You're not crazy! I literally fell asleep playing this right after I got to World 5 and never touched it again. On the surface, Wonder should be a home run, but the further I got the more it felt performative and sterilized, lacking much of the intangible, freewheeling playfulness you find in other Mario titles like SMW, SM64, and Odyssey. It controls massively better than other NSMB games, it's insanely polished, and the badge system is great, but there's just missing something for me. It's the same hollow feeling I get from recent Kirby games, too. And thank you for mentioning Tropical Freeze because that gem remains the gold standard for a masterful modern 2D platformer that actually feels well-worth its asking price!
I could NOT agree with you more on this!!! I wanted so much MORE from this game :( I love Mario and just wish there was more soul and story to this NEW game!
Dear Mr. Wimp, fanboy writing (Wimp-fanboy, to be clear). I knew it … I KNEW IT! This mic stand couldn’t stand (höhö) the pressure being the sidekick of a man like you. I knew it! Besides that: I totally missed that one. The moment I saw the video title I thought to myself that mistakes have been made (and hopefully he got rid of this mic stand …). But okay. And then i remembered that I myself had a fair amount of fun with this title. Only … I forgot about it. This review is one of the … not best, but … I am not sure how to say it. I think you brought to life (and words) what kept me being underwhelmed by this game. Certainly not a bad one … but surely none of the really good ones either. That said: Great review. It pushed lots of buttons and had a lot of aha-moments. Thanks! (And thanks for getting rid if the mic stand and … don’t you be afraid, I can keep a secret about this sexy elephant thingy 😏)
Thanks as always for the support, and yup mic stand was just cramping my style - I’m posting a vid later today of me recording the music for the ep, hope you enjoy 😊
Mario games have been unbearably boring for decades now. I think it's because they polish all the challenge out of the game. Early Mario games were somewhat brutal, and that went a long way to making them feel both rewarding and substantial - even without a dozen playable characters.
I came here to the comments to basically say the same thing. I get bored so quickly with Mario games, probably since I feel like I’ve played them all a million times before. I know im in the minority here, but I’ve never been a fan of Zelda or Metroid either. I don’t plan on buying the next Switch. Anyone of my gamer friends I bring this up to act like I’m crazy, like Nintendo is impervious to criticism. I’m being honest here too, not just trying to get a rise out of people on the internet. To each their own.
I was wondering why I haven’t played it much. Love your take on it. Even edge magazine I think gave it an 8 or 9. But they rarely hand out any 10’s. But I think they also gave it a bit of a work over too
Yeah it's not that I think it's a bad game, the gameplay is pretty excellent - I just think it's missing something to keep you coming back. Some unlock able characters would have been a good place to start I think, just some kind of satisfying progression

You’ve basically articulated my thoughts on the game better than I did in the video 😆

Great review, as always!
Thank you, much appreciated 😊
You are not wrong! I was originally excited after all the hype, but after playing it, I couldn’t have been more bored.

Oh. and … man, I love the piano version of the main theme in the background!

Thats why Super Mario Maker on the Wii U was one of the best Mario games ever made.

I enjoyed Wonder. The best Mario game on the Switch is Odyssey and i hope we get a sequel
Yeah I definitely enjoyed the gameplay, just felt like it was missing something for me. Totally agree on Odyssey, love that game

I enjoyed it but I eventually got kinda bored. I think it was just too easy overall and I lost interest because of how easy it was
