  • In this video, I'll walk you through the process of taking apart a 13" plastic Macbook to replace a backlight inverter. Even if you want to just replace an optical drive, airport card, or other part this is still the video for you!

Finally fixing an issue with the monitor hinge. Laptop fell and the top would not close straight. Finally saw how to take the laptop apart and readjust the screws. All better now. Thanks!

Fuckin' hell, laptops are a goddamn nightmare to work with compared to desktops. Having to mess around with all those core components, doing a near full disassembly just to be able to detach a screen! *shudder*

Wish I knew what was wrong with my old MacBook os 10.5.8. Relative staying with me decided to try to upgrade with latest software and not all it does is begin to come on, but ends up after so many minutes shutting down and restarting in a vicious circle and yet not ever starting.

    • @westbrk4886
      @westbrk4886 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Judi Calhoun sounds like a buggy version of the OS or it’s not compatible(most likely this is the case). If you still have your OS 10.5.8 disk, put it in the optical drive and hold the option key when turning it on. You should get two options, one being the disc with 10.5.8 installation. Choose that and reinstall Mac OS. Hope this helps!

At 3:35, as he slides out the hard drive, black rubber/plastic guides come into view.
Mine became partly detached so I was unable to slide a drive into the machine.
I oponed up the machine as shown here (except my keyboard/upper facia was very brittle and stubborn even though I had removed all screws, so the left/right edges broke/crumbled).
I pulled the partly detached black rubber/plastic guides off completely, leaving some glue/stick tape residue.
Has anyone tried using superglue/strong mulitipurpose bond to re-attach these guides?
Did it melt the black rubber/plastic guides?
Did you use general parts cleaner (usually intended for use on vehicles) on cloth/cotton buds to remove the residue left on the machine?
    Any problems?
Any guides for a person who forgot to label/store each screw separately as he took it out? (Whoops).
    Thanks.
    EDIT 1
Once the optical drive is removed, is there any reason to put it back if you now use an O/S installed from USB?
Will leaving any of its connectors unattached cause any booting issues/malfunctions?
    Thanks.
    EDIT 2
Is the backlight inverter the part whose failure causes my screen to flciker a little?
    Thanks,

@Dell0304 - Those are probably just pressure damage spots. They are more visible on a solid color background. When you get some picture or pattern on the screen our eyes can't differentiate the darker spots. There's nothing you can really do besides replace the LCD panel. If it doesn't bother you too much, just leave it alone. It won't get any worse unless the screen gets a lot of pressure applied somewhere. (even from the back side)

I poured a glass of water into my MacBook I always keep on the floor next to my lazyboy. (I thought it looked thirsty). After pulling power and shop vacuuming I let it set and then used a hairdryer. The next day I powered it and got a color light show.. followed by normal operation! Thought I dodged a bullet. I was wrong. 3 days later I got the chime followed by the "gray screen of death". I've since replaced it with a white late 2008 in mint condition I found for $45. Before I toss it in the trash.. I thought I would pull it open and see whats in there.. Your vid is just what I needed! nice job! good quality video! Guess there will be lots of good parts if nothing else - and this screen and light board is perfect. May need a new MOBO.. we shall see.. :-) - thanks for posting.

Good video.. thanks. I use a smudger as find a screwdriver is more apt to scratch if you hand slips. The plastic smudgers are cheap and often dollar stores have them in a kit or ebay. I use a magnetized screwdriver as it's so easy to lose the weeny teeny screws. With a magnetic screwdriver it is less easy to drop them as they are near impossible to find once dropped. I use a pill reminder box that is always in dollar stores for compartmenting the loose screws.

