Final Fight CD is so much better than the SNES version, too bad Sega CD wasn't on my radar back then, and even if I wanted one I wouldn't have been able to afford one. I was able to get on the Sega Saturn train though. I'm just now re-visiting the Sega CD library over the last few years thanks in large part to Sega Lord X videos👍
Yup, I actually prefer Final Fight CD to the Arcade version - the music is better in my opinion and I can actually get through it on a credit. The Arcade gets so unfairly difficult I find it hard to play with any feeling of skill.
Well it has coop, all 6 levels, all 3 playable characters and more than 3 enemies on the screen at a time so yeah of course it’s better than the snes version which was just capcom being cheap by not using a bigger memory cartridge to at least fit coop in the game
A wonderful time where 2-3 kids with an idea could get funding and development hardware to create a bold, innovative game that changed the way we look at games. 3D effects were generated with horizontal interrupts, scanline counters, and crude scaling. I remember going to my friends house , he always had the latest and the greatest , he was the first to have a psx too . I remember going in his back room and his older brother and friend were playing mortal kombat on sega cd , I was mesmerized… that’s as close as it got to an arcade port back in those days . After a few rounds of MK I remember playing tomcat alley , and firing the missiles and the FMV kicking in … I was thinking I stepped into a new gen of gaming , this got me fired up for the 32 bit coming the next couple years … freaking awesome time in gaming , great video SLX good stuff

This feels like a present for me. I got a day off work and my wife is working. So what did I do? I got up and the first thing I did today was watching this video. Great content! I love Sega and thanks to the MegaSD I could finally explore the whole Sega CD library.
I remember sewer shark, snatcher, final fight, robo aleste, tomcat alley, terminator, space ace and night trap being my favorite sega cd games I used to own. Oh and Star Wars rebel assault!
knew i should have picked up the genesis mini when i had a chance. does have good compatibility with the sega cd library? any chance it has 32x compatibility as well?
I got my Sega CD for Xmas in '93, and absolutely loved it! Sure, it never lived up to its full potential for several reasons, but my friends were just blown away by Sonic CD, Eternal Champions, the enhanced port of NHL 94, etc...good memories!
My mate had a mega cd back in the day, he had jaguar xj220, I'd only played the amiga port and was blown away by the sprite scaling on the mega cd. To see sprite scaling on a home system always impressed me.
Seriously, you inspire me with your love for video games. Watching your content fills me with nostalgia for a time long since passed and the beauty that came with it. I didn't grow up with the Sega CD, but I did grow up with the Mega Drive and the 16 bit generation was an incredible time to and I was fortunate enough to have experienced it even if being born in 91 meant that the 32 bit consoles were when I would become a gamer.
I LOVE my Sega CD. Always have, always will. The hours I've spent engrossed in RPGS, adventure games, and the FMV games, I can't count. Yes, I do love the FMV games, too! I picked up a complete copy of Snatcher back in 96 or so for around 10 bucks. Best decision ever. Also got Keio Flying Squadron and Popful Mail for almost nothing back then.
Nice! There were times I have been tempted to sell my original copies of Snatcher and Popful Mail but then I realized it would be next to impossible to get them back later. Again, really strange these games were never re-released.
Might just have to go the repro route with snatcher, I just don’t think spending 800+ bucks on a complete copy would be a good decision for my collection as much as I want to play it.
@@johntracy72 I had no idea the prices got so high - all the more reason to include them. I owned all of those, but sold them years ago. Even had the Brady Games guides for most of them. :/
I remember being at a friend's house and experiencing the Sega CD shortly after its release in late 1992. We played Sewer Shark for hours. At the time, the Sega CD seemed like a time machine, showing us the future of video games.
I mean like SLX said through the gift of hindsight we can all see how things turned out and it is odd to look back and see the perception that it had and still has versus what people thought at the time. I know I was kind of impressed at the time but the more I saw of it the less I liked. I never owned it even now and can see the best things that were available for it were never really front and center.
I grew up with the Sega CD. A close friend I was all the time with had one, and it was not uncommon we rent a CD or two and spend a weekend at his house playing. I missed a mention to Spiderman, which for me would win the best original over Terminator. Great video.
I still have my 32X and SEGA CD that I got in the 90's and I personally always enjoyed both. For me it was a blast playing on these mysterious at the time pieces of hardware. I used to come home from school and play Virtua Fighter and Sonic CD.
