@@NashKetchum I'd say Mazda is one of thee most creative manufacturers to this day. There were prestiged in the raceworld with the 767b in the 90's, and in todays day and age they are one of the only, if not the only to say they aren't ditching gasoline motors in the next decade, they believe they can make them just as economical. They push the competition always, like this year making the Mazda3 AWD is truely 1 up on other sedans even some luxury brands. They may not be legendary status yet but 20 years this path they will be.
Jake AWD is a desperate gimmick imo. There are very few instances where AWD is noticeably better than FWD with equivalent tires. All AWD does is add an expensive and complicated drivetrain to an unreliable brand, with a platform based on the old Ford Focus. As far as this whole electric craze, it’s just for show and publicity. 99.78% sold in the US are gasoline, doesn’t look like anyone is walking away from that anytime soon.
@@NashKetchum I see your point for everyday driving, AWD is rather pointless. Unless you live in Canada or Northern states, AWD is a blessing for winter here. Also getting to the cottage in the summer on half grown over muddy roads makes AWD a blast compared to fWD :)

You should never compare a cvt to a geared transmission. Cvt's are always $hit and designed for profit and early retirement. Probably the better comparison considering Honda and Nissan have all sold out, utilizing cvt's on nearly their entire lineup.
@@EleisonUA sorry if it came across like that. I'm not mad. Just bothered by this throwaway society. Cvts simply are not built to last. When they go they're expensive to fix. Usually the car becomes a junkyard ornament. Then they expect you to repurchase another one. Not to mention they are sluggish and cheap while they are in service. I just strongly dislike this unsustainable society we live in. Everything is for profit. Being that I work in the auto business, I see many parts designed to wear out or break. Cvts are a strong example of that. For the record, If I had to buy a cvt, which I wouldn't, it would be a Toyota or subaru
I love James's enthusiasm for these small cars like the Mazda3 and VW Jetta. I feel the same way and feel like a lot of popular car review guys expect a every car to be a super car and crap on them when it's totally not even a fair review
What a damn shame. The pre-facelift Elantra was beautiful. I really thought they had something with that design. They took cues from Audi with the grille, headlights looked Jaguar inspired. Then they decided to facelift the thing 3 years after its debut... and now it looks like garbage.
I thought it looked alright before, not great but not bad. Definitely hideous now...don't know why Asian car (looking at Toyota/Honda mostly) manufacturers are making their compacts and even midsize cars have all these ugly jagged "futuristic/sporty" lines on their front fascias. Mazda definitely stands out as looking far more elegant and clean.
I like the front drooping nose of the old Elantra, metal sheet design around the headlight gave hint of Jaguar. 2019 iteration is designed by a korean i guess because it looks edgy!
VW are the ones that started the big bold front grill trend. Back in 06. Every car has followed that trend until recent. Now most companies have been designing their own grill. Its about time. Hyundai is stuck with that stupid grill though.

The torsion beam was needed, the hatches in particular chew through rear strut mounts with the independent setup in the older gens. And once you see how much sheet metal they added on the hatch vs previous gens, you can see why torsion beam was needed.
It will eventually. They didn't immediately heve the manual in high trims when they released the previous gen for the 2014 model year. Still won't be able to get manual AWD though.
As a current owner of a Mazda6 Signature and a previous owner of a Mazda3, Mazda is doing amazing things with their interior. The car is still super fun to drive, but sitting inside the car is just pure bliss. Especially the white interior, just so serene and holy hell is it comfortable. Also, you can steer the Mazda6 with like one, maybe 2 fingers, max when just cruising
I like all of the Mazda lineup. All of them! Idk much about cars, but their look just speaks to me. It's great to know that the looks are matched with rave reviews.
Is this even a fair comparison? The new Mazda3 is going to walk all over the class for the next two years, especially Korean brands. I drove one, and have a 2018. The 2019 is on another level entirely.
No. A Kia Forte in 2014 literally tied the mazda 3 in all numbers (car and driver 2014) and had an automatic. Imagine what the next gen Forte will do. Keep laughing.
ThePariss333 the 2020 Elantra’s interior looks good. But not this one, i mean it’s not bad it’s beautiful actually. It’s just Mazda 3 has a better interior. It’s classy and clean.
