  • So I'm sure many of you have seen my review and unboxing of the Dell Canvas ( • Dell Canvas 27 Review ... ) as well as my other videos on the new 27" drawing tablet aimed at artists and creatives! We know that this peripheral monitor works on Windows 10 but lots of you have been wanting to know if the Dell Canvas works on an Apple Mac - let's plug it in and find out! If it does work on OS X, then is it perfect or are there some drawbacks. Stick around and find out. As always, feel free to ask any questions, give me a thumbs up & share this video on FaceBook!
    Until next time, keep on painting!
    Lawrence.

    Mac user here. I'd love to see full support on the Mac. Obviously can't consider buying it otherwise. Thanks for the video!

      I've given up on Apple since they won't give us touch screens & pen tech on MacBook Pros but I would have liked to have seen Mac drivers too for the Canvas. After talking in depth with Dell though, I really don't think this PC company is interested in developing any OS X drivers. I think it's just their way of helping push more Mac users over to the PC side. You can't blame them for that I suppose - no point in supporting the 'opposition'. lol.

    That Dell Canvas working on Macs and OS X would be all sorts of awesome!
    AND I agree, this maybe a stylus driver issue!
    I really want the Dell Canvas to work on Macs and. OS X (OS Ten NOT Ex, FYI. I hate when people do that! It's Ten NOT X) and macOS!
    Another cool demo, Lawrence!

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW

      Thanks Michel. Dell read these comments so I imagine, if enough people want OS X compatibility, then they might take notice.
      I'm fine with calling it OS X simply because Apple themselves do it. Plus, there is the reason they called it OS X rather than OS 10. Apple said at the time that this was their last, ultimate OS. That kind of makes sense why to use the 'X' rather than '10'. It's a shame because what started out a beautiful OS has become packed with junk and update rubbish. I'd like to see an overhaul but I've heard that Apple have plans to make iOS take over on everything - a merging of the two. I'd like to see this happen. A nice simple Apple OS.

      Lol. Take it you're using a Mac? Well, you've got to remember that Dell are a PC manufacturer so they really want you using a PC and not a mac! I've swapped over. Not for this reason but just because Apple refuses to go with touch screens. I used Macs for almost 20yrs but even my 2yr old knows that every screen should be touch screen. haha. Windows is actually pretty good these days. Very similar to OS X. Not trying to convince you but that's why I swapped. If you get annoyed with Apple and fancy a change then it's maybe worth a look at some point!

      @@LAWRENCEcanDRAW Its really sad to me that Apple had this huge head start on touch UI but just refused to integrate any of it with OS X, and now you have Windows and Linux who have decent touch UI elements (windows is better, imo) and Apple doesn't even have a basic option for it. They want you to buy an iPad pro and just... ew no.

    Looks like it works much like the stylus on the Surface Pro first gen worked. it's not ideal by any means but its signs that people should keep an eye out for this. It would be silly for them to not work with MAC, from a professional point of view. As a windows user, i kind of hope that they end up making it work with mac becuase that just means more feedback from more people on making a better experience for everyone.

      Good point. The more Dell Canvas' they sell - the more they'll continue to make hardware like this for artists like us. I'd like to see it working with all the software or alternative variations. The good thing is, we now know it basically works!

    Dell collaborated with Microsoft and Windows 10, so no surprise that it does not work on a Mac. Apple is as much to blame that there is no touch because they REFUSE to do anything touch on desktop. . .

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Completely agree. Can't believe how they're just ignoring touch! Any other senses you think we could do without?? haha. Wait, the got rid of headphone jacks too. Hmmmm. Bye forever Apple!

    • @JoshKaufmanstuff
      @JoshKaufmanstuff 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, the headphone removal was a business decision to promote Apple wireless earphones (regardless of what they tell you) but with them moving to USB C connectors on the new Macbooks it seems like they should also do the same and put USB-C on iPhones.
      Emarrasing how they included the headphone jack on the mackbooks though, but if they switched connectors on the iPhone you could atleast use the same headphones on your Macbook and phone. Dedicated lightning headphones don't make much sense (that only work on tablet/phone but not laptop or anything else.)

    The one thing I've learned is having both. I have a MacBook Pro and a Cintiq companion 2 because I want to be an artist but to work with many companies they want you to be a Mac user. So I would say the best of both worlds is useing it to plug into a Mac wocem did it. Point blank as a professional if I can't use it to make money I'm not buying it.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to get the Mac thing about 10yrs ago but that's not really a problem any more. Nobody has required me to work on a Mac in some years. All the software & fonts are both now universal and that was the largest problem. What kind of companies are asking you to work on OSX?
      Anyway, we'll have to keep an eye out and see what Dell do about making the Canvas work across the board. Stay tuned.

