A note about Boston surviving the great war mostly intact: a type of nuclear bomb is the neutron bomb, which is characterized by having a relatively low explosive yield while producing a massive (but short lived) amount of radiation, meaning this leaves most of the structures intact, while killing everyone and everything. The Cambridge crater could have been the ground zero of such bomb.

A neutron bomb could have been what created the Glowing Sea, most likely, but it's confirmed in game that the rest of the city was targeted by the missiles from the Yangzee submarine. Those would have also been low yield, but they were even smaller warheads, so the destruction would have been even less. Most of the bombs deployed in the Great War were low yield explosives, meant to cause as many casualties as possible.

an honorable mention might be New York. It's not directly named as being such, but a member of the Brotherhood in Fallout 4 mentions flying over "hundreds of miles of uninhabitable ruins" (paraphrasing) between the Capitol and Commonwealth areas, which geographically would take it over or very near New York.

NYC has got to have been one of those cities. Fallout universe nukes are such that, even assuming a direct strike in manhattan, the entire skyline wouldn't be evaporated. I wanna climb those skyscrapers. Also, if you're a fan of nyc & the apocalypse, the manhattan level in wolfenstein the new colossus is hauntingly well done.

In regards to Pittsburg basically up until the 70's the steel working job economy was huge. It wasn't until around then places like Pittsburgh and Detroit had their industrial centers outsourced to China. With consideration to the Red Scare that's heavily documented in the Fallout timeline, this outsourcing probably would have NEVER happened thus leaving Pittsburgh's steel industry relatively intact and thus a target for nuclear destruction.
That's my hypothesis based on what we know 😊

I’m from around Pittsburgh and you’ve made a great point. All the more, there was still a lot of heavy industry, especially along the river for a long time, it was huge in the 50’s too, the average joe could do quite well with a mill job. The deindustrialization of the area has taken decades and caused massive population movement out of the area, as well as a drain of wealth, and while the city recovered economically but most towns around it didn’t. The collapse of the industrial heartland was huge, so I’d imagine in the Fallout universe the country wouldn’t allow their industrial capacity to be outsourced, that’d be a strategic vulnerability in a world where the major trade blocs are continuously preparing to destroy each other not globalize and the economic shifts that brings. It’s likely they kept a lot of the same economic policies of the 50’s especially as this was key to the 50’s vibe which really arose from a strong economy revolving around a middle class majority.

For the suburban homes and one- to two-story buildings, it would be pretty easy to rebuild those structures if you have the materials, and considering that suburban homes or other buildings were meant to be built in a short amount of time, it would not be too hard.
For things such as skyscrapers (which I’m guessing there would be a fair amount, especially in the center of LA), that would be an entire challenge altogether. The machines necessary to rebuild the skyscrapers would be a fairly large number, and if we were just to rely on scaffolding alone rather than other machines (cranes, possibly robots, etc.), it would still come as an engineering problem getting all of that scaffolding built and making sure it doesn’t just fall over. And considering engineering in general, while the skill/career still does exist, it has noticeably took a dive unless you are in a faction like the NCR or the Followers of the Apocalypse, basically any faction that still has pre-war databases and textbooks.
And considering that this is the post-apocalypse, many of the regular materials that pre-war society used on a regular basis, such as steel or glass, would be hard to get, either because the techniques that are used to make the materials is rudimentary or inefficient without the machines, meaning that the machines must be produced first to speed up the process, adding to the consumption of materials and fuel (both of which are not common anymore), or just simply that many of the materials would have to be imported from other pre-war states, adding to the challenge of getting materials due to a low amount of working vehicles, like big rigs.

I remember a mention of a bunch of Mormons who were in a vault having to build from the ground up when they returned to the surface, as the city was flattened. It was so damaged that New Canaan was essentially built on top of it.
It kinda makes you wonder why Salt Lake City was hit so hard of all the major important places in the US. When I think of important cities in the US, SLC doesn’t even make top 10. The Mormon holy land being the number one target for nuclear warheads is hilarious, but pretty strange.

Also - the only time atomic bombs were dropped in real life were on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Not Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, or Kyoto. There were of course reasons why this was, but it would be easy to come up with reasons of why certain smaller cities were destroyed over larger ones in Fallout.

What also confuses me is that only 13 major/noticeable nukes have hit the city, while 9 hit area around Las Vegas. And these numbers can’t be messed up, because it comes from the same developer. Maybe the warheads launched at SLC were simply meant to cause more ground and shockwave impact over radiation? Because the military objects in the city would expected to have bunkers and be prepared for nuclear attack in many other ways?

