    Most servos have an odd number of splines. If, when a servo is centred using a servo checker, the servo arm is not at 90 degrees try removing the servo arm, rotate it 180 degrees then retry on the servo. You usually find this gives a closer result.

    This is not just for beginners. If one learns to do something poorly or just wrong, going back to basics (or learning from someone who truly understands the right way) can correct those errors.

    Well explained starter setup. Advanced steps such as top/bottom hinge and cross linkage setup for high performance ships would need a video in itself. The horn eyelet placement is critical for precision tuning.

    Traditional to fixed wing? 😍. I have been doing RC, fixed wing for 50 years 😍. That is traditional for me.

    One detail i did not see mentioned is about play in the link. For example volantex includes push rods that are to thin for the holes in there own included ruderhorns resulting in play . Even with the metal clevis as shown on this model using a aditional nut to lock the clevis on the pushrod reduces play a little. Another detail that should have been included is to make sure the servo is located in a position so the pusrod is at 90 deg of the hinge. This makes sure all the force is used to move the controll surface and is not trying to push it sideways.

    Nice video Lee.
    One of the biggest issues I see is that not a lot of the kits come with recommended throws. Traditional kits always tend to have them, and some FPV plane manuals (e-Wings, Strix, and StealthWings off the top of my head) have recommended throws. But most of the popular kits from China never even mention them.
    This can cause major problems, especially with new pilots. I have seen people asking why they keep on crashing, then show a video where the control surfaces are moving 25mm in each direction.
    Recommending throws would be something very simple to add to the manuals, if the manufacturers have test flown their models. I think this is a reason why we see a lot more with custom foam guys like Arthur and Greig. We see videos of them testing potential future kits, and during those tests, they’ll get a pretty good idea about what throws work well. So adding them to the manual is a no-brainer.
    I know that sometimes manufacturers come to you for advice. For example SonicModell with the AR Wing Pro. I was just hoping that going forward, one of your recommendations could be to add recommended throws to the manuals of all their planes.

      It is an excellent point. I always contact the manufacturer of any model that doesn't come with CG and throw detail in the manual. With some makers like ZOHD and Sonicmodell I'm pretty happy that they've setup the throws mechanically to give you what you need at 100% travel but that isn't always the case.
      The custom/boutique models are more aimed at experienced builders but I can speak from experience that CG and throws is something that e-Wings test extensively. I did feedback to Greig at e-Wings on a couple of these points so that the detail is easier to find and explicit in the manual. Having things on the webpage but not in the manual just confuses builders. I'm pleased to say that he addressed all of the feedback I gave him so the manual for things like the new Vortigaunt also includes things like the recommended battery too..
      If I'm in doubt then I'll set it to about 15-20mm throw and then add dual or triple rates to the radio so that I can dial it back if it is too much. I always mention the CG and throws I use in the videos I make now as sometimes the manuals are wrong too!
      I'll keep sharing the CG and throw placement in my reviews..

      @@Painless360 you make some nice points there Lee. And while I’d agree that ZOHD/SonicModell may set up their models with decent throws in most cases. These models can also be bought as kits, without servos. So there is never really a reason not to include throws in the manuals, just to cover all bases.
      The dual and triple rates is also a good idea. Again, this is something that someone new or only with FC experience may not have heard of. But really a receiver only option, unless you set the rates up in iNav its self or fly in manual while tuning the throws.
      But still, it’s nice to see that you are also pushing for this too. I totally agree that the throws should be in a manual if provided, not just on a web site. Having them in both locations would be perfect.

    Thank you, this video has come out at the perfect time, as I've just finished building a AR WING PRO, using a f35FC. Just to clarify setting reflex on this plane is supposed to be done physically using the linkages and horn position is that right? Thanks again for your awesome videos they are so much help.

    Very informative video Sir ... I have a couple questions . What is your opinion of the clip on or other designed aileron deflection gauges ? I have tried various methods in the past and not fond of any of them . Also the various pull pull wire gauges that should be used to make our own length rods . At what point is an aluminum servo arm needed ? I have digital , all metal gear servo’s and they include plastic throw arms . I’m assuming the more expensive the project . The more expensive the hardware . Lastly what size components did you use on this fantastic looking wing ? As always Thanks Sir ....

      I tend to use a straight edge and the Mk.1 eyeball for setup. If it looks right it probably is (with a little experience). Check out the build of this model in the series for all of the parts.. Happy flying

    Furthermore what is the difference is min/max and rate?

      There is a maximum of 1000 PWM values between 1000 and 2000 microsecond pulses that servos use to position. If you only use 30% of them then you only have 300 vs 1000 positions the servo can be in for control making the control less granular.

    Great Video Lee and I just watched it for the second time. I have a set of Max mini servos and tested 3 of them for amount of movement in each direction and all 3 move significantly more in one direction. is there anything one can change in the servo to correct this? test was done with only the servo connected directly to the RX. No trims on my radio. Yes I need to get a servo checker.

      Did you start with the servo arm at 90 degrees to the servo body? If you are using a single arm horn and it wont sit at 90 degrees to the servo body when your tx is centred then try a four arm horn, one of the horns will almost certainly line up, they each have a different alignment with the splines.
      The servo has a particular linear arc between its end points and can't really have differential as I understand it.

    Is it better adjust the servos by linkages or by Inav...what is the priority?
    And how much Can I adjust the servo via Inav? normally is 1500....what is the good range?

      Adjusting mechanically would be the best way then dial it in by limiting travel in the radio/flight control software. That way you preserve as much of the resolution that the servo is capable of.

    For eleveons, is the maximum throw specified in the manual with full elevon deflection, when both roll and pitch are deflecting an elevon to the max at the same time? I am new to fixed wings, coming from copters🙂

      That is pretty much spot on. You may need a little trimming when you get it flying. The CG can be tricky to get unless you are using a heavy battery. Adding an action camera (as it was designed) can help. See my AR Wing PRO videos..

    Wouldn't you also increase expo a bit if you move the linkage down? Now where it gets interesting is that a exp curve will not neutralise a cosine curve, supposing a linear relationship between surface angle and effect.

    I have found that the two servos that came with my AtomRC Dolphin behave in a very asymmetric way. Is this an indication that one is faulty, or should I simply adjust the control rod to compensate for the difference?

      If the link geometry looks good with the 90 degree angle between the push rod and servo arm when the control surface is in a neutral position, but the throws are wildly uneven... I'd check the servo is OK

      @@Painless360 Physically, each side is even, but I had to set the weights to really odd numbers to get even movement on each control surface. There's a 25% weight difference between the two.

    I recently got a zohd drift and i'm trying to setup ailerons on a single channel instead of one per servo. By default the inav mix for airplane without rudder sets it to one per servo. Does anyone know of tutorial for doing this? The drift comes with a splitter cable so i assume this is a better way. Am i correct or is either way fine?

      Simply plug the y cable into one of the aileron outputs configured in INAV. Best of luck
