"For serious drawing, doesn’t work." I disagree. As some have mentioned, they've used it for serious creative work. I also know a guy who does illustration and animation with his surface pro. I hope they realise how many potential customers are out there who just wait for that stupid jitter to go away. --- Update: To be fair, after I made that comment I have used the new Surface Pro 6, and the jitter isn't as a big of a problem as I thought so. The reason is that in practice you never draw that slow
I love this machine. Yeah, there's definitely a drop off (pen wise - from my Cinitiq Pro 24) but, it's not like I can carry my work station around. Granted the Apple pencil is better but, the rest of the Surface Pro is better. And as stated, the Pro can run "everything" and it's seemless with my workstation. You can't continue or start something on the go if using Painter, Illustrator or PS as examples, with your ipad. Plus... so nice to be out of the Apple ecosystem... another topic but, too wonderful not to mention!
You've clearly never owned an ipad to make a comment like that. Ipad has great PSD support so why you need photoshop? There's procreate, sketchbook, clip studio, paintstom, affintiy photo, infinite painter, etc the list goes on for the number of apps that can use PSD files. Not to mention who wants photoshop or illustrator on an ipad anyways when you'll sit there and pay a crap ton of money to due its subscription pricing? You could just buy affinity photo and designer which comes with 90% of everything photoshop and illustrator does, only its a one time price/buy. There is a reason why you see a lot of artists use an ipad for their mobile devices and just about none of them use a surface pro, despite both being in the same price range and the surface pro running "everything". Its all about good drawing software and experience, an area where the ipad crushes the surface.
During all this time, you can master and polish your skills. Also, you will see are there any serious flows in this device and also you will see how the strong competition on that field will give you more options (maybe a better device from another company) or a better one from Microsoft with a better price-tag. So, I am sure that you will find the best choice for you just because you have the time to find the best one. Cheer up!
They need to update that pen technology to catch up to apple and wacom. Regarding the tablet design, I know it’s great but I hope they’re not thinking that they created the perfect design cuz there’s still room for improvement, at least I have some weird shit in mind.
Update what?. Why do you all have to lie that ipad pen beats surface pen? Do you even know how many pressure the iPad pen has? That ipad pen was horrible cause it lacked simple eraser. It rolled off the table each time it wasn't in use and the latency doesn't quite beat the surface pro. Don't give me that bullshit that the ipad pro feel more natural cause that has been proven to be a lie so many times.
I bought the Surface Pro (2017) last year, and to this day it's still the best purchase I've ever made. I am so happy with it that it will take a little more than a tech bump for me to upgrade, but I'm excited to see what they come out with next year.
Hey, I think its great. Choice is awesome and this device will let people, who don't want an iPad, not be forced to get one. iPads aren't for everyone and if you don't want to compromise your experience with windows, you should't have to. Great review Brad.
the latency you're seeing in the drawing apps could be from line smoothing, it sets back your lines as to remove most unwanted bumps. some apps can disable this or add more if you want ultra smooth lines.
The production quality of your videos has gone through the roof. You seem far more relaxed and natural on camera too. Your call to action on the affiliate link is perfect. Mid video animations and jokes are perfectly timed. I have started to watch these videos now just because of o entertainment value. Great Job.
That's awesome, thanks! Over the summer I started dedicating another full day a week to making each video, so glad that time is showing up on the quality side of things :)
I simply don't understand the jitter claim. I do concept art for a living and I used Wacom for about 12 years, switched to Surface Book and don't experience it.
@@Lurreable Sounds like an edge case if I have to experience it by setting up a scenario that isn't part of a normal flow to make it happen. I understand the concern, but even from using Wacom every day for 12 years, it wasn't something even noticeable when making the switch.
Lucky you! The stylus isn't horrible, but I could never get used to the noticeable lag and jitter. Now, after switching to the iPad, Microsoft would have to completely overhaul their pen for me to go back. Shame, I loved the SP otherwise :(
@@Beanie84 Funny, as someone with Apple products for YEARS, I feel exactly the opposite. iPad is a toy or companion, MacBooks are great but stale; most importantly my flow was seriously simplified on the Surface (Book).
Yea, the iPad isn't a complete computer replacement as ads claim, but as a companion drawing device for personal art and commissions, it does the job perfectly for me. More resource heavy work is better suited for actual computers.