I traded in my megadrive and sega cd and 32x with over 100 games for a brand new saturn, regretted it years later but holding onto those things just wasn't a done thing then! You made a good decision to hold onto it John!!
Sega CD was the system that i have the fondest memories of. I actually had all the stuff that is now crazy expensive now and played and beat them all. Its the one thing I honestly wish I had kept all of it.
Lost all my mega drive, mega cd, saturn, psx, dream cast, PS2 stuff... And everything else, in a fire. Emulation is your friend! MEGA cd emulation is almost perfect. You just have to fiddle a bit getting the iso files mounted but it works great and you don't have to spend crazy amounts of money on games you want. There's torrents of literally the entire library for mega drive/mega cd that are easy to get. I wouldn't and couldn't spend hundreds on Snatcher for example!
I loved the Sega CD and was there right at launch. The store I got it from had only 1 early one and said it was one of the first ones in Los Angeles. Think it was supposed to be a floor demo in advance of regular stock but they had no kiosks so they sold it to me. Loved every minute of it and it genuinely felt like the next generation. Really glad you gave Jaguar a shout out. It’s not flashy but I had a ton of fun with it and it had a pretty good soundtrack.
I loved my Sega CD! I'm happy to see that many of the games I owned back then made the list! I was one of those people that loved the FMV games, but I also had such a great time playing everything else as well! I will never forget that Christmas morning when my brother and I first witnessed the intro to Sewer Shark, some great memories were had! SEGA!
Snatcher is such a good game. You can’t help but play Snatcher and Policenauts and start to lament that Kojima got so hung up on MGS for nearly two decades.
SoulStar still looks phenomenal today, Silpheed is impressive for how clever the design is to work within the limitations of the hardware to produce excellent results. And i don’t think the Sega CD hurt Sega with the customers; most people who bought it liked it and felt they got their money’s worth with how long it was supported for with a solid amount of unique software and expanded features in ports. The 32x by comparison is a totally different story and did hurt Sega with customers. So did cutting the saturn support so early in the west, those two things were far more damaging than the cd, which as I said; those who owned it during it’s life mostly felt good about owning it.
I agree with you about the Sega CD. I also bought it early on and always enjoyed playing the games. All the games you chose were great, but there were still so many others you could have picked. There were plenty of great games for it. Mistakes were made, and opportunities were missed, but I don’t consider it a failed system in any way. I was in my 20’s when it came out and my friends and I all bought one. No regrets. I love it to this day, and along with the Genesis and Saturn, it’s still my most frequently played system. As you succinctly put it, it was under appreciated. Thanks for the video full of some great memories for me.
Let me say this, and I hope you see it as a compliment: I was a professional game journalist for 8 years, atop being a lifelong gamer (43 now). I know my stuff. But watching this, I concede that you know way more about Sega CD and its library than I do. My hat’s off to you, SLX!
Regarding the Terminator. You know, AVGN's infamous Sega CD review is the only reason I ever picked up that game. Even then, I could tell that he did in fact have an appreciation for Sega and the Sega CD.
Almost 36 minutes of pure Sega CD awesomeness, man this was expensive back in the day and still is but thanks to emulation I can have the opportunity to play your recommendations. Thank you so much for this video is really a work of art.
I normally only watch TH-cam videos that are in the 10 minute range(give or take), as I find most content creators don't have much to say past that time period(if I even watch that long). SLX is one of the few, where I will watch a 30 minute plus long video, and enjoy every minute of it. So thanks again for all the amazing content, as it's greatly appreciated.
Excellent choices - I'd have chosen about 90% of what you did here. Watching this reminded me of how CORE really understood the hardware, and made several of my favorite games on the platform. Great video, sir!
Great list! I'd make one important change though: NHL 94 should be top sports game. It's considered by many the best hockey videogame ever made and the Sega CD version was the superior one. It's highly influential, was very popular at the time for a hockey game (it even appeared prominently in a Kevin Smith movie (Mallrats I believe), aged really well and there is still a fan community organizing tournaments now and then. The sports games featured in this video are good, but let's be honest here : nobody plays them anymore.
They used a custom engine on almost every game back then. If they would have licensed those engines to other developers, they could have been a proto-Unity or Unreal.
Nice video! Sega CD was great. I would put Spider-Man vs The Kingpin as an honorable mention for best soundtrack and best Genesis port. Edit: I just watched your next video after this and saw that you mention it there. Cool
This was an awesome list. The only area I might argue is the Sports games. I would put Nba Jam and NHL 94 as best game and runner up and you could go either way. Both games are incredible and the best ports of their respective game.
