I bought a 2012 Mazda 3. 2.5L engine manual. has everything except nav. leather. I really enjoyed that car and not given me any issues (knock on wood!). I started getting interested in Mazdas . Test drove the CX-9, beautiful car! this one is great also. Mazda is doing great with their line ups and they have really great interiors.
9:39 I actually appreciate that Mazda created minimalistic, nontouch and small screen infotainment. The center of a car should be driving experience and not infotainment. And also there will be less distraction with smaller screen. With Mazda I would just like it a little lower so it does not distract the drivers view and having smaller bezel. And not only that, Mazda supports HD audio files (FLAC) with Bose system so it really shows how much they care about people enjoying driving the car.
I couldn’t agree more. The screens are placed in a way that your eyes travel less distance from the road. It’s a safety thing in essence and driving experience benefit if you think about it. Godspeed

80G on my 3 Premium MT. Only issue is that the factory tires were embarrassingly terrible. Upgrade to Continental DWS or Michelin Pilots ASAP for the best handling experience, significant improvement. Otherwise, this car punches way above its weight in driving enjoyment and overall handling. It’s not a hot hatch at all, yet the 186 hp lays down gives it some nice torque after 2500 RPM. In my mind still one of the nicest looking cars on the road, even after five years with no change
By putting the infotainment screen high up and far back, you don't need to refocus your eyes from the road to glance at it. It's quite nice once you realize it. Also, unlike so many other cars... you *CAN* permanently turn off all or some (your choice) of the safety features.
Jetfowl i would hope that lane departure auto assist would be one of those features you can disable...i live in an area up north where roads are constantly being worked on and lane shifts happen frequently...if that info isn't uploaded to Mazda's database it will steer you into the wrong lane or into a barrier i would think?
@@pex_the_unalivedrunk6785 I have a subaru with the same feature, you can disable it with a button. Even when it is engaged, the turning mechanism can easily be over powered.
I really like this screensize For me is one of the bet integrated ones ive ever sen, size and placement. @dougdemuro you're being boring and with no sense of style mentioning it so often
Yeah don’t take Doug’s opinions as fact. He literally called out Mazda’s touchscreen for doing exactly what it’s supposed to. Not being a touchscreen and being farther away from the driver.
I mean most hatchbacks look like what VW, Honda, or Renault make. But okay. The car with no rear visibility look good cuz egg shape or something, so don't mock it or something
Also, they're Just about THE only NON luxury brand to give you the German style control knob last I checked (i.e. i drive & whatever Merc & Audi have). Not only that but literally across their entire lineup (I believe the bigger nissans have something similar, but most likely NOT available on SL/platinum Rogue/sentras/altimas/etc). Even the subcompact enterprise lot econobox Yaris iA sedans (which is literally just a badge engineered Mazda 2) has the control knob. And I certainly can't be the only person here that'd rather have that knob rather than getting your presumably dirty hands all over the screen and it starts looking disgusting just within the week alone. Granted it IS a pain in the ass to change radio stations unless you're going through the favorites. Especially outta town; Keep forgetting the buttons DON'T "seek" through each station, but rather only the preselected favorites.
Still, if you're going to add Apple and Android, as people have been demanding, and those are touch-activated on your phone, it's counter-intuitive to make you use a controller and watch the screen, to do what one touch will do.
I got the 2019 mazda3 sedan and I love it. Definitely the best non-luxury sedan of this year. Beautiful design on the outside and a simple but classy interior.

Hey Doug, I've noticed in a few videos that you mention the missing pocket on the driver seat is cost cutting. The actual reason for that is not to disturb the driver, especially in family cars, kids tend to put too many stuff in there and yank on that thing for no reason thus moving the seat and bothering the driver, so some automakers decided to completely remove it. That's why its always the one on the driver seat missing
I think both reasons makes sense tbf, but it’s probably more on cost cutting, but the excuse given is so it doesn’t unnecessarily disturb the driver. You can get it after all as an upgrade.
also as the driver its so much harder to use the one on the seat your sitting in. its beyond easier to reach to the rear of the passenger seats. I already dont use those pockets anyways, but if I did I would not even USE the drivers seat one if it was available.

