I've been on Filson's..and after looking at the reviews and the pricing, I've come to the conclusion that I will, just like you, be making my own.

I love my Filson double tins, but after realizing I could take a pair of carhartts or dickies and get the same results, for 1/4 of the price, I will be making my own from now on

Just waxed my canvass jacket: 2 parts parafin, 2 parts beeswax, 1 part walnut oil. Paint it on, used a propane torch to melt it in. Love it. Waaaay cheaper than filson and other tinned clothes!

Adding 50% white spirit allows the mixture to saturate the cotton (particularly the seams) without leaving any wax on the surface and needing to heat and scrape it. I am fairly certain that commercially produced clothing is treated this way.
However, until the white spirit dries fully out, the pants are highly flammable and should never be worn. The mixture should never be heated with or near an open flame and the pants should never be allowed to dry inside an enclosed area where flammable gasses could build up and ignite.
I would suggest carrying out the entire process in the garden.