NHL ‘94 for Mega CD is one of the greatest sports games ever crafted. Amazed it didn’t occupy the top spot. I’d put NBA Jam as runner up too. And this is coming from someone who grew up in a country where Sensible Soccer ruled supreme back in the day (and yes, I still love that game too)
I mean to be completely honest, Road Rash was the best racing game on any system it was on. I mean yes I wish the Sega CD version was like the PS1, 3DO, & Saturn versions but for what it was (Road Rash 3 with the new version soundtrack) it was still good. Right before I played it I'd just a week before beaten Road Rash 3 on Genesis so it was like a fresh look at a game I wish had more levels, like a RR3 expansion pack
These are games few people played when they came out; it’s a tough system to collect for; and it’s safe to say Sega will never release a Sega CD Mini. It’s up to people like you to champion these games and people will have to play them anyway they can.
Absolutely killer video. I've always loved my Sega CD as well and find that most people that said the games were trash are the ones that never played on the system back when it came out. The list you put together was just great. Now sure some of my favorites didn't make your cut, but I totally see why you would choose some of the games you did. Lunar series is the perfect pick for rpg. Road avenger is another great pick for FMV game even if two others that I liked didn't make the cut, but it's a packed category. I'm just glad to see you doing more Sega CD videos.
Ive just recently gotten into collecting Sega consoles, i missed out on much of Sega as i grew up with Nintendo and then moved on to Sony and then Xbox but now i have a Sega Saturn, 32x, Sega CD, Genesis and Dreamcast and soon a Game Gear and im loving all the time im having with them. So many amazing games i missed out on and now am finding out and learning about and giving second chances too. Back in the day (im 40) we rediculed Sega CD and laughed at its VMV games but as an adult, i appreciate it now and its history and what it tried to do. Sega was so innovative back then and even though not everything stuck, it was still cool to see and look back on. And you channel has been invaluable in my Sega Education. Thanks!
Looking back, the Sega CD would have fared better if it went the route of the Turbo/PC Engine CD: Focus on using the massive storage to make high end, quality games. If instead of mass amounts of FMV games we got definitive ports of Genesis games, like some of the ones you mentioned here, alongside games that couldnt fit onto a cartridge, I think it would have been remembered more fondly. Castlevania Rondo of Blood and YS Book I and II are good examples of PC Engine CD games that used the CD technology to supercharge traditional game design. These days the PC Engine CD library is a lot more interesting to go back to for that reason, but there are still some good games for the Sega CD that show what could have been.
I remember getting my sega cd as a Jr. High kid and I was blown away. Everybody that came over to see it I would pop in Sewer Shark and everyone was blown away. FMV on a home console, just unbelievable. I know now it looks bad and cheesy but that game has so many memories tied to it ill always love it and still play it from time to time still today. I have a series x and PS5 today but they couldn't give the absolute joy that my sega cd brings.
The CD is something I believe has value as an add-on for the Genesis; I would personally do without most of the FMV games and request an increase in color, but the hardware for some special games is there. The Terminator, Mickey Mania, Final Fight, Snatcher, Lunar: Eternal Blue, Mortal Kombat, Sonic CD, it had it all.
I remember my dad fixed and sold computers in partnership with a pawn shop so he just showed up with the sega cd and games out of nowhere. This was a good console. I didnt even have the best games and i still knew it was a good console. Sol Feace, Silp head, sewer shark, eccho, cant remember any more.
Another job well done! I too loved the Sega CD and I enjoyed every minute of this video. I am happy to say I own most of the games on this list including an original disc of Snather. The Sega CD is one of the reasons why I am a retro gamer today. Thanks for the video and I can't wait to free up some time from work to spend some quality time playing my Sega CD. I have to also give a shout-out to Jurassic Park on the Sega CD. Back in the day, it blew my mind with its immersive gameplay that takes place right after the events of the movie. This was another game that was just not possible on a cart and it is also another Sega CD exclusive.
Man, not a lot of people talk about the MegaCD with love... it's good to hear! I really enjoyed the format of this video.. I'dd love to see it for more Sega Consoles!
I remember my friend had a Sega CD when it was new and we had a blast playing sewer shark, hook, sonic CD, WWF rage in the cage, final fight CD, rise of the dragon, lunar the silver star, shining Force CD, mortal Kombat CD and more.