for anyone having surface and wants to enjoy drawing, don't even think about photoshop, it is slow with terrible stabilizer and intense wobbly-jitter lines and also bad brushes. I Highly recommend "Krita" it works pretty smooth, brushes are amazing specially the pencil brushes, and you have multiple stabilizer options, the feeling is unlike any other app i tried. if you went to store to just test surface pen and they don't have krita just use windows sketchpad it is a lot better than photoshop.
I have this laptop and use it with Photoshop all the time. I didn't get any wobbly lines?? Honestly not sure why he did cause my lines end up beautifully smooth
Nackle Putackle its the way you draw; if you draw with your wrist like this guy, youre more likely to end up with feathered or wobbly lines, but if you draw with your arm, the your lines are a lot smoother
Thanks Mr. Brad for your honest review My daughter is an artiest an she is asking me to get an iPad pro but when I asked around someone recommended the Microsoft Surface to me since he's using it himself. I felt bad that I might get her the Surface since it's cheaper and within my budget and that always means it's not as good as the iPad Pro. But now after watching you review I feel this might be a good start for her and the Surface is not inferior at all and on top of that it's a full PC.
I am not an artist nor do I care about any devices ability to do it, BUT I thoroughly enjoy your review. A big review company needs to hire you to animate their reviews.
Microsoft keeps breaking my heart. It's such a nice device but that jitter... I thought things would change when they bought N-trig. Finally they would have the money and resources for a perfect integration. But no. Still a generation behind.
I was really really really looking forward to buying this year's surface. I love everything about it, but that stylus is what's keeping me away from buying it! God, Microsoft, WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!
There is literally 0 jitter on mine. It only happens on the surface pen when you're drawing SUPER slow. I use the bamboo ink which is $50 cheaper and its perfect.
You're the best! Thank you for the honest review and artist perspective AND comparing this to Apple and Wacom. Everything I wanted to get out of this review!!!
Any tips for graphic design programs for someone just starting out? I have a 100$ limit for programs right now...getting my surface 6 next week to use as my laptop and drawing tablet... im nervous.. haha
I love the funny animations and humour in the video! It adds a nice harmless flare (harmless jokes between Apple and Microsoft). I love it along with your well thought out review.
So I have a question... of I use a drawing app (firealpaca) theres a "stabilizer" or correction. It makes it so the lines draw smoother and makes them not jittery. If I used that with the Surface Pro and pen, do you think it would fix the jitter and be just fine? Because when I do lineart I like PERFECTLY straight and non jittery lines
As a tech guy, the big thing you forgot to mention is how the processor is now fully quad core rather than dual core with hypertreading (a pseudo quad core). This makes it so CPU intensive tasks can do a lot better now like video editing and includes drawing application since all is carried by the CPU since there is no dedicated GPU to do the brute work.
Congrats for your 100k! Following you since the mobile studio pro video (watching and daydreaming I could afford it) You are doing amazing job. You totally deserved!
I use most adobe softwares, blender 3D. I love illustrating, but I always improvise. However, this is perfect for a student who is studying Graphic Design/Visual Communication.
Hope it helps to save your money, folks! It will cost you a new one display for get a new battery, because surface pro line (from pro 3 model) is totally solid and the only way to get inside of it - is to kill your LCD - it's glued everywhere! Totally non-repairable device. I've sold my old one pro 2017 because of this (the battery get degraded from daily usage, and there was no hope to easy replace of it). Looking for Dell's latitude 2 in 1 series now because of this reason (it's much more easier to service).
Can you or someone else explain to me how the Apple is better cause I'm starting to get the feeling people just like saying "Apple pen is better" .................?! I have used both and i the surface pen beats in my own opinion. Oh and surface pen has an eraser.
Was looking for the answer aswell. Since no one answerd, i guess it just comes down to "apple sheeps" saying, that the apple stuff is better than everthing else. Since Apple-stuff is usually good and the convinience (apple eco system) is much higher than on other devices, who tend to do their own stuff and don't fully commit on the things they are doing. In my opinion Apple puts much thought into they products, and how to scam the customer afterwards (dongle life), while other are more like "we copy there and ignore that, while we enhance some other stuff". In conclusion, the apple pencil is great - has magnetic charging on the side and works well on apple devices, while the surface pencil is out there for a much longer period, while only getting revisited once after the surface pro 2. Since then it is more or less a standstill, leaving much room for competition.
