That's why Lata Mangeshkar is legend.
One of her greatest quality was described by the great Pt. Kumar Gandharva. Playback singers do not have the added time to get the voice warmed up, the initial aalap, etc. (I know it is the essence and beauty of classical singing and in some ways considered to be very difficult as well). They essentially need to start instantly, get it perfect in sur/taal plus emotion and leave an impact within a span of 3-4 min. Look at how Lata just starts with yeh kahaan. That instant steady high note is perfect at the start and every time it recurs. The other thing he mentioned is how she melds the notes together. You hardly notice any breaks, each sur just moving effortless into the next one. Around the time this song was sung, I would hazard to state that she was not at her absolute best, but still so much greater than everyone else, other than arguably Asha, her sister.

I had the privilege of attending sound engineering workshops of people who have recorded Lata Ji. Little known fact, she has one of the best natural vocal compression technique. Her dry recording was so balanced you just needed to add a little reverb and delay to enhance her legendary voice. She used to breathe facing away from the mic in between song lines since pop filters were not as good as they are today. I was blown away when I heard this!

So for the longest time in the eastern part of the world. If people come to a live show, they're there to *listen* . Not see a grand show or dance routines. They'd go to dance shows for that. But usually if a singer was coming to town, people want to go witness the genius happen in front of them. They want the singer to hit all the notes and this is why you'll see with these shows, a lot of the time people are sitting down. They'll dance for a few songs but then go back to their seat and sit, clap along to the song and listen.

You know Idiots, my Mum use to say, in today's time only 10 out of 100 songs released have a beautiful meaning to them, whereas in yesteryears, during the Golden Era of Bollywood, every song in a bollywood movie had a purpose to justify the premise of the movie, or was related to the situations in the movie. Korbin, her voice has changed. If you listen to more of her music, through the ages, you'll be able to notice. Here, her voice is almost cracking and has a mellow quality. React to "lag ja gale" to see how sharp and clear her voice was in her youth. Shreya's current voice is reminiscent of Lata in her youth but I personally feel like Lata has more versatility. She is undoubtedly the most famous female playback singer of all time in Indian cinema.
This was one of the most beautiful movie/ soundtrack of its era and the songs are very popular even today.
Although this movie had a fantastic premise and great star cast , it bombed at the box office. The reason: our audiences weren’t mature enough for the storyline.
Amitabh and Rekha were having an affair long before this movie and the persistent rumors were beginning to affect his career.
His and Rekha’s role in the movie was too close to real life and made the audience uncomfortable. Laughable today but this was the 80’s and our parents were Boomers😂
They eventually broke up because of course Big B would not have jeopardized his career for Rekha.
This exactly mirrors the affair between SRK and Priyanka. SRK would never have survived he scandal and so Priyanka was slowly edged out of bollywood. ( SRK’s wife is an influential player in the industry).
