Posted this before, so here goes.
Two teams of 15 each. Each team gets up to 8 substitutions. The game lasts 80 minutes, divided into two 40 minute halves.
On offense, you can run, pass, or kick. Forward passes are illegal. You're also not allowed to fumble the ball forward (called a knock-on). Blocking is also illegal. There's no downs or limits on possession. You can keep the ball as long as you want. However, most teams, if they're backed up inside their half will punt it away.
Defense tries to stop you by tackling, intercepting passes, and stealing the ball. Unlike in football, there's no stoppage in play when a player gets tackled. The game keeps going.
    There's 4 ways of scoring:
Try - the rugby equivalent to a touchdown. If you touch the ball down in the other team's endzone, you score 5 points.
Conversion - similar to the PAT on football, but worth 2 points. The kick has to be taken from any spot in a line parallel to the sideline from where the try was scored.
Penalty kick - for serious infractions, the ref can award a penalty kick at the goal posts. The kick is taken from the spot of the infraction off a tee. It's worth 3 points.
Drop goal - similar to a field goal. Drop kick between the posts taken during open play. Also worth 3 points
There's a few other elements to the game:
Ruck: when the ball carrier gets tackled, play keeps going. The tackler has to release the player, and the player has to release the ball. At that point, other players on the offense rush in to protect the ball, and defenders rush in to try to clear them out of the way in order to gain possession.
Maul: moving dog pile. Offense binds together to march down the field, and the defense tries to push them back. (Saw that in the first try that was scored.)
Scrum: essentially a group wrestling match for the ball. Usually the way to restart play after a minor infraction like a forward pass.
Lineout: when the ball or the ball carrier goes out of bounds, the team that didn't touch the ball last gets the throw in at a lineout. Players from both teams line up a yard apart while the ball is thrown in between them. (At the beginning of the video, the play that leads to the first try, that's a lineout that becomes a maul.)

To answer some of your questions you are watching Rugby Union here. A “Flanker” is a position in Rugby Union. There are two flankers in each team they play on the outside of the scrum. The fifteen positions in rugby are easily identifiable as the number on the players jersey will correspond to his position. Although players may move around the pitch freely throughout most of the match their position will determine the kind of job they do and the skill set required. In days of old it was said you could tell someone’s position by simply looking at him i.e each position had a set body type. At amateur level this is still the case mostly but in the professional era top level players, whilst still retaining this to a degree have become more uniform as their diets and exercise are heavily regulated like in any professional sport to gain optimal results.
The fifteen positions are also usually broken down into two sub categories, forwards and backs. The forwards tend to be the bigger stronger heavier players who do the thankless tasks of pushing, rucking, mauling etc in order to win and retain possession of the ball and they also perform the scrum and line out play. The number on the forwards jersey determines his position in the scrum. The lower number being nearer the middle of the scrum.
The backs are usually smaller and lighter and therefore perform the fast runs, big passes, slicker faster play and usually score most of the points. The position on the back of the backs jersey determines where he usually stands waiting to receive the pass from set play I.e scrum line out etc.
The positions are named as follows
    1. Loose head Prop
    2. Hooker
    3. Tight head Prop
    4. Second Row (aka Lock)
    5. Second Row (aka Lock)
    6. Flanker
    7. Flanker
    8. Number 8 (no really)
    Those are the forwards
    9. Scrum half
    10. Stand off (aka fly half, out half)
    11. Winger
    12. Inside Centre
    13. Outside Centre
    14. Winger
    15. Fullback
    And those are the backs
The replacements are numbered 16 through 23 and can come into play at any time and in international play almost always take the field at some point as they must be used if a player is bleeding heavily or the referee is worried he may be concussed so that he can receive appropriate treatment. Replacements are also used tactically as fresh legs can help inject a bit of much needed vigour into a team.
There are lots of great rugby beginners videos on TH-cam which will help you learn about the positions. Knowing this will help you understand the game better and learn who is doing what, when and why.
And lastly “why did he kick that ball to himself.” In rugby when taking a free kick or penalty they can choose to have a scrum, kick for goal (scoring 3 points if successful), kick for touch, ie kick the ball out for a line out getting far from your own half and into your opponents half instead. However there is no law that states you have to kick the ball a certain distance (in this instance) and so sometimes the player will simply kick it lightly to himself and run on if he see a gap or catches a defence napping. Used in this instance to great effect. English 🤬!!!.
The game you just watched is the oldest international in Rugby where Scotland and England compete for the Calcutta cup. This was given to the English RFU when the Calcutta rugby club in India disbanded, gathered together all their funds in silver rupees and melted the coins down to make the trophy. Scotland and England have a long and turbulent history and this fixture is heavily anticipated every year and nothing beats being at Murrayfield live watching the Scots lift that trophy high and send those arrogant b#stards home “to think again.” However rugby is a game which commands great respect, unlike in football (soccer) the fans of opposing teams sit together, and there’s never trouble. At every match you shake hands with your opposition and referees, show respect in victory and grace in defeat. Then the teams form a tunnel at the end and as your opposition and referees walk off you applaud them. Then you walk through your opponents tunnel and they applaud you. Rugby players, even at the highest level never argue with the referee. His decision is final and must be respected. This is instilled in rugby players from a young age and is very character building. After matches even at schoolboy level both teams put on club shirts and ties and eat and drink together. It’s a very character building sport.
Sorry for the novel. Got a bit carried away but love seeing folk getting into rugby. Especially in countries where it isn’t a big deal. The more the merrier. Hope this helps. Oh and come on Scotland!!! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

