It always cracks me up when I hear your dad's eternal hatred for RPG video games. Reminds me of how I annoyed my dad when I played Battlefront with him as a kid and all I wanted to do was explore the worlds instead of fighting the enemies. "Quit exploring the fields and come fight!" It cracks me up every time I hear "he would just shake his head". My first console was (and still is, since I still have it) my Dad's old Sega Genesis. Even though I was born in 1997, I got the classic hand-me-down treatment when it came to looking for a video game console to have in my room. With Sonic 2 and Mortal Kombat being the provided games (still have them to this day), I was hooked to the point that I still occasionally play them to this day. As stated, they still work just fine, even after being briefly submerged in a flood a few years ago! Kinda looks weird (but satisfying) playing it on a 4K tv without special convertors.
I used to play N64 wrestling games with mine, and one of my favorite things was creating my own wrestlers. Wasn't really the highlight for my old man, he made a few but he was more of a "just turn the game on and play' whereas I spent too much time making mine lol
My dad's biggest regret was that me and my brother had any type of computer/console AT ALL! We were hooked but he always felt we should be doing more traditional things like "going outside" and playing football or cycling etc haha
My dad wasn't massive on gaming but used to enjoy watching me and my brother play. He also used to just say "want a new game?" Every couple of weeks and take us to Toys R Us to get a new one. He did enjoy Desert Strike though and I used to smile when setting the SNES up in the living room then watching him get into it.
Your dad was WONDERFUL !!!! And I agree with him . I'm still not a fan of Pokémon or RPGs . But I am a 51 year old grumpy old man . To each their own .
These therapeutic videos are always so good and entertaining. Would love to see what modern games he'd like if he were with us today. If you're able to one day
To the best of my knowledge, my father only ever played 2 video games: Kings Quest 2, and Marble Madness. We got a Tandy 1000EX computer in the mid 80s and these were the first two games we got. My dad, brother, and myself, worked our way through KQ2 together, and he seemed to really enjoy that. Marble Madness utterly broke him though. He could get to the last level, but could not pass it, and it made him really angry. So angry, that I am pretty sure he never touched a never video game ever again. This is one of the many things I wished I had asked him about before he passed, I’m pretty sure my memory serves me well but I’ve always wanted to confirm it. Thanks for posting this, even though video games weren’t a thing my dad and I really shared together beyond that brief glimmer in time, I find you processing your own emotions and memories of dad to be cathartic for similar purposes myself. What a treasure your dad left behind for you with all this footage. Cheers!
The awesome blossom - there is an onion blossom at Outback Steakhouse. I thoroughly enjoyed the awesome blossom. I remember the ads in the mail that would give a free awesome blossom with the purchase of two entrees.
I get it. He hates Pokémon because the visors and graphics but kids like us we like to do it doesn’t matter about the graphics and stuff but dads are different.
This is such a great channel! I was born in '89 so I grew up around a lot of this stuff and playing tons of games. This is an incredible time capsule of that era and this is a great way for me to show my son how things were back then. I love this!
Quickly becoming my favorite channel. This hits ALL the nostalgia for me. You have no idea lol. Even though I was raised on nothing but a gamecube, this time period and your videos are so crazy similar to my experience
My dad didn't like video games, but we bonded over comedy, whether it be stand-up or movies. I've come around to some musical comedians, but back in the 00's, we groaned every time one would come on Premium Blend on Comedy Central. We'd just tune out and maybe talk during their set. We loved George Carlin.
My dad's list of games he hated was quite robust. He hates them all and I never had the experience of playing a video game with him to this very day. He did record me playing Spiderman versus the King Pin for the Sega Genesis as well as Sonic 2. He was definitively a camcorder dad! I love both my parents and they always have my best interest at heart. I will say that when I have children, I will make a point to play at least some video games with them. That's inevitable. Cherish these memories forever, Tyler. Your father's memory is alive and well!
Only true video game players have games they love and hate, your dad was a legend! Been waiting for a new my retro life episode this one’s gonna be a good one! 😃
This is such a cool idea for a video, man. My father hated games in general, just couldn't understand why someone would play them at all. As a gaming father, I never thought I would have those same feelings myself, but I'm finding that I loathe certain games and, more accurately, certain types of games. My son is a huge Minecraft junkie, getting into the dirt of the game so to speak, and the more I play it with him, the more I end up like your father on the recliner shaking my head. I'm much more of a JRPG person myself, and I'm trying to find ways to "turn" him in the right direction lol. It's tough being a dad, as you know. Great vid!
