  • My first weekend watching full rugby matches and I get this treat!
I watched this live, so for the reaction video I highlighted key moments from both Scotland and England in their 2019 Calcutta Cup match. And there were a lot of them... no surprise the video ran long, but I hope you all still enjoy.
    What a crazy rugby match!

I have to say, your understanding of, not only the basics of the game, but many of the more subtle nuances, is very impressive for someone who has been watching the game for such a relatively short time. Not only that, but your questions and comments are always well thought through and are always relevant to the state of the game and the tactical situations. Being a player for over 20 years, and a coach for many as well, may I say well done sir, and I’m delighted you are enjoying your rugby discovery.

I'd argue with greatest when you consider in 1990 everything was on the line, Title, Grand Slam, Triple Crown, Calcutta Cup. A cocky dominant England were beaten 13-7 by Scotland in probably the most intense match i've ever seen.

As a rugby fan I would say this is one of the most embarrassing games ever played. The first half was a clear mismatch, two team that SHOULDN’T have be matched in the same competition. Followed by a completely amateurish display by England in the second half. NFL fans must wonder why we bother with this schoolboy stuff! For a great game I’d say Japan v Scotland 2019 or England v New Zealand also rwc 2019.

This is the biggest comeback points-wise in the 130 year history of Test rugby. Last years game was legendary but the whole context of this year's, Scotland's huge injury list added to their already underdog status, England wanting to right their "humiliation", etc makes it a contender if not the absolute best Calcutta cup ever.

For what its worth these are my observations:
5:10 this is difficult, it is fairly routine but us mortals would often miss, this is really high level though and he is one of the smoothest kickers.
10:46 you can see the scot No 5 come in from the side of the ruck, which is a penalty. I think the ref wants to let play flow, so he shouts 5 a couple of times to tell him to get out and stop interfereing. The player doesn't pay attention so he gives the penalty
12:16 if the ball lands off the pitch it is out, if the player holding the ball steps off the pitch it is out. My understanding is that everything else is fair game. It is rare, but you can actually have a ball that is 10m off the pitch in the air, a player can jump (feet not touching the ground out of play), knock the ball back onto the pitch and carry on playing. (It it crazy to see in a real game).
22:30 the 17 maybe should have kept the ball, the 8 receiving the hospital pass probably should have either left it rather than try and catch it or maybe done a little kick. In both cases it is worth saying that they are forwards. We are big, generally lumbering, poor at passing and poor at receiving!
25:43 don't stress, it is obvious you just mixed them up, but it is just as well it was Wales and Scotland. Mix England up with either of them and you would be eyeball deep in doodoo!
28:15 not entirely sure of the tactics, to me it seemed that neither side had particularly good options, so they opted to kick, slowing the game down a bit and hoping for a mistake, or something to open up. I don't think tiredness plays a huge roll as I have seen this ping pong from kick off - it is normally a sign of a boring game to come.
29:25 It isn't the worst tackle I've seen. When you see it at full speed it looks to me like he is just trying to stop and pull put of the tackle, but he doesn't wrap the arms around so to me it is a penalty, but I didn't think it was deliberate or dirty.
31:22 in a ruck you have to stay on your feet. To get the ball you need to drive over it. You can't just reach over and try and take the ball. I think the rule is to keep the game flowing, rather than for safety.
34:15 the ball is meant to go straight down the middle. As with most things in rugby it is a law which is interpreted by the ref, rather than a rigid rule with no flexibility. I have spoken with International players who have said they will always push the limits at the beginning of a game to see exactly what the ref will allow and what he will not (crooked lineouts, how far you can push up before he rules you offside, how long you can take before releasing a ball after the tackle etc.) All the players on both sides will watch this and adjust their play accordingly.
43:00 this is one of my favourite bits of the game. I love how even highly charged, hard fought international matches finish with everyone shaking all of the opposition players hands, it is one of the reasons that it has been one of the fastest growing sports in the US, especially with inner city kids, who are learning that you can play hard, be physical but still show respect and be friendly after the game.
I hope all of that helps. I have to say it is amazing to see how quickly you pick all of this up and you obviously work hard to understand as well as having a gift for analysing the game.
Keep it up, enjoy your rugby and you have a new subscriber to accompany you on your road of discovery. Many thanks.

re 12.16 A ball in the air is in touch once it reaches the touchline, not when it hits the ground. A player in touch, but off the ground, can attempt to keep the ball in play by knocking it backwards, before it reaches the line. However, it's rare to succeed as the ball is usually already out of play.

I agree with @Chilukar about the Farrell collision - it was right to penalise Farrell who was not in sufficient control of himself, but he wasn't trying to put in a hit. If you look carefully at 30:08 you can see OF put up open palms to try to avoid the crash and to slow down a bit. But it was too late - he didn't need to risk that collision.

