@@Gatorade69 I liked the ones that were arcade ports (Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, Road Avenger, Mad Dog Mccree 1 and 2.), but sherlock holmes and the dracula ones are guilty pleasures of mine. The number of them are kind of over-stated it still had a lot more titles that were real actual games.

Love me some nostalgic SEGA graphics; your content and insight is always top notch and 'nail on head' relevant, always speaks retro/arcade/console truth and no other channel covers that type of content better than The Lord X, excellent history breakdown and always a valued opinion on the subject matter
I think add-ons weren't popular simply because the consumer saw 2 seperate purchase's even if they had the main console already, just to complicated for the masses.
Two great videos here, SLX! I never had the chance to play these games back in the day. Can't remember a single store that carried the system, it was hard enough finding games for my Mega Drive. I can only imagine the impact a game like Silpheed must have made on kids back then. Surely I would have been over the moon.
Vay was an awesome old school RPG I played through in 94 when I was 14.I never got the chance to play the lunar games on Sega CD so Vay is the first RPG I think of when someone mentions the few Sega CD games that were worth playing.
I remember picking up the sega cd at Software Etc in the mall. But first I got a slice of pizza there, bought a gaming magazine at the mall bookstore, played some games at the arcade all in the mall! Miss those times!
For the Spiderman vs the Kingpin, I was expecting, at that time, that SegaCD would receive the arcade gaming, with the impressive zoom/sprite-scaling. But again, just the Genesis version with improvements.
I think this is the first time I've seen someone mention Vay in a general retrospective video like this. It was actually somewhat surreal for me to see it acknowledged in a video that I didn't look up that is specifically about it! Great vid!
Awesome Video, I am now interested in the library. Heads up everyone, make sure you can use dithering with your console. It will make those FMV games look a whole lot better with color blending.
Love the videos. The great thing about watching these videos is that you give us some great recommendations. Android Assault is one I really want to play but there is no PAL version so I need the US bios to run the game and I hate relying on my EverDrive for that. Thank you Sega Lord X for the content.
Great video as always, but I’m surprised you didn’t mention Cobra Command. It’s an excellent FMV laserdisc conversion game made by the legendary Yoshihisa Kishimoto and many of the same developers as Road Avenger/Road Blaster.
Popful Mail 😍 Despite the title, you really saved the best for last. And you took my comment into consideration! Your content is always amazing, and honestly, I couldn't agree more with your sentiments. I remember when I first heard about the Sega CD through the Sonic Gems collection and I thought it was the coolest thing. I still do! lol
I wish the sega cd had been more affordable. The few times I ever saw it, sticker shock just kept me away. Then I just moved on to the 32x then ps1. You show a lot of cool [now expensive] segacd games that I wish I had played back in the day. Thanks for the great video!
Ah3 is awesome! Sega cd is super underrated, although they could of done more with the hardware as well as the software. Nhl 94 not getting regular updates like the genesis version hurts my soul tho!
Great video Sega Lord. Watching your channel has helped me love Sega even more than I already did and these great Sega CD videos has even convinced me to get a CD Model 1 recently. Keep up the awesome content!
Love the combination of personal opinion with legitimate knowledge and a journalistic mindset in these vids. This channel is such a goldmine for those of us who never had these consoles growing up and are exploring them for the first time
I had Rage in a Cage for Sega CD as a kid but we could never play it as I never had a Sega CD.. or a Genesis. The 90's were a different time and I think it was purchased by my cousins who thought it would've worked on a PC. They liked pro wrestling back when I didn't. Seeing the gameplay, it looks pretty fun. I was wondering why Yokozuna was so much smaller in it and audibly laughed seeing Jake Roberts effortlessly suplex him and throw him out of the ring. I like the arcade game more for its over-the top specials and the likes, but this was pretty cool to finally see gameplay of.
Rage in the cage uses the royal rumble engine, if you have played that game. It has 20 wrestlers which was big at the time. The 2 things that hold the game back is that there is no tag team mode and no royal rumble mode. The funny thing is that there are 3 tag teams in the game but no tag team mode. (Money Inc, Dibiase and IRS, The Headshrinkers Fatu (Rikishi) and Samu, The Nasty Boys Brian Knobbs and Jerry Sags)
@@marccaselle8108 Going to guess the tag modes and royal rumble were due to both RAM and loading, with a disc loading royal rumble wouldn't really be feasible.
