    I can't imagine a way to make this entertaining. It's like watching paint dry. It is however, educational. Thanks if you watched all the way through. Rich

    Great content! Watching paint dry but a window into the things to come. Eventually, you should be able to connect the saw to you phone and have a service tech look at it remotely. Lots of options with this technology.

    Richard, thank you for this video! I inherited the MDG system, when our Stihl trained guy quit. He went on to a job he was in college for. (Jet engine repair, as I heard it.)
    So, I have been a month trying to learn how to use the m-tronic stuff. Your presentation was great. Thank you, I appreciate it. Friday I hooked up everything and made my first saw using the MDG to re-set the saw. Thank you.

      That's Awesome! There's a 2.0 version out now. I haven't had luck getting logged in yet. Need some help from tech support. It's supposed to have some more features.

    i am over in uk , i am thinking in buying this tool , as i just rebuilt a ms500i , i couldn't see any spark when pulling recoil , so needed it plugged in to test ignition module , but no one in my area has the stihl tool to do this , so maybe a little sideline venture for me ,
    great video demo of running through process ,

    Wow that’s awsome. I just added the stihl Bluetooth smart connect added to all my stihl equipment. Have you used this product yet? Thanks for video very informative. Nice to see how far these saws have come with technology. Now we have data to see how long saws are lasting what are some major issues that need addressed and how many hours we are getting before we need to bring it in for updates. A lot of information we now have with this equipment

    Best info I've seen, on M-tronic - Thank You!
    What I am trying to determine: is an M-tronic ms261, as reliable as a carbureted ms261?
    I'd rather have the long-term reliability, and ability to fix problems myself. Thank you!

    • @richardflagg3084
      @richardflagg3084  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I feel the MTronic saws run better than a properly tuned traditional carbureted saw. Both the Auto Tune and MTronic components are pretty robust. I would suggest running 40:1 mix regardless of MTronic or standard saw for longevity. It's fine for the top end but the bearings in the bottom end need the added film strength of that little extra oil.

    • @nanomaine
      @nanomaine 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richardflagg3084 Thank you for the advice, on the M-tronic.
      I'll assume, the 40:1 mix (Stihl oil) won't cause exhaust plugging? I had an old Homelite PS33, that plugged its exhaust - with older type mix oil. My little MS250, has stayed clean on the Stihl oil at 50:1. Plus, my other Stihl tools use the same 50:1.

    • @richardflagg3084
      @richardflagg3084  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nanomaine I'm not a huge fan of the Stihl Ultra. It has a very high flash point. The original Stihl orange bottle will give better results. All 2 stroke oil has to burn. A high quality oil that has a lower flash point will carbon up less.

    Hey rich I have a 201tc-m and when you start it for the first time and let it warm up for atleast 30-45 secs it falls on its face when I give it throttle. But straightens out after 4-5 mins. I replaced spark plug air filter fuel filter and cleaned tank. I removed the spark arrester awhile ago and always use canned gas.Did the mtronic reset and still does it. Do u have any suggestions? Possibly looking for a lil port work and muffler mod. Are you taking customers?

    • @richardflagg3084
      @richardflagg3084  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does it have a hesitation when you throttle up? Especially if you let it idle for a little bit in between cuts? If so it's time for a new carb. Swapping out the solenoid or putting a kit in the carb won't make a difference, in my experience.

    • @williamfrancisco9077
      @williamfrancisco9077 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richardflagg3084 nope the only hesitation it has is within the first couple cuts of a cold start. It doesn’t even do it if I run it then shut it off for 20 mins and start it back up

    • @richardflagg3084
      @richardflagg3084  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you doing a lot of light pruning? Go stick it in some wood you can make some full bar length cuts. Allow it to cut under a steady load, and when you come out of the cut, let it idle for 10 seconds. It helps the MTronic system learn.

    • @williamfrancisco9077
      @williamfrancisco9077 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richardflagg3084 I do use it to limb, but also to chunk down a tree until the wood is bigger then the bar and then I’ll switch to a bigger saw. Next time I’ll let it idle for 10 secs after I cut. Thanks for the help.

    is it worth it to timing advance these saws or just leave them alone?

    • @richardflagg3084
      @richardflagg3084  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see a small improvement in throttle response with a mild timing advance. As far as a real increase in performance/ power I think a healthy muffler mod helps more IMHO.

    • @richardflagg3084
      @richardflagg3084  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davidgoldsmith939 The Older MDG1's had a CD to get started. Inside the kit there is a card with a serial number and a link to download the software on to your computer. After that, It updates as necessary when you log in. It's a one time spend. No recurring costs to "stay current"

  • @st7650
    @st7650 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Where can I purchase this software. I own a Stihl ms661R C-M and a Stihl ms261 C-M. Looking at other Stihl saws with the M-tonics. I called my local dealer he said I think you need to be a Stihl tech to get one. They was looking it up and doesn’t show available to customers. So I’m not sure if it’s just not in stock or it’s not available unless you work as a contractor for Stihl

    • @richardflagg3084
      @richardflagg3084  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was "allowed" to purchase this will a little help. I'm not sure going forward how long I will be able to use it, and the software. The 2.0 version software that is just out requires a dealer log in, unlike the current version I have. It has been supported and updated along the way as I have used it. I have a feeling the platform I have will eventually not be supported and rendered useless. Just speculation for now, but highly possible.
