    You should watch the France v Wales game it was in the 2021 six nations if I'm correct. The game was amazing and as an Irish fan being neutral it was one of my favourite games

    Hi Blake. Re the BP above the scores during the game. It simply indicates that the team, if scores stay the same until the end, will receive a Bonus Point. Because these tournaments have, generally, small numbers of teams competing (6 for Six Nations, 4 for Southern hemisphere) the tournament rules also encourage teams to play hard to the end.
    Often there is a bonus point for WINNING by either 3 or 4 tries, or sometimes simply SCORING 3 or 4 tries. Plus, for the losing team, if they only lose by 7 points or less, they can also earn a bonus point. It encourages teams not to give up and get as close as they can.
    This bonus point situation can influence what the teams decide to do, particularly in the last 10 minutes of a game, to either gain a bonus or stop the other team getting a bonus point. When two or three team are about of equal ability in a tournament, it is often the bonus points that sort out the overall winner of the tournament. Cheers. You are doing a great job re learning about Rugby.

      Hi John, just a quick note that the scores don’t need to stay the same, once the 4 tries are scored the bonus point is guaranteed, and although the bonus point is still relatively new they had gone back and studied the tournaments back many years and only on one occasion would it have changed the championship, so doesn’t look like it made much off a difference to eventual winners. However it does make it more exciting to watch 😀

    The Six Nations is actually quite competitive with different winners almost every year. Only Italy are really whipping boys but they are slowly improving. Scotland are looking at their best currently since they last won in 1999 but are probably still not quite good enough over 5 games to win the Six Nations.

    6 Nations = Yearly Northern Hemisphere International rugby competition between England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Italy and France. Rugby Championship = Yearly Southern Hemisphere International rugby competition between New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and Argentina.

    bp means bonus point. With most rugby competitions in the world you get 4 points for a win but if you score 4 plus tries you get 5 if you lose and score 4 tries you get one point

    Six Nations is basically the European Championship that's on every year. Its a superb tournament because no one team dominates. Usually 3 or 4 teams out of 6 are all competing for the championship. Italy are always a poor team but the other 5 can usually all beat each other. In the past 20 years Wales has 6 championships. Ireland has 4 and France and England have 5. Its always extremely tight and often the championship has had to go to tiebreakers like which team got more tries over the duration of the championship.

    In the Six Nations and other competitions you pick up 4 points for a win, if you scored four tries or more you gain a bonus point to give you a total of 5. The losing side can also earn a bonus point by scoring 4 tries and/or finishing within 7 points of the winners. These points can make all the difference in the final tournament/league table.

    6 nations is a rugby tournament between England, France, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Italy. Usually, it is pretty competitive. A team is awarded 4 points if they win a game, and 0 points if you lose a game. However, a losing side can earn a bonus point for losing by 7 points or less. Both sides can earn another bonus point by scoring 4 tries. This encourages the teams to compete right till the end.

    The Six Nations has been going on in some form since 1883 beginning as the Home Championship (Eng, Ire, Sco, Wal) with France joining in 1910 and Italy joining in 2000. No team has dominates it indefinitely (which is a huge part of the appeal). England and Wales both have 39 titles in that time, France 25, Scotland and Ireland 22, Italy 0.
    Beyond that a Grand Slam is the ultimate achievement (winning all games in a single championship). England have 13, Wales 12, France 9, Scotland 3, Ireland 3 and Italy 0.
    Since it became the Six Nations, the title and Grand Slams have been shared around a lot: England 7 (2 GS), Wales 6 (4 GS), France 5 (3 GS), Ireland 4 (2 GS).

    The England v. Scotland game is played for the Calcutta Cup. There was a view of it right at the beginning of the video as the players came out onto the pitch. It is one of the oldest sporting trophy's in the world! It was created after the Calcutta, in India, Football Club (this was Victorian times so when they say football it would mean rugby) disbanded. The club took the money left over from the bank in Indian Silver rupees (type of Indian currency) and had it melted down into a cup. That was the cup shown. it was presented to the RFU (Rugby Football Union) in the hope that it be used as the rugby equivalent of football's FA Cup.
    The RFU would not accept this as it would go against the ethos of the game which was amateurism. You could not play for anything in which you were rewarded. This one of the reasons why American Football succeeded over Rugby in America in the early 1900's. American Football would pay wages to players which attracted better athletes while rugby players stayed amateurs! The RFU did decide to allow the cup to be used for a game between England v. Scotland with the winner holding onto the Cup until next year. Thus from 1879 the Cup has been played for by the two teams.
    Also the President of the Scottish RFU is the Princess Anne and she ensures that she comes to this game every year to watch. She doesn't have to be introduced to the players as she would have met them from the very first time they started playing for Scotland! This has come at a bit of a cost as her daughter, Zara Philips, married the English rugby player Mike Tindall. When England beat the Scots she would have to present her son-in-law the Calcutta Cup as a member of the English team!

