It's not reliable to intentionally take out someone in a aero dependent open-wheeler. Racing drivers have a tendency to "ride out mistakes" because they cling on to the hope that the mistake resolves itself. Unfortunately doing that just leads to more mistakes, like understeering into another car. Stewarts are usually a lot more lenient when it comes to T1 incidents so they probably were debating on how and when to penalize Leclerc and the fact that they did so only at the end of the race doesn't mean that they weren't planning to. Although F1 race control has proven ass more often than not, so I won't bet any money on that. Unfortunately you can't prevent the injustice of the driver responsible for a crash being able to finish unimpaired while their victim is forced to retire. It's just a part of motorsports. About the damage; ultimately Leclerc only does what his race engineer tells him to do. If Ferrari tells him to pit, he will. If they tell him to stay out, he will. There also is only a limited amount of information Leclerc has on the extend of his damage. He can ask his pitbox "What's/How's the damage", to which they'll respond with "Endplate damage". That can mean that there is no more endplate, or it's hanging on by a thread. What he can see, and obviously acknowledged is his wing mirror. As a racer, I would be frustrated having to pit and drop out of contention, only for the only feasible repair being someone yanking off my wing mirror. Imo instead of holding it, I would probably have tried to rip it off myself. But the leverage probably wasn't there considering the seating position. I agree there should've probably been a meatball flag thrown. However I don't think that piece of carbon fiber threatened Hamilton's life. When drivers are killed or injured by debris it's usually small dense metal parts or wheels. I'd of course not want to risk it.
Leclerc did lose his mirror. So that car was definitely NOT up to FIA technical regulations after lap 8. And bits were flying off that car as well, so it definitely wasn't safe either, as we saw with Hamilton's POV. So that car definitely should've gotten disqualified.
15s for intentionally driving without a mirror and front wing endplate seems way to low imo, especially considering how dangerously the debris came off the car.
Here causing a collison cost Leclerc 5 seconds. But Alonso got 20 for Russels incident in Australia 2024. Too many times the brits always benefit from the stewards.
Leclerc was holding his left mirror, his endplate broke off Lewis' right mirror and then Leclerc's mirror flew off it was not a good day for mirrors - specifically Charles' - apparently
That title is simply wrong. He didn't almost k'll anyone. K'lling someone is an active act and he didn't do anything actively there for the part of his car to break off and hit Hamilton.
If anyone is having any doubts about that endplate...A composite piece of carbon fiber cured with an epoxy resin and maybe some aramids mixed in there....Carbon fiber shards are already bad enough to cut yourself and can puncture skin....Add momentum from a car going 300 km/h and it could have been a bad enough hit, especially if it hit the visor part.
Shouldn’t have gotten a penalty for that start collision. But the 10s penalty for driving the car in that condition is insane. Should’ve been disqualified from the race
The way it played out with Ferrari playing Masi like a fool and endangering everybody else only to get a 25.000 dollar fine is disgusting. No DNF, no race bans, no points deduction, nothing.
Bottas got a lightning start because he reacted to seb moving forward, it just so happened that he was lucky enough that when he started moving the lights went went out.
This incident is what I always think about whenever people complain about the FIA bringing out a black and orange flag for a loose endplate. It has so much potential really end very poorly.
Nah, that piece of carbon fiber didn't have enough weight to "kill" a driver with the current safety gear. BUT, did you see Bottas race start? That was perfection. I had to replay the video 10 times. Amazing!
@0:40 there is also something razor sharp flying towards Hamilton and maybe there was a car behind Hamilton, too. It is striking that in the last 2 years, almost nobody was called into the pit by the stewards for a damaged car except Magnussen.

2:22 - turning at such speed using only one hand is fucking heroic
15s for intentionally driving without a mirror and front wing endplate seems way to low imo, especially considering how dangerously the debris came off the car.
Wait so thats how Bottas got that superb launch. He saw Vettel jump the start and just so happened to go right as the lights went out!
Here causing a collison cost Leclerc 5 seconds. But Alonso got 20 for Russels incident in Australia 2024. Too many times the brits always benefit from the stewards.
@@Yes-vh7lm Yes, and the example I gave shows the Brit Russel making the Spanish Alonso getting a worse penalty.
