Mercedes reliability advantage in late turbo hybrid era meant their overtake mode's were much more free to extract power from them. to the point Fia targeted them directly. Now engine must be tuned to race spec. only battery boost is allowed
Overtake mode is battery boost. The reason overtake mode isn't used as often is because it drains the battery much more quickly. In qualifying, the deployment the electrical boost (both MGU-H and K) is pre-mapped to deliver boost in certain section of the track. This is done to ensure battery last the entire lap. Overtake mode drains it in like, half a lap or less at full power, which is useless in qualifying. What you're thinking of is fuel trim. And that's called engine modes. Engine modes/fuel trim and still be changed during a race in case oddities in the engine sensors are detected but it should not increase power, merely change driveability.

As always, a great analysis! But I hate the way the whole power unit works - F1 should be about using (almost) full power all the time, but those days are sadly gone 😢
But for season 2021 Mercedes had taken several times of 10 grid penalty for changing the internal combustion engine. I believe it was to allow Hamilton for running at near full power from after the summer break (was it Spa?) until Abu Dhabi.
Since 2022 season the party modes and overtake modes, ala merc 2021 interlagos monster is gone. They have to stick with a power mode on the icu. If it is for a whole weekend or they have some leaniency and need to keep that mode for a certain majority. The electric motors they have full control over which mode and power in the race but it is not as powerful as icu+ electrics in a overtake party mode. And less engines total also limits the use of party mode
@@Infigo96 yes, that's right with the ICE settings; the problem is the battery in general - it will never have enough capacity to give full power all the race and the energy will always have to be managed :( and there is also the matter of tyres. Valtteris overtake on eau rouge was already cool, but that he also has to think of this is next level. That's not an easy place to pass, let alone when you need to think about your exit speed and speed into kemmel.
If Bottas was smart, it would have been him who had slipstream on that straight. He could just kept behind and then get past again instead of "abusing" his engine for literally no need.
Not quite, this button was working in a different manner in 2021. In 2021 what you saw was merc desperately finding the best engine they might have produced (remember that these are hand built, power differs from engine to engine). They have found the highest horsepower engine they could produce, ran it to it's limits because it only needed to run 3 races, then BAM, cheat mode activated for the Brasil race 😂😂
So it's an rpm limiter? Still remember what Vettel said about the Renault engine that year, with other engines, you push the button, you get more power, with the Renault engine, you push the button, the engine shuts off.
@@Rose_Butterfly98 i don't think rev count as much as higher fuel usage and mapping of the engine and more power from the elecrtic engine. it was like that even before. active suspencion ban. ground effect ban. both before 99. it is with ban that you get teams extract evrithing from what remains
Still happens, though engine modes were kinda banned a couple years ago. The Overtake button now only uses battery power. Still, F1 engines only last a few races before they need to be replaced. Before the V6s, it was more common to see engines blow up mid race. You might occasionally see a frontrunner driver who had a bad start to the race retire the car even if they can still continue, just to avoid wearing the car's parts out for no points.
since they introduced a limit on how many engine can get used in a year there is saving engines. before you burn one for the qualy and another one for the race
@@Jared_Barnesovertake does not always stay on. bottas didnt manually turn overtake off during his battle with hartley. when he had to brake going up eau rouge the overtake was automatically turned off.
So there is an obvious and easy fix, these cars are basically mobile computers, should be easy to program a certain amount of times both DRS and speed boost can be used in 1 race and also have the GPS in the cars regulate when and where these features can even be used. Or even easier and more fun to watch is get rid of all that crap and let the cars and drivers fully race again.
Pretty sure most PTP (push to pass) buttons in various race cars are hold buttons instead of toggle buttons. This ensures that the driver doesn't "misclick" and accidentally keep the ERS on full deploy. Race cars that have a PTP system usually have it on an ERS (hybrid) system - it controls the electrical output of the ERS system, it doesn't boost the ICE power as the poster claims.
Each team has its own OT button setup, so it differs by car. At least for McLaren, a single press will override the energy harvesting settings of the hybrid system, while a longer press will deploy energy and increase speed.
