    My first Mac was a 14" iBook G4 @ 1GHz / 640MB / 60GB HDD purchased in November 2003. It felt like something from the future. I did everything on it -- iMovie, Keynote, iPhoto, iWork... your video today brought back so many happy memories of it. Thank you!

      Glad to hear it! I’m still looking to add an iBook G4 to my collection at some point! Maybe I’ll make a video about it too!

    I have one exactly like yours. I still use it today. When I have to type something important, personal, it's my best option. Great keyboard.!

      I also have this same model as well. However, I prefer to type on the last Black and White G3 PowerBook the model with two Firewire 400 ports (smile...smile).

    The 12" PowerBook G4 was actually the one that convinced me to switch to the Mac in 2004, although I ended up getting an iBook G4 for cost reasons. I've become a diehard obsessive Apple fan ever since then. That was a truly special time in the tech world.

    🥹 my first Mac was the 12" PowerBook and I even used FCP on it to cut an indie feature (SD DV ofc)

    Nice video! I still rock my 2004 12" PowerBook 1.33GHz and use it to digitize composite video when the rare need arises. Regarding the soldered RAM, I don't know when Apple started it but I do know that my first Mac, a Performa 6116CD from 1996 had 8MB soldered on the board with the option to add additional RAM on top of it. Also, since Halo was destined for the Mac (and Windows) before Microsoft bought out Bungie, a once prolific Mac developer, I wouldn't feel too awkward about using a Mac to play Halo :-D.

    Great video, and one of my favorites as well. The one downside that was terrible was the serviceability, no way should they have buried the HD like that. Still it was an improvement over the iBook and g4 ti design. For old ones prob still give the nod to the Pismo.

    USB 2 is only faster than FW400 on paper because the speeds are only negotiated by the host. With FireWire, both devices control the speed and that produces very near actually 400Mbps vs USB 2's ~200 or so.

    I also have a 2005 12-inch PowerBook G4. I upgraded it to the 1.25 GB RAM maximum, but the previous owner installed a 128 GB mSATA SSD, which I installed Sorbet Leopard onto.
    My favourite laptop is probably my early 2008 first-gen MacBook Pro, which I named "Steve Martin" as a reference to the 1983 sci-fi comedy The Man With Two Brains, as I once installed a second SSD in the optical drive bay (I ultimately removed the second SSD and reinstated the optical drive, as the second SSD ran slow and buggy through the IDE/ATA optical drive bus).
    I love the first-gen pre-unibody MacBook Pros because they have the same hefty but sleek case design as the PowerBook G4, but are far easier to work on and have more advanced internals.
    This MacBook Pro is in excellent condition, with a bright, clear screen and minimal scratches or smudges, and I upgraded it with a 500 GB 850 EVO SSD (dual-booting Snow Leopard and Mojave, so it still runs in the spirit of The Man With Two Brains), 6 GB of RAM, a three-port AirPort Extreme card from a 2007 MacBook Pro and an SDXC Expresscard.
    I'm not sure which of my vintage Macs is my favourite: Steve Martin, my glowing, NVMe, RX 580-equipped 2010 Mac Pro, my 1 TB, 64 GB 2013 trashcan Mac Pro, my mSATA iMac G4 and my 13-inch mid-2012 MacBook Pro (it's just such a solid and easily-upgradeable machine) are all contenders.

    love this computer so much, 00’s tech is just my favorite thing in the world; from gamecube to the ipod to this era of macos devices(which imo this is the definitive example of), windows xp, etc. while i like my 2020 intel mbp or ps5 there’s just something nice ab a chonky but compact, dense, nice little device
    this laptop is just such a special machine, like you i love compact capable stuff (mine is stock bc i don’t have the stuff to work on it but i have a honda fit), i much much prefer the ipad mini, iphone mini, u get it.
    im so excited to pick mine up tomorrow and i hope it’s in as good of condition as the pictures on offerup make it look because while i did just get a 2007 macbook this looks like its in such nice condition i couldn’t pass it up. a few small dings but no big scratches or marks 😭 i’m sure im overpaying but we agreed on 270 which i just want this bc i will probably never buy another one (biggest tech collectors lie im aware)

    I had this for a while in 2005-2007. Did it have aluminum keys? I remember that they were silver but I can’t remember if they were aluminum or painted plastic. I want to say they were aluminum because they didn’t get scratched, but I honestly can’t remember.

  • @georgetall9280

    Good throwback video. I also played Halo on it! I had a 12" PowerBook G4 and now remember that I upgraded the RAM first to 768MB (256 + 512). I don't recall mine being built like a tank though, the construction of these was nothing like the unibody MBP's. Unibody was a huge structural improvement. I recall also having the "1x superdrive" giving me the ability to produce DVD's which was cool.

    I had the exact same G4 power book, including the extra battery. I loved that computer. Yet I sold it for close to $1000 to get the first Intel MacBook.
    My daughter still uses the 12 inch silver aluminum MacBook, which is extremely thin.

    I had/still have the 2004 version - so the 1.33GHz model released right before this one you have. One small nitpick - you say the PowerBook has a mini VGA port - the 12 inchers were released with that originally, but it was upgraded to Mini DVI, which is what yours has. How am I certain? Because it’s what mine has too. And it came with dongles in the box for connecting to both full size DVI and VGA - which honestly was something I loved because of the efficient compact flexibility!

    • @GarrettCrespo

      I realized that mistake about 3 days after I posted the video. Thanks for clarifying though!

    • @transitengineer
      @transitengineer ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm watching this in my new Asus TUF gaming laptop, I love how fast and powerful this thing is and how Linux makes it better, but I will never forget my PowerBook G4 12". Even if the hard disk didn't last more than two years, even if something weird happened to it and it never turned on again, even if I bought it in Jan 2005 for about $1,500 and I sold it to a friend of mine in 2008 for only 40 bucks when it didn't turn on again, it's probably the best laptop I've had, and I've had like 7 laptops in total.
    But, I will never get an Apple laptop again. Maybe I'll just get one used unit of this exact model from eBay to have it as a nice souvenir of my teenage years.

  • @RodrigoVazquez91

    I love the 12” PowerBook but Getting one in a decent/working condition seems to be impossible in 2023, not to mention , batteries for this particular 12” model are not longer in production, which makes it almost impossible to get.

    12:03 there's no logic there calling the iPad closer than the 12 inch MacBook

    • @GarrettCrespo
      @GarrettCrespo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The logic was that the original PowerBook was a pro laptop with pro performance in a compact form. The iPad Pro seems to aim for the same goal, but it’s limited by software. The 12 inch MacBook is nothing like the PowerBook in any way because it compromised on power, ports, and performance just to be small.

    • @alvzcizzler
      @alvzcizzler ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GarrettCrespo I know but I still think the 12 inch MacBook is overall closer to that PowerBook than the iPad Pro, formfactor and OS but yeah that MacBook was really underpowered and Apple could now bring it back with an M2 or M3 chip but I doubt they will
