I have these and have a few comments with regard to the Dolby setting. There are a bunch of caveats, but the Dolby settings work great. First you need to install the Atmos for Headphones audio driver on your console or PC. Then you need to select that driver in your system settings. Finally you need to configure the audio in your game to Dolby 5.1 or Dolby Atmos and not a headset or stereo option. The key is tuning the audio like you would for speakers rather than headphones. The sound is going to be very game dependent, but if you play an Atmos encoded movie you will be wowed by the Soundstage.

Hey Frank, I know I'm late to the party but my guess to the "tinnie, robotic" sound of DSS, is maybe due to you just using the usb cable and not using an optical audio cable.

  • @Simp4DaBois
    @Simp4DaBois 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

I agree with the dolby surround sound. I have had the astros A40s for a very long time. I got really excited about the DSS setting and I much prefer the stereo setting. On another note, I think by far Astros are the most comfy gaming headphones out there. I know that everyones head is shaped differently so that is very subjective but looking into comfort, I think these are great. The only thing I'm not a fan of of the headphones are that they are not noise cancelling at all. I heard if you got different ear cups that it will help. but if you have a lot of background noise on a normal basis, you will need to turn up the mixamp a decent amount. Last little thing, another great thing I love about the mixup is that I can plug my phone into it and I can listen to music while I play, my favorite part about it.

You’re only half right. On top of using the optic cable, You also need to be using drivers that have the “Dolby digital live” licensing. If you use Realtek, I believe the latest drivers that have the Dolby digital live licensing was 2016. I just installed it today and will be trying these headsets out.
I am pulling this info straight from the Astro website from their FAQ section. Google it and you’ll see. You need Dolby digital live for that native support.
If that doesn’t work on Realtek though, or if the mobo doesn’t feature an optical port you must get a sound card that has an optical port and has the “Dolby digital live” licensing.
Sound blaster z sound cards have this. Unfortunately the card is another $100 to spend.
Also I sent a twitter message to frank about this. I’m crossing my fingers that he will respond

Well... I had Arctis Pro + dac for 3 years. They "pre-broke" so I sold them cheap. I realised my headset had tiny crack near hinge. I used google and found so many dissapointed people have the same problem as I did. I took care of my headset and didn't throw them or used any violence. This is clearly manufacture error. Soon without proper fix they will break and headcups will tear apart. Use google and you'll see what I mean. If you have steelseries or will buy them, you could have same problem, I warn you.
Now for a month I have used Astro A40 TR, mixamp and hdmi adapter... Astro is the best! I use these with PS5. Sound is awesome! Quality build and... well basically everything is great. Nothing bad to say. These are premium headsets! Mixamp really gives boost. I don't miss those Arctis Pro headset.

I have bought this new Mixamp and have been using it with my Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Gen2. Let me tell you that when u use it correctly with the optical cable on a PS4... you are in for a real audio upgrade. The audio is so much more crisp and alive, I started of with the wrong settings and that is what you are hearing in this video a washed out dolby that does not do anything special. However when I fixed the settings my headset finnally got the juice it needed to sound EPIC. Apex has been amazing since the upgrade. If you want even better audio consider the Creative Sounblasterx G6 but it comes with a sacrifice, it does not have the chat mix volume button which is why I choose the Astro Mixamp to have all the controles at my finger tips. Hope this helps anyone who was wondering :)

I JUST bought these yesterday, and with the optical cable plugged in, and PS4 system settings changed EXACTLY to included instructions, DSS sounds fine and doesn't have issues stated in the video. The closest to that I experienced was the mic sensitivity was too high and mic doesn't need to be as close to my face as my old TB 400s. The biggest thing I have to say is upgrading from a roughly 10yr old headset to this is different, but nothing to do with the quality of the product.

And it looks like the Arctis Pro still has the best virtual surround sound. It's not tinny sounding, it doesn't echo and the positional audio is fantastic. I almost always keep the DTSx on because it really sounds great, better than any surround sound I've heard on a headset. The Sony Platinum does sound great with games that support 3D audio tho. I've tried many xbox headsets and my two scents:
I had A40's for years which were amazing before deciding to go wireless, and it was a huge mistake.
I went to the Astros with the controller connected mixamp. Best wireless connectivity out of the following with good audio, but starting buzzing after about a year..
Went to the a50's which are the best quality headsets when they work. I used them for a couple years, but they cut out audio every now and then which over time became more and more consistent.
Recently tried the Steelseries Arctis 9x and this headset doesn't even compare. Cutting out audio less than a month in, and clearly stereo left and right audio. It cuts out like the A50s with the audio sounding like the starting turtle beaches(which I had before going to astros).
Punchline: I'm about to go back and order these upgraded A40s. I know it will he the most comfortable, best sounding, and most reliable headset for me going forward.
I also had a few turtle beaches before Astros and they are decent but Astros are more comfortable and sound better in my opinion.
Just wanted to give my insight for people in my shoes.
No doubt I'll be using these A40's without issues for a while. Excited to go back to wired with my DJ mixamp.

I had contemplated buying the A40s since 2013 and decided to finally do it last week. The reason was because I heard a lot of good things about them, but never really anything from anyone that credible really. Also heard a lot of bad things so was always hesitant. I got these TR 2019 editions without the MixAMP and I've enjoyed them so far. I think they're decently comfortable (though no one can replace the OG HyperX Clouds, those are insane in comfort) and they sound pretty good. Honestly, they sound decent. My previous headset was the Cloud Alphas and they feel very similar, only that the A40s have more bass and sound wider, obviously because it's open vs closed. The only thing I think is bad about them and one of the biggest reasons I've hesitated getting them for this long is the price. It is 100% overpriced, no doubt about it. But, that doesn't mean it's a bad product. You just aren't getting 100% value for your money. I'd say a good portion goes into buying it for the brand and the aesthetics, given that I think it's the best looking headset design of all time.
TL;DR: it's good, but overpriced. If you don't mind "wasting" (essentially) money or don't mind not getting 100% value (or if you just wanna buy for the brand also, not just the headset), then yes, as a long time gamer who's gone through dozens of different headsets, I can recommend it.
Great video by the way, Frank. :)
