Thanks so much Matt! Your videos have been incredibly helpful!! For the absolute best results would you recommend trying to only ever shoot either at ISO 800 and ISO 3200 and using Aperture and an ND filter to compensate? If so, is it possible to set the Sony a7iv to only switch between those 2 ISO's? Thanks again :)
@@ExploringAlternatives Glad to help! Yes I would stick to those 2 ISOs. There's no way to switch automatically between the 2 of them though. If you want that ability you would need an FX3 or FX30 and use CINE EI Mode.
Love the video thanks for the help. Question. I’ve used premiere for a decade now but peeps are telling me to switch to resolve now especially for motion graphics. Thoughts?
Ive completely stopped over exposing slog 3 and use Phantom Luts, and Ive never been happier with my footage. The dynamic range is nuts. No more blown out skies ❤️
@@kaimultivideo4956 but those are 2 different things. you setup your filming to have a better editing. why would you not over exposed if slog3 requires that to get the highest DR
Along with Zebras, use Gamma Display Assist set to S-Log3, which will allow you to see more or less what your footage will look like after transforming it back into Rec.709, allowing you to judge white balance a lot more easily :) I also recommend setting the toggle for Gamma Display Assist to a custom button, so you can easily toggle it on and off when in video mode.
Thank you Matt for this video! I'm gearing up for my 5th wedding (but first wedding with my new A7IV, so I'm really upping my video game), and this video was so helpful. I would never had known about the custom zebra settings.
Great video as usual sir! By the way, after about 20 years of using premiere I have officially switched to DaVinci Resolve! Editing s-log3 in the colour tab there is incredible and if you haven’t tried it I would highly suggest it. Using a ‘proper’ node setup like WB > exposure > rec709 conversion > creative look is sooooo good!
@@wadelambert I use a simple node setup using the colour space transform “effect” or you can set it up in the colour management settings if you know all the footage was shot the same way

I'm learning everything about my camera from you Sir. And waiting for your videos like menu settings for both Photography and Video Shooting and how to expose properly in SLOG3 with Sony A1 camera. Main thing I wanna know is what is the Base ISO of the Sony A1 or which is the noise free sweet spot for the Sony A1 Camera? Please reply if you can. Thanks..
bro, I just made a video.. can you answer my question about metering... For example, I shot at SLOG 3 and finished metering, if I shoot at a fixed angle, it's ok, it's okay ya. problem.. but for example when moving indoors to outdoors is almost like vlog or character tracking, is it necessary to re-measure? because then the EV will automatically change and no longer +2 as measured ... is there any way to fix it !!! Is it possible to leave the ISO automatically? Really thanks a lot!
Thank you for you intersting video! Just one question. With the Sony A7 IV, is it possible to film with a LUT that applies directly to the video? I ask this because with S-Log 2 or S-Log 3, it is difficult to see what you are recording. Pictures are too dull.
Great tutorial! Bummer that Sony allows to go under 800 ISO for Slog3. I wouldn’t have known if I didn’t watch this video. I am pretty sure a lot of people will get this messed up.
Everything is fine bro but only one problem is we cannot see the focus area and in the bright weather we can't even see the camera display, how can we concentrate more on focus 😊
What would be the best gamma/gamut to shoot a candlelit bedroom night scene with a sony a7c/a7iv? Also any other tips to minimize noise or things to keep in mind?
super tuto, never understood what was slog3 and how to use it. Do you have a basic tuto explaining how to import and proces a slog3 inside adobe premiere, just to see how to proceed (also with your LUT) ? any tuto on cintenone which seems "plug and play" for beginners ? coming from my iphone 12 pro max videos, for family and events videos, in order not to explode my hard disk, which format would you advise to use. I have understood HD is not sharp and H265 is less universal.
Thanks Mat for this great video. However, on my camera, when using the manual mode just like you, when I set the ISO to a specific value (800 for exemple), I lose controle on the exposition (MM), the value change and I cant block it on a specific value. The only way for me to block MM on a specific value is to use "auto ISO" but this not a good alternative either as I want to keep my ISO on 800 . What can I do ?
Hi, if I understand correctly you film in manual mode "M", you have to manually adjust iso and aperture. When there is a sudden change in light during filming, what happens, because you can't change iso or aperture. thanks in advance
Hi Matt thanks for another great video. 2 questions: 1. after following all your instructions, as more and more light is coming into the camera, it looks like the zebra is starting to show way after the +2.0 is blinking. that makes me want to ask, what is the zebra +94 setting good for? if i'm 2 stops over the blinking +2.0 and still no zebra stripes are showing, so what use is there for the zebra +94 setting? the second question is: when i expose +1.7 to +2.0 - the histogram does not show over exposing and also in the camera montior the image looks properly exposed, so with my eye or histogram i do not see any over exposure. so the only over-exposing in this case is from the multi-metering mode that shows that i'm around 1.7-2.0? is that all the "over exposure" that happens?
So I’m on a run and gun shoot and base ISO 800 is a little dark. Do I stick with it and increase exposure in post? Because this way I’m not technically exposing correctly in camera am I? And what if 800 is a little bright even with ND, should I bring ISO down then? The problem as a filmmaker with our settings having to be so rigid it’s hard not to break them 90% the time! And surely ISO is the best thing to sacrifice as we can’t touch shutter and you want usually aperture relatively wide.. Hard to find the right balance!
Hi the same setup is for indoor filming? Or for cooking videos? For zebras ofcourse. I don't need setup C1 standard+range? Only the C2? Best regards from Poland 🇵🇱
Hey Matt! Love your videos!! I have watched several of your videos about SLOG and I would love to know how you overexpose for a reception and exit at a wedding? I have scoured the internet trying to find some help on this and have had no luck. Every time I try to overexpose in SLOG for a low-light situation, it turns out looking terrible and noisy. Would love it if you did a video on reception/lowlight settings for SLOG. Thanks!!
Great videos the best I’ve seen so far about these issues with slog3 and s cine tone… so if we stick to iso 800 or 3200, we can only adjust with the aperture , or use an ND filter, but what about the shutter speed? Do we need to leave it at double the frame rate , or we can use different values ? Thank you !!!
Quick question. My wife and I will both be shooting with a Sony A1 for an upcoming project. I want to try out SLOG 3 for it, but she’s not quite as comfortable with camera settings. If I set her camera to auto ISO and set the M.M. to stay firm at +1.7, do you think the results would still be solid?
Hi there, currently this is my situation, i set up Auto ISO between 800 and 3200, in low light it always go up to 3200 and in day light it goes to 800, i normally never see other values, but i still have to try more, also i can always set to 1.7 I don't know if it's the correct way to do it but it's thee only way that i can overexpose slog 3 every time

Do you have to use a conversion LUT before the applying the phantom luts? About to buy them.

If you need to overexpose all the time how do you set the camera then for doing moody/darker or silhouette shots?
thanks for your tutorial, can I use this preset on a7iii camera?
you mean avoid using in between those iso it means iso 850 - 3100 has visible noise in it ?
Can you explain why do we use it at all and then apply colors later when we can just film in real color
So do you have to stay in the base iso range so if I’m at a concert or event and it’s dark can I push the iso pass 3200 or no ?

How do you get the multi metering to show up on the display? Mine has the exposure comp and I can't find the option to change it.
Hey man, is it important to have Slog3 in PP8 or can I also change the gamma and color mode to Slog3 but in PP2?
