- If you want versatility without an astronomical price, you were probably considering a tiny crossover. Here are four of the best selling models in the US, let’s put them head-to-head and see which one comes out on top! Honorable mentions include the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, Kia Seltos, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross and probably a few I can't think of.

Another positive thing. Mazda offers 0% APR for 36 months on all new 2024.
Even the base model?
If you have good credit that is
That Honda HRV has a kisser that only a mother could love.🥴
Really? I like the style quite a bit.
@@Kev50027it’s a bit on the boring side.
When I was shopping around in 2022 & purchased my latest new vehicle to replace a problematic 2020 Toyota I wasn't happy with, the CX-30 was easily the best compact-sized crossover (IMO) in its price segment for people who still like/prefer smaller vehicles in this sad US market of no true subcompacts, limited true compact offering & mostly just large vehicles. I've been happy with my 2022 CX-30 CE for about 28 months now. Not a single problem or defect to report. I would consider the Lexus LBX (a true subcompact crossover) if they ever brought it to the USA - but I predict that they won't.
I'm a Toyota loyalist currently driving a Subaru. Toyota doesn't have that perfect vehicle for me right now. The 2001-2007 Highlander was the best thing ever. I still want one. The current Highlander is way too big, and the Rav4 is Just a few inches too small for the driver (me). The Crown Signia looks fantastic, but is over my budget. I ended up in a Subaru Outback, and honestly, if it holds up over time, i might be a Subaru convert. I really really like it. I like the styling of the Mazda a lot, i still have a soft spot for early 90s Hondas and therefore still keep an open mind for Honda... But right now, Subaru has my attention until further notice.
I like mazda cx30 but i hate the thick cladding but drive wise mazda is the best of them all. crostrick is good looking car. mazda cx5 owner here and I love it!!
The compact class is way better than the subcompact, even in fuel economy. Rav4, Rogue, HRV, Forester, and Tucson walk on these vehicles shown.
I prefer the uniform size of the Mazda cladding to the uneven lumpy/bumpy look of the cladding on the Crosstrek and Kona.
The Subaru crosstrek imo is better. More practical and very nice looking. Very quiet and nice ride. Smooth.
The laggy touchscreen that includes the climate controls is a deal breaker. If that screen is laggy now, imagine how horrible it's going to be 5 years down the line
Raised station wagon, no power, very bland styling.
I agree the Subaru is the way to go out of all these. Best one of the bunch in my opinion. The Subaru will go almost anywhere, rides amazingly, is reliable and super safe.
Thank you for including Subaru on the comparison. I feel so many other channels don't.
Anytime!
We had a rental 2024 Crosstrek Premium, as the Wife's 2020 Outback was in the shop, and I daily a 18 Forester 6MT. Gotta say, that Crosstrek was quiet, massive view, quiet, plenty of gettyup, quiet, easy fit two car seats, quiet, surprising amount of trunk space, and quiet. I considering a used third car, and that Crosstrek is making a lot of sense.
I hear a lot reviewers say that there is a good share of road noise in the Crosstrek but I remember riding in one and thought it was quiet and seemed built well.✌️
@@wackit6756 I spent about $350 and 15 hours sound proofing my base model Subaru Forester (and I have a ten+ part series on my TH-cam channel showing how I did it), so I am acutely aware of how loud a Subaru CAN be, and I was impressed with how quiet it was. I would say a large part of it was the CVT. When the engine is banging at 1700 rpms at highway speed, you BARELY hear the barely idling engine noise. 🤓👍
I’ll wait till Toyota and Subaru bring Toyota’s eCVT hybrid system to the Crosstrek before I’ll consider one.
I just test drove a 2021 Premium just yesterday and I kinda fell in love with how quiet it was! I got it up to 60 and the engine noise wasn’t too much and road noise was veryyy minimal. One of my top contenders next to the cx30
@@jakeywakey4424 Between the aerodynamic external shape, insulated boxer engine, and low-revving CVT, it's a quiet ride. And with AWD all the time, it still gets mid-30s for fuel efficiency? It's an easy recommendation from me, the random guy on the internet. 🤓👍
I know I'm howling at the moon here, but I'd buy the Honda - if it came with a manual transmission. As it is, since I live in a warm weather state and don't need AWD, I plan on buying a Mazda3 Hatchback with a manual.
I love my 2021 manual Mazda3 hatch, it's a wonderful fun car for daily driving, I love it more and more as I live with it and I already loved it a lot 😅. It's just so nice to drive.
Honda manual transmissions are great, and would probably make the HR-V a lot more fun.
My wife owns a CX-30, I own a 2023 Kona N. her car if you want something that has a bit of grunt but also feels luxurious Mazda is the way to go. Feels like you're driving a 70k car when you're in those things
I would go with the Crosstrek .
