- A very detailed explanation of how to take down an iBook G4. The unit used in this video is the PowerPC G4 1.33 Ghz with the 12" LCD. Some of the other models are slightly different.

I've been watching you for years for the old computers, and just now recently got into old ibooks and needed to take one apart, and who else would be #1 recommended but you. thank you.
At times I have had to drill them out. You can also use a backwards bit made for removing stripped screws.
work in a computer store, and one day my boss digs one of these out of the pile of laptops customers didn't pick up, or were too far broken to replace. Needed a new hard drive. thought "oh that's simple for a lap top"... No. if I ever find the person who designed this.. I will stab them with my flat head screw driver. lol thank you for the video, I don't think I could have easily done it without you. Great work man, great work.
Hi David! I know this video is ancient, but thank you SO MUCH for making it - just got an old iBook G4 today, and your guide helped tremendously with installing a new hard drive, I don't know if I could have done it without your help. Those snaps above the CD drive are absolutely terrible, I think I slightly dented the whole line trying to get it off, but a small price to pay for storing things. Thank you again, your guide is still helping people 10 years later! :)
I’ve just removed a hard drive using this very good guide. Can’t believe the number of screws and heavy duty build. Really useful video.
David thanks for the excellent teardown video it was very useful as I just had to remove the hard drive from one of these for a customer who was recycling the machine but wanted the drive back. The model I had was slightly different because it had an Airport card. The teardown was so much fun I ended up stripping the computer down to bare frame. I’m a certified Apple Tech working at an AASP in New Hampshire and have been watching your channel for a long time.
I recently bought this exact model iBook G4 from Amazon, I want to learn as much about it as possible and you seem to know a lot about computers. Thank you so much for posting these videos, they have really helped a lot! Subscribed!
lol
god bless the people who had to fix these back in the day...
@wings400 - yes.. I have a brand-new Mac Mini that I do my video editing on.
This video and an iFixit page helped so much last night. Thanks David!
I just got an iBook G4 for $70 and my first thought was "I should put a SSD in this bad mutha!"
$12 for a m.2 SSD to 2.5" PATA IDE adapter on Amazon, 256GB SATA m.2 SSD, and your video. That's what I'll need. Thank you for this, 11 years later.
cool the ibooks look really well built
Thank you! Definitely could have taken the old G4 apart to get at the hd without you! A real community service!!!
THANKS! You are good at it, really helped me out :D :D Keep on posting more about the G4, i just purchased one recently and i am really happy to have it
lol
+SkyFire Comment Posted 3 Months Ago. ''I just purchased a G4 recently and am really happy to have it'' I'd be throwing that obsolete piece of garbage in the trash. You cant do anything with it anymore, all the programs are old and obsolete. 1 word sums up the G4. Obsolete.
+SouthPark634 You are one piece of work are you? I am an IT technician, ofcourse there is third party software for it to make it better and run today, i use it for school now using LibreOffice, i have it dual-boot with Linux Mint and i can play youtube videos smoothly. It also works with my wireless printer. I still have use for it so shut the fuck up and see for yourself, i bet you didn't even tried it.
+SouthPark634 This comment wasn't regarding for you but for the man in the video, mind your business
SkyFire Then why don't you not post this comment publicly, where everyone can see it, and instead send it in a PM, but trust me, if you want an old laptop, just get the 1st gen macbook, it's like the G4 but far better in terms of processing and programs it can run.
I worked in my university's student computer repair shop when I was in school back in the 2000s and early 2010s. Successfully pulling off an HDD replacement in one of these without help from one of the more experienced techs was a pretty serious merit badge.
THANKS you helped me a lot. This is one of the most hard to disassemble computer
great videos! have enjoyed quite a few of em, even your old electric car and your S-video install on that old system :)
Very informative!
I was doing this by myself until getting those clips made me frustrated enough to look for help haha
Great video! Very high quality and helpful as well. :)
Good job man, Keep up the good work David.
awesome video very informational and accurate its always fun watching the videos you make!! thank you for this video:)
I used this to disassemble ones hinges on a donated iBook G4 for poor children...thanks up-loader! 1st Mac I ever worked on~: )
How wise would it be to cut a portion out of the RF shielding cover for later easier access to replace/upgrade the drive? I think I read or saw someone else do this and it seemed like a good idea.
excellent video. perfectly timed and easy to understand and crucial tips given without and tech jargon
I recently bought an ibook G4 off ebay. I noticed it would get really hot, especially around the lower left hand side. This video confirmed that the source of the heat is the hard drive. I bet it would run a lot colder with an SSD.