There is also the severe lack of drawing and photo manip apps on Android, most artists are being driven to Ipads with the results that even indy app creators that do art themselves (Borodante for example) end up skipping on Android. Witch is fucking terrible for people like me who don't really want to join the cult of Apple.
So hang on, if I buy the surface pro 6 and couple that up with a Wacom pen instead, would that avoid these annoying issues? I thought that this was a Surface Pro issue. I'm buying this device and don't want to pay for the pen if there are better options out there. Can anyone help?
I had the yoga 920 with the wacom AES pen and it was fantastic for the pen experience. But, the integrated graphics are just not fit to run Photoshop without lag so I returned it. But there is generally a problem with photoshop on these new laptops because I was getting lag even on a fully speced Surface book 2, and returned it also because of it.
5th touch screen Windows device now and best by far. I think it is great value. Purchased a whole lot of USB C devices for my previous USB C ONLY Galaxy Tab Pro S and to be honest it isn’t an issue not having it. I have the adapter so everything is compatible. We have hundreds of the previous versions of these at work, and they keep getting more and more reliable and stable with each version. Would give it 8 out of 10
my problem is with the digital pen, since after a while the tip wears out and they gave me it without a spare tip so I think the tip could wear to the point that it starts to scratch the screen and it would be a big problem Because Since the pen and tablet are quite expensive, it was a miracle that I had a chance to get it. (sorry if it's very poorly written, I don't speak English)
Do you use screen protector on your surface pro? If yes, tell please which one? Film or glass? How does it work when you use a stylus on a film or glass? Are there any bugs?
Brad!! Oh man!! Dude I’m glad you did a review on the 6! I was just about to tweet you asking what you thought about it! Because I bought the 4 because of the review you did on it :)
you should really try affinity photo instead of photoshop or do acomparison vid. was blown away by how much faster affinity (at least on my laptop) runs. as well as soe awesome added features adobe doesnt have. great vid as always, keep it up!
I assume it must a big throwback to his surface 3 or 4 times, that one story time he made if anyone remembers, he said that he loved the surface until the ipad got the stylus but the surface mainly was giving him what wasn't there yet in that time, a portable drawing device
If drawing is the main interest and anything else falls secondary, what should be the choice between a Surface Pro 6 and a Galaxy S Tab 4? I've noticed the responsiveness of GST4 is really good, but on the other hand SP6 has a fuller OS, even if it wouldn't be used as a regular Windows device, with drawing being the main focus.
Hey quick question, im a animation student looking for a new laptop to run all the Adobe applications but mainly for Adobe animate, is this surface pro a good pick? Or is there something else better?
Last year I bought a second hand Surface pro 1. I also bought a compatible pen to draw on Photoshop at work... Damn it was bad. Horrible! Maybe it's cuz I'm used to my cintiq 13HD but the S. Pro 1 is disgusting to draw cuz it's not precised at all, there's ZERO pen pressure. The canvas moves randomly as soon the palm of your hand touches the screen. Is it the same with the Surface ''pro'' 6? Thanks.
With photoshop line straightnwss doesnt really matter with the Smoth line tool. Surfece pro isnt made for artist but I asure you youll get a pretty capable laptop and deawing tool. If you have a pc already dont bother to go for the surface
@@thebradcolbow I am in high school and im thinking about getting a laptop soon. Would you recommend the surface pro 6 or regular laptop + xp-pen 12 in terms of which one gives better productivity. I use mine for audio recording and this is a beast. The band can buy 2 of these for the price of one MacBook. Not to mention the power you get for a cheaper price. The touch screen makes editing much much easier. I don’t know why most review on this laptop/tablet is all about drawing. Surface pro will eat ipad when it comes to music editing as long as you play on he price.
I personally won't recommend Xp-pen, I bought the display once, the display was not good, and I could say that was the worst screen I've ever used. I even doubt that if I got an IPS panel, the view angle was so bad... Got refunded.
I just bought the iPad Pro, and I’m loving it :) if you want quality for a slightly lesser price, go for this one. I personally chose it for the portability and ease of use- I dislike waiting for something to start up especially if it takes a long time which usually happens in laptops. Since the iPad can easily be booted up anytime, anywhere, it’s easy to work and keep working. Plus it has a very colour accurate screen; I’ve never had any occurrence where the colours of one of my pieces looked vastly different from screen to screen. Well, I’m an animation student and freelance artist, so I really need work done fast, and the iPad does that great. If you’re just a hobbyist, maybe you’re better off working with something else.