  • @stanchung69
    @stanchung69 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Macuser here. Thank you for the review. It wont be a problem push comes to shove, just bootcamp into windows to get the functionality.
    Been waiting for a large touchscreen from Apple for ages. Currently using the IPP but the paltry 12.9" doesn't give me the feel of a large canvass as you would know. I'd want a 27" touch screen from Apple but I fear I would need to sell a kidney for it.
    Love your setup, been thinking about three screens with a 'dustbin'. haha

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The trashcan needs a major upgrade but I did love the design. I know a lot of users hated on it.
      What do you mean you've waited for a large touch-screan for ages? What about Wacom or the Chinese/Russian brands?? Apple are never gonna create a Wacom style tablet because they'd cripple iPad Pro sales in a heartbeat. lol. I'm surprised they haven't released an official app to mirror the screen themselves but we don't know all their plans (because Apple never talks to anyone).
      I don't agree with having to use Bootcamp. It has all kinds of issues. Applications never work 100% properly and even if they do then you run into background problems like fonts, browser etc. I'd rather just not touch it if Dell can get drivers off the ground for Mac users but I think this is just another reason to switch to Windows. Apple shoots itself for not giving us touchscreen stylus machines all-round!

    • @stanchung69
      @stanchung69 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      unfortunately I really dislike the windows platform. Don't get me wrong I've used them minimum 10 years for win and 15 for macs. A bit entrenched at the moment.
      Thanks for the suggestions. For what it's worth, a 27" one is not in the same class of 12.9". It's deffo not portable.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Question. When was the last time you used Windows? I hear that statement from a few Apple users every now & again but most haven't used since Windows 2000 or XP. Windows 10 and OS X are very similar. In fact, Apple have introduced so much into OS X over the last three years or so that I think has really bulked out the OS with unwanted extras. In the eyes of a hardcore Apple fan, the two operating systems are certainly comparable by that old argument.
      I will say that a lot of good OS X apps that I used have gone south or are now unsupported as well. Windows seems to have more choice which is a breath of fresh air from that point of view.
      All I'm saying is that next time you upgrade it's worth spending a day and doing some research!

    • @stanchung69
      @stanchung69 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lets see, windows 7 was the last. I just find I have to make extra clicks to find what I need. Software bloats. The worst experience was total meltdown back in 98 with the chernobyl virus.
      There are some nice things about windows but the dealbreaker is viruses transimitted thru USB drives that's so prevalent for MSOffice products.
      The user experience is just way better IMHO for OSX. I may not always get what I want but there's enough to keep me happy.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      See I found that OS X has become too bloated with all the same things that people moan about in Windows. haha.
      Windows 10 has an amazing built in virus software that I have to say has kept me totally free over the last year. It's captured and killed a couple of things on it's own. I'd say it now rivals Apple's with ease and that was a big thing for OS X for me too.
      I am glad to have MSOffice back rather than the Apple version. Full functionality is great :D
      The two seem to be so similar now and just copying each other so we're both getting the best of both worlds but I think for the moment Windows has the edge. I do miss the sideways finder browsing and I had to install a plugin so I could hit spacebar and see a preview ;)

    You are asking the wrong people for the Mac driver for the Canvas. Wacom made the Dell Canvas driver, not Dell.
    Also, as I said in your other video comments, you need the old Penabled UD frequency EMR pens. I used the Axiotron Modbook pen on the Dell Canvas at CES 2017 event and it work perfectly except for the eraser part IIRC.
    So the pens that should work on the Dell Canvas are: Cintiq 15X/17SX/18SX pens, Surface Pro 1 and 2 pens, Fujitsu T series pens, Samsung S-pens from Note phones and tablets, original Axiotron Modbook pens, older EMR pens for Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet PCs, Art Z II pens, old Wacom Pen Partner pens, and all other UD series frequency EMR pens.
    I'm sure you can get your hands on one of those pen easily from a friend. Borrow one and try it on your Dell Canvas.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're assuming Wacom made those drivers all on their own without Dell. That Wacom are somehow in charge of the drivers and that Wacom would release drivers for somebody elses product - which they would/could never do! I've already had brief conversations with Dell about this so I know kind of where it stands. I haven't pushed for too much information about the relationship between Wacom and Dell because I already have a good understanding of how confidential that is. Needless to say, I'm pretty certain Dell would be the folks to talk to about drivers for their own device.
      You never mentioned in your other comment that you had tried another stylus on the Canvas. lol. That might have been good to know. Either way, without the eraser working, it's totally pointless using a different stylus as you have no added functionality ad the Dell stylus is pretty great to use. I have to say though that I personally don't understand why some people are obsessed with trying a stylus out from a different tablet. Fine if you can get the eraser to work but other than that it's a complete waste of effort.