@Some Guy If you're saying you need to "floor it" to reach 140 km/h, then in my opinion that is probably an incorrect statement. In my 2015 Mazda 2 (90hp) (Demio in US?), flooring it is only needed to go above 160 km/h and the top speed I reached was 184 km/h. I've found the amount of torque of the Mazda engines to be very good above 3.000 rpm. Interestingly enough, as I reached 180 km/h or so, the car advised me to shift from 5th to 4th gear, but I didn't really dare as I was afraid I'd go over the rpm limit. :D
Doug, your entire rant between 10:00 and 11:00 is completely solved with the previous track / next track steering wheel button. It goes between channels or favorites, depending on how you have it configured in the settings.
I think this is wrong. I bought a Mazda3 today and the previous/next track steering wheel buttons do the same thing as the wheel - only rewind or fast forward the current channel. There is no option in the settings to change this.
I had 2007 Mazda 3 (European model), sold it in 2015 to a guy I know. It has NO sign of rust. It's amazing that a small independent company with limited resources can make best cars in any segment it competes it.
I think the Soul is so weird and quirky that it looks charming (somewhat, and to some people). The m3 hatchback is too different to its previous design so it just comes out as weird (for now).

Bought that in the hatchback-version just about a week ago. I'll be getting it on monday. It just came out like 3-6 weeks ago. The car is under 28k€ in Germany with all options in except leather interior. It has the newest features and just about everything in tech you can imagine. They allegedly halved the interior noise to the old Mazda 3 and you can feel the quality! It's like sitting in a mercedes but for half the price compared to an A class with similar options and power. I'm changing from an 2014 A3 to this and you can't even compare it. You won't find a car with more features and quality in this price range, they are all way more expensive, when you add all those feature packages that come included in the mazda.

The Select trim has all the safety features I was looking for, including rear cross traffic alert, lane assist, auto cruise control, Apple car play, and more. Other manufacturers force you to purchase more expensive trim levels to get these features. As for the infotainment center, I find the sound system much better than my 2018 toyota, my trade in. I like it without having to touch the screen, which happens to be plenty big enough, because I find it easy to navigate, and it doesn’t get my fingerprints all over it. To avoid having to scroll through all the radio stations, simply create a favorites list, and this will make it much easier to skip to your next station. One last thing. The Mazda3 has a Sport mode, which I really like a lot because it helps me to zip around traffic and it’s also a lot of fun to drive.

The Hold feature is brilliant - it removes a major source of fatigue during city driving. And I love that both-pedals warning! So often I see cars on the freeway with their brake lights constantly on as they cruise with the traffic. 9:45 That’s the point? It’s an intentional design, the screen is not mean’t to be touched & the farther away it is, the easier it is to keep in-view while you drive decreasing distraction. According to Mazda, it is more of a safety concern, so the passenger behind the driver doesn’t distract the driver by trying to reach out for things while on the road.

Honestly yeah. I had a 15 crosstrek and the screen was huge but I really only ever looked at it to turn on the Bluetooth or the camera backing up.
I couldn’t agree more. The screens are placed in a way that your eyes travel less distance from the road. It’s a safety thing in essence and driving experience benefit if you think about it. Godspeed
Bigger screen might be better though for reading faster. That’s probably the only improvement.

The Mazda3 ditched the touch screen for safety purposes. They also pushed the screen way forward to minimize your glance travel from the road.
It's so obvious, how could he not figure that out?
Still, if you're going to add Apple and Android, as people have been demanding, and those are touch-activated on your phone, it's counter-intuitive to make you use a controller and watch the screen, to do what one touch will do.
@@Tarmac76 infotainment should be a comfort feature first. Not done so as to provide safety.

GPS cuts out and loses signal in tunnels. So instead of seeing a “No Signal” alert, you can see a tunnel. Sort of a visual continuity feature I guess.

Nah its cost cutting. Many brands do it. If that makes you feel better to make up a story around it, ok.

Doug - going through radio channels one by one - you use the 'next' and 'previous' arrow buttons on the left steering wheel brace. Also - dim the display brightness by turning the trip-meter push-button.
Skyactiv G is actually pretty simple. It uses a high compression ratio but to avoid knock, it reduces residual gas by shaping the piston differently and optimizing fuel injection to get an even air-fuel mixture
Yeah pretty cool, but Toyota beat them at their own game with their new 4cyl. Still anytime you get more power for less fuel the better.

