  • The On Cloudultra is the first running shoe from the Swiss brand aimed specifically at ultra runners tackling mixed terrain. It's also On's first off-road shoe to feature a combination of Helion foam, Speedboard and double layers of Clouds with a new closed Cloud outsole that won't pick up stones.
    It's built for comfort, cushioning and efficiency over the long haul on approach roads, compacted trails and mountain tracks but how does it stand up to the test?
    We took it for a 40-mile run across tarmac and trails to find out if On has a wining shoe in the ultra game. Here's our multi-tester verdict on this On Cloudultra review.

    I did my first ever trail marathon in a pair of these and everything hurt apart from my feet! I am moving into the ultra space over the next year and I will likely just get another pair and rotate the two for my longer runs. I am currently on probably around 350-400KM with them and they are barely showing any signs of wear. Love these shoes.

    i got this shoe and my opinion is this: this shoe is very similar to the salomon sense ride 2 and that shoe i just loved. i really like the cloudultra. didnt expect it to be that good since im not very amazed by on running shoes but i like it a lot. update: i especially like the cloudultra when running down. i can run very fast and it takes it all. very good. update: on recommends to buy this show half a size larger than usual. i agree to that. it is wider than other on running shoes.

      Hi (Kieran here), I struggle to get into the Salomons. Just too narrow across the laces for me. But a big fan of the Cloudultra. I've got a 70-mile run around the Isle of Wight in a few days and I'm now thinking I might use these for that.

    Thanks for such a detailed review. My pair arrived this morning and already they are feeling as nimble as my Salomon S-Lab Ultra 3's. I've gone (kind of) full circle from the years of the Vibram Fivefingers to the max cushioned Hoka's and Altra's back to shoes that feel more dialled in and responsive. I've gotten three major release shoes in the last year in preparation for a 200k Ultra in September next that includes over 65K of road (Kerry Way Ultra) and am on the hunt for the best shoe for the job (or the best placebo for the job....). The Inov8 TerraUltra G270's are a bit too harsh. Until this morning the S-Lab's were the ones, but these feel excellent. Exactly as you described and I did go up a half size based on your recommendation. I'll likely end up wearing both these and the Salomons throughout. Cheers and happy trails :)

      Hi Brian, (Kieran here), thanks for the comment. Really interesting to hear your experiences as well and that you've been through the process. I think the Cloudultra cope well on the road stretches. A bit like a Cloud X. Inov-8 Trailfly might be another interesting one to look at in the mix. On a side note, I ran the Half on the Head a few years back and people were telling me about the Kerry Way. What a glorious place to run. Sounds like a really fantastic challenge. All the best with the training and let us know what you end up wearing.

    I recently got a pair of these. I usually wear a 10 across the board; however, the online size guide recommended I go up to a 10.5. I opted to try them on in a shop before I committed to buying them, and after having tried the 10.5 I ended up leaving with a size 11! I too have a very tall foot, meaning it was a struggle just to put the 10.5 on. I was somewhat concerned that the 11 would be too long, but they are actually spot on.

    I do my long runs off road, and these sound like they'd be perfect for that! Interestingly I've got a set of cloudventure peaks with the big gap between the clouds and have never picked up anything in them, maybe I've just got lucky!

    • @TheRunTesters
      @TheRunTesters  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These could make a good off-road long Sunday run shoe. Much more nimble than the Cloudventure Peak for sure. And you're lucky with those stones. We always get them!

    • @m3phist0
      @m3phist0 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also run with the Cloudventure Peak down canal paths and Richmond park mostly and I don't recall picking up any stones. My road running clouds however have picked up a few stones in their lifespan so far. Interestingly the newer the shoe the more likely it is to collect a stone I've found.

      @@m3phist0 Do you try CVPeak after it has snowed and/or some ice? Do they work fine? I am thinking of it along with Evo SPG and TNF flight Vectiv? It is hard to find a good shoe to run in winter conditions.

    • @m3phist0
      @m3phist0 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rajkumarraosinhji1397 for icy winter conditions I'd probably stay clear of the Cloudventure Peak. It's a great lightweight trail conquering shoe during dry weather on technical terrain or wet weather on less technical terrain. It's downside is it's terrible grip over slippery surfaces such as ice and wet (chalk) rock. There's simply not enough rubber making contact with the surface at the same time. I learned this the hard way when completing a trail marathon in torrential rain. If you want something a bit lighter than the EVO Speedgoat that has decent enough lugs, the Torrent2 has served me well. It's rubber is sticky and its cushioning is good enough for me as a door to trail shoe as well. If I were you I'd look into Torrent2, the TerraUltra with its grapheme enhanced grip (hear it's the best in the business over all terrain), the Peregrine range incl the ICE+ model and sense ride by Salomon. How are you finding the Flight Vectiv?

    that outsole looks like it would be more durable than the other On shoes. I love the cloudflow, it fits my foot perfectly and I love the simplicity of it but I find the clouds collapse so easily. I only get about 350km out of the shoe before the clouds collapse.

      the outsole seems solid enough, but the sole itself is not, soft rubber and really tiny blocks, especially in the back and front, gone immediately and the tracktion becomes pretty bad.

    8:54 you can already see the damage to the sole in the back, 10:22, same in front. This also happened to mine, it's basically flat, not that it was too aggressive earlier, but still. Very disappointing for a shoe that is supposed to be used for ultra distances, hence more than once for 50k... Not to mention the price... Surely the mid sole is going to last longer, but good luck running a shoe with a basically flat back on even a tiny descent or turning/stopping on grass. I made a warranty claim, but they said it's normal and won't accept it.

    For UK trails in Spring/Summer, grass/paths/gravel/road, 10km to 30km. Would you go Cloudultra, trailfly or Hoka ATR6/Speedgoat/EVO

    • @TheRunTesters
      @TheRunTesters  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Oli, (Kieran here) I'd like to do a bit more in the TrailFly to firm up my take but I think I'd lean towards the Cloudultra for less intense (flatter) trails and shorter distances where maybe I'd be moving faster. But I like a firmer ride than some. But if I was going to be out on the trails for longer, the TrailFly offer a little more foot protection. So I'd pick these first for something like 100k ultra where I knew I'd be 10 hours plus. The other thing I'd say is the TrailFly feel a lot more durable. Early days in the tests but they feel like they're built to last.

    Great shoe, However overall the lack of confidence in the tread grip will leave you wanting for just a bit more. Wet performance on timber boards, rock sheets and downhill steel stairs is not the best in these shoes. Adidas trail shoes have the same fit with a size down. Dry performance is great yet not the best. My 30km review on Australian trails.