I sincerely appreciate your list and reviews of the SegaCD specially for the fact that you experienced the platform on its heyday. I would like to add to your list the category "Japan Only" and I definetively would say that "Captain Tsubasa CD" is the best. It's like a soccer game mixed with RPG gameplay, it mimmicks quite well the experience of watching an episode of the anime, and I couldn't tell you how amazed I was discovering a Captain Tsubasa (or "Supercampeones" if you are from Latam like me) game was officially released on the platform
I still have mine including most of my games. Night Trap is probably my most purchased game as I have the game on Sega CD and 32X plus the Vita and Switch. My favorite though is Ground Zero Texas and the one game in my collection I will never sell is Snatcher. I also still have Rise of the Dragon and the hint book.
I loved my Sega CD!! Seeing this video brings me back to the early days. And I had some of the best games. ( for real though I bought it for Sonic CD did take me a year-and-a-half or longer yes, yes it did.) Dark wizard, sonic, soul star, snatcher, silphied, and both lunars
I got a MegaCD2 a few months before the Saturn arrived and I loved this extension of the 16bits. Most of the game you listed I got too and I'd add titles like "Power Monger" (I spent so many hours on that one), "Theme Park", "Prince of Persia", "Formula One World Championship: Beyond the Limit" and "Dune". This machine had excellent games for its time and Sega could have done great things with it, imagine what a compilation of ports of "Streets of Rage" could have done to the sales.
I loved the SEGA CD. My favorite system of all time. I had a paper route, so I could afford, what was at the time a premium game system. Great 90s memories. I had it plugged into my stereo system, as it also played music CDs.
Sonic CD and Mortal Kombat are the games I keep coming back to when I load up my Sega CD. As well as my guilty pleasure, Sewer Shark. That game came with my system way back in the day and I have some really fond memories with it, even if I can acknowledge that it’s not a great game.
Sewer Shark has kind of a weird feel to it you get hypnotized by the motion of the tunnels. Get a copy of SOUL STAR if you can its an amazing game with real 3D graphics thats the one I wish I could get
Congratulations on the video Sega Lord X! No doubt alot of blood, sweat and tears went into making this, well done. Just wanna point out some things like the Formula 1 racing game ''Beyond The Limit'' or ''Heavenly Symphony'' in Japan. I noticed there was no footage of that game in your video and I fully understand not all games were going to be included, but that game has some of the best scaling and rotation i've ever seen on the system. My most favourite F1 racing game of all time! Also the Core Design Mega Drive/Genesis games such as ''Chuck Rock'' and ''Wolfchild''on the add-on included extra levels and in some cases the same levels were extended to make a larger, longer playing experience, tis was briefly mentioned in the video but not those specific titles. Awesome video, loved watching it.
Loved my Sega CD. Lunar is still one of my favorite RPGS and the Sega CD version is still the best way to play it. Sonic CD is the most unique Sonic game. And every game you touched on in this video is a gem.
You’re the MVP of the Sega community on TH-cam. You’re always fair, balanced and just have a calming presence that works well so that when you get enthusiastic, it makes things stand out well. I thought I knew my Sega games, but thanks to you, I got so much more mileage out of my Saturn, with games that are now favorites of mine like Bulk Slash and Kieyo’s Flying Squadron, among many others. You also mentioned superb hacks for the Genesis, such as Mortal Kombat Arcade Edition, which is now easily the best looking and playing version of Mortal Kombat on consoles of that era, including the Sega CD version. The color hacks video put me on to how good Final Fight for the Sega CD could look, and your 32x games reviews were also very fair, highlighting how better ports of some of those games have been made by many of the talented artists and coders in thr Sega fan community. All I can say is thanks! I was the only person in my friends group with a Sega Saturn until 9th grade, where my track team had a gaming party we’d throw after practice on the school AV system, playing Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop 1-2, Street Fighter Alpha 2, and Sega Rally 2. I remember PS1 owning friends finally understanding why we loved the Saturn. The other cool thing about being the Sega lover on my block as a kid was getting to play the Nintendo systems at my friends houses, then they’d get a different experience at mine. My friend had his birthday recently, I’ve known him since 1st grade, he too loved Sega, so we’d trade carts, but he lived about 8 mins by bike ride, and I couldn’t ride over there too late as a kid. He had an arcade party in 3rd grade, and we took an updated photo with each other playing TMNT arcade, as well as house of the dead, despite that one coming out much later on, given that his wife rented some classic arcade machines for his birthday party. His son finally had a chance to play some of the games we grew up with, and it was amazing. He said he’d never play House of the Dead ever again after beating it with me on free to play mode, then a girl that lives next door to him came by and asked him to play it and he played through the whole game again. He’s young so he loved how overly campy it was, and despite the old school 3D graphics, it hit me as to how stunning it still looked on the perfectly crisp, refurbished CRT screen it had. Despite the age of the graphics, and the green blood, he had a few jump scares from it. Another cool thing is, despite not growing up with Sonic, he loves the movie. It’s a strangely good time to be a Sega fan, it’s almost surreal. It’s even crazier to see Sega poke fun at themselves with the appearance of Uncanny Valley Ugly Sonic in the Chip N Dale’s Rescue Rangers Disney Plus movie, which was surprisingly good.