    • @Shogmaster
      @Shogmaster 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all, Wacom ALWAYS writes driver for other OEMs. All the Tablet PC ODMs that used Wacom digitizers pay Wacom to make the driver for their device. Dell won't be an exception, and the Dell product manager already confirmed that to me at the Canvas event.
      Second, at the event, the Wacom Wintab driver was not yet written for Dell by Wacom. It was only using Microsoft's built in Windows 10 driver (so no tilt at the show). Obviously you have tilt now because you have been using the Canvas. So that could mean that the eraser works now. I'm curious to see myself (personally I think flipping the pen around to use the eraser is asinine instead of using a keyboard shortcut, but lot of users want to so).
      Third, it's great thing if you have a cheaper way to get a replacement pen than from Dell for whatever they will charge. Here in the U.S., you can get UD pen for a song ($30). Wacom charges $70 for their own UD pen. That's big difference. I have had accidents with my Wacom pens so if you break it (ran over the pen with my chair's wheel for instance), having readily available replacement pen is a great thing.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I know her obviously. And yes I'm aware the Wacom write drivers but they don't do it by themselves and then hand over the finished things. It's a team effort with team members from both sides. Always is because of protocols in both the device and the stylus etc. What I was fundamentally getting at however was the fact that Wacom wouldn't want to a wouldn't be allowed to release drivers for Dells device so there's no point in asking them. I happen to know someone over in their OEM stylus dept but I know already I'd just be redirected to Dell.
      The version you tried at CES was running with very early software/drivers etc. Even I've had a few different updates. I'm sure it would be worth trying to see if it works now. I'd like to know myself. But I already know that I can't get hold of one without buying it. Would I do that just for one video? That is, I've gotta say, amazingly niche. Nope. Sorry fella. I did have a look but you're talking $40 and believe me when I say that you are fare more interested in that than I am. lol. Ba of me to say, I know. Truth is that those old pens (for the most part) are not as comfy or ergonomic to hold. The Dell Canvas stylus feels great, is solid as heck and works really well. I'm not too upset over the loss of the eraser. I'd rather loose that than have an older stylus that doesn't feel as good and might not work as well.
      I'm about 99% certain I don't know anyone who has one but I'll ask around. I understand the replacement argument but have you ever broken a stylus? In over 20yrs I never have! My kid plays with them all the time, they roll on the floor (by the wheels of my chair) but I never brake them. The only one that ever worried me Was the old Wacom 12-12-U Digitizer Pen! Oh! And the Apple Pencil looked really breakable too!
      Still open to trying it if you think you have a better argument!

      Nope. Pretty clear it's not going to change either now. Company that makes PCs just wants you to buy a PC - strange that. lol. Sorry Richard. The Cintiq Pro 24" is here though and I just had a go with that as you can see on my new video - do you fancy that??

      I saw the video...Nice. I am strongly considering the Cintiq Pro 24. But, the Touch version is a couple of months away. Long wait time. I have a PC and a Mac. I want to be able to use both computers with the tablet. Dell not supporting both OS's kind of seals the deal of me getting a Cintiq. Short-sighted on Dell's part. The Cintiq 27 QHD touch is on my list too. Don't know if I should get the Cintiq 27 QHD or wait for the Cintiq Pro 24. I really want a Cintiq now. Whats your opinion? Probably makes sense to wait.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely up to you - Screen size vs resolution - the 24" does have an SD card slot and a headphone jack but being an Apple guy you're not bothered about that :P lol. Sorry, couldn't resist the iPhone humour. I was a Mac user for 20yrs. It feels nice to have an Android Note 8 now with all the extras!! Remember that the 27QHD can be easily mounted on an Ergotron arm if that makes a difference to you?

    Hi Lawrence,
    Any update on whether this will be mountable? Drawing on a low profile might not be so good long term on the neck. I believe the only reason they keep advertising this as a horizontal display is because of the totems which I find somewhat as a gimmick.

      Yeah but as I've mentioned in a few other comments on this video, the Mac only thing is a 20yr old argument that is completely out of date now. It doesn't make much sense. I had a client talk to me about it and I reassured him that the OS didn't matter as long as creatives are handing over the right file-types with all attachments etc. I think it's just a case of educating people to changes in the tech to get rid of old stigmas. That looks good to clients.

    This doesn't surprise me as much as it does others...I mean Dell makes PC based devices and NOT Apple based. Maybe they will put the resources into it later on, but they may just not be interested immediately. I honestly don't feel too bad for the Apple folks as they have their share of Apple ONLY products and software that I would LOVE to have.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. If you read the other comments you can see a similar theme. I'm leaving Mac OS so it's no skin off my nose but I would like to see more cross compatibility from other software & hardware companies too. However I think Windows & Apple could both help with that a bit.

