Shooting this dance sequence was very difficult for her, but she was very dedicated. In another scene, where she is shown in chains in the dungeons, the director used real iron chains.... She suffered loads of injuries during that shoot too. K. Asif was a perfectionist and used real gold sculptures, real pearls for scenes.... Fake pearls did not make the right sound.... So real pearls we brought and used for a scene, where u can hear the pearls hitting the floor.... The set of this scene was inspired by a real castle in India.... Sheesh Mahal.... Lighting n shooting in this set was a nightmare.... But he did it.... This movie won almost all awards that year except the best movie.... K. Asif was really miffed.... you should definitely watch this movie, it's epic! PLEASE REVIEW THIS MOVIE! Dilip kumar, Madhubala and Prithviraj Kapoor (Ranbir Kapoor's great-grandfather), this is pure gold. And before you watch it, please do some research on how much the director and actors hard worked on this. The director didn't like the bounce of fake pearls at one scene so he postponed the movie to buy real pearls to get that ONE second shot, Prithviraj Kapoor walked on real burning sand to get the feels on a shot right, there is a whole list, make you realize how much efforts they put in this back in the days.
The drawing parallel of the two movies wasn’t very accurate. The woman standing behind the prince wasn’t his wife or consort. She was a handmaiden to his mother who broke the news of the prince and anarkali’s affair to the King.
Regarding the comment about over acting by Rick...It is true there is a particularly emotional acting style. That said, Indians of older generation, when capitalism did not take such strong roots, and they were still largely rural, actually did react this way. There is not holding back of facial expressions, repression of screaming, shouting and hand gestures. I saw it in my grand parents and uncles. Even today in villages, during deaths, people beat their chest violently and cry...a pretty genuine reaction..So, for it's times Mugal-e-Azam's actor's acting, I would say was pretty realistic. And, Prithivi Raj Kapoor would figure in anybody's list of top 10 greatest actors of past and present in Hindi cinema.

Emperor Akbar was played by Prithviraj Kapoor (Ranbir Kapoor's grandfather, the founder of the Kapoor dynasty), crown prince Salim was played by Dilip Kumar who was a superstar and was the first Indian method actor and known for his understated style. (Prince Salim would ascend the throne as Emperor Jahangir, the father of Shah Jahan of Taj Mahal fame.) Madhubala and Dilip Kumar had been in love with each other and weren't allowed to get married because of her father, since she was the sole breadwinner of the family. They had broken up by this film but gave the most poignant and famous performances of their lives. She would later marry Kishore Kumar but died at 32 of a heart ailment. Anarkali was most likely a fictional character but a tragic legend of doomed love that persists to this day. The movie was in black and white but was painstakingly colorized and re-released in 2004 in theaters. Dilip Kumar who didn't attend the original premier attended this one. However, this song was filmed in Technicolor but he couldn't afford to film the entire movie in color. In fact, the set construction and other elements of this one song were so expensive they practically bankrupted the project. K. Asif, the film-maker had only studied until 5th grade and was from a small U.P. town and had trained to be a tailor. While planning and conceptualizing the shooting of his song. David Lean and he had a correspondence going and Lean was very skeptical about the filming...how would the set be lighted with these thousands of mirrors everywhere? Asif managed to overcome all these challenges to the surprise of film-makers worldwide. He only made one other movie...the second one released and completed after his death. I love this classic movie and song! The leading actor, Dilip Kumar, sadly passed away at the age of 98 (RIP). Madhubala is my favourite actress and gave an excellent performance. Dilip is a great actor but his performance was not up to the usual standard which people believed was due to his break up with Madhubala. They had a real life relationship for 9 years. She felt that and gave her best performance. It was like they mirrored it in this movie and must have been difficult to work together. Can tell from Dilip's performance he found it difficult. Interesting Fact: The director of this film K Asif ji was a tailor with no film background. This set was the most expensive set at that time and special cameras were ordered for shooting the scene where glass reflection of her dance is seen. The producer was not ready to spend so much money and thought it was impossible to record glass reflection scene in the camera. But the director K asif ji was adamant and continued to shoot and rest is the history.

