If your main goal is to save on gas when buying an SUV, this is definitely not the one for you. It presents no difference in gas efficiency compared to the previous V6 of competition. What GM did is to make up with the aesthetics inside and outside for you to forget about everything else that matters most these days.
Hats off to Chevy for producing such an awesome vheilce, I think it needs a hybrid system to compete really well against the Grand Highlander. Obviosuly if you need the most amount of space then the Traverse is your winner but the GH provides most of the space with better fuel economy especially in the regular hybrid trim.
Assuming the repair costs of a Traverse (21mpg) and Grand Highlander (34mpg) were identical over the first 150K miles (we all know that is improbable), the fuel cost difference would be staggering. Per AAA today, in KS at $2.68/gallon - Traverse $19,143; Highlander $11,824. If you live in CA at $4.36/gallon - Traverse $31,143; Grand Highlander $19,235. Love your reviews, Alex! When you review a "family" vehicle I might suggest two things: 1.) a quick view/showing of the cargo area with all the seats folded down would be appreciated and, 2.) compare fuel costs in actual dollars. I suspect most people watching your channel regularly understand the difference but the casual shopper searching YT reviews before making a purchase probably does not. Eg. At $3.00/gallon the Traverse would cost $8,194 more in fuel costs and at $6.00/gallon a Traverse would cost a whopping $16,385 *more* than a Grand Highlander over their first $150K miles. Just for gas...
Grand highlander in city is 21 mpg at best and 28 mpg highway so not accurate but still. There's no vehicle this size on regular fuel (not hybrid) that can do 34 mpg.
Alex, I really enjoy your channel and your reviews on the various automobiles. I was wondering if it would be possible to include fuel tank capability and recommend or preferred octane fuel in your reviews For example: The 2024 Z71 2.5l Turbo has a 93 octane rating with a 21.7 gal fuel tank. Our real world mpg is City/Hwy/Combine. The cost per fill up in the state of California would be (21.7*$4.747) $103 Just food for thought.
Feels crazy to pay for all-wheel drive and not have it automatically engage when you lose traction. At least Chevrolet's got the 24" roller bag thing going for them! 😆
I mean, your an auto critic, so your going to hate something lol. 😂 😂 But everyone who’s gotten into it says it’s loud under hard acceleration. But it seems to sell well, so I wonder if GM will add more sound deadening or say screw it, people are buying it?
I'm honestly more disappointed you can't get it as a 5 seater, like the way gmc allowed the first gen Acadia at4 to have a third row delete. Less weight and more storage space means more cargo, something a z71 buyer looking for a z71 would appreciate
I have a fully loaded RS around $61,500 got it’s May 13,2024 Just me and my wife I the only one that rides in it 95% of the time. Love my purchase only have about.3350 miles on it could have got a $110,000 truck put it in sports mode turn on the 10 speaker Bose 4:53 system this 4 cylinder flys and it looks good too.
I ride in sport mode and AWD and turn that stop & start all the I could have got a corvette like most of my friends so I no power in sport mode take the engine and sound to a different level and again the 10 speaker Bose system can’t hear the engine noise and it doesn’t bother me .
Hoping with a couple of years they have been able to iron out some of the engine refinement. Most people are crying about losing the V6 but I definitely won’t mind the extra low end torque.
Hello Alex, Should we also add the number of speakers or music system fidelity as a criteria? I might have missed if you already did. Thanks for a Great Review, Again.
Alex, I hope you get the Buick equivalent, which has active noise cancellation. Hopefully it will be quieter, both engine noise as well as general road noise... Or not?
Funny how you found styling below everything you compared it too while I think the traverse easily has the best look out of all of the competition. I think I'd go for Toyota, why. Reliability.
As for the AWD system, we should all salute to Saab's XWD (the 4th Gen Haldex with torque vectoring). I believe GM uses a modified version of XWD to newer Opel and Chevy FWD based vehicles.