I guess a difference between Sega CD and 32x and other add-ons or related consoles was that they were brought out over in the USA where the scrutiny is greater. It's also a pattern or sequence of Sega developing and releasing consoles and/or add-ons and then abandoning them, which can affect trust with consumers for future releases. I know that I wasn't about to buy a Dreamcast following the manner in which Sega didn't fully support the dedicated consumers of the Saturn and wouldn't bring over all of these great looking games (or doing so very late) that I was staring at in issues of Gamefan, EGM, and Intelligent Gamer at the time. I just stuck it out with the N64 and was perfectly content with it, because I knew that Nintendo would support it up until their next console. Other companies suffered the same criticism though; plenty of flak gets thrown at Nintendo for the Virtual Boy, and it was curtains for NEC in the west after the Turbo-Duo flopped. Had they marketed and released the Supergrafx over here with it's high price-point and whopping five game library it would have garnered some backlash for sure. Same with the Jaguar CD; releasing add-ons like that and then not supporting them is very bad business and that was all she wrote for Atari in the hardware market. With Sega it was more the 1-2-3 punch of Sega CD, 32x, and Saturn not being fully realized. Great games and franchises for Sega systems but you also have to look at the competition and how it all stacks up for the asking price.
Well that and the failure rate of the laser is not to mention the fact it can easily be emulated these days for the most part. It's just more trouble than it's worth.
Dune, Monkey Island and Flashback were staples for me growing up. But Vay was something else for me. Having stumbled on it when I once rented Lunar at a local Blockbuster and finding out the last renter had swapped discs, I rolled with it and had a blast with Vay, a game I'd never have a chance to play again otherwise for years after returning it to the video store.
@@Gatorade69 I only found it because someone swapped out the local Blockbuster Video's copy of Lunar for it, and the store clerks didn't notice the difference. It's decent enough, but really an example of the American gaming market mentality of "can't let kids beat it in a weekend." I easily beat Lunar in the weekend when I first rented it, but Vay is its own savage beast. Every plot point you come across must be preceded by roughly two hours of level grinding, and that's just to barely scrape by the insane number of boss fights the game throws at you. Lunar is better in every single way, especially in the fact that it doesn't outright hate the player.
@@LorenHelgeson I liked what I played of Lunar. I played the version on PS1 (which I think includes the 1st and 2nd games?) over at a friend's house, unlike most of his games he wouldn't let me borrow it.
I was around 12 or 13 when the Sega CD came out. All I remember seeing were ads for full-motion video games like “Night Trap” and those making the music video ones. (To a kid in the 90’s those still seemed cool and futuristic though). I had an SNES and then N64 throughout the decade. But after watching your videos and going back and finally playing some amazing Genesis, Sega CD, and Saturn games, I’ve come to realize I would have been MUCH happier with a Genesis back then!!! So many genres and game types I love now that had no representation on Nintendo consoles were on Genesis and Sega CD. The games on those systems, were more mature and adult than on Nintendo. Not in terms of gore or sex, but in adult themes and stories. I would have lost my mind seeing the Anime cutscenes in stuff like “Vay” or “Lunar”. Or a game like “Battlecorps” which looked great for a 16-bit 1st-person mech game!
Nice series on your Sega CD picks. I always made a distinction between scrolling shooters and stuff like Thunderstrike, which I should play again sometime as I did have that one back in the day. That said, my favorite shooter is Android Assault. It really is quite good, in my opinion. It also feels more cohesive than Robo Aleste, which is not bad, but has some odd quirks. As I recall, WWF Rage in the Cage didn't have tag team matches, despite having a couple of actual teams. That was the biggest disappointment to me in that game. Something like Mickey Mania I thought might have added too many voices. But going back to positives, I really enjoyed Devastator. It's a little basic looking as a first impression, and the game is straightforward, but it was fun and well made.
The Sega CD has a special place in my heart. I don't know why I'm nostalgic so much for that system over all the others I've played and owned. Maybe it's partly because they're so hard to play nowadays or maybe it was just the right point in my life. There just seemed to be such a wide variety of games. It was the one system I never sold any of my games from. It's always nice to see it get some positive attention. There were at least two games in this video that I haven't played that I now want to.
