    Most people only know method 1 and 2, wheras method 3 is probably the most important. If you can get the carcass to temp using your brake and rim temperature, it will maintain heat in your tyres for a longer period of time. Shows Hamilton's experience as a combination of all 3 is what you want. In slower/non-aero dependant cars, a combination of method 1 and 3 is what you want as weaving alone won't get enough long term temperature into the tyre - especially if you're about to pull up to your grid slot and hold for 20ish seconds. Great video, well explained.

    • @yelistener
      @yelistener  ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Yeah, some drivers don't even have the surface temps on the steering wheel dash. Just have the carcass temps on. Maybe that's worth making a vid about lol.

    Braking is the best tire heater, it also heats the surface but the key is to heat the inner core. A bumpy track also helps to heat the core btw. So does lower pressure because the more the core moves, the more heat.

    Heating from brakes comes more from load transfer, rather than solely relying on heat transfer from the discs.
    Remember, F1 cars pull more peak G under braking than cornering. The more weight/force you apply to a tyre, the warmer it’ll get.
    This is why Kimi Raikkonen didn’t weave much

    weaving does very little with these tires - it's mostly a way to feel the grip as the tires heat up, and drivers use weavings as a tool/method to monitor the tire responding to temps rising

  • @jordadthinks

    With the first method he also intentionally gets understeer/push to help with the heating of the tyres. I think Kimi notably used to do this with the Ferrari at times where he would aggressive push through the front tyres to generate heat more so than other drivers.

  • @squeakybunny2776
    @squeakybunny2776 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The thermal camera makes me wonder how needed active Tyre warm up is at all.
    If you look at the images from weaving, yes the tires warm up but they also cool down quickly. They will stay far above air temperature, that's not what I mean.
    It looks like just driving around gives a solid equilibrium temperature and weaving seems to only very temporarily give extra heat.
    Especially doing this weaving all throughout a SC period instead of just on the last lap seems pretty pointless looking at this footage.
    Kimi is known for not weaving at all while the others around them are going back and forth as if they are trying to set those tires on fire.
    Maybe it's all for pretty much nothing

    The MGU-K braking still will add some heat to the rears as they still need to grip the surface to slow the car down, whether the drive shaft is retarding the rotation or the brakes.
    Radiative reheating from the break disks will not contribute, so less effect than front breaking, but still not *nothing*.

      If I'm right (and I'm not sure) the heat from the rear brakes is used to generate electricity for the battery.

    • @mtlfpv
      @mtlfpv ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't take away rear braking, it actually assists the rear disc brakes by doing a lot of the braking itself while harvesting energy. That's why they run such tiny rear brake discs on these hybrid f1 cars.

  • @AnthraxVX
    @AnthraxVX ปีที่แล้ว

    breaking isnt heating the tires from the friction between the caliper and the pad, its from the direct friction of the tire's surface with the track, the heat from the dissipated pad/caliper friction is negligible and is not the primary source of heating the tire during breaking.

  • @fragdude
    @fragdude ปีที่แล้ว

    I would go as far as to say “step 3” would be more about heating the rear tires with the blips of acceleration.
    Personally never heard of using heat from the brakes to warm the tires, it would be too ineffective… the friction needed to slow the car down would be doing the real tire heating & mgu-k regen could be controlled via steering wheel.
    In fact… that could also be him trying to put power into the battery not heating the tires.

    • @ailurusfulgens1849
      @ailurusfulgens1849 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah, heating from breaking is very real, helps warming up the core and keeping up to temp. But then again it's a given, the rims are doomed to heat up, even more so with the 2022 wheel cover limiting airflow through the rim.

  • @KanedaNLD
    @KanedaNLD ปีที่แล้ว

    Methode 3 isn't what you is not what you described.
    The friction of the rubber on the asphalt heats the tires through braking.
    Not the brake discs!
    The brake discs and rims are designed to give off heat to the ambient air as quickly as possible.
    And not to transfer it to the rubber of the tire.