Ok, so someone may have mentioned this already, or you may bring it up later, but one of the potential reasons (My headcannon, I know loads of Fallout lore, but I am not infallible and may be missing some info that disprove's this) for Boston recieving less warheads than expected may do with the Chinese ability to bomb the East Coast being limited. Essentially, only their Submarine Fleet is capable of bringing warheads close enough without being destroyed. We know that the east coast sustained the first known strikes, and that a fleet of bombers was detected over the Bering Strait, so my assumption it that the Bombers were to deal with Alaska and western Canada and a sub fleet was sent to deal with the east coast while another dealt with the Gulf of Mexico, the remaining subs scattered around the west coast, which is likely within range of China's ICBM's that would do the main destruction. This explains why a city like Las Vegas, which ultimately isn't a strategically important city to the U.S. received over 70 warheads whearas Boston was only hit with 2, because China had the ability to bombard the west coast in excess, but in the east they only had a limited amount of bombs to send, most of which are likely headed to more strategically advantageous places such as military bases and industrial centers or the Capital. This can also give creedence to the fact that the East coast in general sustained less desertification and environmental damage, from the combination of distance from already desert regions in the U.S. and the general disproportionate number of warheads that hit there. (Edit, mixed up east and west)

The only nuke that hit there (canonically) was by the player in order to stop the scourgebeast queen, which also didn't have a big range considered other nukes (like the one in the glowing sea). And the most bombs on the east coast were most likely aimed at Washington DC anyways

I don't know if this contributes to the topic but am I the only person that finds it odd that San Bernardino or any other city in the Inland Empire doesn't appear or isn't at least mentioned in Fallout? From what I can tell on Fallout 1's map fallout.fandom.com/wiki/New_California the area where the IE should be looks barren and devoid of life as if it never existed. I get San Bernardino or any where in the IE probably didn't appear due to a multitude of factors like the Writers not writing them into the plot, though it is kind of intriguing that there isn't anything left of the IE on the map.
Addendum:Uppon further examination of Fallout 1's map, there appears to be like something that kind of looks like some sort of settlement (though due to the beigeyness they could have just be some rock formation) Southwest of Necropolis and Northeast of The Hub. It kind of aligns to where SB would be in real life. So maybe a remnant of San Bernardino did survive the war.

Sorry im late but there are 2 ground zeros located in fallout 76, they are both explorable and surprisingly very close to each other. Unfortunately they are nothing like the ones we see in fallout 4 so don't expect much from them i guess. The location of both ground zeros are near the monorail elevator a little far behind Watoga city.
Apparently there is a bigger nuke that detonated just off the map of fallout 76 but thats as far as I know in terms of actual ground zeros in fallout 76.

In the real world the hardest places hit would be places in the mid west and north central untied states. Air Force bases like Minot North Dakota. Basically any missile base in the great plains would get annihilated first before major metropolitan cities as a way to cripple the US’s 2nd strike response.

    • @RafProductions3

What about the north eastern USA?

    • @ozythewise7411
      @ozythewise7411 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@RafProductions3 what about it? If you only have let’s say 100 nukes to drop on America what would be the best way to cause as much damage as possible and protect yourself. There is no defense against a nuclear war. The best hope you have is to strike first and cripple the countries capabilities to retaliate. In the real world this isn’t possible thanks to nuclear subs that carry enough armament to wipe out the planet. So even if the USA got deleted without launching a single missile military sub commanders have authority to act as they see fit. Each Ohio class sub carries enough nuclear warheads to level any country. In the fallout universe I don’t think this 2nd strike capability existed. So the Chinese or whoever struck first would most definitely am to cripple the USAs ability to launch back. Maybe this is why there are so many in launched nukes in games. Lonesome road and the bunker in fallout 3 come to mind that haven’t been launched yet. Maybe the Chinese first strike worked and was able to knock out some key locations of US launch sites. There isn’t much tactical advantage with attacking cities outside of devastation and death. Out of the areas the North east probably got hit harder as prime targets are DC, Philly, Baltimore, New York and Boston are there. Not to many military bases besides Dover AFB in south Delaware. Most bases in the north east aren’t worth attacking.

The damage seen in game is sadly NOT a good factor to tell damage. It's been 200 years and it COULD be rebuilt even from the scraps left after the blast. While I understand using that as a metric written lore is far better a source since again stuff can be rebuilt and New Vegas (the game not city) is a perfect show of that. Same goes for the folks that say "plants can't be there" It doesn't take over 200 years for vegetation to regrow, if anything seeing no plants in most areas is NOT accurate. I like how you used your own version of the actual scale used for this though. >:3 Denver has more info also in the tactics game, as for the whole overpasses being in tact...that honestly looks like part of a cutscene. The 2nd concept looks like leftovers. Saying Denver wasn't hurt more seems silly knowing there's more info on it and well Vault Zero is nearish the area and that vault did not survive.

I really want a Detroit or modern Chicago Fallout game honestly, like imagine if they finally add drivable vehicles in a Detroit game since it's the Motor City?