I test drove a Z71 yesterday and noticed that it did not come with 360 cameras as standard. Additionally, the front parking sensors were missing, making it challenging to park in tight garage spaces.
Yeah you have to add the driver confidence package they remove those features for 2025 model $500 option now stupid in my opinion it's standard on the RS and high country option on the other trims
Thank you for being the only review I've watched to mention that about the AWD system... Outside of body on frame and off-roady types with locking diffs, you'd expect a vehicle in this class and amongst its competition to have that "slip and grip" type system that's almost synonymous with modern day crossover type SUVs. Living in an area with unpredictable weather systems, it's nice driving a vehicle that controls the AWD system as just that, AWD. I'm looking to get into a 3 row family mover from a Subaru Forester and this might just be a deal breaker.
I think the Z71 is the sweet spot in the trim line. Personally I'm not a fan of vinyl seats, but GM doesn't care what i want. My build would be Z71, second row bench, no third row, and cloth seats. One can wish. Thanks for the review.
At 6' 10" tall I'm hoping that this new iteration of the GM three row SUV's is set up to be comfortable for me to drive. I've sat in the new Pilot (OK, but not great) and the Grand Highlander (nope) and I'm still looking for something that as or more comfortable than what I'm currently driving (1st gen Pilot). I know I can go really big (F150, etc.), but going really big has it's drawbacks as well. One thing that I'm hoping GM figures out soon is how to make a seat that doesn't feel like poured concrete.
That would have been hard to package. A hybrid with this four would have fit, give better gas mileage, and meant the engine wasn't straining so badly under load.
Engine noise is a deal-killer for some people. I consider the Chevy and GMC both to be exceptionally handsome, and have sat in the GMC version and loved it, but didn't want to waste the salesperson's time with a test drive as I hate four-cylinder harmonics and had heard that these are not well isolated in that regard.
They need a premier or high country trim. Ive actually seen like 5x as many Z71 and RS trims instead of LS or LT trims. In fact ive seen a 2025 Traverse Premier trim once at a grocery store. I assume it was a pre production model or something they are planning to release hopefully for the next model year. The RS trim doesnt feel as luxurious/expensive as it is inside and for 56K or whatever. The old high country trim was quite nice and has a nice premium vibe
I always though for reliability, Traverse has done very well. So not sure the reliability level SB that high. Also love the way they have a button to engage the AWD system.
All I want to know is since the headlamps are part of the infotainment system, is there a manual or back up system if you’re unable to access said infotainment system….
I was going to go from my 23 traverse to the 25 but when I found out it was a 4 cylinder I was completely turn off. Waiting to see if they bring back the 6 cylinder
@@Jonathan-bk3dq I own a vehicle in this size category V6 powered and tow heavy I can’t imagine with how hard the engine works paired with the noise makes towing much of anything a good decision
Older engines almost always wear out sooner, though these days it's actually very uncommon for an engine to wear our before the rest of the car. High-powered fours have been around for a decade and don't seem to have unusual short lifespans. As long as they aren't getting too hot they're fine.
@ um, this has a turbo and turbo engines wear out quicker than naturally aspirated. That’s a well known fact. Plus, it’s never a great idea to put a 4 cylinder in a huge SUV like this. It sounds like it struggling already.
I know Americans love big cars, but fact that this thing is the biggest of its main competitors biggest options, and there's another model thats even larger scares me a bit.
One question on the 4WD Traverse: Does having an on/off switch for the 4WD mean that it could be towed on a car dolly with the rear wheels on the pavement? That kind of thing would be of interest to those that tow a vehicle behind a motorhome.
Yeah that engine noise is not what you think of when you see a big SUV - especially one that has the sharp, squared off design of this one. The Ford Bronco offers multiple engines, a 4 and a 6. The fact that you’re stuck with only the loud 4cyl in the Traverse may be a deal breaker for some, especially when there are so many options in this segment. If the EPA wants us to be more efficient, I say bring in more European models for people to use (like GM’s Vauxhall MPV’s) and leave a proper big, low stressed V8 engine for these big SUV’s. Obviously it’s a pipe dream… but a guy can dream!