Is this the best option if I want a travel tablet that I can do things like blender on or are there other options that could give this a run for its money?

I hope they realise how many potential customers are out there who just wait for that stupid jitter to go away.

Update:
To be fair, after I made that comment I have used the new Surface Pro 6, and the jitter isn't as a big of a problem as I thought so. The reason is that in practice you never draw that slow
Me! That would bother me.
Your art coupled with your humor is a unique touch that distinguishes your channel from others. Keep it up!
The surface pens pretty good too/on par with apple if you calibrate it
You've clearly never owned an ipad to make a comment like that. You could just buy affinity photo and designer which comes with 90% of everything photoshop and illustrator does, only
its a one time price/buy.
There is a reason why you see a lot of artists use an ipad for their mobile devices and just about none of them use a surface pro, despite both being in the same price range and the
surface pro running "everything". Its all about good drawing software and experience, an area where the ipad crushes the surface.

I want this, but by the time I can afford it the 2019 version will be available.
Cheer up!
Just wait for 2019.
Why not iPad pro instead? Same price, no jitter, better screen and colors, now with photoshop available.
tabundo001 my biggest gripe is the lack of freedom with Apple.
Well the next generation is out
I'm so gonna get it...second hand from ebay...the next year
Was just telling my brother how I'm gonna get the black version in like 6 years lmfao !!
Or you can get the cheapest Wacom and some second hand laptop. Surface is a good enough experience, but not a "must have" experience at all.

you absolutely leveled up your videos with the sound and short animations. Pro level, Brad!
They need to update that pen technology to catch up to apple and wacom. Regarding the tablet design, I know it’s great but I hope they’re not thinking that they created the perfect design cuz there’s still room for improvement, at least I have some weird shit in mind.
What program is he using for draw mario?
That's photoshop.
Surface pen is smooth, what are you talking about?
What do you think can be improved in the tablet design?
Update what?. Why do you all have to lie that ipad pen beats surface pen? Do you even know how many pressure the iPad pen has? That ipad pen was horrible cause it lacked simple eraser. It rolled off the table each time it wasn't in use and the latency doesn't quite beat the surface pro. Don't give me that bullshit that the ipad pro feel more natural cause that has been proven to be a lie so many times.
I watched so many reviews and this was definitely the best one
I bought the Surface Pro (2017) last year, and to this day it's still the best purchase I've ever made. I am so happy with it that it will take a little more than a tech bump for me to upgrade, but I'm excited to see what they come out with next year.
Same! I was a bit salty I bought mine a few days before the surface 6 was announced but I still love this thing.
My life has changed after running into your channel. I laughed so much, but yet, learn just as much! Thank you for this.
Congrats on 100k man, you deserve it. Been here since the start. I knew you would get here.
Apparently a windows update fixes/improves diagonal lines A LOT re-visit this?
He did a video with this surface and the new Wacom pen now, jitter still there really.

While it handles photoshop ok fine, I'm curious as to how it performs when running illustrator.
Is this still good in 2021?
Doesn't seem much different from the Pro 7
thank you! it really helped 👍
I simply don't understand the jitter claim. I do concept art for a living and I used Wacom for about 12 years, switched to Surface Book and don't experience it.
Try drawing diagonals with a ruler. I'd love to see what you get.
I Highly recommend "Krita" it works pretty smooth, brushes are amazing specially the pencil brushes, and you have multiple stabilizer options, the feeling is unlike any other app i tried. if you went to store to just test surface pen and they don't have krita just use windows sketchpad it is a lot better than photoshop.
those wobbly lines just freaked me out
I have this laptop and use it with Photoshop all the time.
Thanks Mr. Brad for your honest review
My daughter is an artiest an she is asking me to get an iPad pro but when I asked around someone recommended the Microsoft Surface to me since he's using it himself.
Brilliant, thanks! Would i7 16gb stylus lag less than your i5 8gb version? (in photoshop and other drawing apps)
Fantastic delivery, entertainment, information, demonstrations, presentation, just brilliant☺️☺️☺️☺️
Congratulations to the 100K Brad!!!
Congrats for your 100k! Following you since the mobile studio pro video (watching and daydreaming I could afford it) You are doing amazing job. You totally deserved!
This was the funnest and best Surface Pro review I’ve watched yet! 😂
I use most adobe softwares, blender 3D. I love illustrating, but I always improvise. However, this is perfect for a student who is studying Graphic Design/Visual Communication.
Man your videos are awesome and finally helped me decide which one to choose
Hope it helps to save your money, folks!
It will cost you a new one display for get a new battery, because surface pro line (from pro 3 model) is totally solid and the only way to get inside of it - is to kill your LCD - it's glued everywhere! Totally non-repairable device. I've sold my old one pro 2017 because of this (the battery get degraded from daily usage, and there was no hope to easy replace of it). Looking for Dell's latitude 2 in 1 series now because of this reason (it's much more easier to service).
where can you buy that gloves? i'm seriously need it for my sweaty hands, by the way how's the battery
Great review, and congrats on the subscriber milestone. Well deserved!
Thanks and thanks :)
So hang on, if I buy the surface pro 6 and couple that up with a Wacom pen instead, would that avoid these annoying issues? I thought that this was a Surface Pro issue. I'm buying this device and don't want to pay for the pen if there are better options out there. Can anyone help?
Apple/Window logo side comments was a nice touch
And great review as always!

