    I was lucky enough to be at this match (as a Scot living in England, it was a very good day). The highlight of the last try doesn’t do it justice-the move was started inside Scotland’s 22 and was only 3-4 phases long. Where van der Merwe’s first try was individual brilliance, his second was as a result of outstanding teamwork and individual skill from others (like Richie Gray’s catch and pass to Matt Fagerson).

    It is not club rugby where you can just switch teams. He chose Scotland after he became eligibile to play for them. He cannot reverse his decision. (technically he can if he returned to south africa and did not play for scotland for 3 years but I don't see either scenario happening). It is a shame. Him and Kolbe on each wing would have been the two perfect opposites to have.

      He doesent have to return to SA he is allowed to play in other countries but yes he would have to quit the Scottish team for 5 years (the rules changed fairly recently from 3 to 5)

    What makes it so much more satisfying as a Scot to beat England is they are a much larger country with about 10x the population, giving them a much larger player pool to choose from. There is a tremendous rivalry between the countries and generally over time the larger county wins more often. That is why it is so satisfying to beat your larger neighbour, particularly at their home stadium and for the third game in a row. The same goes for England v Wales and England v Ireland, where England has a much greater population.

      Yep, I think Hoggie was returning from an injury, so it was understandable that he was not his usual self. I also felt that Finn didn't have his best game either. There were three or four times when he carried the ball too far before releasing the pass, but that can also be attributed to good line speed from the English first-up defenders.

    South African here. There are two main reasons for Van Der merwe not playing for us. First reason is that we already have 4 wings who are all just as good if not better than him (Mapimpi, Moody, Ardense and Kolbe) so there was never really space for him (his brother used to play for us funnily enough however he hasn't for a while and I'm not sure why). Secondly he can never play for us now (technically false he can play for us but he'd have to effectively quit international rugby for 5 years and no real player would ever do that) because the rules say once you chose a national team you cannot reverse the decision thus he can never come back to play for us and he must stay with the Scottish team.
    Incredibly talented player and honestly he is living testament as to why we are the greatest rugby nation. We produce so many good players that they have to go play for other national teams because the competition is so tight (there are many other players ,at least 5-6 that immediately come to mind who play for other country's because they just couldn't quite make it into our national team, who play in European teams who are all South African)

    • @AlwaysAC
      @AlwaysAC ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Main reason is that he had consistent injury problems and no SA team wanted to risk taking him on. Came to Edinburgh and failed another medical but they decided they’d look after him and sponsor his recovery.
      And now here we are.

    I felt all the way through that although we had more possession we looked very vulnerable when Scotland had the ball in our half; every time there was a real danger of them scoring. Kevin Sinfield has got some real work to do with the defence.
    I also think we need to stop trying to play two fly halves; I would still start with Smith but I feel Farrell has little to offer at centre; let's pick proper centres.
    Some of our guys looked like they struggled for stamina at the end as well, especially Itoje.

    • @colindouglas7769
      @colindouglas7769 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with England in my mind was the number of times your scrum-half booted the ball up-field with aimless box kicks and an interminable period of aerial ping-pong ensued. There didn't seem much reason or point to it: no wonder your forwards were peching away with their hands on their knees after chasing forward only to have to rinse and repeat the process after the ball had been booted back into your own 22 again by Hoggie or Russell! You're right though about the task facing Mr Sinfield. That England defence couldn't tackle a fish supper, let alone the likes of big Duhan! It must have been embarrassing to watch for the England fans in the stands. You had so much pace in your back three, but you didn't give them the ball often enough! Instead of spinning the ball wide to stretch our defence, you insisted of hitting the ball up in the forwards. Steve Tandy has worked wonders with Scotland's defence in recent years and our defence coped well with your attacks and Toonie's natural guile and flair is evident in our attacking play. We have a lot of good ball carriers in the pack and we have very dangerous runners in the backs as you found out to your discomfort on Saturday.