You missed the interception!! Thought you might have made more of Finn Russell's deception on the pass for Johnson's try. I've watched that shot of him not only looking at another player but continuing his hands through to that player as he gives it to Johnson about 20 times. Genius!!

    • @ignorantamerican
      @ignorantamerican  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I know - it was an accident to not include the interception. I wrote a response previously to another comment on this explaining missing Russell's interception: I meant to show it as one big clip with the previous try Scotland scored because it all happened so quickly. It was a huge momentum swing with those back-to-back tries. Unfortunately I jumped to my next bookmarked clip before the interception... hopefully lesson learned for future videos!

    • @jlm4455
      @jlm4455 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ignorantamerican Bit of background for you on that intercept try. Off 1st phase (when a team runs first play after getting the ball) England typically run a triangle of 3 players behind the 10. This gives Farrell 3 options to pass to with the idea it holds the oppositions defensive line because they're not sure which of 3 will receive the pass.
However, throughout the 6nations Farrell had time and again gone to the middle option. Russell obviously watched some film and saw that. One of Farrell's major weaknesses? Is he tends to be very robotic at times and repeats basic plays (blocked kick another example). You combine both? Russell had a damn good idea what was coming.
Russell when he is on is the best attacking 10 in the world not named Beauden Barrett. The main issues for Russell? He often plays behind a pack of forwards that puts him on the back foot. Which makes it almost impossible to do much. Think of a Quarterback under a constant pass rush.
Farrell on the other hand? Is more consistent & a better game manager. Yet? That is made far easier by Farrell constantly playing behind a pack that gives him all the time in the world.
In 2nd half that broke down and we saw the difference in his play versus Russell who suddenly had time.

If you re watch the last Scottish try closely the reason there was a hole in the English line was because the pass from Finn Russell (Scottish 10) was a no look. Russell was looking at the man behind and deeper than Johnson but gave the no look pass to Johnson. Absolutely insane from Russell

  • @KatDiCuenzo

Probably the most impressive part about the first Scotland try often goes unmentioned.. the try scorer is number 2, McInally, as the hooker he's one of the biggest men on the team. The fact that he's being chased by a winger and a fly half and manages to make it, is incredible.
I fully agree with your assessment about running lines, momentum and directional changes, but from the half way line, as the fastest men on the field they should catch him all day long.
Evidently, Stuart doesn't care for physics.

I'm really impressed with how much of the game you have grasped in such short time. I'm enjoying the format of watching blocks of matches rather than exclusively highlight reels and I appreciate your efforts in trying to dissect the rulebook and give the game more credit than it being only big hits and clever trick plays.
Saying this, if you do any more player montages can I recommend
"Mike brown tribute ~ the slippery one"
My dad and I were watching Mike play wing and full back for his club side Harlequins for almost 10 years, saying every evening on the train home he should be playing for England, he was overlooked constantly. Besides coaches maybe worrying about his temper it was irrational. He started getting selected in his late twenties and instantly became one of the most valuable and dependable players in the squad. In the short stint he became (I believe) England's most-capped full back. These highlights show him in his best form over the course of 2-3 years, despite being fairly average in size he would make yards on every carry and more impressively after the first and often second tackle. He would chase kicks and catch the ball when it was already in his opponents pocket. And he would tackle players with a finger tip and floor then when they had 50 metres of open field to run into and a certain try. A great watch for his bravery and determination as much as his obvious athleticism and skill, against the southern hemisphere teams too. Cheers Dan, keep up the good work!

I thought it might be worth summarising the soap opera context for this match. Scotland have been bad for a long time. They have been playing better the last few years but not winning, especially away from home. They haven't won at Englands ground since 1983.
Last year England played Scotland in Edinburgh. Before the match there was a fight in the tunnel reportedly started by Scotlands (currently injured) 8, and resident lunatic (every team needs one) Ryan Wilson. Scotland then went on shock England by winning with some swashbuckling rugby, including Finn Russel's Pass Of The Century.
This year, Scotland seemed to have regressed to not winning matches, and England seemed to be like they ever were, no making mistakes, taking changes, and winning. There was quite a lot of smack talked before the game about revenge for last year, and as a Scotland fan, I was scared. At 35 mins, I was resigned to being humiliated.
So that made the comeback and almost-win all the sweeter.