This year Ferrari had that monster engine (that turns out to be ilegal).
2:31 Bro that looks like a knife how it cutted Hamiltons mirror💀💀
I don't watch F1 videos very often. But when I do it looks like a video game lobby.
Almost killed is a bit exaggerated, my god, guy has a halo and a professinal helmet, would have been a headache at most.
True. Massa survived a literal heavy metal spring right to the head. And helmets were way worse back then as well! But that was still not safe per se.
Leclerc was holding his left mirror, his endplate broke off Lewis' right mirror and then Leclerc's mirror flew off
it was not a good day for mirrors - specifically Charles' - apparently
This is why they need windshields. They can still be open on top just to make it easier to get out.
Bottas reacting to Vettel's jump start and getting the start of a lifetime lmao
is ur name "yelistener" as in kanye west listener?
That's funny. I've never realized his name is probably ye-listener. In my head I always pronounced yeli-steener. It never made sense 😄
yeah i always saw it as a european name until i just had that realisation@@TwiceEvery14Days
@@TwiceEvery14Days I assumed it was ye listener and just hoped it wasn't. . .because kanye is a toilet of a human.
How did hamilton dodge that at 300 kph
Superhuman reaction times I guess
Shouldn’t have gotten a penalty for that start collision. But the 10s penalty for driving the car in that condition is insane. Should’ve been disqualified from the race
Should've been black & orange flag at the first place
The way it played out with Ferrari playing Masi like a fool and endangering everybody else only to get a 25.000 dollar fine is disgusting. No DNF, no race bans, no points deduction, nothing.
bro was repairing his mirror with 300+ KM/hour
That debris can never kill on impact, however it's dangerous.
That endplate weighs a few grams. It's not going to kill someone wearing a helmet even at 300K/h
Title should really be the FIA almost killed Hamilton by not waving the black and orange flags ever (unless you're Haas)
An overkill title like that will definitely trigger all their fanbases…🍿
It really is bordering on clickbait. . .
Not really, that was really dangerous
@@paolopiocampagnuolo4017no it wasn’t, it was normal debris, this happens each race
@@RedlingsteinIt literally took off his mirror cuz it was such a big piece. That would’ve 100% killed or atleast ended Hamiltons career.
Leclerc is so bad lmao
How the fuck did he dodge that
Just as all other drivers so in F1, they are trained for it
2:23 I have never seen someone steering in at more than 300 km/h with one hand. I do wonder how Kubica manages all this.
Holding the mirror doing 300kph through the turn flat out lol.
Instead of "almost killed", that title should say the debris "almost hit" Hamilton.
Did you not notice the halo?
Bottas got a lightning start because he reacted to seb moving forward, it just so happened that he was lucky enough that when he started moving the lights went went out.
the dirty air of the past was insane wow
That really was incredible reaction time by Lewis.
Think how wired Lewis must be to react that quickly to the debris
I remember staying up til 3:00 AM to watch this one live. I'll probably do the same this weekend.
My man becoming the next Alphamaxnova1, I will be watching your career with great interest
Helmet safety is a lot better since Massa's incident so I seriously doubt a piece of endplate would kill anyone.
His team should have called him in as well as the officials. Are they not watching the race also?
This incident is what I always think about whenever people complain about the FIA bringing out a black and orange flag for a loose endplate. It has so much potential really end very poorly.
Nah, that piece of carbon fiber didn't have enough weight to "kill" a driver with the current safety gear. BUT, did you see Bottas race start? That was perfection. I had to replay the video 10 times. Amazing!
5s penalty for hitting someone,
Alonso: doesn't even hit George Russe.
Steward: 20 second penalty poor track design is your fault 🗿🗿
doing 130R single hand😮
Damn, The Hamilton and Leclerc moment was similar to Barrichello and Massa 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix.
The fact that Lewis could even react to the debris at that speed is crazy
great analysis as always mate
If I don't have mirrors, no one will
@0:40 there is also something razor sharp flying towards Hamilton and maybe there was a car behind Hamilton, too. It is striking that in the last 2 years, almost nobody was called into the pit by the stewards for a damaged car except Magnussen.
Killed is not the word you would use. More like injured Hamilton or just a race retirement. Killed is more like Verstappen in Silverstone 2021