  • @colindouglas7769
    @colindouglas7769 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Sean! Dude, you were perfectly logical at the top of this video in picking England to win the game before the kick-off! As someone who has been following Scotland's national rugby team since the 1970s, this game was a very pleasant watch. Trips to Twickenham rarely go this well for us. The fixture has been played at Twickenham on 52 occasions since 1911; England winning 39, Scotland 6 and there have been 6 draws. Two world wars meant that the Championship was cancelled between the years 1914-1920 and 1940-1947, so you can see from those statistics, Twickenham is a real fortress for England.
    The transition of the game of rugby union from its amateur roots to full professionalism in the mid-1990s hit Scotland very hard because we have a considerably small pool of players to choose from compared to our rivals. Rugby union is not considered a major sport in Scotland; football (you guys call it soccer in America) is the national sport in Scotland. In rugby union, there are only two professional clubs, Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh, and the Scottish Rugby Union take their players from those two clubs and those from clubs outside Scotland who qualify for Scotland either because they have Scottish family connections or through being resident in Scotland for a period of, I think, 3 years, but it may have been increased to 5 years. The South African contingent (Duhan van der Merwe, Kyle Steyn, Pierre Schoeman and Willem Nel) in the Scotland team qualify through the residency qualification. South Africa can go whistle if they want them back, but so rich are the playing resources available to them, Die Bokke don't need them, and we're very happy to have them in our team, thankyou very much! And Duhan has chosen to play his international rugby for Scotland, as have all the other players in the team who were born outside Scotland.
    While we seem to have the most competitive team we've had for many years and we have three tests at home in this year's 6 Nations (against Wales, Italy and Ireland), but we Scots know only too well that the Scotland team are only as good as their next result. They have trouble with stringing consecutive wins together, and there have been many false dawns after we've gone and done what we did last Saturday and won our first test match of the series. Invariably we fail to follow it up in the second test match. Wales will be no pushovers on Saturday and they'll be hurting after losing against Ireland. So I'm not going to count my chickens quite yet!

    • @rocketrabble6737
      @rocketrabble6737 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my early days of watching the Five Nations, when I started playing as well, I could generally console with the thought that we (England) would expect to beat Scotland and Ireland and so finish mid-table. It was a long time before we would go in expecting to beat Wales and France, but things seem to have swung back in the immediate now. I am even 'nervous' about Italy this weekend at present. I hope Scotland succeed against Wales and Italy but I don't see you taking Ireland or France, but who can say, if you play out of your skins and they fall flat on the day? The Scottish faithful have had some thin pickings for a few seasons, but they have a good side at present.

  • @IanSmith-ue2nk
    @IanSmith-ue2nk ปีที่แล้ว

    Alcohol saps strength. A single unit can negate the benefits of 2 days training and ruin field performance. Gregor and every other sensible rugby coach knows this and sometimes needs to rein in their more emotional players. Games are won first by good ball possession by the team's pack horses, and only then by Race Horses like Finn and Duhan who finish the job. Dedicated, skilled and sober players committed to modern strength and conditioning training helped Scotland beat England and more recently Wales. National Pride contributed little to help our team win - remember Aly MacLeod's Tartan Army that failed miserably in their endeavor to win the 1978 World Soccer Cup. Pride comes before a Fall. Top international team's like Ireland and South Africa understand this and avoid taking an apparently innocent 'wee dram'. Good luck in France Scotland - we appreciate your sacrifices.

      Well in the Scotland squad there are even more English born players, but we don’t talk about that so in my eyes, as the SA players chose to work and play in Scotland, the boks can’t accept them as their own when they ignored them in the first place

    It would be nice if Duhan stayed in SA, but we have enough good wingers already. He wouldn't be able to play for SA anyway, he already represented another country, so he would have to quit international rugby for 5 years in order to qualify for SA.

    Kyle Steyn was playing! He was no. 14. Who Duhan was talking to was Chris Harris. Chris plays in midfield (number 12 or 13) Duhan plays on the wing, number 11. Please at least do some research to make your vlog more accurate, I'm sure you'll benefit.

    We really love duhan vd Merwe but with Kolbe, mapimpi, kurt-lee, moodie and multiple utility backs like Willemse, kriel and gellant there's very little opportunity for a new player to breakthrough at wing.
    Btw, scotland had 4 SA players playing, duhan(wing), kyle steyn(wing), wp nel(prop) and pierre schoeman(prop)

    • @bellevueace6
      @bellevueace6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a fair shout. As good as Van der Merwe is playing, you have to remember that SA rugby is drenched with similarly talented players is most positions.
      Personally I think it’s a good thing if the best-of-the-rest of SA rugby can choose to live, work, pay taxes and commit allegiance to get themselves on the international stage with another country. It’s an absolute treat.
      I’d only tentatively include Steyn on your list though because with a Scottish mother it is hardly a tenuous connection.
      The other three, though, are as Scottish as a Braai ;)

      @@Dayl_Adams you took him, Duhan didn't apply to play for Scotland, you can't do that, you get called as a player and then the player makes the decision to accept the call. Scotland took him, Wales did the same thing with another South African player. I was surprised that even France has a South African player(Willemse). Especially British nations they sometimes look to steal a few of our players, it is a fact, don't deny it. I use the word "take" because I know that British nations sometimes scout for South Africans of British decent, looking to see who might join their National team.
