Great video, I've been struggling with setting my exposure on my 6k pro so this is something I definitely needed to see. Glad to see that I'm not the only one who feels ISO 3200 is just too noisy, even though it's their stated higher dual native ISO.
Thank you for saying that about ISO 3200 in the BMPCC. I thought I was going crazy, expecting the noise to be cleaned but instead finding worse noise than any other ISO setting! I was furious because everyone on youtube would say that 3200 cleans up the image so well. After a few months of actually using it (and not just revieiwing it for a youtube video) I would say the second Dual Native ISO setting is 1250. Cleans up noise beautifully.
So true man. I essentially stay away from that 2nd ISO tier altogether. Recovering the shadows in ISO 1250 or even the "native 3200" is a nightmare. Thanks for confirming it! I was starting to think maybe it was just my camera or I was doing something wrong.

3200 iso is definitely noisy and I also tend to under expose my image on my 6k Pro. That was purely based on my personal experience. I’m not an expert but it’s good to see that my instincts are leaning in the right direction

One thing I do love on the 6K pro is the articulation of the screen and its brightness, so, some might not like the in-camera Ir filters... I agree, they are off. One does have a choice to not use those filters and go with something like the on-lens Nishi... that's a thought.

Hi Mateo. Thanks for your videos. Is really usefull information for me. I want to ask if you use (or recommend to use) infrared filters with the BMPCC 6K Pro. I see that is a problem to many people. I have good 4x4 ND´s but the don´t have IR cut. Do you recommend a screw IR filter in the lens before my ND in the mattebox? Thanks so much.

I guess what you are saying is that with digital you need to underexpose but you also need to nail the exposure during the shoot using false colours. Because, if for some reason you underexpose and then you need to push the shadows, there is bound to be noise in those dark areas. Thank you.

Have you had a play with the Ursa Broadcast 2? Been told it has the same sensor in as the 6k but slightly better in low light. Surely that would be a perfect middle ground from the 6k and the Ursa 12k?

Hey do you have a recommendation for the the cable between your SSD and the camera?
Could you also use the variable Nisi ND Filter? It is also IR neutral. Actually it should work, so you don't have to carry three nd filters with you?

Don’t get me wrong, I am very picky. Lots of other people are choosing the 6K Pro, but for me those NDs are not that good.

Thanks man, your vids have helped me with my exposure on BMPCC6K. Do you have a rule when its OK to blow out a highlight when a light source is directly in the frame? E.g. the Sun, or a bright headlight? Sometimes it is impossible to avoid without under exposing everything else in the frame. Is it normal to blow out extreme highlights?
Thank you! Yes the sun will always be clipped, same for big light sources. I think it’s generally fine :) a promist filter could help!

What about a Panasonic S1 + Blackmagic Video Assist 12G (BRAW)? You'll get clean ISO 4000 - 6400 and stable footage via IBIS.
Would you mind updating your gear list? It still lists drop-in filters and variable NDs and you've mentioned you don't do that anymore and are using only 3,6,10 stop screw-on filters.
Soooo I should probably start shooting 800 outside instead of 400 ISO on my pocket 6K?

Thanks Matteo, but I don't know with Canon but with the Leica R, it seems to me that all the available adapters do not have AF, nor do they transmit the electronic functions of the camera, right?
I think I can only achieve the latter using a Leica camera and a Leica adapter as well, correct?

Just wondering why the davinci convert doesnt change the middle grey from 38 to 46. Rec709 middle grey should be 46 and I am gettig the 38 also in rec709. Should i increase exposure in-post each time to get 46 but then i intrrouce the noise
Love your teaching and videos. I use the s5 with black magic assist 12g. Would the BMPCC 6k buttery lut work with the assist footage in BRAW. I am really interested in the colour process but starting at h the 709 and tweaking rather than the colour space transform all the time would save a lot of time on projects. Thanks
Hey! I think you should use the S5 LUT. Color science is the Panasonic one, even if the codec is braw ;)

I am really considering moving over to blackmagic cameras, your imagery is so inspiring and I know it is because of your expertise as well as the cameras but love the image out of them. I have always been slightly nervous because I love handheld shooting and always worry about shakey footage. I know you have mastered it but is it easy to overcome without stabilised lenses and gimbals? I’m going to book in with your course. Keep up the great videos. Inspiring and honest. Simon