  • @charlcoetzee3358
    @charlcoetzee3358 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The passage of play at 10:55 is quite technical.
Scottish player gets tackled, 2 English players are on their feet contesting for the ball. So that could’ve been a penalty, but the ref let it go because it looks like one of the Englishmen managed to get hold of it. Then the Scottish No5 clears them out, but from the side of the ruck AND falls over the ball sealing it off for England. Both are infractions and England get the penalty.
This is where it gets interesting. As soon as the penalty is awarded, the offside line is set to 10m back.
From a penalty play can be restarted by a scrum or a kick. Usually the kick is for territory and a lineout, or a kick at goal for 3 points, but sometimes a player (usually the scrumhalf) spots an opportunity. While the opposition is still figuring out what the referee decided, and before they have reset their defensive line 10m back, the player kicks the ball to themself (called a “tap” kick) and restarts play that way. All opposition players within the 10m area are offside at this point and if any of them attempt to tackle it will be another penalty 10m closer or even a yellow card.
In this case England exploited it perfectly and got a sneaky try out of it. The scrumhalf usually does this on instinct without time to consult with the captain. Sometimes it works, sometimes it backfires.

Well done mate. You have picked up many of the nuances of the game much faster than other people new to the game. Also, the use of television replays enables you to disect the many moves/strategies much better than if you were watching a game at the stadiums. As you have also discovered there are many "plays" used in American Football and also Rugby League that could and have been used in Rugby. Coaches are always looking at other successful play that could be used that opposition teams have not worked out counters to. Particularly with the relative non-stop nature of the game. Great analysis, if you watch the Sam Johnson try again, Finn Russell is looking at the runner behind Johnson so the English defence read Russell’s body language and his eyes and tuilagi rushes up and try’s to hit runner behind Johnson, opening up and while and creating a dog leg. Russell then hits Johnson flat and he goes through. Like the commentator said he did them with the eyes.

That Farrell kick is fairly routine for elite kickers. Laidlaw, Sexton, Biggar, Halfpenny etc also often have percentages in excess of 80-90%. You're dead right about it being a very difficult kick though, most players would have percentages of 25% at most. That's why most players don't kick at goal.

Firstly I'm impressed at how you are picking up on nuances in the game so quickly. Take a bow my friend, take a bow :-)
To put McInally's try in perspective, it would be like a tightend outrunning a corner and a safety.
You ask for some feedback on Genge's offload instead of taking the tackle and creating a ruck. Well that is like 20/20 vision. In retrospect, when you know the outcome, yes he should have taken the tackle while securing the ball. However if his pass had gone to hand then a try was likely, you pays your money and takes your chance.
On the Farrell hit of Graham.... well Farrell has previous of doing this and I think he should have had a yellow card (no arm tackle is illegal and he has an obligation not to injure the opposition). I would suggest he was taken off because he had become a liability.
Russell's pass for the 4th try was beautiful... go watch his pass in last years game. If you think this was good, well it will blow your mind.
I have the feeling you will become an avid Rugby watcher. This is the year to become a fan... World Cup Year :-)
Go watch the end of South Africa v Japan in the last World Cup, I think you will enjoy that, very much. USA have the opportunity to become a real force in World Rugby, it is a sport for all shapes and sizes and it would be amazing to have your country competing with the rest of the World. All the best to you and yours :-)

No. It would be like a Defensive End picking up a fumble and outrunning a WR & a RB. In fairness McInally (Rambo) was at one time a flanker. So he has unusual speed for a Hooker.

I just want to point out the secret to good offense is quick ball at the ruck as it does not give defenders time to regroup and set a solid line of defenders that are spaced evenly across the field. Quick ball at the ruck also nullifies a rush defence.

Think it's safe to say you're a fully fledged rugby fan. Well done and welcome.
Rugby is a growing sport in the US with MLR and I really hope it gains traction like the MLS has done and becomes a well spectated sport.
Unfortunately for the USA national team they're in the group of death with England, Argentina and France for the World Cup. That said, the US team beat Italy recently and Italy only just lost out to France so the US could get a win. An unexpected win against Argentina akin to the Japan vs South Africa match could put you guys in the mix. It will be really good for world rugby if America have a good tournament and make a name for themselves. I can honestly foresee a Northern Hemishere tournament with a relegation system that could see America join the '6 Nations'.
Speaking of the world cup, I can't see England winning it. They have a very high pressure style play and that will wear the players down over a longer tournament and the more worn down they get they'll also be coming up against better teams. Plus, as pre mentioned, they don't have an easy group.
I hope you stay involved in watching rugby going forward, especially due to the World Cup this year. Your content is amazing, get more people involved and drag them along on your journey.
I am definitely biased but rugby is the greatest sport in the world and the rugby community is simply the best.

We all love the game, and the players play hard, but at the end of the whistle, we get drunk and sing songs together, no matter what colour or sex or age you are, or nationality or ethnicity. As we saw in 1995, and President Mandela, it is a game for all, that can make friends, not division.