Still one of my favorite platforms. I still play all the working designs games to this day. That's why I put popful mail as my favorite platformer. Snatcher is my all time favorite adventure game.
Lord of Thunder, Shining Force CD, Lunar, Sonic CD, Samurai Shodown, Eternal Champions, Final Fight, Rebel Assault, Time Gal, Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, Secret of Monkey Island, Snatcher... 👌😌 so good!
About scaling/zooming: I was really, really expecting that Samurai Shodown for Sega CD was the perfect home port. When it was released without it, it was the end of SegaCD for me. I loved Sonic CD but it was super hard and expensive get games in Brazil.
Like you, I always loved my Sega CD. I agree with your 1st two choices, and probably most of the others. Lords of Thunder has one of most insanely good soundtracks I've ever heard
I loved my SEGA CD. My best friend had a SNES. When we hold hang we would play Mortal Kombat CD, Eternal Champions, Microcosm, Silpheed, and Star Wars Chess. It took forever. I also remember playing Tom Car Alley. And Willy Bemish. Or whatever it was. The Terminator was the hidden jewel though. I’ll be honest, we preferred Sonic 2 over Sonic CD. We got to rent Night Trap once, and then it was only for 17+. The rental place was next to a Subway and Little Ceaser pizza. Soul Star was the one we rented once, and then someone stole it.
Great video yet again SLX, no idea how you've managed to put out such a quantity of videos, whilst retaining the quality all this time. Refreshing to hear somebody just share their memories and experiences with some classic consoles and games, without resulting to shouting and swearing for the sake of it. Keep up the great work, we appreciate it 👍👏🏴
I owned both the Japanese MegaCD and the US SegaCD at the time they were released. I had no idea there were still so many high quality games for it that I completely missed out on. I probably just gave up on the thing before it hit its stride.
Thank you for the Silpheed shout out! Means alot to my 13 year old inner child / SEGA CD owner. I saved my lunch money everyday (except pizza day) for a year and a half to buy the SEGA CD mear weeks after it launched! I knew the system didn't live up to even my own expectations but Silpheed was always my, "See I am not an idiot for buying this thing!" go to! Silpheed is still my favorite looking SEGA CD game!
I was working for VGA magazine when I stopped into Totally Video Games to pick up my launch SEGA CD. it's still one of my best memories. I had preordered it and all the games and went back to the office and connected to our pvm. That Sega CD is still one of my prized possessions. There are tons of great software on the Sega CD and it got and still gets a bad rap. Thanks for this one Sega Lord.
Yup. I still remember when I got mine a few months after it launched. That feeling of having something special was real. I played Revenge of Shinobi and Streets of Rage all night.
I really liked my Sega CD, but the load times were killer in some cases. The one good thing I can say on that front is that it made it easy to know when you did the proper inputs for a fatality as the game would freeze for a moment and you'd hear the drive seeking. A game I rarely see mentioned anywhere that I had was Third World War. It wasn't the best game, but I liked purposefully setting off a global nuclear war to get the ominous cinematics and then watch the mushroom clouds form on the map.
Awesome video, you brought back some great memories sega lord x. Here in Australia the sega cd was priced at $700 dollars and only being 16 at the time, it was way out of reach. When my mates and I saw the first live demo, it was simply amazing, animation and speech coming from a game was just incredible, then to hear cd music was unbelievable. In 94, I was very fortunate to win a to play and compete in the sega championships, coming first for state and runners up for Australia. Winning a sega cd and games along the way. What a fantastic time it was for gaming back then you just get the same feeling for today games, like you did back in the day.