I've measured this camera as having 9 stops above middle gray when grading with wide gamut, HDR wheels and highlight recovery. So generally I only need 2 stops if nd, 4 in some situations
That depends entirely on your aperture. If you wanna shoot at f/2 you are gonna need 6 or more
@@matteobertoli correct. I mostly open to f/2.8, but some situations might require wider aperture. That being said, the fact that this camera gives me 9 stops above middle gray is pretty remarkable, considering that Kodak 5219 has 9.5 stops above middle gray
Hi Matteo. I wonder your thoughts about the technic that posing one stop over (without clipping) and decrease offset value one stop in post. Do you think it gives better overall image? Thanks…

recently i got bmpcc 6k so what should i pick as my first lens ( Canon 24-105 F4 or Sigma 18-35 )

U mention a few downsides of ETTR like clipping. But is it just me or does the colors become less accurate (lil hazey) when using ettr. Even after pulling down the exposure in post, getting the exposure right immediately just gives me better colors in my opinion.
Depends on the camera. Clog3 loves ettr, blackmagic likes to be right on the money.
Hey! The chroma noise you are talking about was that due to the nd? I am considering buying a second 6k for traveling, and considering going for the pro because of the tilt screen and battery grip. For the nd it’s not a big issue to have a screw on with me. Just want to be sure the image is the exact same 🤓

What about the 4K at ISO 1250, it uses the second circuit and should be clean like 400.

That's the dual ISO issue. You can get a better footage without noise on the higher ISO. For example your 800 ISO footage could have more noise than the one shot at 1600 ISO or 3200.

Try a simple "S" curve in curves.
well... you say, that you prefer the moody shots (perfect, suits you, looks very nice!), but also you say, that it's a safer technique... I'd argue here, that I as a colorist rarely see overexposed images - in general - but also with BM cameras. Much more I see underexposed images on the edge of usability. I'd be careful with such advice.
In my experience, most cameras shooting to any kind of LOG or RAW tend to produce better image, when exposed just right or overexposed a little. Of course it depends on the style and on the scene (very contrasty scenes with deep shadows and main focus on highlights could be easily considered "underexposed"), but still.
Although it's very good to let people know a little bit more about how ISO works (even on dual ISO sensors), as you do. Protect highlights with higher ISO (up to the native or to the usability peak) and lower for more DR in shadows.
Do you still use your matte box sometimes?
Since I have the Ursa I barely use it. I use the Tilta nano matte box way more

1600 to 2500!
if you shoot at iso 1000 its better to just bump up to 1250. The 6k has a dual native iso. Its resets at 1250. 1250 is much less noisy than 1000. 1250 should be the same noise level as iso 125
Please, watch the video. At 1250 the roll off is pure crap and you’ll clip your highlights completely. In daylight at 800/1000 is where you are gonna have the best roll-off and pretty much no noise at all.
The natives are 400 and 3200, but the best shots are at between 800 and 1600 my opinion

@Matteo would you recommend the bmpcc6k over the 4k? Bigger file sizes? Better color? What else? I have a BMPCC OG still a beginner would it make a difference in the end? bmpcc og vs bmpcc4k/6k ? Or just keep the OG buy some good lights and learn to shot good stuff first and upgrade later? What are you thoughts?

Vediamo se mi riesce di scrivere in inglese :D ... We have a Pocket 4K, a Pocket 6K and a Pocket 6K Pro. We see the same blue cast with the ND filters. About the noise... It's difficult to understand if those ND filters cause noise. I have made some tests, and in my opinion is so, but i'm not sure. I have also tried to compare the three cameras (4K, 6K, 6K Pro) with the cap on the lens. It's not a great test, i know... But i saw that Gen 5 is more noisy than Gen 4. If i convert the images of the Pocket 4K from Gen 4 to Gen 5 in Resolve, i see that the 6K Pocket are still noisier. It may be that the ND filters cause even more noise. I will make other tests. I think it's better that the 12k be overexposed, underexposed is far to noisy to be lifted.
If you overexpose the 12K footage you are gonna clip your highlights instantly. Look at the Ursa dynamic range chart. At 800 (native iso) it has way more stops in the shadows than the Pocket. Those shadows are extremely clean and have tons of information. Try and see for yourself ;)
Just bought a Hoya UV-IR filter and nailed the problem with magenta shift. It's old BMD problem with too thin IR filter... So your reason to send it back strange for me. It's great to have internal NDs and 1500 NITS articulated screen, especially if you want to have very light setup on vacation.