This movie is an epic, made after great perseverance and loads n loads of hurdles. Madhubala, the actress is considered to be one of the most beautiful actresses of Indian cinema. She suffered from a congenital heart disease and used to faint while working. Shooting this dance sequence was very difficult for her, but she was very dedicated. In another scene, where she is shown in chains in the dungeons, the director used real iron chains.... She suffered loads of injuries during that shoot too. K. Asif was a perfectionist and used real gold sculptures, real pearls for scenes.... Fake pearls did not make the right sound.... So real pearls we brought and used for a scene, where u can hear the pearls hitting the floor....
The set of this scene was inspired by a real castle in India.... Sheesh Mahal.... Lighting n shooting in this set was a nightmare.... But he did it....
This movie won almost all awards that year except the best movie.... K. Asif was really miffed.... "My movie had the best actor, best actress, best director, best this best that .... etc etc but it is not the best movie".......

And before you watch it, please do some research on how much the director and actors hard worked on this. The director didn't like the bounce of fake pearls at one scene so he postponed the movie to buy real pearls to get that ONE second shot, Prithviraj Kapoor walked on real burning sand to get the feels on a shot right, there is a whole list, make you realize how much efforts they put in this back in the days.

The drawing parallel of the two movies wasn’t very accurate. The woman standing behind the prince wasn’t his wife or consort. She was a handmaiden to his mother who broke the news of the prince and anarkali’s affair to the King.

Regarding the comment about over acting by Rick...It is true there is a particularly emotional acting style. That said, Indians of older generation, when capitalism did not take such strong roots, and they were still largely rural, actually did react this way. There is not holding back of facial expressions, repression of screaming, shouting and hand gestures. I saw it in my grand parents and uncles. Even today in villages, during deaths, people beat their chest violently and cry...a pretty genuine reaction..So, for it's times Mugal-e-Azam's actor's acting, I would say was pretty realistic. And, Prithivi Raj Kapoor would figure in anybody's list of top 10 greatest actors of past and present in Hindi cinema.

Emperor Akbar was played by Prithviraj Kapoor (Ranbir Kapoor's grandfather, the founder of the Kapoor dynasty), crown prince Salim was played by Dilip Kumar who was a superstar and was the first Indian method actor and known for his understated style. (Prince Salim would ascend the throne as Emperor Jahangir, the father of Shah Jahan of Taj Mahal fame.) Madhubala and Dilip Kumar had been in love with each other and weren't allowed to get married because of her father, since she was the sole breadwinner of the family. They had broken up by this film but gave the most poignant and famous performances of their lives. She would later marry Kishore Kumar but died at 32 of a heart ailment. Anarkali was most likely a fictional character but a tragic legend of doomed love that persists to this day. The movie was in black and white but was painstakingly colorized and re-released in 2004 in theaters. Dilip Kumar who didn't attend the original premier attended this one. However, this song was filmed in Technicolor but he couldn't afford to film the entire movie in color. In fact, the set construction and other elements of this one song were so expensive they practically bankrupted the project. K. Asif, the film-maker had only studied until 5th grade and was from a small U.P. town and had trained to be a tailor. While planning and conceptualizing the shooting of his song. David Lean and he had a correspondence going and Lean was very skeptical about the filming...how would the set be lighted with these thousands of mirrors everywhere? Asif managed to overcome all these challenges to the surprise of film-makers worldwide. He only made one other movie...the second one released and completed after his death. It was as if he was born to make this film.

I love this classic movie and song! The leading actor, Dilip Kumar, sadly passed away at the age of 98 (RIP). Madhubala is my favourite actress and gave an excellent performance. Dilip is a great actor but his performance was not up to the usual standard which people believed was due to his break up with Madhubala. They had a real life relationship for 9 years. She felt that and gave her best performance. It was like they mirrored it in this movie and must have been difficult to work together. Can tell from Dilip's performance he found it difficult. Ok, enough rambling. Great video and loved your reactions. Classic Bollywood is the best.👍