    • @videoshare5324
      @videoshare5324 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree! To me, it's always been a head scratcher. I know there are costs involved in creating these hardware and software solutions for both platforms but I have to believe that by almost doubling (in some cases) your market base, the benefits will far outweigh those costs.
      This has always puzzled me especially when it comes down to some of the specialized software apps out there. I mean c'mon,....even if you are biased toward one platform or another (which is silly in my opinion) why would you not want to reach the broadest market possible?
      Just my humble opinion....
      Todd

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Working with software & hardware developers I can tell you that the software folks don't often want to do it because a lot of the time they end up having to recreate their software again from scratch in a different coding platform just to get it onto Mac or vise-versa. Most of them don't want the hassle because they doubt the return will be worthwhile.
      It's the OS guys who need to become more compatible. Apple did some work towards this years ago when they first released OS X but a lot more can be done and the Hackintosh projects are proof of that.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Touch stylus & pens work like they would on any other touch screen but it's pointless unless you have at least all the functionality of the Dell stylus. I'm looking into some options not but not holding my breath for anything. Really I'm not too bothered because I think this stylus is good enough and I don't understand why anyone would want to use another stylus. There is the eraser which is a fair point to make and someone has already pointed out that it would be good to know for replacement purposes but that isn't a massive issue to me. Certainly not a deal breaker or anything I'd add on to the buying criteria - what do you think? Does it really make a difference?

      I do intend to get the Dell Canvas, as the Cintiq 27QHD is just too pricey. I won't openly discuss why I'd prefer a stylus with a wider tip, but it would be great if, in the future, Canvas at least supported Wacom's Creative Styluses, or even the Bamboo Solo...
      I serve as a by-invitation, independent advisor for Dell, so have forwarded your subscribers' interest in OSX support.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bit odd that you won't discus why you want the wider tip but okay - no pressure!
      I've already had a talk with the Canvas product team about this. I was told it's something they might look at later down the line after release but the more people talk about it, the more we can find out if people actually want it or if it's just an assumption.
      It does seem like a few people in the comments want to use alternative stylus' but it's hard to say what will actually be usable with the final drivers (I think I have those but can't be 100% sure). I've crossed a few off the list but since everyone seems to want something unique there's no way of testing them all.

    • @Hyncharas
      @Hyncharas 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If Canvas is now coming end-Apr/start-May, there could be a couple more drivers before it goes on sale. However, I was a little disappointed there wasn't an eraser function built into the stylus; in addition to the three-finger ability onscreen.
      Just wondering, does the ExpressKey Remote work with Canvas on Mac OSX, or is it just Windows 10?

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Wacom ExpressKey Remote will work on Mac OS X as long as you have the drivers installed.
      The finger gestures would come as a part of any OS X update does create I would imagine. But I an really not sure when or if Dell are interested in creating the Mac software. I'm going to have another chat with them about this.

    This is a very pet peeve of mine.OS X is OS 10 NOT ”X" The same way non-Apppe users use MAC (in capital letters ) to refer to Apple.Why do you think Apple numbers releases 10.2, 10.2, 10.3, etc.. It's definitely OS X (10) and if you know someone at Apple calling OS X "X" instead of 10, they are absolutely wrong!

      I've been a Mac user for 15yrs and I'm not bothered in the slightest about the silly names they've used (glad the cat theme is over). It's your preference what you call it. Between me and my friends we all pretty much just say OS 'X' but I've never given it any thought. Really didn't think anyone cared about it that much. Would you class yourself as a 'fanboy' though? or Mac lifer?

      Fair enough. I think if they were going to do that, they'd of done it on the last model. They have had the time. From what I understand, Apple just want to keep the Pencil to the iPad. But given the poor reviews the new MacBook Pro got, maybe they will do it. For a lot of long time Mac users like me though - it'll still be too little, too late.

    • @davidg260
      @davidg260 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the last time they had an update to the Imac they didn't have the apple pencil out yet. Tim Cook is always saying something like "we are doing something great with the new desktops." If you are thinking only laptops yah the last one should have had it . But Mac pro and Imacs haven't been updated with a new version is such a long time.

      If they do this . I would rather pay 3 to 4k for a pc/drawing screen combo with Mac then buying a portable pc with Wacom. I am a windows user now. But would change if the tech is good. Dont want to pay for tech that is low spec. Looking at Surface Studio.

      I don't mean to come across as a hater. I'm just frustrated that a company that once lead the charge in innovation, doesn't even want to give it's users touchscreens. Even my 2yr old know that all screens should be touch input now.
      Tim Cook keeps talking about behind the scenes but the last time he tried to wow us it was with the touch strip. When they get back in the creative game, I'll come take another look but for now they're loosing a lot of long time fans.

    Any updates on this Mac driver issue. I read somewhere that it will work on a Mac (pressure, etc.) with the Wacom drivers but didn’t get any proof of that.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They don't really class it as an 'issue' because it's not a fault. As far as Dell are concerned, the fault is that you bought a Mac. Lol. I get their point-of-view. They're a PC company. There's no reason for them to support the opposition. That said... They are shooting themselves in the foot here.
      Last I checked it did work but it wasn't as smooth and practical as it should be. It say Mac users should buy something else despite rumours they've heard.

      It's a solid card. Should be absolutely fine. Now I'm wondering what software you're using, not that it should make a difference but if it's a 32bit software then that might effect it.
      I'm assuming that the Canvas is up-to-date with drivers & firmware and your OS is up-to-date too.
      Turn touch off or make sure you're not touching the screen as you draw. See if there is line smoothing in your application and try with/without.

