Keep in mind that RBR never pushed their engines hard during 2022. Ferrari did during the first half of the season and they were still slower. RB were super fast on the straights while being extremely kind on its tyres.As a whole package the RBR was just unbeatable. That car was a masterpiece. Top speed is not everything.Teams have to find the best compromise between downforce and top speed.
Baku doesn't have a balance, at least from my perspective. The straights (plural) are obscenely long, and the corners in the middle that would have seen downforce oriented setups reign supreme are either: a) too gentle to slow down the top speed cars, b) too slow for wing setup differences to matter, or c) so tight you'd need to start the race with half a car to squeeze in. (I'm not an expert. I just know a few things about motorsports from my time playing "pretend racecar driver" on the internet.)
Not aero efficiency. The suspension geometry is the trick. There car has a clever mechanical suspension which allows them to run lower without porposing that's why the Red bull has the most amount of sparks

I honestly thought that with a bit more time they'd sort the crappy reliability out; I was convinced that Alonso had lost out on a decent seat after the dust from the Piastri contract saga had settled, since he jumped that ship before the matter got resolved. Turns out his move to Aston Martin was an inspired one.
Yeah, I second that. People say that McLaren lost 4th to Alpine because of DR, but I disagree. The McLaren was quite slow by the end of the season and in the races I always saw the Alpines having a pace advantage over the McLarens.

I'm not so sure if the top speed on the straights during qualifying is a good indicator for how slippery the rear wing is, since all those top speeds were achieved with the rear wing open in a DRS zone.

Should be way better this year.Merc is not RB level quick on the straights but it is actually one of the quicker cars on the straights. They just don't seem to gain much when the DRS gets actuated.
Their biggest issue in 2022 was aerodynamic drag, especially from the wings because they had to neuter the floor to stop the porpoising. This year they are not bad on the straights but they lack downforce, which is an even worse problem. And this stems from how difficult the setup window is for this car concept. At certain tracks they have to run very aggressive wing camber to be somewhat competitive in the corners, but at the cost of top speed. Then if they trim the wings they have a competitive top speed but they suck ass in the corners.
That would be why they seek the right "balance" in the car. It isn't about top speed only, or cornering speed only. It is about the balance between the two, to minimize the overall lap time.
Every single car is too fast for Hamilton, unless he is ahead of them. If you took him seriously you would think that he drives the worst car in the field, and that it has no tires.

Such a big difference cannot just be related to the setup though. The 2022 Ferrari was very draggy but it still reached 330 km/h without toe or DRS. Mercedes had a pure power deficit. And that deficit still persists today as it's believed that Mercedes has around 15-20 hp less than Ferrari and Honda.
If they had a power deficit they would have horrible acceleration off the line, but they don't, even though their 2022-23 cars are heavier relative to the competition. Their problems lie in their car's aerodynamics, not their PU, which is probably still the best on the grid.