I love everything about Sega CD. I love the console (or addon, whatever), I love the games, being FMV or not, I love the history behind it, I love the memories from childhood it brings me and I love the fact that I have a Sega CD in my tiny, but loved collection. I don't know, even the name "Sega CD" is pleasant to say. 🤣
I loved the Mega CD when I was a kid, though I didn’t have many interesting games for it. Did have Road Avenger and Sonic CD. It played music CDs too, which was great because I didn’t have a stereo back then! 😆
The biggest surprise, NHL 94 CD wasn't chosen for best sports. I also always liked this version of Joe Walsh football. Back then I loved the surround sound crowd noise when you played, simple as that aspect is.
I had both Road Avenger and Night Trap and I loved them both, I own NightTrap now on PS5 and Nintendo Switch. It does have replay value and is harder to keep up with all the rooms, as a kid I had mastered it, but now I keep missing those guys. I loved my Sega CD.
The Sega CD was an exciting system. CD-based sound and the visuals of games like Batman Returns, Silpheed, Night Trap and Road Avenger represented the cutting edge of gaming technology at the time. I imported the japanese model at launch despite the awful launch lineup, which was followed by a year-long drought of good games lasting until the release of Robo Aleste. Subjectively, I still love the Sega CD of course. From a more objective standpoint, some Sega CD games don't hold up particularly well, as they relied heavily on a visual appeal that has greatly faded with time. Others do still hold up well, like for example Final Fight, Sonic CD or Ecco. In terms of missed opportunities, a Sonic 1-3 compilation with a CD-based soundtrack would've been a homerun. Ports of sprite-scaler arcade games like Outrun, Outrunners and Super Monaco GP were sorely missed too.
Oh man, that brings me back such great old souvenirs! I spent hours playing awesome games like Night Trap (writing lists of room to finish the game). Also Double Switch, Ground Zero Texas, Dune (with voices. I was in French) World War 3 (super awesome). I had a version called CD X, which was a compact version of the Genesis, and Sega CD together. Rise of the dragon: "Everybody calls me: THE JAKE!", "No weapon detected. You're clean. Go on in"
On a side note, I'm still completely floored that Viewpoint & Return Fire never got Sega CD ports. Both could've really utilized the CD upgrade before the Saturn & PS1
I was actually thinking what is the best fmv game this morning and I think I agree with the choices you presented. Think the genre could still have room to thrive today, that is if done correctly.
For me the sega cd was $30 (refurb but in box) and $40 for the 32x. The games were decent and different. CD in particular kind of ... Other worldly. Being able to hook up the CD output to my stereo system...very cool.
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching.
Yeah the music sounds like a cool 80s cop movie!
Good lord yes! I loved the FF soundtrack on Sega CD!
I love how game developers were creative and took bold decisions so naturally. I'm glad we lived thru those great days in the 90s.
Best software ever.
A wonderful time where 2-3 kids with an idea could get funding and development hardware to create a bold, innovative game that changed the way we look at games. 3D effects were generated with horizontal interrupts, scanline counters, and crude scaling.

If Howard Lincoln had his way all those knarly titles would of been outlawed by senator dweeberman
We still have alot of Creativity and Innovation today.Just look at EA Games.😊❤
Hearing SLX say “this was incredibly fun to make” you just know as an audience member you’re in for a treat.
And I meant it. I really enjoyed the Sega CD.
I read your commentary at the exact same time he said it. No joke

nobody looks at NBA Jam on the Sega CD. but it played just like it does in the Arcade!

This feels like a present for me. I got a day off work and my wife is working. So what did I do? I got up and the first thing I did today was watching this video. Great content! I love Sega and thanks to the MegaSD I could finally explore the whole Sega CD library.
Sega CD much like Nintendo DS, is a massively underrated gem.
I just love your passion for these games. Your first hand perspective during the lifetime of these consoles is invaluable.
Sega CD games many of them are masterpieces.
I remember sewer shark, snatcher, final fight, robo aleste, tomcat alley, terminator, space ace and night trap being my favorite sega cd games I used to own. Oh and Star Wars rebel assault!
Also for silly FMV fun try wirehead.
I’ve gone a little nuts adding Sega CD games to my Genesis Mini. Fun to see what I missed out on all these years.
As for Road Avenger, it’s good but not as good as the SNES FX Pak Pro version. That one is perfect.
knew i should have picked up the genesis mini when i had a chance. does have good compatibility with the sega cd library? any chance it has 32x compatibility as well?
@@eternalthree I have a bunch of Genesis games on my hacked SNES classic. I know, blasphemy, right?! Haha
Is hacking it difficult?