I do have G4FanControl, a Mac OS X program that lets you manually set the threshold for when the fans activate. I also have a laptop cooling pad that isolates it from your lap and places a big fan underneath, so that helps.
But at some point I am going to have to open it up, because the hard drive is only 30 GB anyway, and I like to run three different OSs on all my machines. For example, on my main desktop, where I'm typing this, I have Windows 10 and Red Hat Fedora Linux 28. I plan to put FreeBSD on here eventually. :)
This helped me alot. unfortunately i have let people try to fix my laptop for me but they never were able to achieve it and never told me why. So after I watched this video I see now that there are screws missing and let me tell you that is now my new pet-peeve !!!
great vid, very well-explained
Just replaced the hard drive in an identical iBook G4 using this video! Thanks!
Where did you get the operating system from? I am about to replace the hard drive on mine but idk how i would go about installing the os. thanks.
Thank you a lot! This is the exact model I'm trying to repair!
Thank you so much this really helped. Excellent tutorial
Thank you for this, I couldn't figure out how to get the paneling off.
So that much work just to replace the HDD. Gotta love Apple Design :))
Meanwhile I can almost take apart my Thinkpad T61 blindfolded. I still love Mac OS X, but don't like how desktops and laptops no longer have user serviceable / upgradeable parts. Great video, I still have a G4 to play around with, and may need to upgrade HDD.
tswiftshipper
I have 3 Thinkpads: A T410 that my wife uses, a E335 that I use as a companion for my desktop and a T530 I use for work. They are all serviceable and can be easily upgraded. If there would be no wi-fi / 3g modem restriction, that would be great but the parts are readily available so no biggie.
White MacBooks from 2006 < are MUCH easier to deal with!
I have several...
Just got a 2004 iBook 1.33 14"
$35.40 on eBay.
SourceForge TenFourFox browser plays TH-cam...
See: PPC LUDDITE BLOG..
Watched SpaceX Falcon HEAVY launch today....
SCi-Fi shorts...
Pretty good for a 14 year old machine..

You are keeping track of those screws every time you work on them, right?
Thanks! Had to bust this video for a customer today :)
+10 points for an excellent video. Only thing I would request is timestamps in the description for the different steps.
Awesome video, can you also post a video on how to change or repair the hinge and how to replace the screen? Thanks
high quality teaching video,thanks again.
Could you also do a detailed one for a iBook G3 snow model? I'm having a hard time finding a detailed video just like this for those models.
Very helpful thanks .
Are the screws the same size on the top RFI shield? Or are they all different sizes?
Great video! :)
What were the labels that you put on each of the screw boxes? Thanks for the video!
Very helpful video for me , because I have the 14 " LCD
you have such high quality videos, I wish you would get more views.
I own an Ibook G4 1.44 14". Since I bought it I was wondering why the keyboard build a gap on the upper side. Now I know why. Thanks I never had imagined that the numlock LED also is a screw.
Good work! Thanks!
Great Video
Can I install a universal mobo on G4 Aluminium Power Book? Why I'd prefer Linux or Android OS.
For that hard drive, can I just pull out the adapter with my fingers or do I really need to use a flat screwdriver?
great video!!! thank you brother.
2:06 is when the teardown starts for all who want to just watch.
4:32 to skip the next long talk.

Thank you
I'm adding it to my favorites and I'm going to like it
any info on getting to the power supply receptacle inside?
i have to keep pressure on the adapter plug in order for the machine to start and stay running. thanks!
I now this is an old video, but I didn't see why the bottom cover had to come off. It looked as if everything you did with the hard drive, etc., was from the top (keyboard) side. What would you need to address from the bottom side?
Excelente Video, me re sirvio, Gracias!!!
Ah the year 2012, the year I was addicted to the Elder Scrolls V Skyrim and downloading and testing mods for it. it also seems to be the year you got a new camera to record your videos with considering this video is so pixilated compared to the next one you uploaded
great video!
Would it be safe to use an allen key instead of a torx driver? I don't have any T8 or T9s to use.
satisfying video
I cannot believe that! Looks much simpler than iFixit or official Apple manual. Especially those 3 socketed cables.(iFixit guide renders them almost impossible to remove without damaging connector)
Also no DC-In Board removal? Not necessary?