I have very found memories of the mega CD, though I never had one. I do remember the promotional videos showing games with CD quality music, voices, FMVs, etc. I especially remember Dune with French voices! I wasn't fluent in English back then, and seeing one of my favourite game on the PC entirely dubbed in French was just incredible. From the very beginning of the emulation era, I have been waiting eagerly for a mega CD/Sega CD emulator... And then, Kega happened, making one of my childhood dream come true (alongside playing NeoGeo games) 🙂
Some of these titles also look really good. Thanks for sharing this other list. We just had a vintage gaming shop open up in our city so if they have a Genesis and Sega CD I might look into picking it up. What would you consider a fair price for those systems? Since its a shop I can't expect the price to be real cheap but I just don't know honest market value for this.
thanks for shining a light on this, another youtuber has been making videos about sega's failures recently and its good to have a counter balance to remind people that its not the whole story.
it is odd that I had 4 friends that had a Sega CD none of the game collections were the same didn't even have the same games but the base Genesis/Mega Drive games were almost all identical collections
See nowadays when they remaster games they never really give you extra content. But with that Spiderman game you got a bunch of extra stuff. That's how they should do all remasters they should give additional content if you're going to bring a game back imo
Had a Sega CD back in the mid '90's, didn't have a whole lot of games, but I did love it! Just recently bought the console again and starting to rebuild my collection, your videos are very helpful for that purpose. Wonder how you feel about Microcosm, that's one I played a lot back then but hardly hear anyone mention it in these videos.
I was the only kid around with a Sega CD, and loved it dearly. I got to play Lunar, Snatcher, the FMV games, and Dracula Unleashed all as they were released. I NEVER understood the hate for the system (cough AVGN video). The variety of games made it an extremely unique console.
The Developers who made Poful Mail also made Lunar: Eternal Blue and Silver Star. It's the reason why it's so great. But it does suck that no one ever talks about it.
Most of Working Designs' releases on the Sega CD were great, and Popful Mail is really underrated, but I honestly have no love for Vay. It's really frustrating towards the end of the game, the final armor/weapon set that's supposed to be all-powerful does nothing (all enemies just get insanely harder once you get it) and it's just so inferior compared to the Lunar games that have held up so much better.
Different strokes and all that, but I've always felt the pre-rendered cutscenes for Flashback look much worse than the original rotoscoped versions. They're completely at odds with the aesthetic of the gameplay and the attempts at rendering human faces are as bad as you'd expect from CGI of the era (thankfully most of the cutscenes are just of hands and objects and landscapes). The Sega CD version compounds all that with the heavy dithering typical of the platform. The music is pretty good on its own but a lot of it is way too bombastic for the type of game it is. The Genesis version had the rotoscoped cutscenes and struck a good balance by only using music when the action got heavy, but I just wish it had the voice acting from the Sega CD port.
I must admit, I never played pugsy. I found it to odd for my liking, but that was years ago. I think I'm going to give it a try now, you definitely talked me into it, I also never finished vay. Something I'm going to commit to now
puggßy! glad you are talking of this. i had the 2nd demo on mega cd with wiz n liz pugsy microcosm demo intro and sunscreem music vid. also thunderhawk was an amazing shooter if not best choice.
SLX this video and your last are among your best work, and you’re definitely my favorite video game themed YT channel. Sega CD is awesome with many great titles and it’s generally always overlooked, it’s possibly the most interesting console of all, imo. Some notes you didn’t mention but u probably already know: Pitfall is very best version OF ALL on sega cd imo, same for Heart of the Alien, plus it contains a console exclusive sequel, found literally nowhere else!
Likewise BC Racers is best version on Sega CD, it’s generally better than the 32x version. Mega Race is interesting but the speed is always the SAME SPEED since it’s playing FMV, so the environment speed can never change faster or slower, at least that was my impression a few yrs ago… so it seemed a bizarre racing experience…. Dune is wonderful and I used to practice Spanish with its multiple languages. :) Ecco: Tides is great but my favorite is the first Ecco CD, but also Ecco PC is a fantastic must play, it’s free and it’s 32-bit. It has the same fmvs but best quality.
I think Monkey Island has a bittersweet existence on the Sega CD. For many today it's just an inferior port, but to some it may have been their introduction to Point and Click Adventure games. Furthermore, it proved that Sega CD could handle the SCUMM engine, and it's a shame games like Day of the Tentacle never found their way to the platform.
Agreed. My intro to point and click was the NES port of King's Quest V and Maniac Mansion. When I played Monkey Island on Sega CD, it was amazing. But it pales so much compared to any of the PC versions. But, like King's Quest V, it made me appreciate the PC version of Monkey Island even more so when I finally got the chance to enjoy it.