The Chevy Traverse impresses with features and affordability. For an environmentally friendly and tech-loaded SUV, explore the innovative Toyota bZ4X for a better drive!
Is that based on anything of substance? And even if somehow that were accurate, 2-3x of only a little amount is still probably only a little bit of money so probably not a big deal either way.
So, GM successfully protects against cannibalizing sales from Tahoe/Yukon due to 4-cylinder whine and sound intrusion. Point for them. I’ll probably choose my 4th Yukon/Tahoe/Suburban for 2026.
The gh hybrid and tx hybrid are way overpriced and worse in most ways. Just suck it up and pay more for fuel. It’ll still be significantly cheaper than getting the hybrids from Toyota
@@amitgupta-rv1sh it’s nothing special. For the torque it has its slow. An MDX type S has the same torque yet it’ll destroy it Even a ford explorer with slightly more torque will obliterate it
For this market I don’t think the noisy 4 cylinder is a big of deal that people make it. Your average consumer doesn’t know or care about that. I’m eyeing the Acadia and cross shopping that and the Telluride.
Sorry, but every single one of us is the average consumer and a lot of us are going to buy something like this despite the engine noise what’s disgusting to me is that Buick has gotten away from its quiet tuning so what is the point of buying one then?
I test drove the Acadia today. Everything was great except for only one thing. And that only one thing was more than enough for me to buy another brand. It was so noisy inside from the engine. I couldn’t speak with my friends while driving. It was that noisy. Just don’t understand why they dropped the fantastic 3.6L V6 while there is no fuel economy improvement. 😢
Because of how it looks on paper. Lower emissions than a V6 and comparable power. Lack of proper sound deadening is probably partly how they were able to get this priced lower than a Grand Highlander. But let's be honest... the 3.6 ate timing chains for breakfast.
The v6 was anything less than fantastic. It revved high but that was about it. No low end anything. It also had the dependability of a high output na Mercedes v6 from 2005
EPA and Alex both say the 4 gets better economy. That's because turbo and engine stop/start systems do well on the EPA tests. It's also smaller and lighter. Turbo in the real world does well if you don't need/use the turbo power very often. The more the turbo power is used, the more fuel it uses and it doesn't take much to equal or even exceed the fuel consumption of a larger engine.
I know you people always wanna argue this, but emissions are not necessarily tied to MPG so wrap your head around that and understand it’s about emissions now
That's how the world is going. When you can get well over 300 hp and abundant torque from a four, a less efficient, more expensive six doesn't make much sense.
Why can't Chevy put in more sound deadening material under the hood? Seems so simple vs people not buying the car because of the noise. The Lincoln Nautilus has a 4 turbo and is significantly more quiet.
Yeah so don't forget to mention electrical issues and torque converter issues ones been replaced on mine and not even 30 days after replacing doing same thing it's gotta go back into shop pretty sure it's same issue
Whoever it is the keeps deciding to use shiny "piano black" interior components has never lived in the real world. STOP IT ALREADY! I'm about to take some fine steel wool and see if I can't even out the appearance with a "brushed" mat finish.
Best large family suv is still a suburban. Given the bigger and heavier and v8 Tahoe gets 20 mpg, if this had a v8 it's reasonable that it would be within 1mpg of this 4 banger
It's peppy and damn quick. It's also an overbuilt engine block. Or at least the 2.7l in the pickup trucks are and this is a derivation of the engine. Only downside is it sounds bad and you hear it quite a bit when driving on adaptive cruise control and the car tries to accelerate. But it's quick 0-60 in 6.5 seconds or so
@ayushmalpeddi2793 I'm less concerned about the 0-60 and more about the reliability of putting a small displacement 4 cylinder in a large 3 row SUV meant for towing and people hauling.
@@RealElectechThese things aren't really meant for towing. They're boxes for families and their stuff. I don't think they're going to be working hard most of the time.