Not sure you watched the entire video. The magenta shift is only present with the internal NDs. I never seen any magenta shift in any Blackmagic camera in 9 years. IR filter is easily solved with IRND filters. But the magente shift that the internal NDs cause on the Pro is a different issue from IR pollution.
@@matteobertoli If camera have thin IR filter it will suffer IR pollution. If internal NDs are not IRND this problem will be more noticeable with thickest ND like ND64. All Blackmagic cameras have issues with IR spectrum since old classic Pocket which I own many years ago. Check Shane Hurlbutt's tests, he made many of them. You never noticed this issue because unlike me always used good expensive IRND filters. Old RED cameras have same issue with IR pollution as well.

I always felt like the best of the pocket cams was the 6K. The 4K is noisy even with correct exposure. And the pro is just… I can’t justify that camera. Too much wrong with it. Only reason I kept my 4K is because of the wider field of view with a .71 focal reducer and when you use zoom lenses that have a variable f stop, there’s no more of that! I discovered that with my sigma 8-16mm. It stays at a constant f4 through the zoom. That’s pretty cool. But I might still sell it for another 6K. I’m in between with the pocket 4K.
800ISO for balanced scenes. 10000ISO for scenes with lots of highlights (snow for example) 12500ISO for low light. When you need to go to 32000 - that how you will get the best out of your Blackmagic as expose correctly for ISO every time
In BRAW ISO doesn't matter only in PRORES the only things to keep in mind are: if you want more highlights detail shoot under 1250, 1000 and under is all the same, the only thing that changes is the way you see it on your monitor because you actually know what you are clipping but if you shoot ISO 400 the same amount of data will be there, that's why the "highlight recovery" doesn't do anything at ISO 1000 but at ISO 400 it removes the digital cap, if you don't believe me test it yourself, shoot an scene with a lot of dynamic range at ISO 400 and ISO 1000 then check highlight recovery on the ISO 400 image, it will look the same as the ISO 1000 image as long as you expose for middle gray
Ni. It does matter since you are adjusting your aperture to shoot at a certain ISO. So if I shoot at 1000 and I wanna go 400 in post, I can’t change the aperture and I have to compensate in DaVinci and that will likely affect the image quality since I m moving the gain. So yes, you should get your exposure right on set, even if it’s metadata. When we will be able to change aperture in post, maybe ;)
@@matteobertoli of course and I agree with you, better to get the right exposure on set, just pointing it out because some folks think at ISO 1000 you get more dynamic range in the highlights that's misleading
@@KtmDesignz BlackMagic provides a very useful table regarding ISOs and how the sensor change in dynamic range between shadows and highlights. When you go from ISO 1000 to ISO 1250 you can see a dramatic change in the highlights as Matteo told. What we must know is that if we go ISO 1250 and use a neutral density or 48 fps to maintain same aperture, we can achieve more details in the shadows and preserve highlights.
@@JADURCA again with this argument you don't get "more dynamic range" the 11.8 stops will be there no matter what the only thing that changes is the way you monitor them, just do your tests and stop looking at charts

The exact opposite is right: you underexpose film because it has a better saturation response in the shadows, but you overexpose digital because you have more bits to represent the signal, which leads to more accurate hues, tones and less noise in the shadow. That's due to how information is captured by a sensor and how it is represented in binary format.
No, that is not correct. Film has way more stops in the highlights. Digital works the other way around and it’s also incredibly easy to prove. Highlights retention is much more manageable in films, where in Digital is extremely easy to clip highlights, but you have more stops in the shadows to retrieve information. In facts that’s exactly what I have to do with the Ursa. I have to expose for the highlights (which are incredibly easy to clip) and at 800 iso I have roughly 8 stops in the shadows to play around with. That film needed light is a pretty well known fact, as well as that it was super noisy in the shadows.
