thanks Matt im noob in sony a7iv, and im new in editing. i just buy your luts yesterday. love this, make me easy just use ur luts. greetings from Indonesia...
Honestly I’ve heard most of the info in this video before, but not is such a packaged way, thanks for explaining everything so clearly, I’m not giving up on Slog3 after all :)
Noob videographer here, though I have been a pro photographer for years. I was struggling with my color grading in Sony. White shirts were blue, lips were purple, and skies were too green. It was a mess. Then I tried your simple-to-understand instructions and - boom! - it worked! I look like a quick study videographer, ready to go shoot for clients now. Thank you!
Over the years I have seen many short films giving tips, hints, and instruction. Most have endless intros filled with waffling and information that the viewer should already know. Then the remainder is often convoluted and irrelevant. This is the first time I have seen one that goes straight to the point, maintains the relevance, and clearly explains why certain settings are the best starting point. Genuinely, one of the best videos I have ever seen on TH-cam! Thank you.
Matt this video kicked ass, thanks so much for separating everything into chapters and making this watch a breeze. Shooting my first wedding tomorrow. Thanks again!
I watch a ton of videos on the Sony A7s* cameras but I find that yours are the most immediately useful to me. Without going into too too much technical detail, you get right to the point on what works for you and why. I find this approach often matches my real world use scenarios as well - even though I'm not a wedding filmmaker. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Matt!
Holy moly….you’ve just fixed all the issues I’ve been having with SLOG3 and why I’ve been way too intimidated to use it in a 13 and a half minute video. You’re amazing.
OMG, I was literally snatching my hair out trying to figure out how to expose in SLOG3. This is first, out many, videos that actually made sense. You rock Matt!
Matt, you're single handedly helping a boring old engineer achieve his dream of being a cool filmmaker...thanks for the treasure trove of useful information without all the unnecessary BS.
Matt! Thank you for always diving into the nitty-gritty of the topics! Really appreciate it and you make it so easy to grasp the detailed stuff for us rookie videographers out there. Bless!
just got my a7siii and going through Matt Johnson University!! 4 videos in and am insanely grateful for your knowledge and willingness to share. YOU ROCK
I will be filming my first wedding this month. Your videos really helped me to get better in creating videos and understanding my cameras. So now I am much more relaxed when it comes to Jobs and creative work. Thank you Matt for your hard work. Greets from Germany :-) 🇩🇪
Recently made the switch from Canon to Sony with my purchase of the A7IV. every single question I've ever had about the camera, you've had a video for. keep up the awesome work, fam!
I want to thank you for this excellent tutorial and for giving all of us your camera settings to copy them to our cameras. Pt 1 and Pt 2 of the A7SIII settings plus this How to Expose in SLOG3 video helped me achieve absolutely great results last week. Your settings are really practical and really work, and your tips are to the point. Unless other self-proclaimed gurus (e.g. Mark Galer) your tips actually made me shoot the video with the cinematic look I was looking. Other TH-camrs DON'T give away all their tricks. They are selfish with their "secrets".
I'm a beginner and I use my A7iii mainly for video. This is the first channel that I came across that talked about noisy footage no matter how well the scene is lit or how low the ISO is. This helped a lot, thank you!
I watch couple of videos about the topic earlier today and had still a few questions to truely get it. You explained it amazing! Now I understood all the steps logic. Thank you for that.
Just when I thought I knew it all, I watch another Matt Johnson video and improve haha, thanks again man, even years later your content is saving the day!
Great video Matt. I didn't know about the caveats to lowering the ISO in SLOG3. This could of cost many of us dearly in a future shoot, had you not shared your knowledge.
I shoot in slog3 on my Sony a7iii with no noise and perfectly exposed with no zebras. With one simple trick. Both slog2 and 3 are both meant to stay at iso 800 set shutter for “filmish look” and use aperture to let light in or to darken image.
Matt, your tutorials are one of the best here on YT! I love your way straightforward, the examples you show while you explain and your humor is priceless ♡︎♡︎♡︎♡︎♡︎thanks a million for putting in so much effort into making these tutorials for free here , you are absolutely amazing!! I’m so glad I’ve subscribed to your channel, it’s like a huge library of knowledge easy access.
Matt thank you so much for all of your videos. They've helped me so much in starting my videography business and they're so easy to understand, informative, straightforward, and you are so calming! I really truly appreciate it and hopefully one day I can grow my skills enough to pay it forward and start sharing my knowledge with people who are looking for help.