Love your reviews - but seriously do folks NEED such a massive machine ? A wise car salesperson once told me "buy the car that's right for 90% of your needs" you can rent or borrow for the other 10%. I can't even Imagine needing something this big - maybe once a year ? I hate being near one of these monsters on the highway.
GM did a great job with the styling, probably one of the better generational transformations of late..but can't help but notice another ballooning msrp for a car that was pretty cheap with a less complicated drivetrain for americans....maybe being ugly is better for consumer's wallets..
The Buick Enclave, this and its sister models are in need of a hybrid version or at the very least a diesel version with fuel economy and torque to tow. The horrid 4 turbo is an anemic gas guzzler.
"and it won't break the bank starting at $41,995. But more than just being affordable, the Traverse is huge inside".... no, it will break the bank, just maybe not as badly as some other cars in its class. And it is not affordable. Even if you can find that 42k version with no add-ons, you're at 46k after taxes and fees. A 72 month loan at 5% interest gets you a monthly payment of about $750. When did we accept as a society that it is normal and affordable to have a monthly payment of $750 for the base model of a family SUV that likely will need major repairs by the time the loan is paid off?
LT accounts for only 10% of expected sales. The top trims account for the majority of models sold to non-fleet buyers. Also, we don’t always have the choice of which trim we’re testing.
Design 10/10! Engine 0.5/10! GM really had an opportunity here, hopefully next year the higher trims get adequate HP! Shocked you even said it was the “Best Large SUV”…??? No way.
GM almost kicked a field goal, great size, great styling, great price, hit the post with the engine, very noisy and also you can hear it in the car with all the other noise. So close! Bit not quite there yet to dethrone the Asian equivalents. Shame
Why GM doesn't put their turbo V6 3.0L engine in the top trim of Traverse? This I4 sounds terrible and doesn't seem to generate sufficient power although the numbers look good on paper
Doubt there is room for it. Once a company commits to strictly fours for a model, they can shrink the engine bay and reduce the overall length. A V-6 is a much wider engine (which mounted transversely means longer front to back).
Impressive GM. Unfortunately GM has never mastered the 4 cylinder engine unlike Ford, Toyota or (gold standard) Honda. A shame since their V6 and V8s have been largely good. And it’s clearly built to a price point so its junk after 5 years instead of the 10 years you get from the Japanese.

Alex, I really enjoy your channel and your reviews on the various automobiles.
I was wondering if it would be possible to include fuel tank capability and recommend or preferred octane fuel in your reviews
For example:
The 2024 Z71 2.5l Turbo has a 93 octane rating with a 21.7 gal fuel tank. Our real world mpg is City/Hwy/Combine. The cost per fill up in the state of California would be (21.7*$4.747) $103
Just food for thought.
"feels like you're in an ejection seat, going out the window" can't say I know what that feels like 😂
Feels crazy to pay for all-wheel drive and not have it automatically engage when you lose traction. At least Chevrolet's got the 24" roller bag thing going for them! 😆
Any ideas to dampen the engine noise , any aftermarket options?
I mean, your an auto critic, so your going to hate something lol. 😂 😂 But everyone who’s gotten into it says it’s loud under hard acceleration. But it seems to sell well, so I wonder if GM will add more sound deadening or say screw it, people are buying it?
If the engine sound is so bad, they need to make sure the sound dampening is unbelievable
Really annoying that can't get 8 passenger seating in Z71.
The main reason why I had to skip it
I'm honestly more disappointed you can't get it as a 5 seater, like the way gmc allowed the first gen Acadia at4 to have a third row delete.
Sound of engine is not a problem again people
Hoping with a couple of years they have been able to iron out some of the engine refinement. Most people are crying about losing the V6 but I definitely won’t mind the extra low end torque.
Hello Alex,
Should we also add the number of speakers or music system fidelity as a criteria? I might have missed if you already did.
Thanks for a Great Review, Again.
If you‘be been asking for fun trips to car dealer, this Traverse will make sure it will happen as often as it can.
if only chevy did a hybrid. I would seriously consider them.