    Approximately 250,000 pints of beer will have been drunk at that game! Afterwards everybody will come out of 'Twicker' and go into Twickenham and try to get into the Cabbage Patch! It's a local pub, practically the first pub as you get into the town coming from the stadium. The atmosphere in the town is heavin' on match days.

    Rugby competitions are decided by bonus points.
    Up top on the Score Line when you asked the question there is 3T above England's score. That means that England has scored 3 Tries.
    Bonus points are given for, winning the game (2points), tying the game (1point), losing by less than a try (1point), and win or lose, scoring 4 tries.
    Only if teams are tied using this method does head to head score line come into play.
    The BP means that a team has scored 4 tries and so get a bonus point.
    Comebacks are more prevalent in rugby because, when you score, the other team kicks the ball back to you.
    This also makes it easier to extend a lead.

    • @chinomcneillo
      @chinomcneillo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not trying to be rude but there is quite a lot wrong here at least in Six Nations terms. Bonus points make a huge difference in domestic competitions but it has been proven that this would only have changed the winner once since the inception of 6N so is not the case.
      Points are awarded as below
      Win - 4 points
      Draw - 2 points
      Bonus points
      Loss by 7 or less points - 1 point
      Scoring 4 tries - 1 point
      There are no further points awarded
      Head to head results will almost never possibly come into account in a decision of a place in the championship as points difference (from the entire tournament) is the first tiebreaker and the probability of this being the same as another team with the same points is almost nil
      Also the reason the other team kicks off is that in the 15s game this gives the kicking team the advantage not the receiving team. This is why it is reversed in rugby 7s, I don’t believe you can put a comeback down to this at all, I also wouldn’t agree that comebacks are any more prevalent in rugby than any other sport

    a little information about the actual nations involved.Although they are 6 nations there is actually only 4 sovereign countries involved UK,France,italy and ireland(republic). Of that only france and italy teams represent the sovereign nation state and only the sovereign nation state,whereas the irish rugby team represents both the sovereign nation state of the republic of ireland and Northern ireland which is in the UK.Obviously scotland wales and england are in the UK.Its sounds dry but it all adds an interesting dynamic to the competition. For example when ireland play in dublin the irish national anthem is sung along with a neutral song irelands call for the northern players .

    Internationally there are probably 7 or 8 teams that could realistically win a world cup, (England, Wales, France, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa & Argentina) however for all but 2 of those teams it really does vary each tournament. The only two that are always going to be strong are New Zealand & South Africa. Those two are historically very close to each other in terms of strength and dominance, but due to some wacky policies by the South African government in the past 20 years New Zealand has put some distance between the two (NZ have a huge winning % vs everybody, usually at least 70%, but it was 47% vs South Africa until recently (last 15 years or so) when the SA govt went real hard on race quotas and not picking the best players that were actually available).

    • @Trajan2401
      @Trajan2401 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      SA record back in the days is flawed because no country could send coloured players to SA then so they never played the best but even so NZ had a far better overall record against all countries than SA did.As for the quota system who's fault is that?,exactly and to me it's just another excuse because SA best players tend to be the coloured players like Kolisi,Habana and Kolbe in fact all SA tries in the RWC final 2019 were setup and scored by the coloured players

    Who wins the 6 Nations trophy: mostly England, but Ireland are always competitive, and both Wales and France are only slightly behind.
    Scotland mostly loose, and Italy never ever win a game

    • @stuartbrittain7835
      @stuartbrittain7835 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not mostly England! England have won it 7 times, Wales 6, France 5 and Ireland 4.
      So England have won 32% of the 22 championships so far. And Italy have won 11 games.

    • @mjwoodroff8446

      If you actually go back through to the Home Nations championship of 1883 (the origin tournament) England and Wales both have 39 championships apiece, France 25 (from 1910), Scotland and Ireland 22, Italy 0 (since 2000).
      However, the ultimate achievement is a Grand Slam (win all of the games). For this we have England 13 (2), Wales 12 (4), France 9 (3), Ireland 3 (2), Scotland 3 (0) and Italy 0 (0). With the bracketed numbers being those won since the introduction of Italy.