Mazda really go their own way. Have you ever seen an economy car interior that is remotely in this car's league? The Hold feature is brilliant - it removes a major source of fatigue during city driving. And I love that both-pedals warning! So often I see cars on the freeway with their brake lights constantly on as they cruise with the traffic. That is a giveaway that the driver has their left foot on the brake pedal and is rapidly wearing out their brake linings. This warning gives them the scolding they deserve. Go Mazda!
Even the 1st and 2nd gen interiors are comparable to what you would see in a lexus or acura luxury car, I love mazda!
I think this car is a no brainer for a young dude looking to start a family lol. You could totally get chicks with this car I feel like.
LOL!! I can't stop laughing....Doug thinks the Mazda 3 hatchback looks "kinda weird" but his favorite car is the Kia Soul.....LOL. Love you Doug. Liked your video, as always :)
@Lamingtxn yo but tbh kia soul drives really well. i rented one a few days back thought its gonna be bad, but i am honestly surprised.

Kia Soul is the ugliest thing on the market alongside the Fiat 500x.
Unfortunately, most people are pretty ignorant about Mazdas. They're always geared towards fun driving. "zoom-zoom", is the reason they've used this. As a CX-5 owner
Yesh and Doug lost some credibility when he said that the CX5 drives like other SUVs. Far from the truth.
Your comment reads you were going to say something about being a CX-5 owner
This dash/front interior is oozing with E90 allusions and I love Mazda for realising the perfection of simplicity.
I was just thinking the interior reminds me of my E92.
BMW, Porsche, and Mazda does the “manual shifting” the correct way.
Especially since an actual manual transmission is still an option for the Mazda.
And Alfa Romeo bitch please...

Mazda chose not to go all touchscreen because they're distracting. You just drive
Try using those dials while driving... Way more distracting than a touch screen.

The hatchbook looks for some reason only weird on photos, it looked completely different when I saw it live. And then I bought one :)
Totally agree with you. Pictures dont do the hatchback justice. Mazda shaped the body to leverage reflections and you need to see the car in person to truly experience the effect. Mazdas biggest challenge is perception. This new 3 is the sort of car you cross shop with Audi A3s not Corollas and Civics. But people have bias. I own a 2018 Mazda 6 Signature and test drove MANY cars and for the money it doesnt leave much on the table compared to cars at twice the price.

I totally get what they are trying to do. Modern cars overwhelm you with buttons and features and things to look at. They are bringing back a dash more befitting a classic car though with modern style. But they need better software people designing their infotainment system.
That's not thinking about what the people want. they just made things more complicated and not user friendly.
@@2002altima It's prioritising safety over ergonomics. Less refocus time going between your surroundings and the HUD to the infotainment screen means less time not looking at the road ahead of you. The fact that it is not reachable is a side-effect of this.

9:45 That’s the point?
It’s an intentional design, the screen is not mean’t to be touched & the farther away it is, the easier it is to keep in-view while you drive decreasing distraction.
Also since the screen is further away it dosen’t need to be as big to actually see & read what is there.
So your problem with the screen is subjective, you just personally want a touchscreen & don’t like being limited. Though then again the Dougscore itself is subjective so you can have it.
Drawback is longer distraction
@@jj_cars99 How are you distracted when you never have to take your eyes off the road to interact with it?
You literally don’t know what you’re talking about and won’t even get the opportunity to even test drive a current model year vehicle.
Stop. The. Cap.
@@millennial_weeb2382 Let me explain. Even if the infotainment system is at a far distance, the way you control it is finicky. You're having to navigate to the menus using a dial or touchpad and also you look at the road at the same time. This makes distracting driving even longer than a non-touchscreen one.
Have a Mazda 3. Love not having to look at screen for more than a glance - can’t stand touch screens, but just personal preference.
Also think it’s great how small the screen is - doesn’t take over interior.
Mazda keeps making there cars how they should be. Simple good looking and no CVT. Out of all the cheap compacts this comes 1st imo
And a manual on the highest trim if you want
But why. For the price of new Mazda 3, you can get a slight used Luxury Sport sedan. The value of sport sedans in our crazy SUV loved world is nuts. I paid 31K for a one year old 330i with only 9K miles on it. It has Apple Car play and 250HP from a 2.0 liter. I can put it in sport mode and floor it out a turn and the back gets loose.