Alex, I hope you get the Buick equivalent, which has active noise cancellation. Hopefully it will be quieter, both engine noise as well as general road noise... Or not?
The engine noise isn’t any better, road noise is a bit better that’s all
Funny how you found styling below everything you compared it too while I think the traverse easily has the best look out of all of the competition.
Does GM put active sound cancellation in their vehicles still? I thought Buick used to. 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
I think the Z71 is the sweet spot in the trim line. Personally I'm not a fan of vinyl seats, but GM doesn't care what i want. My build would be Z71, second row bench, no third row, and cloth seats. One can wish. Thanks for the review.
You just described rav4 xle 😂
@@danguelph2676 Are you comparing Traverse and RAV4 in interior/cargo space?
At 6' 10" tall I'm hoping that this new iteration of the GM three row SUV's is set up to be comfortable for me to drive. I've sat in the new Pilot (OK, but not great) and the Grand Highlander (nope) and I'm still looking for something that as or more comfortable than what I'm currently driving (1st gen Pilot). I know I can go really big (F150, etc.), but going really big has it's drawbacks as well. One thing that I'm hoping GM figures out soon is how to make a seat that doesn't feel like poured concrete.
I'm tall and would love driver side thigh support extension!
I have the Traverse 2025 and I really dissatisfied and disappointed with the way the engine sounds and the lack of power,,,
It's a very nice SUV from Chevrolet
Gotta have a hybrid option. And for the price, these sb some of the quietest on the road.
Alex is keeping Marshall's in business.
Great design in and out- it felt short on powertrain. They should have kept the v6 and add hybrid drive instead .
That would have been hard to package. A hybrid with this four would have fit, give better gas mileage, and meant the engine wasn't straining so badly under load.
@ Mazda CX90, Lexus Tx 550 h and Toyota grand higlander - all have v6 with hybrid system 🤷
So this is the new Tahoe. Got it ✅
Engine noise is a deal-killer for some people. I consider the Chevy and GMC both to be exceptionally handsome, and have sat in the GMC version and loved it, but didn't want to waste the salesperson's time with a test drive as I hate four-cylinder harmonics and had heard that these are not well isolated in that regard.
I would buy one of these triplets in a heatbeat. . .if they offered a 32+ mpg hybrid powertrain.
Other GM clones dont have a bench seat option. Would be useful to have mentioned that
They need a premier or high country trim.
He said they have a high country trim for 2025
I always though for reliability, Traverse has done very well. So not sure the reliability level SB that high. Also love the way they have a button to engage the AWD system.
I bought one in October and it's already in for transmission problems 🍋
All I want to know is since the headlamps are part of the infotainment system, is there a manual or back up system if you’re unable to access said infotainment system….
I was going to go from my 23 traverse to the 25 but when I found out it was a 4 cylinder I was completely turn off. Waiting to see if they bring back the 6 cylinder
can you please make standard test if 85" TV fits in the cargo ? thanks
I know it's not the same size....but a 75" fits....I have the RS Trim.
85-in should fit with the seats down
Make these crossovers the size of a school bus is what you’re saying to make them practical.
These automakers putting 4 cylinders into big SUV's is a BIG problem. I do not see this working out for longevity. Give me an older vehicle any day.
@@Jonathan-bk3dq I own a vehicle in this size category V6 powered and tow heavy
I can’t imagine with how hard the engine works paired with the noise makes towing much of anything a good decision
Hide.
One question on the 4WD Traverse: Does having an on/off switch for the 4WD mean that it could be towed on a car dolly with the rear wheels on the pavement? That kind of thing would be of interest to those that tow a vehicle behind a motorhome.
I don’t believe so
Yeah that engine noise is not what you think of when you see a big SUV - especially one that has the sharp, squared off design of this one.
For an environmentally friendly and tech-loaded SUV, explore the innovative Toyota bZ4X for a better drive!
bz4x for a better drive!? Seriously!?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It's so strange you have to manually engage AWD. That's a big flaw.