Tom Curry has blown it out of the park this tournament, at 20 years old this his first six nations and he's been nominated as one of the players of the tournament making multiple teams of the tournament and being nominated for player of the six nations. This is not completely expected as England are relatively famous for having very few top level flankers however curry has somewhat come out of no where taking his place this tournament as a world class flanker. You could say he's getting first tournament luck which is when a new player who has a lot of talent and it's their first six nations they are basically an unknown entity therefore teams don't know how to deal with them, players such as Hogg, Farrel, Stockdale, and North have all benefited from this in the past.

The touch line is the boundary for the ball carrier, or in this case (12:23) the ball. As long as the ball doesn't cross the touch line the players can effectively do what they want. The argument is that if they choose to be out of the playing field, they do so at their own team's detriment (meaning that if they want to be outside the touch line, they'll only have 14 players on the field which would be an advantage to the opposing side). So in brief - you can run up along the outside of the touch line, as long as you don't have the ball in hand. No problem.

I have to agree that your understanding of Rugby is really impressive in the short amount of time you have been watching it. Rugby is a complicated game due to the different advantages offered by the different types of physical characteristics of the people playing by the game. Add to this 1000 years of history, fighting for your rights to be who you are, then you have a game that connects to our souls. As a welsh man it connects me to my soul and defines who I am. The All Blacks for instance define this in a way that epitomizes the game. But even as a Welsh man and probably a New Zealander would also agree, Scotland v England is really The Game!

Hey Dan, great to watch your reactions and see that rugby has made an impression with you across the pond! I would like to suggest you watch two games from the 2007 World Cup in France - both between South Africa and England. The teams first met in the pool games where SA absolutely humiliated England with a 36-0 victory. England however improved greatly through the remaining games and ended up meeting South Africa in the final of the World Cup. This game was definitely much more competitive and had an English try disallowed, which quite possibly would have changed the outcome of the game. Apart from seeing the great improvement by England between these two games, you'll also see some of the best and legendary players of the game: Victor Matfield (Amazing at lineout reading), Brian Habana (one of the fastest players on the planet), Percy Montgomery (one of the shortest run-ups for place kicks), Fourie Du Preez (considered among the best scrumhalves in the world), Bakkies Botha (The enforcer!), Jonny Wilkinson (One of the best kicking flyhalves of our generation), Francois Steyn (known for super long goal kicks and drop goals), Jason Robinson (super slippery and agile player). In addition to these Mike Catt and Os Du Randt were both players who played in the 1995 World Cup (which you have covered in some of your videos). Mike Catt was steamrollered by Jonah Lomu (unfortunately how many people will remember him) whilst Os Du Randt ended up being one of only 6 players (at the time) to have won more than one World Cup and to this day the only South African with this achievement.

Each teacher coming up with weak ass reasons why I should play for them to such an extent that I hate the game. Now at age 44 it has taken this ignorant American to show me the passion for the game.
Good on you mate. Think I'll go and watch some of your other videos as well. I Loved this one.

I'm one of those Scotland fans who turned off at 31-zip in disgust. My boss called me halfway through the 2nd half and told me to turn back on. That was a truly incredible match. I can't tell you how gutted I was that England managed to level it at the death. Watching this reaction vid brought the pain back. 2 things to point out. At about minute 78, Scotland had the opportunity to bundle Johnny May into touch (was it Johnny May? I can't remember). That would have secured Scotland possession assuming they didn't blow the lineout and the game would have been won. They didn't manage it, which is credit to the amazing feet of May. 2nd point. Fin Russell (Scotland's fly half) is world class. He has incredible play-making vision. He is the man most responsible for that comeback. He'd make a world 15 any day of the week. For me, the best fly half in the world. Hey man. I have enjoyed watching these reaction videos. You have picked up some of the subtlties of this sport really quickly, which is no mean feat because it is incredibly complicated. Respect 👊

FYI, the Calcutta Cup was made from the 271 Indian shillings remaining from a disbanded rugby club in British India, the remaining coins were smelted down to create the trophy

    Good day Sir,
Final verdict of this game, "Play till the final whistle blows!" Both teams had ups and downs, but both teams played till the final whistle and it ended up in a draw. Back to the drawing board for these Teams and getting ready for the World-Cup. 2019 is a great rugby year, personally best rugby year ever. The 3 Southern Hemisphere Titans, New-Zealand, South Africa and Australia always dominate the World Cup's. But this year the Northern Hemisphere match if not best some of those Titans down south. Great time to be a rugby supporter,
Thanks for the content and Hope I helped in some way or another.
    Regards.

I can't wait to see you cover some of the content in the world cup. It's also inspired me to learn more about the NFL to see how those games compare.

As a Welsh bloke i'm a massive Rugby fan but also I have been a massive NFL fan since the mid 80's. Thumbs up to you for the analysis. Have you had a NFL game analysed in the same manner?