    Once again great coverage Lawrence! Is too bad is not fully functional with Mac products yet but like you mention, the future is definitely looking brighter for Dell. Is just too bad because the majority of us artist do work on Apple computers, including me. My question to you is, is it true that Dell will have 2 separate Dell Canvas on the market soon? A ( None Touch and a Touch version)? Is so, is this true?? Also is the Dell Canvas 4K resolution and will it work on an older iMac 2013? I'm pretty sure it has to do with graphic cards..... Man! Is just too bad (Apple) hasn't teamed up with (Wacom) yet to create the ultimate drawing tablet, WTF??? Apple is definitely lacking in innovation, especially from created minds like Steve Jobs who had always supported companies like Pixar and the Arts.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks ZW, glad you liked the update :D Seems like Jobs really was the only guy coming up with ideas over there. Since he passed away every decision they've made has been bad :O That's why I'm saying goodbye. I bought Apple because it worked so well but now the OS cracks are starting to show. There's no point in spending over-the-odds on a Mac any more when it just runs badly. Windows 10 is actually better. OSX has become too bogged down with rubbish that is almost impossible to get rid of - which is what they said they'd never do.
      I've not heard a thing about 2 versions of the Dell Canvas. What's your source on that? This has a touch on/off switch and at the price-point it doesn't seem worth them making two separate versions. Even Wacom are not doing that on their new Pro tablets or (I'm guessing) on their new flagship later this year. The rumor smells bad to me but I'd love to know where it came from all the same.
      The Canvas is QHD resolution: 2560x1440 so it's less than 4K but it was done so you can have it as part of a multi-screen set-up and not kill your GPU. People have said they'd like 4K but I think most people don't realise what that actually means. lol.
      Someone else had mentioned in the comments about artists being expected to use Macs but I haven't seriously run into that for about 5-10yrs now. The software & fonts are more compatible now.

    • @McCloud23892
      @McCloud23892 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Let me ask you something Lawrence, in all honestly, do you find the Dell Canvas better than your Wacom Cintiq?
      Is probably just another silly rumor about the (touch) and (none touch) on the Dell canvas that I read online maybe? IDK? I'm pretty sure your sources are more credible I would assume, that's why I'm asking... About 4K I also find it dumb because if you work in Photoshop, you can just design anything just by adding 3840 × 2160 resolution which is 4K and display your artwork on high res monitors =D
      As for all artist working on a Mac is just nonsense. I'm the type that doesn't mind using both. You'd be surprised how many hipsters here in NYC still adapt that silly notion about Artist using Mac's only. LOL! I grew up in Windows 98 XP on a shitty Gateway, so I know the struggle. lol

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At the moment no. I need my drawing tablet on an arm or a stand to fully use it. But that's just me. Other that that, yes! It works great.
      Creatives used to use Macs only because software (that nobody in the industry uses anymore and you might not remember depending on your age) like Quark Xpress couldn't transfer files between Mac versions and PC versions back in the day. Also, many fonts were either Mac only or PC only. These days we don't have these kinds of problems and a lot of studios & professionals don't class a piece of software as 'pro' if it can't cross platform. But this ended in the early 2000s. So anyone who says you have to use a Mac is either talking out of a hole or they work in a section of the industry I don't know about (possible of course). I'm happy to use both Mac & PC but I won't be buying Mac again for a long time. Not until they change their thinking and recapture their innovation. They've failed to listen to their users and they don't want to talk to us - only at us (when launching a slightly updated watch or phone).
      I used to build my own PCs back in the 90s but switched to Mac because I 'had to' for work. Plus I knew it was time to stop building when I got in too deep with water-cooled cases. It was nice being able to bu a super powerful Mac that just worked. But the OS is showing some major cracks now and Apple are falling behind in a massive way. Big shame. I hope they come back.

    As you stated in a previous videos annotation, DELL would be BONKERS not to make Apple drivers for the Canvas! This is the three in one device that creative Apple users have wanted for ever! If a Apple user could buy this and get the functionality of being able to draw & paint then go into Final Cut Pro X / Premier / Davinci Resolve and use the totems to skim then press down on the totem to bring up edit tools, or you use it the Canvas as a color grade interface. On that last point, tell the reps at DELL the look at the Black Magic Da Vinci Resolve control panel. That hardware starts at $995 USD and goes up to $29,995 USD. Then tell the reps at DELL that they can now sell Apple users a device that can Draw in Photoshop, Edit in FCP X or Premier, and replace the need to buy a $30K USD proprietary piece of hardware for $1,799 USD and watch these fly off the shelves! Please keep giving us any info on the Apple side that you can. Thanks for the videos. Cheers

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Herschelle. I've seen Black Magic / Da Vinci and it looks goods - It would be interesting to see where Dell would take that if they attempted it. I imagine that being a huge success. My only worry is that Dell is a PC company so there's a part of them that will naturally want users to move away from Apple. That's fair enough for them on a business side. If they offered more for creatives, would you just move to Windows? Microsoft is certainly opening up the doors these days and hardware wise PC's certainly have the upper hand. Let me know what you think & thanks for watching!