@@LorenHelgeson I mean ports have their place, it's an easy way to get something that would otherwise be inaccessible or an introduction to a series you fully appreciate at a later point. I think the best stuff on the second City of course is the stuff that was never reported to anything else or existed anywhere besides the Sega CD.
My personal favorite FMV title is Double Switch. What a wacky cast of characters. I had to write down a long list of required actions in order to make progress.
Sega CD was the second more injusticed hardware. The first was the Dreamcast, and the third was the Saturn. The world would be a different place without a 32x to muddle the waters.
I wonder if sega started selling the Sega CD as a bundle with Genesis or even a version attached (with the benefit of energy saving) if it would fare better. I mean, they kept selling the genesis until 1997 in the US and up to 95 there were still a reasonable amount of games coming out.
There were a lot of things they should have done. I think the focus on FMV hurt it long run, they really should have played up how much better the sound was and some of the more technical showcases.
They did, kind of. There was the Sega CDX and the JVC X-Eye. However I don't think they were marketed very well at all. I would have totally asked for a CDX had I even known about it but by that point I think they had already abandoned the Sega CD. In fact my family would have probably bought the CDX because it also worked as a CD Player and had multiple uses (Much like how the PS2 sold well because it was also a DVD player).
@@Gatorade69 Friend of mine had a CDX back in the day. Used to think he was the lucky one, but with as hard as those are to repair, I was the lucky one with the model 2 genesis and cd set up.
More Mega CD ? Thx SLX! I was pretty proud of my Sega MCD back in the day's. Even if some games are port of 16bit with FMV "enhancement " , i still found some hardware dedicaded games and those games give me a taste of what the next 32 bit vidéo game génération could be. And plus.... Some graphic effect i always want to see on my Sega Megadrive console. Overall.... I dont regret to buy it and still have it today. If more développement studios make take this hardware add-on more seriously ( like core design do for exemple) even if it should be a hard job of programming. but... Sega internal développement teams doesn't show the good exemple right?! Sega let down this plateforme pretty quickly....

You covered the two games I actually played as a kid here! The Amazing Spiderman on Sega CD had such a great sound track! First game I played on the Sega CD was Rage in the Cage, love what it does over it's 16 bit counterparts
I loved my Sega CD. Played Heimdall over and over no matter how many times I died.
loved my mega CD. I had a game called Black Hole Assault that me and my friend used to play for hours.
Silver Star and Vay are in the App Store!!! Have them both!!!
My favorite on the list was popful mail. I had totally forgotten about it. I loved it and played the heck out of it at the time. Thanks for the reminder SLX
This 2 parter has convinced me that I need to get the good Everdrive so I can play Sega CD games now. Thanks again for giving me more backlog games lol
It’s worth it
I know It's a bit expensive but the Terraonion Mega SD can play Sega CD Isos (and can even handle stuff like Virtua Racing). Joe from Gamesack has a good video about it (and you should check out the channel Gamesack if you haven't before).
@@Walkeranz It really is.
Sega had one of the strongest "finishes" of any console imho. Most of the later games were super high quality.
Excellent follow up! I loved my Sega CD. It did a lot of things right. Much more than it was given credit for.
FMV games were kind of a turn off, even back in the day. Would have liked to see more titles on the Sega CD that weren't FMV games.
Excellent content! Love me some nostalgic SEGA graphics; your content and insight is always top notch and 'nail on head' relevant, always speaks retro/arcade/console truth and no other channel covers that type of content better than The Lord X, excellent history breakdown and always a valued opinion on the subject matter
I love my Mega CD. Had it since the 90s. Love it.
Popful mail is excellent! Great follow up video!
I gotta try that devastator game...
Imagine if Guitar Hero had come out for it? Would of been such a killer app back then, but I guess you could say the same for the TurboCD
I think add-ons weren't popular simply because the consumer saw 2 seperate purchase's even if they had the main console already, just to complicated for the masses.
Nice to see Devastator get some attention. I bought it when it was released and loved it. Also Popful Mail was brilliant.
Popful Mail 😍
Despite the title, you really saved the best for last. And you took my comment into consideration!
Your content is always amazing, and honestly, I couldn't agree more with your sentiments. I remember when I first heard about the Sega CD through the Sonic Gems collection and I thought it was the coolest thing. I still do! lol
The Sega CD is probably one of my top 5 or 10 systems. I like Dracula Unleashed so much, I recorded a playthrough on 📼
The Sega CD 💿 still kick ass today. 😀👍🎮
Yeah, if you can get it running 😅
You mentioned Battlecorps! Thank you!!!