Down here in the nasty, dirty, un-Canadian USA, you can buy a newer 2020 Elantra with CVT transmission that gets even better gas mileage for just $16,600 out-the-door price. Compare that to any Mazda3. The Elantra has an ugly face, but as far as car for money it is a very good deal. If you get the Fluid Metal Gray paint it does not looks that ugly.

Test drove the 2019 Mazda 3 and it’s needs more power and a better way to change the radio station. I loved the whole car aside from those things but those are BIG THINGS. Why put paddle shifters on it when it’s so sluggish? Also put a hand break on it so I can drift in the snow
Next time you guy should take the Mazda 3's competition out back and put it out of it's misery with some dignity! The Hyundai Elantra was a sinking ship as soon as we seen the interiors! X )
I bought a 2018 Elantra which I think looks much better than the 2019. But I really wanted it for the fuel economy and cheap maintenance. It has the same drive train and atkinson cycle 2.0L engine as the 2019. I like the idea of having a larger engine that's detuned a little making less power compared to example a smaller 1.5L GDI turbo that has more parts to break or service and is being pushed harder to make power. The 2.0L in the Elantra is also an MPI so no GDI carbon build up issues or high pressure expensive injectors. The list goes on with the Elantra with things like rear drum brakes that should last 150'000km with non-agressive driving and are protected from road debris which is an issue for rear disc brake cars if you drive in winter or dirt roads a lot, traditional 6 speed automatic planatary gear transmission which feels great and should be more reliable than a CVT for example. I've found that I can drive mine faster than average people on the roads and still get 7-8L per 100km fuel economy which is great. The infotainment with Hyundai/Kia is better than any other car I've been in, plus Android auto works flawlessly and the touch screen is large and very responsive with well designed software. So I'm happy for long term with this car.
If they brought back MazdaSpeed in this era, this company would be running the car market. They're beautiful, high quality, reliable, and inexpensive... they just don't have much power. Yet still, they're super fun.
Mazda is really aiming higher, it is the new entry level luxory vehicle and their flagships (6, cx 9 abd maybe rx9) will go pretty deep into audi, lexus, bmw and mercedes territory. Hyundai defenitly doesnt belong here.
I agree. As a former 04 RX8 owner, the design has aged well. And arguably, the 04 era Mazdas interior controls and overall design aesthetic was more interesting than the 19 Mazda 3 everyone seems to love.
@@leonardotorres9388 I totally agree! I owned both the 2004 Mazda 3 (new) and later the 2004 Mazda RX8 (used) and at the time I thought especially the 3's interior and entertainment controls were best in-class. They still have a charm that I feel the more neutral 2019 Mazda 3 dash and controls lack. Not that the 2019 isn't nice! It's just more in the direction of BMW which is rather bland IMHO. (I've owned Mazda 3/RX8, BMW M Roadster, as well as Corvette, Camaro, Impala, Infiniti G37, and others, so I'd like to think I'm not a blind fan boy of any one brand). My last four cars were $55-72k range but I'd feel comfortable in a 19 Mazda 3 in all ways except probably the engine would be a little let down for me. I've always had Mazda in the back of my mind, if only they could step up on the horsepower.
What an incredibly stupid comparison. They should have compared the mazda to the elantra sport with the fully independent suspension and 201hp. Mazda still looks better ( hyundai really dropped the ball with the refresh) but the sport is quicker and more fun to drive. Would have been a better comparison. Also motortrend did find that the torsion beam on the mazda was a step backwards and the ride is now definitely less refined.
I'm loving the new Mazda3. It will probably be my next car, although I'm glad I don't need a car right now because I'm looking forward to Skyactiv-X. The Elantra looks awful, not only compared to the Mazda3, but even compared to last year's Elantra. I wasn't considering one anyways, but they really butchered the redesign.
I wish they would just make steering ratios adjustable to the driver's preference, but I guess that may not be feasible at this price point. Great review, love that you mix in some comedy!
They usually offer Sport, Eco and Comfort modes, which affect steering and throttle, on the upper trims, even in compacts now. The Kia Forte also has a "Smart" mode, which responds to your driving style.
All of mazda's new refreshes have beautiful shapes. Whoever is doing their body design needs a serious raise. Shit's giving me almost Alfa Romeo vibes.