      Hello LAWRENCEcanDraw, I don't think I could switch Windows and here is why. The big reasons are security, privacy and stability.Let me explain what those mean for me. Security, No OS is perfect but Mac OS is still more secure than Windows 10. Privacy..because Windows 10 collects so much of my private data ( which I am not willing to give any company ) and the thing that grinds my gears is the fact that even when I turn off the data collectors, If I do a system update, the data collectors can be turned back on without my consent. So I can't get on board with that. And the last is stability. With Mac OS if Apple wants to let me know there is a new OS, I get a red bubble with a 1 that let's me I have an update. With Windows 7 users were constantly nagged with pop-ups and then when you finally update you still get nagging pop-ups. I have seen Twitch and TH-cam live streams brought down by Windows 10 pop-ups and updates. Also on the topic of stability with Mac OS, I don't have to worry about a forced OS update that can break plug-ins the can wreak my workflow. Don't get me wrong, I like some of DELL's kit ever since they went private ownership. The look and quality has been turning my head lately but the reason I can't switch is not DELL's hardware, it's Apple's software. Please let the DELL reps know that they have a lot of Apple user who are ready to lay down the cold hard cash, If they can deliver this product with stable / rock solid drivers for PS CC/Corel/AutoDesk Sketchbook etc..etc, Full Totem support for FCP X/ Premier / Nuke etc..etc ( I know the totem uses a Microsoft API but on the Mac OS side we want to press the Totem and bring tools and menus the same way, not just use them as fancy jog wheels ) Also let the reps know that Apple creatives buy DELL monitors as well to go with our MacBook Pros, and Next year out Mac Pros because they offer great value and usually more ports than Apple over priced monitors. So there is money to be made on the Apple Side. Hopefully the DELL reps listen. Thanks again for the videos and I really like the channel. -Cheers-

      You seem to know your stuff. But things like the notifications. I could say the same about Mac OS X. It constantly pops up and when you jump through hoops to turn them off they always reappear when the system restarts. I found Windows notifications to be easier to get rid of long term. Really it all comes down to personal preference and you have to actually try both to know what the differences are and which you prefer. Any OS can always be made more secure - even with additional software if needed.
      You sound like a true believer and I'm not here to change people's minds. I'm just explaining why I'm leaving Apple behind. At one point I would have strongly backed Apple in the OS fight but I just go with whatever is the best for my art and right now, Windows & PC manufacturers are amazing while Tim Cooke releases press statements promising more for Pro users in a year or so's time :O

    • @herschellebarber1675

      Hey LAWRENCEcanDRAW Don't get me wrong, I really REALLY considered getting a Surface Studio but when I looked at the Pros and Cons I just couldn't get on bored with Windows 10. I'm open to other OS platforms, for instance I run Untangle ( Firewall Distro ) on a home built computer and I built a NAS that runs Ubuntu server. And I still use Windows 7 for remote programming. So if the next version of Windows could remove the data collectors and not need additional software to secure it ( i.e Anti-Virus ) I would switch to get native support for the Canvas but as of right now, I think I'm going to stay on the BSD / Linux train until Microsoft can make an OS that feels like a true successor to Windows 7. As I said in my previous comment, it's not Apple hardware that keeps me, it's the software( and I'm not saying Mac OS is perfect ). If you can pass all this on to the people at DELL, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks again. -Cheers-

    Aw man I am waiting so much to hear about the vesa mount. I'm ready to sell my iMac and upgrade to a PC and Dell Canvas. Can you recommend the canvas over the 27qhd? I don't care about price, but the better rgb, better pen and totems seem to be a much better choice over the 27. Is there anything the 27 does better or would you recommend waiting for the canvas?

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like I said, they're two different experiences but the tech is basically the same apart from the Totems and the Remote. It's all personal preference and might depend on what kind of work you're doing. I say hold on for a little bit if you can. At least until I get info out about the VESA mounts etc.

    • @ItsLeeMcGuire
      @ItsLeeMcGuire 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mind explaining what you mean by two different experiences? Sorry to push but it's really interesting hearing your take on it having used both devices you're the best person I can ask for advice. My work is at http:LeeMcGui.re and I'm starting to do a lot of digital painting. Been using an iPad pro fr the last year but it's not powerful enough to do the file sizes I need for commissions now. I was going to get the Cintiq 27qhd until I heard about the Dell. Thanks for taking the time to reply to me. I'm not in the position to be able to test out both devices, in Scotland we can't even buy Wacom directly, have to use third parties

