    I have a Judy DH all red with cantilever brake arch.
    Elastomers are dust.
    Curious if you know what level of travel this is?
    What years are still compatible with swapping.

    • @ButterSuspension
      @ButterSuspension  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      DH has 80mm of travel. 1995 had the bolt on arch and bolt on crown; 1997 swapped to one piece crown/steerer/upper legs and one piece lowers and those years should be swappable. You can get coil spring kits from Specialty Retro Products or new elastomers from Suspensionforkparts.net

    So I have a question, so I have a Trek 6500 and I feel a need to replace the forks, it's over twenty two years old, I think it's time, any suggestions? I need a travel of 63mm and the spacing between the drops for the wheels is 100mm and of course I'd need a v brake config, the only thing that seems to meet the parameters is a Suntour for around $130, I'd prefer a higher caliber name brand although if you'd vouchsafe the Suntour I'd go with that, any suggestions? :)

    • @ButterSuspension
      @ButterSuspension  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'd looked for a nice used fork. Rockshox, Marzocchi and Fox all made awesome forks back then, and there's still some good used forks out there. Just know that EVERY used fork from that vintage will need a rebuild. EVERY single one. I just rebuilt a 2000 Marzocchi air fork that was brand new, never ridden, it still needed a rebuild because time just breaks stuff down.

    • @ButterSuspension

      Most likely not, if it was the stock fork. Newer models had open bath damping and coil springs. Heavier, but more reliable.

    First of all, Judy XC was the first one out, I think SL came out the next year. Second, Speed Springs were made by Mountain Springs, and they were amazing. Installed them on my SL around 1999, really gave it new life, quite an improvement over the original elastomers.

      Have you had any luck with replacing the lower bushings in the fsx fork? Now that's the real question. The busings are the most important part of the rebuild, the damage on the stanctions is so common and sad.

    I'm rebuilding my judy DH from '97. your damper-service-video already did help me a lot! thanks for that. now I'm struggling with the springs I bought (SRP, the yellow ones). it seems they're to large (just some mm). So when I want to screw in the top caps, I give not less preload (what can't be good for the caps). The fork travel I messured is round about 80 mm, the SRP springs should fit, but they don't do so. Any idea in which direction I should look to find my mistake?
    thanks for your help!

    • @ButterSuspension
      @ButterSuspension  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesn't hurt the caps to preload the springs like that, a few mm isn't really much load compared to sitting on the bike or riding hard.
      Also, the springs would definitely be taller than any old elastomers since those shrink over time.

    Hands down one of the best vids on Judy Modifications. No music or bad edits, just FACTS, COMPARISONS, OPTIONS & a calm personality.
    I just bought a '97 Stumpy-Comp w/ JudyXC and this was great @giving me the info I needed to get started. Found that it has a duel-RED spring kit in it. Also must have come with the default or set to the smallest travel because it doesn't have nearly enough. So I think I will try and find out how to increase the travel.

    • @ButterSuspension

    Great video! I've always wondered about modularity with forks. Would it be possible to do a custom build with parts from different manufacturers? As long as the stanchion width is the same for both uppers and lowers, and your damper rod is the appropriate length, could that be done in theory?

    • @ButterSuspension
      @ButterSuspension  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In theory, yes. But most companies live in a development bubble so they just make what they want and it's almost always incompatible. Thread pitch, inner leg diameters, distance between leg centers...

  • @Andy-co6pn
    @Andy-co6pn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another "feature" of elastomers was by increasing the preload you increased the overall spring rate .
    Rode my coil/elastomer stack (one in each leg) Dh's from 96 until they failed in 2015, the dropout broke off dumping me into the loam 🤕