I love your channel so much. My Dad and I loved video games as well when I was a kid. Going to the local video game shop was a common weekend activity for us. Watching your videos definitely gets me a little teary eyed thinkin of my Pops. Thank you for the awesome nostalgic content.
OMG you unlocked memories here. I had one of those Casio keyboards when I was a kid, and I would play that song all the time over and over again. Very good times!!
Pokemon Blue is a surprise to me! I loved those games as well and spent many hours playing this one! It is funny when I look back at games I loved but my brothers hated. Bart Vs. The Space Mutants is a terribly designed game, but for some reason I was obsessed and mastered it. My brothers despised it with every inch of their being. Great video Tyler, keep em coming!
Omg those Simpsons games for the NES were not good. I was trrrrryinggggg to overlook it, but it didn't work. It was more like, just be appreciated that they made a Simpsons video game finally for the home systems and don't complain lol. All I can say is thank GOD they made a classic Simpsons arcade video game that is stellar and incredible to this day.
I bought Pokémon Red and Blue on the same day and gave one to my best friend. I was 15 then and we’re still friends. We were quietly obsessed with Pokémon 😂 💪🏾
I always try to get my dad to try roleplaying games since he hates most online games, but he always says "it sounds boring, just running around doing whatever you want. What's the goal?" Me: "Whatever you want!" "Boring." LOL!
I still love pokemon. I played red version more, but my favorite was silver version I spent so much time there it helped me when my dad passed away to get threw life 😊 🎉last game he ever bought me still remember like yesterday 😢 thankyou dad 💪💯🫡🙏✨️👌
That’s funny! My stepdad doesn’t play video games, but he loved sewer shark. I remember he would just walk into my room and say. “ put in the sewer shark” 😂🤣😂…. yeah, it’s not a good game
My Dad mainly liked real time strategy games like Populous 3 and Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds. He was born 1946 so more of the TV generation but there were a few games he liked. I never got into Pokemon but my little brother was into it.
My family filmed a lot in the 80s and the 90s, but usually it was just birthday parties or vacations or Christmas. My parents never filmed us just talking about a game or movie or pop culture.
Just love your videos my dad filmed me too, but not as much as your dad wish he did one kid thought my dad was with a news crew, how big the cameras were back then. I was curious on the Mario 3 do you still have that rare version cartridge your aunt found finally at Toys r us.
Pokemon was what got me into Rogue/Roguelike/Roguelite. It was the first game I played where every attack had limited uses, and limited money. I was already too old for “kid’s” games, but it was just a very innovative game for me to pass. My marching band crew would play the game over link during the downtime in football games where we performed.
Your dad was awesome!! I think I say that with every video you post lol, but it’s true! My parents rarely ever played games with me, they didn’t care for them. But that’s ok. Great video!