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It'll get worse up there if she takes you independent! My wife's Scottish so trust me, we keep an eye on it all. She's mad! lol. Sorry, not sure which side you're on - that might not go down well. haha. But I think I'm right in saying it'll be harder to get a lot of things or at least more expensive if you're not part of the UK or the EU.
      Anyhoo, the experience is really just a comparison. If you're not used to a Wacom Tablet with ExpressKeys (hotkeys) then you'll never know the difference. The Dell Canvas using the Totems and the onscreen software just made Windows feel a bit more tablet-centric rather than a big screen with a stylus done well. With the Wacom Cintiq, you don't realise you're using it after a while. The Expresskeys just become a part of your hand, so to speak. Really though, you could customise how you use both of these... using the ExpressKey remote with the Canvas or setting up Fences on your PC and using it with the Cintiq. So that 'experience' is a grey line for you to command.
      What drawing tablet are you currently using?

    • @ItsLeeMcGuire
      @ItsLeeMcGuire 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No tablet at all, all my drawing is on an iPad Pro 9.7 at the moment! Its getting frustrating on such a small device, especially now I'm doing actual commissions and the iPad is struggling with the digital sizes! First two pictures here are examples of what I paint - leemcgui.re/commissions
      I would buy the Wacom expresskey remote with the dell canvas anyway becasue that looks awesome, I'm looking to copy your fantastic setup and drill the ergotron arm into my desk too :) So i think its better to go with the canvas if everything works out. I'll wait on a comparison video between the canvas and the 27qhd (if you're still working on that). Do you find yourself using the canvas a lot or going back to the Cintiq?
      I think the general consensus is that Scotland are going to leave England only, and come back to the EU. I don't think anyone here wants to leave and become solely independent, rather that we were promised in the last referendum that by sticking together we would be better, then England forced us to leave the EU shortly after. So that lets us have a second referendum because of lies/broken promises, and now Scotland has been guaranteed entry to the EU. The last referendum was ugly though, lots of families and friends argueing over it and people rioting on the streets after. Politics is stressful man!

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you see my review of the iPad Pro. It basically says that it's no good because it can't use a real OS and therefore real apps like Photoshop & Painter. I like devices like this or (I prefer) the Surface Pro/Book etc because they are good companion devices but can't really be used as the only computer. They're better for sketching or working on the move. The 27" screen of either the Canvas or the Cintiq is great though. Brilliant for getting commissioned work done: www.lawrencemann.co.uk
      Well, you wouldn't just be leaving England. It's Wales and N Ireland too. Plus there is zero guarantee that Europe will actually let Scotland in - nothing is signed. You'd have to worry if they let you in at all, what kind of offer would you get. I personally see Greece all over again especially as Scotland (and the UK) would be very economically unbalanced at that time. If I were Scotland (imagine that) I'd make sure I got into the EU AND knew the FULL terms before I jumped out of the UK.
      The whole thing is ugly and all sides have lied but that's what politicians do. I worry about this issue of course and we'd hate to see Scotland leave. I don't think either of our countries would benefit from it at all. I think a lot of it just comes down to the fact that there are some people who just can't get rid of their hate.

    Wacom stylus (as most styluses) higher functions like tilt & press.sensitivity are very driver dependent, and I've heard from friends (digital artists) that multiple drivers even all of them from Wacom still can cause problems with each other. Unfortunately with Dell currently not supporting Apple officially :/ that's gonna be a problem for apple-users.
    I agree that should be actually really easy to fix, but it's gonna take time (I hope it's not going to be some stupid no-apples business decision!).
    However if you're going to buy new machine too, the just-about-to-be-released Dell XPS 15 2in1 (9575) and especially the NUC-Handes-i7-8809G (with Vega-M-GH) will be great combo with the Dell-Canvas (that's assuming you can live with the switch to Winloose ;)
    Both come with Thunderbolt ports (and the NUC-Hades actually has more ports than a high-tower desktop PC!) so connectivity or performance won't be an issue for sure.
    I can personally confirm that the previous Dell XPS15 (9550) & the NUC-Skull-Canyon were both excellent quality, so if Dell & Intel keep the effort and the high-quality needed to establish such high-end products the new models should be great.
    I'm certainly waiting for their public release and some initial tests/review (don't like nasty surprises :D) and I'm going to get such a combo.
    Btw I also consider some good med-size tablet (that's for the NUC-Hades scenario, since 27" monitor isn't exactly portable, and 2nd display is always welcome imho)
    Note that the NUC is a small portable PC! So it doesn't have its own battery! To be fully portable (ie laptop comparable) you'll need to at least carry your charger (or some people buy 2nd charger and leave one at home and one at office so they only carry the NUC itself /assuming you also have keyboard+mouse at both places which is easy & cheap enough/).
    It is possible to hook the NUC to a battery, but it won't be standard factory solution and it would require bigger (higher Voltage & higher Amps) powerbank (that issue is getting bigger with the higher consumption NUC-Hades /the old NUC-Canyon was ok with 80-90W at minimum 19V/4~5A ; but the new NUC-Hades only the CPU+GPU can take up to 100W, estimates for whole system could go to up to 130-140W, which leaves most powerbanks out of question :/ ... but with great power comes great power-consumption! ;)

