    The title of this one seems to have been a poor choice. This isn't a video about the Saturn having the best versions of these games. I meant this to be a video about the Saturn having a solid version of multiplatform titles that are worth your time(as the opening monologue described). As in "winning choices" for your library. If this had been a comparison/best version video the entire thing would have been loaded with Playstation/3DO footage in every segment and I would have called it "21 times the Saturn outperformed its Competitors" or something. I mean I blatantly said in a number of segments the Saturn version had weaker textures and transparencies, so how can it be the definitive version? Anyhow, sorry for the title and should I do a part 2, I'll adjust it.

      It's funny how The Cynical Internet Of 2022 immediately jumps to Platform War mode.
      The title didn't give me those vibes at all. I just expected to see some good Saturn versions.
      And so it was.
      Thanks.

      It's all good. If you actually watch the video the commentary alone would clue you in it wasn't in any way saying these were all the superior versions of these games. The opening monologue point blank said these "look and run comparably well", which shouldn't have been taken as "better", not to mention the rest of the commentary. I only consider a few indisputably superior on Saturn, which I mentioned in that segment(e.g. Mass Destruction).

      @@costumeninja1914 I am not certain if you comment refers to what is my opinion based on the title of the video, SLX also skipped the capcom games and other 2d games because obviously Sega Satun would have been the "winning" platform. Sorry to disappoint but I am "old style" and dont have hate as most of the new gen of today as you soon someone have a contrast in opinions. I dont want to start a debate on this but I do think that is better to have a little bit of reasoning before posting comments that might upset other people just by adding a comment to a video. Have a good day.

    Both NBA JAM and WWF Wrestlemania had far larger sprites on the Saturn than any other console port and also loaded a lot quicker.
    Then there's, Mortal Kombat II, a game so bad on PS1, Acclaim dumped it in Japan.

    Cool thing about Dead or Alive. The Saturn port was specifically made for the console. When the PS1 port came it was also made specifically for the console and it is not a port of the Saturn one. this is actually rare even today because developers take a console and make that the main port and then just take that one and use it for other consoles not taking advantage of other hardware. This happened a lot to multiplatform games on the Xbox and then the PS3. Powerful consoles that multiplatforms never took advantage of the hardware

      Yeah and the 32 bit generation was probably the last generation where the same game could be quite different on the different consoles - with each passing generation the differences between the versions is getting smaller and smaller to the point that now you'd not know what console it was running on unless you were told.

    • @JMFSpike
      @JMFSpike 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jeffb.6642 That's why older games are so much more impressive to me then modern games. Consoles had limitations back then, and developers often had to be really clever in finding ways around those limitations, even getting consoles to pull off things they weren't suppose to be capable of. Consoles today are so powerful that game developers 90% of the time will not be hindered by any console limitations. So modern games may look incredible, but everything is well within the consoles' capabilities. Considering that, I can only be impressed to some extent.

    From my experience, I'd add Rayman to this list: content-wise, the Saturn version is nearly identical to the well known PS1 version but I think it runs better (even on a PAL Saturn) and controls better. Other changes are different background pictures in some stages and some fun little segways between segments for each stage.

    My favorite multi platform releases for the Saturn are Earthworm Jim 2 and Gex, and I proudly own both of them.
    EWJ2 for Saturn remains this day as my all-time favorite video game. It looks, sounds, and plays better than on the SNES or Genesis, and the fact the PS1 version never made it beyond the PAL Region made me gravitate to owning the Saturn version…
    Gex, as well, played better on Saturn as opposed to its PS1 counterpart. While the 3DO save feature is no longer present and instead relies on passwords, everything else was better on Saturn, including the loading times and the sound quality of Gex’s trademark quips, and if I’m bored or sleep-deprived, it’s my go-to game. My only regret is that the later 3D sequels (mainly “Enter the Gecko” since the Saturn was discontinued at the time “Deep Cover Gecko” came out…) never made it to the Saturn…

    Very interesting topic. Multiple titles on Saturn is a topic that is not often talked about despite being rather intriguing. There are some titles I prefer playing on the Saturn even though I grew up playing them on the PS1. I really like the Saturn Version of RE 1 more than the Ps1 version. Yes, the graphic looks different and the Transparency effects are worse but it is still a great game. I also think it plays better on the Saturn controller than the ps1 controller. Alien Trilogy is another great game on the Saturn I prefer over the PS1 version. I also like the Saturn version of DOA 1 more than the Ps1 version. I did play DOA 1 until recently though. I did not get into series before DOA 2 on the Dreamcast. After having purchased both the Saturn and the Ps1 Version of DOA 1 I must say that Saturn wins in that case.
    ps: I would be very happy if there would be part 2 of that series.