Best reviews in the biz. At 150k miles I would guess this is 2-3X more expensive to maintain (repair) than any Toyonda competitor.
Is that based on anything of substance? And even if somehow that were accurate, 2-3x of only a little amount is still probably only a little bit of money so probably not a big deal either way.
Reputation (granted, subjective) and historic resale value (objective). To clarify, I should have said repair, not maintenance.
Probably so, given GM's record. It won't necessarily be that loud engine, just everything else.
Mechanics love this car 😂
Lol
So, GM successfully protects against cannibalizing sales from Tahoe/Yukon due to 4-cylinder whine and sound intrusion. Point for them. I’ll probably choose my 4th Yukon/Tahoe/Suburban for 2026.
@alex we love this vehicle any idea when will the hybrid on this come out.? Else we will have to go grand highlander route as TX hybrid is too pricey
GM won’t comment. It’s unlikely for the next 18-24 months
The gh hybrid and tx hybrid are way overpriced and worse in most ways. Just suck it up and pay more for fuel. It’ll still be significantly cheaper than getting the hybrids from Toyota
@@AAutoBuyersGuidethanks a ton..!!!
@@naveenthemachinethanks its for the torque that i prefer the hybrid max.
@@amitgupta-rv1sh it’s nothing special. For the torque it has its slow. An MDX type S has the same torque yet it’ll destroy it
Even a ford explorer with slightly more torque will obliterate it
Is Cadillac going to redesign the xt6?
I think they’ll do a great job. Even the current xt6 is competitive still even though Alex would say otherwise
Bring back the 3800 V6…
They are too stupid to do that
You did not mention adaptive cruise control.
Oh you mentioned it in the pricing section.
It’s in the active driver assist section as well
I test drove the Acadia today.
Thank you for the real world feedback. Looks like I’ll stay Tahoe in 2026.
I know you people always wanna argue this, but emissions are not necessarily tied to MPG so wrap your head around that and understand it’s about emissions now
Seems like a big car for a 4 cylinder engine.
I haven’t watched the video yet, but I HAVE been waiting for you to see how that engine stacks up!
That 60K price tag for the RS is INSANE!
Whoever it is the keeps deciding to use shiny "piano black" interior components has never lived in the real world. STOP IT ALREADY! I'm about to take some fine steel wool and see if I can't even out the appearance with a "brushed" mat finish.
Pls review TX 350 premium
I will take double the warranty over double the roller bags, any day of the week.
It’s perfect for me
Best large family suv is still a suburban. Given the bigger and heavier and v8 Tahoe gets 20 mpg, if this had a v8 it's reasonable that it would be within 1mpg of this 4 banger
You had me all the way until you said it came with a turbo 4 cylinder *facepalm*...
But it's quick 0-60 in 6.5 seconds or so
Also the base AWD gives you a 360 deg camera, essential for something this big @ayushmalpeddi2793
Stay home and hide.
In my experience, GM just can't make a comfortable seat.
Price
Too bad the driver seat only scored an 8/10. Best looking suv in the segment, too bad it’s a Chevy! Where’s the hybrid!?
what does Gruff and Gruffness mean?
Gruff usually is used for voices that are rough. In an engine it means the same thing: rough and unrefined.
Why would you buy this over a pilot?
Woah! There is a $98k Tahoe?? LOL
I think so, and they will sell every single one of them and MSRP so get out of your fantasy land
Test the cars that most buy. An LT is fine.
Shame
Poverty tahoe, I like it
Why GM doesn't put their turbo V6 3.0L engine in the top trim of Traverse? This I4 sounds terrible and doesn't seem to generate sufficient power although the numbers look good on paper
Doubt there is room for it. Once a company commits to strictly fours for a model, they can shrink the engine bay and reduce the overall length. A V-6 is a much wider engine (which mounted transversely means longer front to back).
Although GM has used turbo V6s in FWD vehicles in the past, they don't currently have a FWD transmission with 8+ gears that can handle the torque.