I'm literally saving up for the downpayment to get into the sedan version of the Mazda3 as soon as I can. It's perfect for what I want. I live in a mountain area that gets snow in the winter. I dont like the look of most trucks and SUVs. There really arent many affordable sedans or coupes with AWD. I mean yea I could get snow tires but storing them and paying someone to switch them back and forth is annoying and sucks up a saturday. But really the only alternatives are what like the Nissan Altima and Subaru Impreza? Well both of those have a CVT, Nissan has shit infotainment. And I like the styling and interior of the Mazda better just at a glance.
4:13 But Mazda's SKYACTIV-G engines also operate with Atkinson/Miller cycle in the manner you describe. Hyundai's marketers harp on this point more than Mazda.
Fantastic review guys. Looks like there’ll be a new Mazda3 in my life (here in Australia) some time soon. Release is in April, and, as a bonus, the Aussie spec cars handle even better than American and Euro spec cars, although we probably won’t get AWD as an option. We also get rear air vents, probably a concession to our unbelievably hot summers. Btw, the Elantra restyle looks like it was done by a five year old. What were they thinking?
nice intro. at first, I thought you were going to do a scene from "The Jerk" (1979), featuring Steve Martin where he is standing on the side of the road trying to hitch a ride. A pick-up truck pulls up a stops and Steve's character asks, "How far you going?" The pick-up driver says, "To the end of the fence." (about 50' from where Steve's character is standing). Steve's character agrees, and says, "Ok, thanks", and gets in the truck. The truck pulls forward about the 50' to the end of the fence and says, "We're here" and Steve's character gets out. Maybe next time...

Mazda 3 AWD hatch vs Impreza hatch would be a nice comparison to see ;)
P.S. This 4th gen of Mazda 3 is stunning, planning to get one for myself soon.
Illia K what trim level?
@@whatevernevermind5960 Well, I would love to have that GT (top) trim hatch, with AWD, skyactive X, and manual, but there is no manual option for AWD with their G version, so I doubt that there will be one for X. Therefore, I'll have to go either with GT AWD Auto, or GS (mid) trim manual FWD.
P.S. Yeah I know I don't need that AWD 99% of the time and I will get worth gas mileage because of it . Tho I still want it, just for the sake of it.
You should never compare a cvt to a geared transmission. Cvt's are always $hit and designed for profit and early retirement. Probably the better comparison considering Honda and Nissan have all sold out, utilizing cvt's on nearly their entire lineup.
@@denttech2515 why so mad? I've mentioned impreza coz it's the only car that curretly sold with AWD in this segment.
The things I would do for for a new generation SPEED3 especially now that awd is in the picture.
This makes me look forward to the CX-30 even more - with the Skyactiv-X and AWD, it should be pretty compelling.
The only blog i have come across which talks about steering design bless you guys
I don’t get that Elantra front end even the rear tail lights looks more like the designers were playing with pikachu
Agree. Previous gen looks wayyy better
Previous elantra was gorgeous. The new one is looking like a cheap piece of plastic.
@@MercilessMrBrooks also Mazda 3 old it's to cheap, and new look expensive
Money. That's why. The front end is much simpler and cheaper to manufacture. Just like what VW did to the golf/gti a decade ago.
VW are the ones that started the big bold front grill trend. Back in 06. Every car has followed that trend until recent. Now most companies have been designing their own grill. Its about time. Hyundai is stuck with that stupid grill though.
Agreed. The Elantra from before was nice-looking.
Mazda is doing something right. All their new designs look good.
I want a Mazda 3 next year! No more crappy chevy cruze!
Junk that Cruz. Lmao
Korey Mayo LoL my friend bought a Cruze and it was a 🍋 LEMON
A Chevy??? Hahaha 😂😂
Great review guys. Mazda in the last decade has been utterly impressive and they have shown no signs of slowing down. Incredible considering the size of their company compared to a titan like Toyota. I will be rewarding this companies’ excellence with my wallet this spring. Me and my wife think you guys make a great review duo keep it up guys!
rollingthunder thanks and we hope you and your wife keep enjoying it! Some very cool stuff planned this year ahead
Just bought a 19 Mazda 3 and people still can't believe its a Mazda with how different the interior and exterior looks with all its updates
Jessica Tarasan they should easily believe it’s a Mazda, they have always been a cut above their class.