What you really mean is the forwards can be identified by their look and their physique and attitude. Forwards are big, honest, open men, true gentlemen, they are manly and stand tall. They do things like car repair, grass mowing, beer drinking and pipe smoking. They dress like men. They own labradourd, springer spaniels or hunting hounds. They drive volvos and landrovers or powerful roadsters. They drink tea and espresso coffee.
Backs, on the other hand are a shifty and effeminate bunch, they mince when they walk, drink white wine spritzers with umbrellas, like flower arranging, romcom movies and peach schnapps. Some wear make up and perfume. They often wear frilly clothes and like lace. They usually have a lot of soft furnishings in their homes and they like chihuahuas and miniature poodles with pink ribbons. They drink soy lattes.

He kicked it to himself because he was awarded a 'penalty' (the other team did something wrong), which gives the team several choices including:
    1. tap (kick) to yourself and play on - this is the one he chose
    2. kick at goal with the ball on the ground (like a field goal in NFL), 3pts if successful
    3. kick to touch (out of play) and your team takes the throw (normally it goes to the team who didn't kick it out)
    4. scrum, and your team gets to put the ball in which means you're more likely to win it.

Flankers are the 2 players on either side of the scrum and back of the lineouts. Open side is usually quicker, blindside is usually bigger and slower but stops 8 pick ups off scrums. Flankers are also the main position which make turnovers either from holding on in the ruck or a jackal where they take the ball quickly before defenders can get to the ruck.

There are 2 Flankers in each team, no's 6&7 and make up the Forwards with 6 other players. There's the Openside Flanker, usually quicker and leaner and the Blindside Flanker, usually a bit bigger but just as fast. They're involved in all parts of the game and superb all round athletes. (RITCHIE McCAW for N.Z. brilliant openside Flanker) Best seen in a scrum where they position themselves on the outside (Flank) of the scrum, openside flanker closest to the open field and the blindside opposite. They're the first to break away from the scrum once the ball is in play and attack if the opposition has the ball. A position not for the faint-hearted!
Yes, you're right, the term Touchdown did come from Rugby, Rugby continues to touch the ground with the ball where NFL did away with that rule but continue to use it obviously.
Did you say Wall when the players were pushing forward? It's MAUL, (sorry if I misheard you) There has to be a least 3 players involved with the ball before a Maul can be formed, when the player with the ball is still on his feet, his opponent has hold of him near the try line, the players teammate is also in touch with the player with the ball the (forwards) come along and push them fwd to gain a try, but they must all stay on their feet until over the line. One thing on the touchdown / try, there's a couple interesting differences between American football and rugby, as you say you don't actually touch the ball down in the end zone. In rugby if you run over the line you can still be tackled, you can also tackle a player and hold the ball up, so if the attacking playing doesn't touch the ball down, no try. There's some famous examples of this, one being the then England captain Will Carling - I think the TH-cam video is something like 'Will Carling can't get it down'. Anyway, the other point for touching it down is, you get 5 points for a try, but then you get the chance for a coversion which is worth 2 points, this is kicking the ball in between the posts. Where you take this kick from is determined by the touchdown, the kick is inline with that point. So that's why players will often run round to touch the ball down behind the posts to make it easier to convert for more points - but as previously said you can still be tackled.
You can take the ball back as far as you like (in that half) to try and improve the angle but obviously adds distance... So yeah.