      Wacom rotate, tilt, pressure etc work in a different way to everyone else's pen tech. Same as N'trig and Apple is different and everyone has them patented. That's why Wacom has batteryless tech which is a definite bonus. All tech is driver dependant though at some level.
      Dell is a PC company that makes and sells PCs. They want you to buy a PC. Why would they support Mac? That doesn't make business sense! I think it's fair even if we don't like it.
      I've got the 5520 with XEON processor and 32gb ram and that's awesome with the Canvas. I've also tried it with the Surface Book and a few other devices. Works great with practically anything being a QHD display.
      I've seen the NUC. Looks good. There's a few similar devices that look fun like that. I'd like to see a more powerful version - after all it's not exactly a Raspberry Pi so why not go all out and make it crazy powerful if they can!

      No, I don't have inside man :)
      Just today couple of detailed benchmarks were published (like from anandtech) and it looks good.
      Perhaps there's even more potential with faster SSDs than the ones Intel provided for the test (like the Samsung 960 pro for example), and perhaps some video drivers optimizations - in some real-life tests the Vega-M-GH falls where actually Intel claimed - between the gtx1060-MaxQ & the gtx1060 (much closer to the higher model gtx1060) in many tests however it's even faster than the gtx1060 and beats some systems with 1070 like against the Asus ROG Stryx GL502VS (i7-6700HQ & gtx1070). Usually has advantage in more CPU related tasks, of course the Vega-M-GH itself is not a gtx1080 competitor :)
      But for its size and the power-consumption it looks great!
      Its only major drawbacks seem to be related to some HTPC/Blue-ray usages, like UltraHD Blu-rays and missing 4Kp60 VP9 (so no TH-cam HDR support, but it still support 4K Netflix HDR just fine) - if these two things are factor for you (they aren't for me personally).
      It would be nice to see the NUC Hades (the Vega-M-GH model) tested with real-life content creation apps (not just synthetic tests), but with the stir it creates I expect there will be such test in the next few months.

      About the April shipping I think I've seen such info somewhere on simplynuc's site (which already takes pre-orders).
      But I would bet on end of April or even beginning of May to be more realistic.
      I'm curious however if there will be laptops with that use the i7-8809G later this year - it sounds perfect for workstation-ultrabooks, but so far the only one announced is the Dell XPS 15 9575, which have few shortcomings: uses the lower-end model i7-8705G (which CPU-wise is almost the same) but with the lower-end Vega-M-GL ... and for some reason Dell announced that it would support up to 32GB RAM, but seems like the first configuration will only have up to 16GB and that's non-upgradable since the RAM will be soldered to the mainboard (as in many ultrabooks). Still weird decision since the previous (same size-factor) XPS15 models had regular RAM slots.

    dude you are trying to use EMR pens on a AES screen thats why they dont work at all. any EMR pen should work on any EMR screen and so should any AES pen.

      Yup. I know! But people keep asking about which pens work and it's easier to do this on camera than explain the difference between EMR and AES. lol. Lot's of people know what the pens look like but don't know which tech each one uses.

    I wouldn't be surprised if someone hacked some drivers for mac and linux

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That might well happen if Dell don't create them first. Though hacked drivers are notoriously bad for getting updates etc so let's hope Mac users make enough noise to get Dell listening!
      I hadn't given a moment's thought to Linux. Probably because I don't know any artists who use it.

    How stupid to make a monitor that only works with Windows when the majority of creators use MACs:

      They are a PC company. Besides, who says the majority of creators use Macs. I'd love to see the hard data on that. 30 years ago maybe but I very much doubt it's true now. In fact I can tell you that there are a lot of big software companies that used to focus on Apple but now put more of their energies into Windows because, and I quote 'it's more creatively flexible' and I know that because it was said to me in a meeting.

      I think maybe it should have been made to work for both but as a company that makes PCs I understand their business decision. Would you slam Apple for making a product that wasn't compatible with a PC?

      Lawrence Mann absolutely, especially a monitor that’s geared toward a specific group of people. Not a smart business decision when your competition can be used on both MAC and PC.

      But Dell bout out an All-in-one that is way more powerful than the current iMac and they are clearly trying to capture the creative market. More and more creatives are moving to Windows now and PC companies purposely don't want to help Apple. Why should they help them out? That would just be bad business. The only person it makes sense for is Apple.
      They want you as a creative to see all of this new tech and want it so much that you switch over. That's what I did. Apple gave us a touch-strip and not touchscreen. I swapped over. PCs were giving us touchscreen and stylus laptops while the Macbook Pro was still years behind. Now I have a device I can use the Canvas with. It's only Apple who have lost out. On top of it all - I saved money too!
      I'll champion Apple again one day if they ever manage to bring it back but for right now they look more like a phone company than a creators company :(
