Stuck on the side of the road, stressed the fk out, this video showed me to the problem. That arm that sits on the selector had popped off. Suddenly no gears. Blocking traffic mile back. Managed to get a push out of traffic and this video renewed my faith in God. A couple of cable ties to keep it on til I find a more permanent solution I'm good 2 go again. Thank you 🙌🙏💚

I found a guy in England who makes the Phosphor Bronze bushes for these gear selectors. They are specific to the MT82 gearbox. We are putting together a kit, which includes the seal, and white synthetic grease. I'll post here when it's ready.

Thank you very much! Its exactly the same problem and outcome I experienced.
Second wouldn't go in and 5th needed to push the lever down/right/forward to go in. Reverse slightly stiff.

you are an absolute legend mate! Great video! I'm really glad you made this video and ones like it. Liked and subscribed! I also repair cars but so far never done a van or something bigger. But I have a small issue and I'm really not sure if it's what you did in this video but just by what you said I think it might be worth a look. I have an 2016 Ford Transit Diesel 2litre 96kW 49,000km and it was all fine but today I went to pick up a VW polo on a trailer and got back and all of a sudden I can't put it in reverse,. Cant seem to find it maybe after 6-10 attempts but with difficulty, same as first and second, rest seem to be fine (3,4,5,6). But what is funny once driving sometimes the gears select fine. Clutch seems fine as no gear slippage, catches near top. On Monday I will have a closer look into what it could be. I'll check the selector cables first, then the selector like you did. If you have any advice or comments would love to hear them. Thanks Gerard legend

top top video, thanks a bunch, I'm hoping i wont need to go as far as this but it's really helpful to see what's going on internally even if I don't open it up myself. my only feedback is I'd love to see the bits you didnt show, like putting in the new bearing and reassembling the mech at the end. it might seem obvious (tap bearing in, reverse of disassembly) but as a beginner potentially taking on his first relatively complex repair it would give me extra confidence to see someone skilled do it first.
thanks again though, brilliant video. I wish your garage was my local!

Thanks man! I had i different problem with my shifter. But your video was also very helpfull to me! The bolt of the shift rod inside the transmission came loose. And fell down the oil sump. I could get it out with some wire and a magnet. Luckily nothing was damaged.
    Cheers!

I think I have the same problem with my MK7. The symptoms are almost identical. The problem was much worse when it was below -10 as well. It was impossible to get gears in. R, 1st and 2nd were the worst. Now that it is above freezing only 2nd is a bit stiff to get into gear.

    Absolutely brilliant video.
And great that your sharing your knowledge.
I think the same way if I can show someone how to do something I’ll share my knowledge.
To many people out there if I’m not getting the job at hand then no one is.
World would be a better place if Wee all had the thought of helping rather that keeping things away.
Great believer in me sharing my knowledge now will come back to me later in life.
Can’t wait until the next video

Very well documented, I enjoyed watching that. Hoping you can share more of your knowledge. Is that problem the same for Ford connect 2016 model? Gears are sometimes hard to select expecially when the vehicle is not driven for a couple of days. I can't find nothing relevent for this model. Cheers

    same transit as yours.
It began with gear 2 taking 2 times to change sometimes. Now i get situations when at traffic light and can not change any gear some times and then after a minute or so after restarting engine and pressing gears and clutch it all works again.
i happen few times a day on some days.
Inside van nothing leaking arround pedals.

Do you do this as a job and how much for ford focus 09 mk2 2l diesel can not get first second or reverse . Unless I go from 3 to 4 first have to leave the car in first gear over night just feels like someone's put sand in there until the car warms up I would appreciate you getting back to me

I know this is an old video. Hope you will still get this question. I've taken my gear selector out, everything is moving freely, I'm having trouble getting it into 5th and reverse. I'm having to get someone to move gears in the van, the only way to get it into gear is for me to lift the selector as the other person is putting into gear. Could this be a cable issue or something else? I have ford transit 2001 5gears

Hi Geard love your videos. I have problem like in video, also told I need a new clutch. How do you know for sure if the mechanic actually puts in a new clutch and not a second hand one, as job is covered up when finished, please advise, thanks Joe

    • @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage
      @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for your kind words Jess,
Firstly you must not trust your mechanic, which means maybe you should find a new one you.
Ask for proof of purchase and warranty, any garage will back their work when fitting a new clutch for min 6 months.
only other real way is clutch engagement point, you will have a high engagement point on a worn clutch and a low one with a new one (on the clutch pedal). I hope this helps.

I have to do this fix very soon, but I'm not going to replace the roller bearings with same. It's a piss poor design from the factory and I intend to have some phosphor bronze bushes made to replace the entire roller bearing setup. That is a poor design and not the right job for roller bearings. The shaft doesn't turn that much so roller bearings are wrong. The phosphor bronze will do a far better job of handling the side loads and the dirt and bearing wear won't score the shaft. Once done, it will last longer than the car. There's a reason why so many owners on InnerTube have had the same issue. Piss Poor, or over design.