A flanker is one of the positions in rugby. The English player kicked the ball to himself because he was awarded a penalty and chose to quickly attack a disorganised Scottish defence. When you are awarded a penalty in rugby you can kick for goal to get three points (like a field goal), kick the ball out of play and get possesion where the ball out, or kick it to yourself like the English player did.

Flanker is the most fun to play. Imagine an interceptor that works with the forwards and backs.
It's a mix position that works with the forwards & backs. It requires the strength of a forward, the speed of a back and a flexible mindset to work with both :)
It has a funny dynamic of players depending on their skills. I was a slim bloke that used technical tackles, but my counter was a big bastard that was very nippy.
It was great to play that position, had to give it up as a fractured knee stopped me :(

A flanker is a wing forward. There are two, open and blind. They bind on the edge of the scrum left and right, the open on the side that has most field space, the blind on the other. They are generally considered the most mobile of the pack. Post scrum, the open side will seek to leave the scrum early and seek to disrupt the opposing pass, usually to the opposing fly half. Open side flankers love crushing fly halves.

Yes, "touchdown" in American football comes from rugby even though you don't actually touch it down any more. "Try" comes from the original rugby football where touching it down allowed to have a "try" at goal. That is where rugby's conversion and American football's extra point come from, although both sports now give more points for the actual touchdown than the goal.

    Rugby Union.
You cannot tackle someone without the ball, so when you kick the ball, you turn the defence and if you kick into open space, you are in a strong position to re-gather the ball. The 'try' to convert the ball over the goal posts after a try, it taken perpendicular to where the ball is touched down. This is why the players try to get as close to the post before 'touching down'.
You do need to know about 'offside'. If you imagine that there is a line from touch line to touch line that passes through the ball, if a player (on your side) is in front of that line, they are potentially offside. This is why you pass the ball behind that imaginary line. When the ball is punted forward, then the kick has to move this imaginary offside line forward so that all his team mates in front of him are brought onside (these offside players must retreat so that they are onside once again). The offside line goes through the centre of the scrum and the line out. The difference is the back foot of the scrum defines where the 'back' can stand and for the line out, the backs must be 10 metres back from the offside line.

A flanker (there are two of them) are forwards and scrum down on the outside of the scrum, one on each side. Like all players on the pitch, they have specific qualities and the flanker's job is to be the first line of defence from a scrum when the opposing team are attacking. They are also expected to be the first ones to a breakdown (when someone is tackled) to attempt to secure the ball for their team. Physically, they have generally to be big and strong (like all the forwards) but their duties also require speed of foot to be successful. Here's a site which endeavours to explain the player's positions which might be of some use to you.

The American intercollegiate rugby football association gradually, over several years, changed the rules after the 1876 rugby season to evolve the NFL you have today. It was in 1900 that the rule to effect a score "on or above" the goal line was changed (what is referred to as "breaking the plane").
The NFL is rugby with rule changes that have made it into a different game.

The easiest wat to tell if it's Union or League, is there are no Lineouts in League. They also break after each tackle completed, with the defending team having to retreat 10 yards (except the markers)

There's 2 flanker blind side and open side there the play makers in the forward pack usually the smallest in the forward pack but probably the most agile and skillful

A flanker is a position in rugby.
They are an important tackling position.
Similar to a MLB in the NFL.

Rugby union is the global version of the game. In Australia they dont really understand the rules so they watch the very simplified version known as league. If rugby union is chess, then league is checkers.

You're getting interested in the game at the right time! The Rugby World Cup is on at the moment (union - don't worry about league), and unlike US sports, a 'world cup' actually involves other countries playing! So there are a bunch of nations competing, including the US! Should be able to find a channel in the US showing the matches.

The easiest ways to determine if it's league are - A tackle count next to the score (either saying something like 3 or 3rd), more NFL like field markings, players just getting up and rolling the ball backwards after a tackle and no dogpiles, and a V shaped design on the shirts (not all teams have the V, but a lot of them do).
If you don't see any of those, but you see dogpiles, a lot more kicking, scrums, etc then it's going to be Union that you are watching. Union is played in man more countries than League and you are 99% only going to be seeing League if it's Australian domestic teams and commentators on the videos.

One of the best games I have ever seen was a game between two top Irish sides. I think it was the European Cup Final.
If my memory is correct it was Leinster and Ulster, brilliant game, just did not stop.
A really good one to watch.