Facts, the new Sonata even has a cheaper interior then this, and it's a full class size above the Mazda 3. In comparison to the Mazda 6 the Sonata looks like a waste of money. Mazda's really killing it.
Great review guys. You guys make really well-done videos with plenty of hard knowledge but with a good dose of humour too. Looking forward to picking up my 2019 Mazda3 in a few days!
Awesome! Which spec did you go for?
@@jamesengelsman9369 The identical one that you drove (GT FWD sedan) in Soul Red Crystal with the white interior.
@@Varekai0723 Excellent. That's the colour to get. Caution, if the paint is as thin as it is on the Miatas, definitely protect it with something like xpel or PPF from day one!
The torsion beam was needed, the hatches in particular chew through rear strut mounts with the independent setup in the older gens. And once you see how much sheet metal they added on the hatch vs previous gens, you can see why torsion beam was needed.
This makes me feel happy to be a Mazda owner. I drive a 2017 Mazda3 manual. If only this new 3 had a manual.
It will eventually. They didn't immediately heve the manual in high trims when they released the previous gen for the 2014 model year. Still won't be able to get manual AWD though.
I need more reviews as me and my family own a car rental business and seeing reviews like these helps us make decisions funny enough. 😂
After driving in the new Mazda I fell in love with it again. The interior looks better then some luxury cars
It’s an awesome car. Best car by far that I have owned.
Great video and I love it. Feels like I'm watching the old Top Gear; proper review with laugh but without over-editing.
I like how this channel is so Canadian, we barely ever get recognized lol :)
can't believe that you guys aren't up to 500K subscribers yet. best reviews on youtube.
Don’t worry! We are just getting started.
I like all of the Mazda lineup. All of them! Idk much about cars, but their look just speaks to me. It's great to know that the looks are matched with rave reviews.
Mazda was still pretty good when they were with Ford, but now they’re even better
Is this even a fair comparison? The new Mazda3 is going to walk all over the class for the next two years, especially Korean brands. I drove one, and have a 2018. The 2019 is on another level entirely.
Kia forte 5 gt comes with 201 hp and many standard features that only luxury cars have
Tout à fait daccord!
I have a 2018 Mazda 6, it was so tough deciding which one to get, but damn these new 2019 look like a new step up, and my 2018 is already amazing!
Hey could you please mention some of the differences between 2018 and 2019 models? Thanks.
No. A Kia Forte in 2014 literally tied the mazda 3 in all numbers (car and driver 2014) and had an automatic. Imagine what the next gen Forte will do.
Keep laughing.
I just had a Mazda 3 as a rental 2 weeks ago... loved that car!!
Hyundai Elantra design like a step back to 1990 design...such a shame
Great comparison guys ! I am looking forward to the 4wd Mazda 3 .
AWD**
holy SHIT the new elantra is ugly.
The Mazda is gorgeous!!!🔥🔥🔥🤯🤯
Yeah interior looks better than a bmw
ThePariss333 hahahaha
Mazda looks so beautiful and perfect match of interior and exterior design. The work was really put into it and out of my appretiation to that, im getting one and am suv
Better thank you think
The Mazda quality and eligeint and it’s rich feeling amazing driving and handling I chooses the. Mazda 3. It’s 100% made in Japan 🇯🇵. Mazda is as good as Toyota in reliable quality. But the Mazda wins by far as comfortably to drive Mazda is the future
❤️❤️ Jeep wrangler fans ; check the 17:10S ❤️❤️
Dudes you deserve more subs keep doing your thing you'll get there.
Mazda problem rust
Zgadza się. Mazdy korodują i producent z tym nic nie robi. Szkoda bo to fajne samochody.
Creepin up to 100k....well deserved!
Calisto Riviera they should be at 1mil, people are sleeping on this channel
Not Royal Skyline yea 100%. This is my favorite one right now.
My favorite auto review channel as well.
sales figure duel vs elantra and forte?
Great video as always. Good to see the subs climbing. You guys deserve it.
Thanks Johnny!