I love how SEGA CD was bragging about its FMV games and its not EVEN GOOD AT FMV. It cant do full-screen and it has only 8 colors
I got my Sega CD for Xmas in '93, and absolutely loved it! Sure, it never lived up to its full potential for several reasons, but my friends were just blown away by Sonic CD, Eternal Champions, the enhanced port of NHL 94, etc...good memories!
Dude that NHL game is one of the best sports games ever. I still have my copy. Definitely liked it better than FIFA
I hope homebrew developers can make some games you can play these sega cd games on everdrive pro you don’t need the hardware just roms and bios files
I didn't grow up with the Sega CD, but I did grow up with the Mega Drive and the 16 bit generation was an incredible time to and I was fortunate enough to have experienced it even if being born in 91 meant that the 32 bit consoles were when I would become a gamer.
yes yes yes, I cannot get enough of the sega CD so many titles that made the first jumps into CD platform
Yup. So many good games.
@@SegaLordXespecially the shooting game, Silpheed and Starblade.
I own a lot of my favorites as well, but Snatcher eludes me.
Nice! There were times I have been tempted to sell my original copies of Snatcher and Popful Mail but then I realized it would be next to impossible to get them back later. Again, really strange these games were never re-released.
I remember getting Snatcher new at EB Games for $6.99 around 95-96. Amazing game.
@@DeathlessDevil Wow! What an amazing price. Enjoy.
Might just have to go the repro route with snatcher, I just don’t think spending 800+ bucks on a complete copy would be a good decision for my collection as much as I want to play it.
Lunar and Eternal Blue are flat out my favorites on that system.
Same for me. Throw in Shining Force CD for my 3rd favorite
I'm going to toss in Vay, Dark Wizard, and Popful Mail. Working Designs was awesome!
@@cakelies Popful Mail is very expensive now, about $1,200 on Amazon.
@@johntracy72 I had no idea the prices got so high - all the more reason to include them. I owned all of those, but sold them years ago. Even had the Brady Games guides for most of them. :/
@@jmarx3943Fatal Fury Special CD also.
The Zombie Historian Thank God "Sewer Shark" wasn't the future!😂🤣
@@attilathehun0
Yep we can all be glad that game was "dog meat'. (That's a reference to the game in case it wasn't obvious)
I remember as a kid, trying out RPG's from time to time and hating them. Lunar was the game that changed that for me.
Never played any Sega console, but thanks to the maigc of emulators im going back and enjoying so many. This list is awesome
Love me some Sega CD, those were an extremely exciting couple of years!
It was. I played it as much as my Genesis, easily.
Same.
5:44 this looks SO much better than OG Starfox. I love good Sprite art. Sprite scaling for 3-D is something I want to bring back to 2-D games.
I want a 3-D Ecco that plays like Zora link from Majora’s Mask.
Let me say this, and I hope you see it as a compliment:
I was a professional game journalist for 8 years, atop being a lifelong gamer (43 now).
High praise. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Nice touch with the Batman Returns track on the intro, always loved that song lol.
Core design rule on the Sega CD. They really show some skill and love for the platform. 👍
Made 16bit look like 32bit
They used a custom engine on almost every game back then. If they would have licensed those engines to other developers, they could have been a proto-Unity or Unreal.
@@tony_bologna every 3d game they did on Sega CD was on point even tomb raider on ps1
@@rustymixer2886 couldn't agree more. They really did have a period there where they were on the cutting edge.
Came to say this. NHL 94 had to be best sports game on the system
Batman on the Sega cd is what made me buy the console. It looked absolutely phenomenal at the time
Same here.
These are games few people played when they came out; it’s a tough system to collect for; and it’s safe to say Sega will never release a Sega CD Mini. It’s up to people like you to champion these games and people will have to play them anyway they can.
but they just announced this exact thing...
Great video! I loved the Sega CD Mortal Kombat release, it seemed to be one of the best home ports of the day
I always thought so.
I wouldn't say it was the best. PC was better, but definitely the best on console.
Plus, sega cd will need to forget about the scaler chip and extra m68k cpu.
Dune 1 was my favorite Sega CD game
Lunar!!!
Snatcher has also become an insane collectible because it was one of Hideo Kojima’s earliest games which you failed to mention.
I loved my Sega CD!!
Seeing this video brings me back to the early days. And I had some of the best games. ( for real though I bought it for Sonic CD did take me a year-and-a-half or longer yes, yes it did.)