You said your dad didn't like RPG games im just curious is mario rpg a exception? Im sure you had it back in the day . Pokemon just seems like one of those games that it's really hard to get into later in life. My first pokemon was on the GBC. I can't remember which one. I always thought it was either Silver or Crystal, but my parents INSIST it was yellow. What I do remember is CONSTANTLY wanting to play it, and CONSTANTLY begging my dad to save it for me. So one day, when I went to play it, i couldn't find it. My parents told me they had returned it because I couldn't read. I was disappointed. I not only no longer had probably my favorite game for GBC (despite not being able to get anywhere, it was that, or paperboy and Arthur's day out.... so yeah) but my parents seemed to just think I'd never read. I mean, they could've just shelved it until I could read. So clearly they had very low expectations of me. But it finally clicked when I got ruby years later. Holy hell. This is still my favorite pokemon game. Well, specifically ruby, sapphire, and emerald. I really don't care which one I play, but I had a red GBA SP, and the game that was almost always in it was that red Pokemon Ruby cart. It was just the way the universe should be. I beat it at least twice as a kid, and I don't beat many games even once. I went on to play a lot of the DS entries, including Diamond, platinum, and Soul SIlver. But when black came out, I was in that perfect era of late middle school where I just felt like I was done with Pokemon. The new one, Pokemon Black, had some really dumb pokemon, in my opinion at the time, and I had newer games to play. MMORPGs (I'd pretty much play a new free to play mmo every week) and ps2. Later xbox 360 and call of duty, then going back to PC gaming to play shooters. Sometime around the late 2010s I got back into the idea of just chilling with a controller at the PC. While I still play some shooters and serious games (Ready or Not, Arma 3, and other experiences) I don't have a lot of time to fully enjoy them. So story games I can just save whenever are great. Arcady games and rogue likes are nice in theory, but in practice repetitive gameplay is difficult for me. But I picked up Pokemon Black after hearing so many good things, as well as the 3DS ones. It's really hard to convince myself to play it though. I have a LOT of games, so that's true for any one game, but Pokemon just doesn't hold me like it once did. Except the nostalgic ones. Personally, the newer ones (Switch mainly) don't feel like pokemon games without that 2d ish style. Even the 3ds ones feel like an extension of the old style from Ruby
about the TH-cam weird policy with your childhood videos, have you ever thought of displaying the year of the video while it's playing? Maybe it could help
Great video! I forced myself to enjoy Fantasia as it was the third Genesis game I owned after Altered Beast and Sonic. It was uhh, really bad. But Infrogrames DID publish Alone in the Dark, which was excellent in its day.
I had sewer shark. It was kind of cool, but it’s like one of those games where you’re just guessing which way to turn. Also had surgical strike and the cinematic Dracula. These games were weird and hard to make it through. Also had a weird boxing game in black and white that wouldn’t work right on the second or third disc.
Boy howdy. Those are some rough games. I am happy to say I never owned any of those except for Pokemon Blue which I loved to pieces as well. I loved it so much I finished the game, caught all 150, and even picked up a Gameshark back in the day to get Mew. Such great memories of battling with my brother with his red version and trading and moving the pokemon onto Pokemon stadium and seeing them battle in 3d. We were wowed. Haha
You know, I'm sure if your Dad saw you raid in WoW and conquer Ragnaros in Molten Core or Nefarian in Blackwing Lair, he may have been able to like it. Because the game may not have an "end" but it kind of does if you defeat the currently available content. Then anything new afterwards is like an awesome update. But I definitely understand why he never liked it lol
My dad hates pay-to-win and the only fighting games he is okay with playing are Super Smash Bros. (he's intimidated by long combos and complex inputs). Dad also avoids games where you can easily cramp your hands by doing ridiculous control inputs. But he does like racing games, LEGO games, business simulators and DOOM and he dabbles a bit in Pokémon as well, given that it involves wireless battles and he has a solid team ready. He is also fine with the Star Fox games' multiplayer, even though I am the best player in my family by far.
That infamous Conan NES game, so bad, it even made it into an AVGN episode. Also, I didn't knew there was a Fantasia game, and now I know why I didn't knew about it.
I absolutely hate rpgs but the two games I played that were rpgs was Pokémon for Gameboy and Definitely W.O.W. since 1994 the release of Warcraft 1 and I still play it till this day. Doing Classic.... again.
my parents game memories in my head is just them locking up the tv and consoles or fridge for dummb 50s thinking. they had me super late in their lifes
Fantastic video, Tyler, as usual...i recently played Sewer Shark on my MD Mini 2 and i didnt find it that offensive but, yep, FMV gaming wasnt the future...specially at such low resolution and horrible compression quality....
My brother and I had vastly different tastes but he was the person who got me into gaming ha ah ha. He would constantly poop (not literally) on my tastes as they developed 😅
you were so fortunate to grow up with a dad who loved videogames and fostered that love with you. my dad was mostly a jerk growing up and we never got along, as time went on he became more and more of a videogame Nazi. i hate my dad but i still love videogames.
Anything turn based i hate it gives me anxiety, i like to be in control of my player at all times if its action rpg id play it but thats as far as it goes…I know theres a lot of good games im missing out on but hey thats me…Bring on more Zelda games 🙏🏽I’d say Fantasia would have to be the best from Dads worsts picks
That’s why I prefer Elder Scrolls style RPG. You get to explore freely but you still get all the RPG elements. Turn based was fun when I was younger. Sometimes turn based is alright if the story is really captivating like an old dungeon crawler, but overall I agree they feel to limited.
