Get a pair of cut resistant pants and they will last a very long time. The pair I bought, I can literally take a new box cutter blade and slash the pants and nothing. And because they are made out of synthetic fibers (maybe have some fiberglass fibers too?), they dry fast. I will say, they are not the best for winter though, because they are pretty breathable and the material is pretty thermally conductive. You can feel the heat pass right through them.
But, you can wash them, and don't have to wax them.

I am a biologist and have been working in the forest industry in northern BC for a few years. Several years ago I found a pair of Redhead Bone-Dry pants from the ~70s that look nearly identical to these. I waxed them with beeswax and oiled them lightly and wear them in the winter over merino leggings. I work 10-12 hour days, often in knee-deep snow, and down to -30C. If it's any colder usually we find other things that need to get done...
    They are incredible.
I stay warm and they are relatively waterproof, especially when they are just required to shrug off snow. They maintain mobility, while snowpants (or similar) are awful to walk long distances in. Construction workers laugh at me, but foresters are always interested. They tend to wear the old school army surplus wool pants. Personally, I don't like how those clump snow at the hem, but hats off to functional and traditional clothing.
If you are in the outdoors often and need a hard-wearing pant year-round, but especially in the winter, go find a pair of rugged pants with a tightly-woven cotton canvas (this allows it to hold the wax/oil effectively). You won't regret it!

Since he only has 2 pairs, I guess they either first make small tweaks and give him a version with the latest pair's wear taken into account, or a version with last year's pair's wear taken into account.

I love my pair of double tins with the suspenders. Worth every penny. Thanks Cody for reviewing these years ago in an older video. A couple years back, I called Filson and ordered a dog coat. The salesman asked what kind of dog it was for and seemed like he cared. The coat came right away as always and was a good fit. Six months later, we got a Filson card in the mail from that same salesman asking if our German Shepard puppy grew in to the coat ok and hoped all was well! What other company would do that! Anyway folks, I would have liked to get down to Boston from Maine this week to hang out at the meet and greet but have work engagements. Have safe travels and hope you make it out this way again. Cheers

We went on vacation specifically to Seattle so I could visit the flagship store and buy my first tin. Loved the store and the antique decor, especially the chainsaw at the front door. They have a department (of 1 employee when we were there) who’s sole purpose was repurposing old worn out items and giving them a 2nd life either for the existing owner, or for resale, brilliant. It was pretty cool to see what this young guy had created. I can’t believe how worn you get yours in a year, but rest assured I’m sure some part of your pants live on :)

I just wanted to throw in my two cents. I have also worn the same pair of pants for about a year and a half. I have had wear and tear to what Cody has experienced. I also live in the NW and they do the job for just about everything. I personally have no issue wearing them in the summer, but that might just be me. These pants are bulletproof and i would recommend them to anyone who does any work outside and need a pair of pants that keep up. I have done landscaping, pressure washing, hunting, rough framing work, you name it I have done it in these pants and they stand the test. They are expensive and require some maintenance of re-application of wax but well worth it. Thanks so much Cody!

He said he explained some things to them, so they might know he's a logger and what his requirements are (like without the folded-over part on the bottom), so they might have changed the product slightly, to improve the parts which were lacking.

Live in Seattle and wear double tin pants. I work outside around the area washing windows and cleaning out rain gutters on residential homes. So I am outside a lot in cold, wet weather. I never cut mine to lenght, I just cuff them up. The pants will keep shrinking in lenght over time, so I keep all the fabric and make the cuffs smaller as needed. Filson makes single tin pants but they are not cut the same, the legs are tapered like modern pants, but the double tin pant legs are stove pipe all the way down. They are great for bushwacking, repelling water and breaking the cold wind. They turn bushes and thorns, but they are loud, so not the best for sneaking up on game. I wear Filson suspenders because my weighty tool belt and bags will drag them down if I just wear a belt to hold them up. In cold or wet weather my tin pants are the only cotton I wear. Everything else is either wool, rubber, leather, or synthetic.

Try out Iron heart jeans. YOU WILL NEVER GO BACK. You do not miss the price very much between iron heart and filson. It is originally a company from England. However, they have a American store in the North east called "self edge" the filson pants you wear are 15 oz fabric. The standard of iron heart is 21 oz. I have a pair that is made to get stronger the longer you wear them. My pair started out as 21 oz jeans, I have worn them for two years and they are now 23 oz jeans. NO holes or signs of wear, short of discoloration. They also do custom sizing for your person. It is like buying custom boots like nicks just in jean form.

ive had a pair of these for about 3 years that i got from my father, i use them over my coveralls in the winter time when it gets subzero. man are they nice!!

Try a pair from Cactus Outdoor in New Zealand. They WILL last you longer than these. Original Supertrousers are the ones you want. Dreadnaughts are too much unless you’re on a skifield or in the Arctic. Or maybe Canadian winters if you’re outdoors.

Waxed cotton is still widely worn in Britain and Ireland. But it’s more used for jackets rather than trousers. Waxed leggings over normal trousers breathes better and keeps most water out.

I ASSUME that your left knee wears faster than your right knee because you are left-handed and thusly kneel down on your left knee more frequently. I am just spit-balling though. Thank you for the pants walk-through; I had literally just asked that question a half hour ago.

I love the honesty in your videos. Hope Filson stays more true to their roots than Pendleton and Carhartt, who are now making nearly everything offshore.

Some of the best carhartt stuff comes from Honduras surprisingly. Even their made in Mexico stuff is really good. I'd say on par with their home location. All I own is carhartt, Pendleton, and woolrich. Best outdoorsman brands all around imo.

@@pubplays368 what do you wear by Pendleton outdoors ? I have board shirts but I’d be too afraid of tears to take them outdoors (anyway, I’m in San Diego now not the Adirondacks so I don’t really have much of a choice atm). Duluth makes good work clothes too.

Luke Tein I have a pair that are 40 years old. Gave them to my son when I retired. I wore them every year for hunting season and when I was working in the brush.

The process of waxing them is time consuming. Time is money.
      Here's a link about the process: www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/showthread.php?28745-Tin-Cloth-Recipe&highlight=cloth

You're right. No one can afford $200 work pants.
But they can afford to buy one pair of $20 work pants each month as they wear out.

I made a pair of these out of single front carhartts. I thought I would just do this little experiment and see what happened so I looked up what's in the wax treatment and set about making my own. I didn't think they would turn out as well as they did I was very impressed. If I did it again, though, I would still consider filson pants bc I still had to invest a little sum of cash into my homemade pants.

I love Tin pants. Back in 2008 I bought a pair of Cabelas Tin "waterproof Hunting Pants" for bird hunting. They are almost identical to these yours, however the double knee starts mid thigh and goes to the bottom of the boot leg as the reinforced area is to act more as a chap. The bottoms are hemmed in leather. I would used them hard through Oct and Nov hunting and then ice fishing from late Dec - March. An auger blade did catch them once so they have a few gashes and a little wear in the crotch. They got set aside for a year and I found them COVERED in mildew. Lucky for me, soaking in white vinegar for 45 min, a heavy hot wash cycle with bleach and they were almost as good as new. Didnt have any pants wax, but paraffin canning wax ... heating and brushing on and going over with a hair drier made them just like new. Cabelas also has a "lifetime" or had... guarantee on their brand clothing but they no longer make them from what I can see in my store. :(