I have been waiting for this review since the Microsoft Open Ceremony;-) Thank you!
hehe, me too :)
Have you tried using the other pens...like apple and such on this device? Just wondering if they work? Seems crazy I know...but hey worth a try...
Have you reviewed a Lenovo Yoga? How are they for illustration?
I had the yoga 920 with the wacom AES pen and it was fantastic for the pen experience. But, the integrated graphics are just not fit to run Photoshop without lag so I returned it. But there is generally a problem with photoshop on these new laptops because I was getting lag even on a fully speced Surface book 2, and returned it also because of it.
Amin Bajrektarevic that’s a bummer. Maybe it could still be a good secondary device. Thanks for the info!
Lilly Aguilar As a secondary device an iPad Pro does the job perfectly, at least for me...
It's a lot better when you disable GPU acceleration in settings.

Hi, I was wondering what pen that is compatible with surface pro 6 is the best. Any good hint?
I love the little apple logo guy and windows guy their dynamic is great!
Super funny too!!
my problem is with the digital pen, since after a while the tip wears out and they gave me it without a spare tip so I think the tip could wear to the point that it starts to scratch the screen and it would be a big problem Because Since the pen and tablet are quite expensive, it was a miracle that I had a chance to get it.

you should really try affinity photo instead of photoshop or do acomparison vid. was blown away by how much faster affinity (at least on my laptop) runs. as well as soe awesome added features adobe doesnt have. great vid as always, keep it up!
If you were to use bamboo ink stylus with this instead of the surface pen, would it solve the problem of jagged lines?
Are there any hotkey shortcut keyboards you recommend since I'll be drawing in photoshop without the mouse and keyboard?
Hey quick question, im a animation student looking for a new laptop to run all the Adobe applications but mainly for Adobe animate, is this surface pro a good pick? Or is there something else better?
Great review man... Good job and keep it up!
You can adjust the latency with a registry mod
Last year I bought a second hand Surface pro 1. I also bought a compatible pen to draw on Photoshop at work... Damn it was bad. Horrible! Maybe it's cuz I'm used to my cintiq 13HD but the S. Pro 1 is disgusting to draw cuz it's not precised at all, there's ZERO pen pressure. The canvas moves randomly as soon the palm of your hand touches the screen. Is it the same with the Surface ''pro'' 6? Thanks.
Definitely love your videos with those animations!
Thanks!
This is such a cool review. Love your style!
What's the best way to record digital speed painting/time lapse videos? What software would be the best?
really like your video style and animations thanks for the information and keep up the good work :)
In terms of drawing quality, (e.g. parallax, initial activation force, line straightness) which one is better; xp-pen artist 12 or surface pro 6?
With photoshop line straightnwss doesnt really matter with the Smoth line tool. Surfece pro isnt made for artist but I asure you youll get a pretty capable laptop and deawing tool. If you have a pc already dont bother to go for the surface
For parallax the Surface wins hands down. Everything else the XP pen is better.
@@thebradcolbow I am in high school and im thinking about getting a laptop soon. Would you recommend the surface pro 6 or regular laptop + xp-pen 12 in terms of which one gives better productivity. Note that I probably wont be doing anything too CPU intensive, just practicing and making illustrations.
What is best for draw precision with pencil? Xp-pen Artis 12 or XP Pen artist 16 pro? And iPad 2018 or artist 12? Nice review of surface pro :)