I was shopping for a vehicle until recently, considered both new and used. New colleague of mine had just purchased a CX-30 on the used market. I finally decided on a used CX5 as well. Car was in great condition and I paid little less than 20% more compared to their CX-30. So yeah I'd recommend considering the CX5 as well for not much more
Thanks for this comparison! I've been waiting for this. I wish the Buick Envista would've been the group though. I still want to see it how stacks up against the competition. But if/when Mazda finally updates its infotainment system, it's going to be unstoppable in this segment.
I’ll try to get one sometime, I’ve had difficulty getting some brands on board but Chevrolet has sent me a couple of cars, maybe they can spare a Buick sometime. Thanks for watching!
Mazda is the way
Until you realize that cost of ownership over 5 years for a CX5 is actually not really any more than a CX30 and you upgrade to the compact crossover class that tends to be better than subcompact in every category.
@@BoopSnoot agreed the 5 is better than the 30 they’re all super impressive
It’s smaller inside than the rest which goes a long way in this segment
@@davewilson7602 but what you don't need a big vehicle and you don't have a family ever
@@calebwany8422 But what is the advantage of going smaller? Better fuel economy? Nope, the Rogue is the largest passengers pace of the compact segment and gets 37mpg highway without even being a hybrid. The CX30 Turbo gets 30mpg, and the non-turbo 33mpg. Price? I priced out a CX-30 Sport in dark gray for $28,515. Priced out a '23 Rogue Sport for $29,400, but they have a $1K manufacturer rebate no-haggle so its $28,400, and its 225ftlbs of torque because its standard with a turbo the CX-30 doesn't come standard with turbo and so is only 186ftlbs. Length! Ah, now finally the CX-30 has a potential advantage, its 10" shorter so if you parallel park a lot (I literally never do) or have a garage that is extremely shallow (I don't), then that might make sense, because otherwise even if you drive by yourself you'll get more fuel economy and more space for folding down the seats for costco and home depot trips in the larger vehicle and it won't be any slower in spite of being bigger because it has more power.
HRV has below average powertrain and interior technology, by a huge margin. Its almost embarrassing IMO.
I agree and it’s noisy with a rough ride.
All of them need a competent and potent hybrid option. Idk why Mazda hasn't taken the Corolla Cross hybrid system and stuck it into a CX-30 which I feel like they could easily do at the Alabama plant. I'd buy that so quickly
Read somewhere the CX-5 hybrid is coming, but not sure when or if it’ll be available in North America. I’d sell/trade my current CX-5 in a heartbeat.
@@mindfullymellow2323 It's just a matter of time and Mazda is suuuuper super slow. They're a little too focused on PHEVs. Dave Coleman explained that once the battery is depleted, the PHEV system acts as a regular hybrid. So they can just take their PHEV hybrid system and shrink the battery and make a regular hybrid. It would significantly reduce the cost too as the PHEV is like $10k more expensive then their gas counterparts.
@@mindfullymellow2323 Yes and the CX-30 will probably close behind to receive a genuine hybrid engine. But I would be wary of buying it in the first year, I'd prefer to wait until they had time to sort out the inevitable gremlins. Which is why I'm buying an ICE one now.
Why would Toyota give them that when Toyota has the Corolla Cross Hybrid to compete?
@@worrywart1311 - oh, I’d wait until they worked out all the bugs. Bought the CX-5 because it’s a proven model and Mazda doesn’t play stupid markup games (the dealers in my area don’t).
CX30 all the way. Comes from a Mazda owner.
I have to say the 2.5L in the Crosstrek isn’t that bad for every day use. I’ve had no issues with merging, pulling out onto a highway from a full stop, etc. I’m even used to the infotainment screen and now I kinda like it (except the lag, the lag is awful). Amateur tip: use voice commands for adjusting climate control settings while driving, it’s much safer than using the screen.
Subaru drivers are good drivers
I assume Subaru head gaskets (2 on a boxer engine?) are no longer failing and there is no longer oil starvation in some driving situations.
Only RTV issues causing oil leaks. Look it up.
Thermo control valves are becoming a major issue on some 2019-2022 2.5 liter models.
Fortunately Subaru has extended the warranty on this specific part to 150k.
@@0HOON0 Thanks. Would prefer better engineering and quality control but extended warranty is better than nothing and beats law suits.
Are some of the LEDS on the Kona's front strip burnt out??? I am considering the Kona but seeing that in the video is making me re-think it. I'd go insane if an LED blew out.
Yes, pretty frustrating, Id definitely have a warranty on it while I owned it
No longer do Subarus suffer from head gaskets failing. Now they just use cheap RTV sealant in places they should've used real gaskets... So new Subarus are just bound to leak oil at some point, and is already becoming an issue if you look it up. Still better than a Hyundai IMO
the rear seal on the head gaskets leak a bit on the 2.0 honda engines too. It's not a HUGE deal and should be covered under warranty. But all modern engines are gonna burn old sooner or later unfortunately
@@midnitestate no where did i mention a rear seal. And that's a much more common and fixable problem. Subaru puts cheap RTV in a bottle all around to seal the engine casing, oil pan, and timing cover. Those should have real physical rubber/silicone.etc gaskets.