Your explinations are clear, straight and pretty to watch. That is not the case for many TH-cam 'teachers'-:). One word to add. t's normal that RAW en Log Gamma and so Slog3 has noise in the shadows and is Part of the low data values in the dark Part of it. So you suggest ETTR and that is okay. However with DGO sensors (Canon, Arri) it is not necassary, so it is not with dual gain ISO afaik. There is no noise reductions in camera as it is with Rec709. So Rec709 looks better straitgh out of the camera. There is no post production, color grading needed. So yeh Slog3 has noise and at least one stop overexposing can help you to diminish some noise, agreed.
That low iso information was gold! I have the a7siii and the last thing I heard was there were no effects to the dynamic range, but accidentally clipping highlights would have been terrible. I rarely use low iso, but good to know!
Really appreciate you. A have a new FX3, and without this kind of help, I would be completely lost. Just got your LUTS. Doing a lot of backyard experiments to sort things out. You have helped me a ton!
This was so eye-openingly informative that I subscribed. I have a Sony A7 III but I plan on getting the A7 S III later this year (unless something juicier gets announced). This vid kept me from shooting in S Log for my next project. I just bought a Ninja V and wanted to ramp up the video quality as much as I could. S Log 3 would have been a mistake. Thanks. It is quite coincidental that your vid popped up in my suggested vids. Much coffee will be imbibed as I watch your other vids.
Just a quick update on this topic. I asked a question to Matt because after firmaware update 2.0 and 3.0 PP8 is no more available. The reason is that, to shot in S-LOG now you have to do these steps. 1. Go to menu > Shooting > Image Quality/Rec > Log Shooting Settings > Choose if you want to use Flexible ISO or CINE EI 2. Go to menu > Shooting > Image Quality/Rec > Color Gamut and here you can choose your S-LOG profile
Thanks for this video. It’s quite helpful but I have a few questions. 1. If I’m shooting a low light situation should I just abandon slog and shoot normal? 2. What shooting mode do you use in a run and gun situation with slog3 and what is your primary method of overexposing?
Hi Matt. This is a game changer for us. We have been searching for a long time, like years, trying to figure out how to use s-log. The Multi metre explanation is perfect! We can't wait to get out and try this out. Thank you sooooo much for your simple and informative explainer :) Seriously, the best video on TH-cam!!!
Thank you so much for this video Matt! It's amazing how easily you are able to explain and breakdown these concepts compared with other tutorials that seem to make things more complicated.
So grateful for this. My new A7IV arrived a day before I headed to the beach for 4 days. Sadly, a lot of my footage was shot at ISOs that were too low. Shooting HLG3 on my A7III I was always able to get away with a 2-5 stop variable ND... looks like I'll be ordering something a bit stronger. Thanks Matt, keep up the great work!
Great video! Short, to the point with examples. Highly recommend watching if you are new to SONY A7S III, FX3, FX6 & A1. Thx Matt this video is a game changer for me!
Just the info I was looking for, and could not find anywhere else on youtube or on internet. Spot on for a wedding/event shoot. Thank you Matt, for yet another SAVER tutorial.
@@whoismatt thank you! It's probably a good thing we don't live in the same area or we'd have a lot of confused clients 🤣 Thank you for all you do for the wedding videography community!
😍 Color grade SLOG3 FAST with my presets: whoismatt.com/luts
Does the recommendation not to shoot below ISO 640 (A7S3) apply to other profiles like cine 2? Thanks.
But you cant be greedy for just about 97$?
Great video bro thanks for good explaining
Thank you for this video. I have a Sony a7riii do you think I’m good to shoot slog 3 or should I shoot slog 2?
thanks Matt im noob in sony a7iv, and im new in editing. i just buy your luts yesterday. love this, make me easy just use ur luts. greetings from Indonesia...
Finally!!!!! someone who can explain this and I understand EVERYTHING! thanks mate
Watched again after 7 months of owning a A7iv and it just gets clear and clearer how to shoot in SLOG3 PP8. Thaks Matt!
Honestly I’ve heard most of the info in this video before, but not is such a packaged way, thanks for explaining everything so clearly, I’m not giving up on Slog3 after all :)
same
Finally someone who admits you don’t ‘have’ to use a grey card. Good stuff and spot on, every bit of it. Well done.
Lol if I had to use a gray card I’d be in trouble at a wedding
But need paid LUTs ;D