Love that Sega CD content! Good times it was so fun back when it was new
I wish the sega cd had been more affordable.
In the FMV category, Tomcat Alley is a must play. It's Top Gun for Sega CD.
Agreed!
Quite a few games I haven't seen before, thanks so much for your regular uploads that are always worth watching!
Love the combination of personal opinion with legitimate knowledge and a journalistic mindset in these vids. This channel is such a goldmine for those of us who never had these consoles growing up and are exploring them for the first time
Mickey, Sonic CD, Bouncers, & Spidey were gr8
Tomcat Alley was another good FMV game on the Sega CD
Love the Sega CD getting much love lately
Never owned one but always wanted it.
Too pricey nowadays sadly
what they going for these days?
Well that and the failure rate of the laser is not to mention the fact it can easily be emulated these days for the most part. It's just more trouble than it's worth.
If you have a Genesis it's best to get an everdrive that can play Sega CD games.
@@chrisschone782 Got mine for about $80. Completely restored, new drive laser assembly, save battery and capacitors.
Modded Xbox is the way to go.
Great video SegaLordX
Dune, Monkey Island and Flashback were staples for me growing up. But Vay was something else for me.
Having stumbled on it when I once rented Lunar at a local Blockbuster and finding out the last renter had swapped discs, I rolled with it and had a blast with Vay, a game I'd never have a chance to play again otherwise for years after returning it to the video store.
I have never even heard of Vay before.
As promissed on FB here I am to watch this one on a saaaad monday to cheer me up!
Great episode as usual!
Now that was an awesome video. Seeing that anime style platform game got me really hooked as well as those shoot em ups.
Rage in the Cage also lacked tag-team matches...which made no sense because it had great tag teams in it.
Wow, thank you so much for making these.
Time gal was a fun little fmv game. Other than that, most of the games I enjoy were covered in these videos. Awesome job.
Siggggghhhhh! when I saw NHL 94 in this video. Thank you
I have very found memories of the mega CD, though I never had one.
Not to mention the nostalgia of seeing the startup menu of the console and hearing that music, how can I not have a good time with my Sega CD?
Man I wish Sega woulda ported one of its super scalers on Sega CD after seeing this one.
Awesome video yet again! Great episode Sega!
Loved Vay, Glad you mentioned it!
It's a good game. Loved the story in that one.
I was the only kid around with a Sega CD, and loved it dearly. I got to play Lunar, Snatcher, the FMV games, and Dracula Unleashed all as they were released. I NEVER understood the hate for the system (cough AVGN video). The variety of games made it an extremely unique console.
@Mr. Sega and Mr. 3DO I've heard Rolfe isn't that much better, unfortunately. (Not paying people, etc.)
Great videos, Lord X! I love the Sega CD and thank you for bring us this awesome games. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🎮🎮🎮🍻🍻🍻
Glad you like them! Thank you.
The Genesis version had the rotoscoped cutscenes and struck a good balance by only using music when the action got heavy, but I just wish it had the voice acting from the Sega CD port.
the sega cd version of pitfall was amazing. its version of the tazamul mines song is great.
I must admit, I never played pugsy. I found it to odd for my liking, but that was years ago. I think I'm going to give it a try now, you definitely talked me into it, I also never finished vay. Something I'm going to commit to now
Sega CD was awesome in its time.
thanks for another great video LordX!
puggßy! glad you are talking of this. i had the 2nd demo on mega cd with wiz n liz pugsy microcosm demo intro and sunscreem music vid.
also thunderhawk was an amazing shooter if not best choice.
Ecco: Tides is great but my favorite is the first Ecco CD, but also Ecco PC is a fantastic must play, it’s free and it’s 32-bit. It has the same fmvs but best quality.
2 sega cd vids in 1 week, your the best sega lord x!
@@LorenHelgeson
I mean ports have their place, it's an easy way to get something that would otherwise be inaccessible or an introduction to a series you fully appreciate at a later point.
I think the best stuff on the second City of course is the stuff that was never reported to anything else or existed anywhere besides the Sega CD.
Superb.
You should do a compilation of Sega games that came out for the PS2 and Xbox original
I'm sorry i not huge into social media but what is telegram is it an app or a webpage? If its an app ill download it thanks slx
i have squeezed 78 sega cd games onto my sega megapi
Unfortunately, it was something Sega did and would continue to do for the rest of it's run as a console maker.