Man…WE WOULD LOVE to see some crash&bash content on games that actually suck from your perspective, Tyler! Please do some future entertainment on some comedy with sorry video games lol
The game you promote seems like something I would really hate. Agree with most your dad didn't like. I think Sewer Shark is pretty good though. Virtual Hydlide is really weird, but I enjoyed completing it.
Ill never forget the time my poor income family got a sega. We played it for a few months then sony released the Playstation. At the time the Playstation I belive sold for $200 dollars. That was a lot of money back in the 90s. My dad brought this game home for us one day. My dad was a truck driver and to make up for all the time he was on the road he would bring back a game for us. One day he brought home grand theft auto for PS1. Needless to say when we played it he heard the vocals of the pedestrians and said "What the Fck did that just say?" Our response was but dad you bought it for us?!? He told us well just dont let your mother hear that game turn the volume down.. What a Legendary father 😂😂
R.E sewer shark.. my dad was exactly the same when he bought me the mega cd on release and realised how cobra command played ( " Tanks in the canyon, drive em out")... It shows how crappy it was when his favourite game was sol feace. Although I didn't admit it as a sega fanboy I was very happy I had talked my younger brother into asking for a SNES around this time 😂.
I would agree with his list 95%, except for Pokemon. I also don't like cute-bubbly anime stuff, but I played the heck out of Red version on my Purple GB Color back in 1998 when i was 16. In fact about a couple of months ago my 11 year old kid wanted to try it out and played it through on GB Emulators on his Nintendo DSi and loved it.

Holy crap Trevor McFur looks like a space shooter from Action 52... Wait, is he one of the Cheetahmen?!
If you're able to one day
Definitely a video I will do in the future
Wow, I had that SAME yamaha keyboard when I was a little kid, you were playing the demo song with 16 beat selected
Cheers!
Great comment. Appreciate you sharing that story about your Dad and Marble Madness.
I love hearing your dad’s point about why he hates certain games and his reasons why 😂
Wish I could provide that for you. I do…
I agree with him on role playing online games. They're so boring and popular. Why were they so popular?!?
The awesome blossom - there is an onion blossom at Outback Steakhouse. I thoroughly enjoyed the awesome blossom. I remember the ads in the mail that would give a free awesome blossom with the purchase of two entrees.
I get it. He hates Pokémon because the visors and graphics but kids like us we like to do it doesn’t matter about the graphics and stuff but dads are different.
Man seeing that Babbages store in the mall really took me back. A lot of our SNES/Genesis purchases were from there when I was growing up.
the opening clip lmao... ur dad had that vision, its honestly so funny how ahead of his time he is. "oh i know" then that face 🤣
Dude your Dad was the real first youtuber!, I enjoy ur videos a lot!
This thumbnail of seeing Pokemon Blue as being hated breaks my heart 🤣
Great vid!
12:36 "Boy is he talented or what?"
Man your dad was a great man. I don't know why I found that just so cute and funny.
I wish I had those cool memories recorded like you :) unfortunately just few photos and memories in my head. Great job with those videos man
Pokemon Blue is a surprise to me!
It's funny you mention Infogrames. The brand was recently revived by whatever iteration of Atari exists now, which used to be Infogrames.
I bought Pokémon Red and Blue on the same day and gave one to my best friend. I was 15 then and we’re still friends. We were quietly obsessed with Pokémon 😂 💪🏾
I always try to get my dad to try roleplaying games since he hates most online games, but he always says
"it sounds boring, just running around doing whatever you want. What's the goal?"
Me: "Whatever you want!"
"Boring."
LOL!