Found one of these in a bin today...turns on and goes into OS all good but getting it to turn on sometimes doesnt work.
that was the easyest keyboard removal i have ever seen
@latinoalex5 I think you only need one disc, i've never had to input a key for the mac os whenever i have reinstalled. and i don't believe you get a key so yea...
Thank you so much
Would you know of a way to fix a "drooping" battery on an ibook g4? Also, do you know of anyone who could repair/replace caps on a Powerbook 145b?
I have an iBook G4 14 inch Mid 2005 where are all RAM Modules on the topside are missing. They are not soldered out, they never were soldered in. The systems tells an error of the build in RAM and only 256MB are recognized by POST-Test. Do you know of machines with this manufacturing failure? The systems runs great with no errors instead of the POST-Error message in system profiler. AHT says everything but the ammount of memory is all right. Greetings.
Do you think your could do a similar video for snow iBook G3s?
I just bought an iBook G4 used. And it looks like its disk drive isnt working. I trued to insert the os x install disk but it scratched the surface of the install disk
Use a blow dryer to heat up the plastic. Less chance of cracking
Hey bro do you sell stuff for iBook G4? I need the 3 "feet" and the screws and the metal housings you mention at 2:18 and I also need the battery springs. And btw can it all be disassembled and assembled agian and will it look like normal, like it hasn't been disassembled or anything...
DA CASTRO very nice done !
I don't know if you still monitor this. I'm trying to lift the keyboard. The lock button is missing, and it is in the lock position. How do I unlock it?
Love the video thanks I hope that you get 100000000000000000 likes
Informative => Thanks =>works fine :-)
i have that... but keyboard is not working... do you have a tutorial on how to fix it?
I have a question , I can't feel the fan from the iBook and my is going to get warm iBook g4. Do you know any FanControll for PPC?
Sorry i'am not good at english, i'am German.
well now I know how to take this apart for when I ever need to take it apart since I actually use it in my daily life as a netbook and not a collection item.
From 6:41 onwards, mine looks completely different & I have no idea how to take the keyboard out! Does anyone have any advice?
do you own any of the newer macs, maybe year built around 2009-2011?
Does anyone know where the larger, rectangular magnet goes?
Hey David, I've Got an iBook G4 (2005 Model, 1.33 GHz) and for some odd reason, when the battery is fully charged, it will shut off randomly, and then when i turn it back on with the charger, it works just fine. Exept the battery will Say its dead or low, i just wanted to know if this is the Battery Or The Charging Board (not logic board) I've taken mine apart to check it all out, nothing is wrong the MotherBoard
GaminGod Coffeeman More than likely, it's the battery...
Is there a hard drive replacement like a CF adapter like 486 computers use? My hard drive is making funny noises
I used this to put a new HD in my old ibook
:)
I just rotated the screwdriver... and it worked
Well This was a disaster. I followed everything up to the point of the power plug. Mine would not lift up like in your film. There is something attached above the cd player. It was great up to that point. I just put it all back together with a few pieces bent out of shape LOL. I really need someone to work on this for me. If your able to let me know.
In the intro clip are you using the g4's webcam?
no. the g4 doesn't have a webcam
I didn't say that, but actually it is. On a normal laptop you unscrew 2-4 screws and either open th hatch or pull from the side. Done. On most desk tops you need to lug it out, open the side panel, unplug it, unscrew it from the frame, and then guide it out. Laptop is easier, unless it's something crazy like this one.
how to you remove a hex screw if it is stripped
As a warning, my iBook had hidden screws underneath the metal covering over the bottom of the motherboard. You can't remove the top casing until they are removed
i need a mother board g 4 for mac, somebody have one!! thank you.
Would putting in a 7200 rpm IDE drive be worth all the effort?
The existing 4200 rpm 60GB drive is bog slow...
Yes,only more capacity than 120GB.
SSD
so retro :)
are you making an ibook g3 one?
the disassembly without voiceover is like ASMR
It is SO annoying when you open up a machine and it's missing parts or screws. I had a lady give me one of these her son tried to "fix" it took me several months to get it working again (on a budget) was missing about half the screws and didn't even have the upper shield. It's tough finding those odd parts =(
Thanks man
What is the limit of the Harddrive ?
can you fix my ibook g4 the battery wont charge
the art work is
mega hertz! dont hear that one much anymore
Do you ever come across any Xserves?
@The iBookGuy I am looking to purchase a IBook G4 for my elderly grandmother. Where can I contact you for business?
He no longer sells laptops unfortunately.
Cool!!!
CAN THE G4 HOLD A 80GB HARDDRIVE