Dark wizard, sonic, soul star, snatcher, silphied, and both lunars
It’s a tough game too. You need two people to keep up with the tunnels.
They're coming and they're coming fast Dogmeat! 😄
Sewer Shark has kind of a weird feel to it you get hypnotized by the motion of the tunnels. Get a copy of SOUL STAR if you can its an amazing game with real 3D graphics
thats the one I wish I could get
Congratulations on the video Sega Lord X!
Super Glad you included Thunderhawk here. This was incredible at the time and my favourite game on the platform
👌😌 so good!
I still play soulstar and batman regularly along with thunderhawk.....
And jaguar xj220
About scaling/zooming: I was really, really expecting that Samurai Shodown for Sega CD was the perfect home port. When it was released without it, it was the end of SegaCD for me. I loved Sonic CD but it was super hard and expensive get games in Brazil.
NHL "94, Monkey Island, and Third World War were absolutely robbed.
Like you, I always loved my Sega CD. I agree with your 1st two choices, and probably most of the others. Lords of Thunder has one of most insanely good soundtracks I've ever heard
Nice compilation! One of the best gaming awards I have seen! Awesome Video SLX!
All the games you mentioned is worth owning a Sega CD. For me it was Final Fight CD.
I'm with you dude. Sega CD does not get enough love. I loved the system and have amazing memories playing it till the sun came up
I loved my SEGA CD.
It was tough to find places that rented Sega CD where I lived. Blockbuster had some but it wasn’t nearly enough.
@@SegaLordX damn, almost every rental place in my area had it. Hell you could rent CDX systems there too.
Mortal Kombat on Sega CD was definitely the closest arcade rendition available at the time.

Great video yet again SLX, no idea how you've managed to put out such a quantity of videos, whilst retaining the quality all this time. Refreshing to hear somebody just share their memories and experiences with some classic consoles and games, without resulting to shouting and swearing for the sake of it. Keep up the great work, we appreciate it 👍👏🏴
You've certainly timed this video well what with the recent announcement of the Megadrive Mini 2!
Oh come on! I LOVED Joe Montana football! Of course Montana is my favorite football player of all time, so I maybe be just a BIT biased. 😂
The music of ecco on sega cd, was so beautiful.
Relaxation fuel.
Lol, I was just thinking about that. I had the SEGA CD plugged into my stereo. The soundtrack was incredible.
Keio Flying Squadron got robbed, that helicopter game isn't a shoot em up. Nice video though, keep up the good work!
My favorite sega cd game was flashback the quest for identity it blew the cartridge versions out of the water.
Travellers tales was like the Bentley of game developers
I loved the Mega CD when I was a kid, though I didn’t have many interesting games for it. Did have Road Avenger and Sonic CD.
It played music CDs too, which was great because I didn’t have a stereo back then! 😆
I'm still to this day excited to play new FMV games that come out. I've always loved them for some reason.
Have you ever tried wirehead on Sega cd? Imo fmv hidden gem on the system
Sega CD was my first CD Player! I still have mine and a decent selection of games.
Me too. It was my main CD player for years. I still remember going to the store, and buying my first CD: Mariah Carey, music box
The biggest surprise, NHL 94 CD wasn't chosen for best sports. I also always liked this version of Joe Walsh football. Back then I loved the surround sound crowd noise when you played, simple as that aspect is.
This video was spot on. I couldn't agree more with your selection.
Thank you fella, excellent vid! 💯🔥🙏
I really wanted to see an Outrun/Outrunners port. I know it woulda had concessions but I really think it still would have been cool.
Go on in"
I still think Soul Star looks incredible today, and I was previously unfamiliar with AH3 Thunderbolt, so I'll have to give that a look.
I play everything you say is the best and I’m never let down
On a side note, I'm still completely floored that Viewpoint & Return Fire never got Sega CD ports. Both could've really utilized the CD upgrade before the Saturn & PS1
This is my new favorite series. Please do more like this!
I was thinking that very thing.
I was actually thinking what is the best fmv game this morning and I think I agree with the choices you presented. Think the genre could still have room to thrive today, that is if done correctly.
I think it can still be a fun genre if it’s presented properly. You really need some decent production values and a gripping story.
I never realized that Silpheed had video backgrounds till years later
For me the sega cd was $30 (refurb but in box) and $40 for the 32x. The games were decent and different. CD in particular kind of ... Other worldly.
Being able to hook up the CD output to my stereo system...very cool.
