing it that straight. 3, I was sick the day of the performance and could barely even talk. Like certain pitches, my voice just full wouldn’t make. So I was already doin my damn best. And somehow managed to figure out the correct change of pitches to sing the solo. And just the solo. I mouthed the rest of that concert.

@@lifeislikereallyhard yea but that's still incredibly hard to be that pure and accurate without prep. Also I've never seen a production with him in it unfortunately 😅
...so basically what I'm hearing is that Ryan needs to release an album of musical theater songs where he gets to sing them however the hell he wants. I'll be first in line to buy that album!!
One time in my highschool choir my teacher had a voice coach she knew come in to help with festival pieces- I have a hard time with creating power in my middle range so it usually kind of drowns in comparison to my lower and upper range(which I already knew)- BUT this coach told me there was a "problem" with my voice that needed fixing and it didn't necessarily hurt my feelings but it felt so wrong of her to say it like that when there was absolutely zero trust built up. She kind of freaked me out about vocal coaches and my singing didn't improve as much as it could have over high school because what she said made me feel insecure
I completely understand where Ryan is coming from when he talks about his voice being tired after eight hours of working it every day. I did it every day last year during school because I was in two choirs and a select ensemble, then I would go to musical practice from 3:45 to 9:00 at night and on Wednesdays I would go to church choir practice which would be from 5:00 to 8:00 and there were also choir conferences I would go to such as SICC and All State and an all girls choir one, each one taking about three days to a week where I would work for 8 hours and then go to my hotel room and work on music for school and for church. You have to really train your voice for that sort of thing or else it can really damage it and I love that Ryan goes over that and how he helped his own voice with the help of his vocal coach and confirming that what Hannah is saying is very much true.
Oh. My. God. RYAN ME TOO!!! I have a strong natural vibrato, and have SO much trouble reeling it back. Like, I REALLY need to work at it, but get that note ALL the time. So happy to know that even professionals get that note (makes me feel less alone)
i was recording a demo for my brother’s musical and he told me to not do vibrato on a certain word/vowel and i’m sitting there like “it’s vibrato or out of tune, my guy. you choose” 😂😂 but i do understand why it’s matters for some songs stylistically. i also understand the struggle of trying to restrain a natural vibrato as well 😂