Mass Destruction has a better framerate than the PS1 version, the Saturn RE Battle Mode is cool and unique, and Soviet Strike is also compatible with the mission stick which makes it the best version in my opinion. My contribution to the list is Nascar 98. The Saturn version is excellent with the car models being more accurately proportioned than its PS1 counterpart. The PS1 cars look kinda flat or stretched out. Love the channel. Thanks SLX.

    I wonder if the unusual hardware choices of the Saturn were in response to perceived advantages that the SNES had over the Genesis. The SNES had an impressive 3d background layer effect, Mode 7, that the Genesis lacked. The Saturn devotes a huge amount of hardware power to a specialized chip for 3d backgrounds. The PS took a more general purpose approach without a separate background layer enhancement chip.

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The Saturn hardware was a mess of ideas. The most likely course the Saturn hardware design took was that Sega wanted a powerhouse 2D console capable of polygon games that could best the likes of the 3DO and the Jaguar, while handling Model 1 home conversions. Sega probably thought Sony was going a very similar route. Then boom, Sega gets wind that Sony's design is far more powerful than they believed. VDP2(the background chip) is then chucked in last minute to "help" Saturn do more convincing 3D environments. There are interviews with some of Sega's hardware engineers but they never go into detail with timing and/or methodology to any real degree.

  • @JustPeasant
    @JustPeasant 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    As for Resident Evil (Baio Hazādo) the detail that sticks out and separates it from PS1 is that player characters (especially Jill Valentine) skin now has a pinkish hue on it. Just this detail makes character models look more natural and lifelike unlike PS1, where they are so pale, giving off a vampiric like complexion on them🎃

    This impression that the saturn "butchered" game ports from other consoles is mainly due to the fact that we constantly talk about a few examples like Toshinden, Destruction Dernby to illustrate hundreds of other examples. However, in reality, the majority of the ports are similar or else with some differences, in particular at the level of the graphic effects (effect of transparency for example which do not appear as framed when using a composite cable) which do not change absolutely anything on the global aspect of the game, nor on its playability and its interest. The reverse is also true, most ports of the Saturn to other consoles aren't perfect either.

  • @stevenross4223
    @stevenross4223 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Saturn often got screwed with multiplats, but as your video shows, it had some decent examples. Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Street Racer etc all hold up against their PS1 equivalents and I never felt I was missing out on those back in the day (the loss of TR2 hurt at the time though).
    I remember buying WipeOut 2097 (UK based) at release on Saturn and to my 16 year old eyes at the time, it held up next to the PS1 version my friend had. I did notice the loss of transparency, but randomly I mainly noticed the loss of all the Red Bull branding, lol. Looking back, I immediately notice the lower frame rate compared to the PS1, but it didn't jump out at me back then. One of my favourites.

    It's interesting that the Saturn does so well with 3DO ports. I wonder if it's because they both use quads to draw 3d instead of triangles like pretty much every other console.

    • @Gary_Hun
      @Gary_Hun 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't say it like that... this was the beginning of commercial 3D, nobody knew what was best on the long run. Also, quads are the logical choice on a machine with serious hardware sprite drawing capabilities, it's called efficiency.

      @@cryptocsguy9282 In the case of the Saturn, it has hardware accelerated functions to draw a piece of texture between four arbitrarily placed corners. Which could very well be a 2D character... or a 3D polygon, if its corners are calculated from something in virtual space by an other, dedicated chip just for that. So by the way the theory that the Saturn was supposed to be a 2D machine is straight out the window. Also, this is the reason the Saturn look lacks the ugly texture distortions of the PS1, the PS1 and its triangle drawing resulted in that. Very noticeable on large walls. Professional modeling by the way uses quads. The problem mostly comes when you want to port over something which's graphics have been done with triangles.

    I still stand by Sega being my first choice of console brand, but I do still feel it's important to study each and every game to find out which version is the best. Back in the Saturn days, I was limited to the occasional new game purchase and what was available to rent at Blockbuster. I would've rented Street Racer and Soviet Strike, but my local Blockbuster didn't have them! I rented Doom and Destruction Derby, and I could tell the framerate wasn't quite right. Despite Battle Arena Toshinden turning out better on the PlayStation performance wise, I do still admire the Saturn version for having better character portraits and a story mode. When it comes to games that came out for the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube, I automatically opt for the Gamecube version if it offers Gamecube-GBA connectivity, as is the case with Rayman 3 and Fifa 2004 (for example). If you're picky about how detailed games are, you'd feel most at home playing the Xbox version of The Simpsons Road Rage, but if framerate's what you care the most about, you'd be just as happy with the Gamecube version. I know you said not to worry about Dreamcast ports of PSone games, but I would still have liked the Angry Video Game Nerd to review the Dreamcast version of Tomb Raider Chronicles instead of its PSone counterpart, same with Rerez and The Grinch.