Dad seems like the coolest dude ever
I still love pokemon. I played red version more, but my favorite was silver version I spent so much time there it helped me when my dad passed away to get threw life 😊 🎉last game he ever bought me still remember like yesterday 😢 thankyou dad 💪💯🫡🙏✨️👌
That’s funny! My stepdad doesn’t play video games, but he loved sewer shark. I remember he would just walk into my room and say. “ put in the sewer shark” 😂🤣😂…. yeah, it’s not a good game
Sometimes you need some grbge entertainment to cleanse the palette
I wish i had a dad like yours Tyler may he RIP 🙏💙
Thanks bro
@@MyRetroLife I have the biggest respect for you Tyler bro you’ve made me cry sadness and happy tears so many times you have a great way of telling amazing story’s 😊👊
Awesome you have so much footage from your young days and all i don't have anything of my family but a few pictures. Great man im happy for you to have all those memories. You said your dad didn't like RPG games im just curious is mario rpg a exception? Im sure you had it back in the day . I was in seventh grade when Pokemon GB game's cane out too i think thats when Mario rpg cane out 96 or 97
Great video Tyler, I wonder why Bubsy didn't make the list??? ☺
I used to own those Ghostbusters bed covers as a child too... LEGENDARY!
Interesting idea! Might try it. Thanks
I can remember coming downstairs at night back in the day because a sound woke me up, it was just my dad in the living room swearing at sewer shark.
It was always disappointing to find out that a Sega CD was FMV instead of a real video game.
100% agree with your dad about World Of Warcraft. I have tried numerous times to like it, but it just not my thing. Thanks 4 the video.
Biggest smile I've had all day Frosty...Never give up 💪🏼
Haha
I don't like RPG and I don't like Pokemon. I would have like to meet your dad. He sounds like a really good person.
I know what it's like losing your Dad at such s young age. I'm sorry. I miss my Dad every day and I know you miss yours too. :(
I remember loving Fantasia, thought it looked like playing a real cartoon which was mind-blowing at the time.
I like Trevor McFur... I even bought the 50th Atari Collection for it. LOL
I loved FMV games, still do. I love the cheesiness. Games like Off-World Intercepter, Steel Harbinger, and Total Eclipse were among my favorites.
i agree, they make the best light gun games; lethal enforcers, mad dog mcree, and also hologram time traveler is cool as well.
Like learning about dad he was a cool guy. If you don't mind my asking what did he do for a career?
Thank you for the videos!
My pleasure!
The dialogue in those FMV games were so bad, I still remember what my brain looks like from rolling my eyes so hard at the delivery
I feel personally attacked that your dad hated Blue version 🤣
Best vids ever gave game channel thumbs up every time
Thanks man! I appreciate it
We love your content, Tyler.
We didn’t have much growing up but my dad made sure we had a game system
Man…WE WOULD LOVE to see some crash&bash content on games that actually suck from your perspective, Tyler! Please do some future entertainment on some comedy with sorry video games lol
I ate too much of an awesome blossom and got sick back then, I didnt realize that was a common thing 😂
Your awesome. I’m have 12 year and I imagine your happness playing video games in the golden era
Could you kindly provide the music credits of the music playing when you talk about Sewer Shark? Thanks!
The game you promote seems like something I would really hate.
Agree with most your dad didn't like. I think Sewer Shark is pretty good though. Virtual Hydlide is really weird, but I enjoyed completing it.
I can only hope that my kids idolize me like u do your father seemed like a good man
i have world record speedrun of fantasia
I remember playing that tailspin game while drinking hawaiian punch and got the WORST stomach ache EVER!!
Man this was a good laugh. I haven’t played any of these games with the exception of SEWER SHARK,thank goodness!😂
Tale Spin! I loved the show. I was also the prime target audience for that show.
SEGA of America: " Hey, lets be the biggest a holes bc we can be. " SEGA of America: *Packs Sewer Shark with Sega CD *
I would agree with his list 95%, except for Pokemon. I also don't like cute-bubbly anime stuff, but I played the heck out of Red version on my Purple GB Color back in 1998 when i was 16. In fact about a couple of months ago my 11 year old kid wanted to try it out and played it through on GB Emulators on his Nintendo DSi and loved it.
the awesome blossom was great. Your dad sounds like a legend.
Your dad don't like grinding so was my dad. My dad liked real time strategy games like dune, command and conquer, StarCraft, etc.
I agree with dad 100%
Have you done top 10 games your Dad loved? It looks like from your videos you had a great childhood.
Perfect length video to wait for this Elden Ring update on my PS5. You play elden ring Tyler?