@@midnitestate hondas newer 1.5t engines are also blowing head gaskets. Fyi. But the 2.0s are still better than any subie engine.
Dude that's exactly what I tell everyone, the current mazdas are just so engaging to drive, my 2020 m3 hatch has a heavy ass weight to the wheel and it feels so dam good lol
Owned a Crosstrek. That CVT was horrible. Mazda easily. Won't touch KIA/Hyundai brand. Honda's are excellent but so slow.
I have the new impreza RS and it's much much better. The CVT is very responsive and smooth now
I went with the Honda HRV after test driving everything in this list. But I can't really recommend the HRV for long distance driving it's not as comfortable as others said it was.
If you dont mind about rear space the Mazda is the best
hopefully honda cleans up the front end on the hr-v for the mid-cycle refresh. 🤮🤮
I did cross shop. Mazda CX30 Turbo Premium won my wallet. Mazda is smooth, powerful, quiet. Interior is quiet, well put together. With the turbo it tops everything in this class.
This is awesome. Just last month I helped a family member buy her first new vehicle. The contenders Toyota Corolla Cross LE AWD, Mazda CX-30 GS 2.5 AWD, Honda HR- V Sport, Subaru Crosstrek 2.0 Touring. I suggested the Hyundai Kona 2.0 as an option but due to reliability concerns it was eliminated early. The winner... 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Touring in Offshore Blue!
Exactly why I wouldn't even consider the Hyundai knowing the very painful experience of a friend in forcing them to repair a major factory defect in the drive train while under warranty. When it was finally done, it was done incorrectly.
Newer Subarus lack real gaskets where they're vital in the engine, and have been replaced with cheap RTV sealant. So basically all new Subarus are bound to leak oil eventually. Look up rtv oil issues. Should've went with the Mazda or Toyota.
Was deciding between a Crosstrek and CX-5. Went with the latter because needed a little more space and got more for almost the same money. Eliminated Corolla Cross due to unreasonable ADM.
Advanced Download Manager is not important.
@@know916bound I provided that advice, I wasn't buying the vehicle. My preference was the CX-30
Hyundai Kona is too ugly. Like most Hyundais, being different just for different's sake, not necessarily a good thing in the long run. Mazda on the other hand, has classic beauty that will still look good 10 years from now.
Amazing was literally looking for this! Saw the 6mt video " if only a version for normies " 😅😂
Ig I have to see the Cx30 for my self…always got the front seats all the way back.
If you have them all the way back, the backseat would be merely a shelf
I would not get the Wilderness package just because of the price and the hit in MPGs
Acid Rap, good choice.
The only handsome of the four , a classic slik beautifull design... is the Mazda. In driving dynamics is also the best of all. It lacks a bit in terms of digital clusters etc... but it depends what are your priorities. Driving pleasure or impressive screens ! ??
Regards from Greece !
I would buy the Kona because it looks so cool, thanks 😀
The base engine is a dog on the highway. It just doesn’t have the cahones you need.
@@jimmy5634 Turbo 👍
@@jimmy5634 go for the EV
I can't get over the frustrating throttle mapping in the Subaru. It's almost like a switch rather than a pedal. Want to creep forward into a parking spot? It's impossible, it lurches forward like the dog you're required to own as a Subaru driver.
I'd take Mazda CX30 2.5 NA engine and 6spd.
Mazda Turbo Premium is a class above the rest of these vehicles. It has great handling, on par with the Mazda 3 - it is built on the same platform - and the Turbo puts out a powerful 250 horsepower. It has an upscale interior bordering on luxury class. A large screen, 12 speaker Bose with subwoofer and heads-up display.
The Honda sounds like my aunt Ednas sewing machine .
Runs like it too. Very disappointing from Honda.
😂😂
😅😂😅
@@jimmy5634but it’ll last forever with a bullet proof transmission 😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨
Mazda would be dominating if they just supersized their lineup. Do what VW did a decade ago and watch the sales skyrocket. If CX-30 was the size of HRV on thr inside, it would an absolute no brainer.
I like the HRV and drove the 2023. But the safety tests were not good enough. Mazda beat it hands-down
The newer HRV looks like a Ford Escape.
Mazda is the W
Crosstrek if normal offroad is included or Mazda CX-30 if the offroad is small.
Honda is less reliable and fun.
Subaru really f. By replacing all the physical controls by a huge screen. Remember, we cannot drive and use our phones at the same time, but having a giant tablet far from the drivers attention seems to be ok.
I agree that the driver attention is bad but they didn’t replace all of the physical controls, just some🤕
Mazda or Subaru
The new Kona is absolutely hideous. Hyundai really messed up big time. The last Kona looked much better.
CVTs 😖
CVT’s All suck!! Buy the Mazda 6 speed and be done! Mazda handles better as well