Japan vs Korea
Love my 2020 Mazda 3, I enjoy this relaxing interior every day
Me too 😍 from Japan 🇯🇵
not buy china korea car. cheap feel brand ... they history only 10 ~ 30years others 100years over
I bought a 2018 Elantra which I think looks much better than the 2019.
I think these guys are way too strict on these cars' engines.....these are not sports cars they are every day cars.
Nice vid. I got the 2019 Mazda3 All wheel drive 2 weeks ago and love it. If only they offered the awd in a manual.
If they brought back MazdaSpeed in this era, this company would be running the car market. They're beautiful, high quality, reliable, and inexpensive... they just don't have much power. Yet still, they're super fun.
Oscar Awarded for that Intro. Continue with these hilarious intros. Great review guys!
Mazda is really aiming higher, it is the new entry level luxory vehicle and their flagships (6, cx 9 abd maybe rx9) will go pretty deep into audi, lexus, bmw and mercedes territory. Hyundai defenitly doesnt belong here.
You guys keep nailing it! Impressive.
Wow you guys really butcher the names
People think my 04' RX8 is a brand new car. Mazda's are timeless. Zoom Zoom all day ❤
I agree. As a former 04 RX8 owner, the design has aged well. And arguably, the 04 era Mazdas interior controls and overall design aesthetic was more interesting than the 19 Mazda 3 everyone seems to love.
Rob G 100% agreed I drive an 04 Mazda 3 and that interior has held up pretty well I wouldn’t say timeless but close for now
@@leonardotorres9388 I totally agree!
The Facelift RX8s are definitely timeless. Idk about the prefacelifted ones like the 03-08... but definitely 09-11s
9:17 ^^
Mazda 3 all the way..
What an incredibly stupid comparison. They should have compared the mazda to the elantra sport with the fully independent suspension and 201hp. Mazda still looks better ( hyundai really dropped the ball with the refresh) but the sport is quicker and more fun to drive. Would have been a better comparison. Also motortrend did find that the torsion beam on the mazda was a step backwards and the ride is now definitely less refined.
mazda looks amazing inside out
I think Hyundai made Elantra younger than Before model.
삼각떼 수출형 Trianglantra
I wish they would just make steering ratios adjustable to the driver's preference, but I guess that may not be feasible at this price point. Great review, love that you mix in some comedy!
They usually offer Sport, Eco and Comfort modes, which affect steering and throttle, on the upper trims, even in compacts now. The Kia Forte also has a "Smart" mode, which responds to your driving style.
9:51 the one that pretends to be Polandball
All of mazda's new refreshes have beautiful shapes. Whoever is doing their body design needs a serious raise. Shit's giving me almost Alfa Romeo vibes.
definitely. Alfa was my first thought when I looked at the new design.
I almost skipped past that intro. I'm glad I didn't. :)
There is no compitition!
Mazda is the best
I have more torque than this car. 😅😂
The new Mazda3 sedan is really gorgeous. However, I like the last gen HB better than the new one.
I agree. The C pillar on the new hatch is laughably wide and it looks hideous
never disappointed on Mazda 3
I am a Hyundai Elantra and Sonata lover, but this new model is lacking the voluptuous line they used to have
I'm literally saving up for the downpayment to get into the sedan version of the Mazda3 as soon as I can.
Mazda interior is on another level
New Elantra looks worse than before!
4:13 But Mazda's SKYACTIV-G engines also operate with Atkinson/Miller cycle in the manner you describe. Hyundai's marketers harp on this point more than Mazda.
MAZDA ZOOM3 OK 👌 😘
Fantastic review guys. Looks like there’ll be a new Mazda3 in my life (here in Australia) some time soon. Release is in April, and, as a bonus, the Aussie spec cars handle even better than American and Euro spec cars, although we probably won’t get AWD as an option. We also get rear air vents, probably a concession to our unbelievably hot summers. Btw, the Elantra restyle looks like it was done by a five year old. What were they thinking?
I get Sedan Skydrive automatic model in few weeks in Belgium.
Lmao! That intro is hilarious! This channel deserves more attention.
Mazda3!!!
nice intro. at first, I thought you were going to do a scene from "The Jerk" (1979), featuring Steve Martin where he is standing on the side of the road trying to hitch a ride.
Only Mazda
The intro though!!!! brilliant!!!!
Elantra looks like a Venom.