Is there a way that you can clean the front and back of this motherboard.? I took part of mines apart and I dipped a toothbrush in alcohol and then clean part of the erosion off and then wiped it with a lint free cloth but I can't figure out how to get to the back of the motherboard to clean it and idk where else to clean because I'm not gonna lie I know your not supposed to cut it on but i did try to cut it back on to see if it worked and it actually cut back on perfectly but then it cut off so ikno it's still some erosion somewhere in the computer. maybe you could get to it and I was reading a lot of websites and watching alot of videos and I didn't use water or saturate the board or toothbrush with alcohol cause i didn't want to mess it up.

You don't need to disassemble much on this MacBook to get to the inverter. You can easily pry bezel on the screen. The inverter board should be below the LCD just hanging about. To place the bezel back on, just make sure the tabs are not on the bezel or it will be a pain to put back on. If all or once all the tabs are on the frame the bezel should be an easy snap on... This video went a bit too far. But still nice to watch :)...

I haven't watched the vid yet, but I need to replace the hinges, cover, wifi and camera on this MacBook Air late 2008 early 2009. The hinge problem is no longer covered w/Mac or Apple or whatever they call them selves. I bought the parts on ebay and thought I would try it myself before I pay someone, just in case I CAN do it and learn something too. Anyway, I will let you know when my friend gets here and we will watch your vid on his lap top while I work on this MacBook Air & thanks for letting us know right off the bat about the screws. My daughter gave me this MacBook Air and she had changed the hinges herself and had several screws left over and she never put them back in and said it was harder than she thought it was going to be and suggested I take it to someone who knows what they are doing, but I don't have the money for that. No problem!! All good now! As in, it was purposefully busted up by a mentally unstable person & is NOT repairable. Has to be replaced. But, it was a wonderful laptop that I deeply miss!

Great tutorial. I was able to place an old Macbook screen that had been sitting in my garage for years on my MacBook (that I had not used for years) and WOW it works again. Thanks to your video It was pretty easy. Now, what do I do with a 15-year-old computer?

impressive video. great angles, clear video quality and proper pronunciation! I just HAD to comment on something... you know you're a pro when you separate the screen bezel with a small flat-head! that screwdriver was millimeters from the screen and you pried the bottom off. Kudos for a great video and a skilled technician!

I think the standard MacBook and original MacBook Pro were the best macs ever. Back then apple valued their customers. White, Black, Unibody-White, beautiful aluminum, original unibodies, they were beautiful. Now these retinas disgust me. My main computer is my MacBook that's been upgraded so awesome video.

I have the same macbook and the backlight sometimes goes out when the laptop is moved or the screen is tilted. When this happens i can get the screen to work again by playing with the brightness up/down buttons on the keyboard, but it only works for a couple seconds. is this a backlight inverter issue as well?

I was working with one of these in work and I found them to be really cool when playing around with them. I am going to buy myself one.

they are cheap on ebay, less than $100 for the earlier models. around 300 for the Mid-2010 unibody model, which is the best one to get.

I just received a 2006 model from my niece, who got it as a gag graduation gift a couple years ago, and stuck it on a shelf as the network ability was lacking.

I know this is an old video but I thought I'd ask a question and see how we go. I have one of these machines thats recently died. It powers on, the OS loads (i can hear the volume sounds as I press the buttons) but the screen is all black but I DO have backlight. when I power it on I can see all the pixels on the screen go black and thats all the screen does. It happened while I was watching a TH-cam video and hasn't recovered. Ive researched this issue but haven't found anything online. Would you have any idea where to look or should I just start looking for a replacement board? I know its an old Mac book but I'm a sort of collector and I don't like knowing one of my machines doesn't work, even if it doesn't see much use.

I don’t think you have to remove everything to replace the motherboard

Is it possible to add an SSD/SATA drive to replace the optical drive?
I don't really use CD/DVDs and I was thinking about upgrading my late '07 macbook.
    Would that be possible?

With just step-by-step photos (not a video), I replaced my keyboard / top cover without any trouble (twice actually). Patience and following directions are really all that’s required. So, take heart!

Still a total pain in the ass to disassambl them but at least it's not as horrible as it was with the iBooks.
