In this video I talk about why I bought a RED Dragon Digital Cinema Camera. Is it worth buying a DSMC 1 RED in 2024? I unbox the RED Epic-M with Dragon 6k sensor which was sold as defective. It is by far the cheapest RED camera I could find at the time, so in this video I do my best to fix it up and get it working again. This camera might be a strong alternative to the Black Magic PYXIS. With many people gravitating towards more cine-style mirrorless cameras like the Sony FX3, Sony ZV-E1, Sony FX30, and many consumer cameras like the Fujifilm X-H2s, Fujifilm X-T5, Lumix S5ii being able to shoot 4k 10bit, the filmmaking abilities modern mirrorless cameras have are getting more and more sophisticated. Affordable cinema cameras like the Black Magic Pocket Cinema Cameras or Kinefinity Mavo are also getting better. The RED Komodo is getting more affordable but is still significantly more expensive than the other options from Sony and Blackmagic. The best price-to-performance ratio might actually be an older RED from the DSMC 1 or DSMC 2 generations. With the legendary RED Dragon sensor 6k high frame rate 16bit Redcode Raw, the RED Epic still offers unparalleled performance, especially now that it is in an affordable price range.