    Speaking of ports, one game that would have looked great on the Saturn would have been Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. To this day I have no idea why Crystal Dymamics didn't brought that game to the Saturn...

    To tell the truth I was totally blown away when I saw Mass Destruction in action for the first time! 😱 oh.....my.....gaaaaawd its in 3d & runs at 60fps? On the Saturn??? No way! You have to be kidding me! But its true afterall! Thats simply astonishing! 💪 NMS Software did the unthinkable with the Saturn version here! Amazing!
    I'll even tell you a tiny bit of trivia regarding game's composer, Peter Connelly: during the very late 90s he came to work for Core Design, and guess what - its his tunes we can hear in both Tomb Raider 4 & 5: the last revelation & chronicles respectively. 👍
    P.S. there was one pretty strange case with initially strictly european produced game, which had been eventually ported over to Saturn, BUT for reasons unknown only for the japanese market. Yup, I'm talking Assault Rigs here. 😉 However whats even more important - that port IS utterly good! 👍

    There's an oddball, but still fun game, only for those who really get the hang of how it plays and twitchy controls, Jajamaru: Onigiri Gold, both for PS1 and Saturn, I only knew and played the Saturn as a teen, so when I learned about a PS1 version a few years back, I went and tried it thinking it could be even better, turns out the game is a bit different, I'm not sure which version came first, but control-wise, the Saturn version feels better, there's something off I couldn't get used to in the PS version, but I'll try it more later to see what happens there.
    Courier Crisis is another with a bad rep due to low reviews, but another fun game once you really learn how it controls, as fast turns require holding the slide button, which I don't believe many knew this, still, the Saturn version is better, probably because this game favors more its quads based design for polygons, there's a comparison video featuring a side-by-side view and it's clearer there, something doesn't exactly look right on the PS, specially if you check the horizon, where there's a strange cropping/glitching in the backgrounds, but PS1 is still fun and plays just as great, and a few touchs make me think the PS version was released a bit later, nothing major, but they're there. Casper is yet another example, the PS1 has loadings when you morph into a another form, which is required often to progress in the game, the Saturn is better, probably because its bigger memory and it's a 2D game throughout, honestly for some reason, I think the 3DO version may be even a bit more polished. Dragon Ball Z: The Legend, both for Saturn and PS1, the Saturn has the advantage here, due to the game design, it uses infinite planes as field and sky, with 2D sprites for the characters, so the game runs smooth, while the PS1 version struggles a bit in spots, I think this game is a port on Sony's console, but still a great game for those that had the machine, like a friend of mine who only knew this version. Grandia, of course as this game was designed with the Saturn in mind. I'm not too sure about Rayman, even being a 2D game, I'm not too knowledgeable to tell if the PS1 is inferior or not, what I know is that each version is not a clone to one another, the Jaguar is plainly unfinished (filler music, sound effects missing and even gameplay lacking mechanics such as areas where sliding is part of the ground and is required to advance in the game, the character just walks in like solid, normal floor), even the PC has its own layouts, the same is true for PS and Saturn versions, still, one of my favorites no matter the platform (except for the Jaguar), but I did play it on the Saturn back then, and it does feel really tight to play, looking great too.

    Here's a fun idea for a Sega video topic, if you're not already working on it. ;)
    What if Fighters Megamix had taken off like Super Smash Bros.?
    Like, what if FM had somehow gotten so popular, that everybody had to get a Saturn just to play this crazy Sega crossover game?
    And, since they already had the Saturn, they went ahead and got Virtua Fighter, and Fighting Vipers, and Sonic, and Daytona, and all the other franchises represented, and this revitalized interest in Sega, and Sega lasted as a console manufacturer for several more generations, mainly from everyone having to get a Sega console for the new FM sequel?
    What characters would Sega have introduced in each subsequent sequel, for the Dreamcast, Dreamcast 2, Dreamcast Portable, Dreamcast You, Dreamscroll?
    Certainly they would have promoted Shenmue in FM2. But would they have finally put Sonic in the first sequel, or would they save him for FM3, as the last character you unlock in Fantasy Zone Emissary?
    Maybe this could be the first of a series of Sega What If? videos....

    When I think of cross platform games that are good or better on Saturn, I think of Resident Evil. That is also one of the only games in this video that I'm interested in playing at all. There's plenty of multi plat games like arcade ports too, but clearly that's not the criteria here. loved the video!
