this is actually crazy... have my gears getting progressively stickier over 10 years... asked mechanic a few times if there was anything to do... and just get a shoulder shrug so stopped asking.. But I know the gears are solid once engaged and the car has been driven super careful and calm the whole time... now I have to try this.
Rick The Spud, you're my favorite person today (and probably this month). Saved me at least a couple hundred at the dealership nearby. Thank you very much!
I have the same on a Sierra 5 speed box in a 22 year old but low mileage Caterham. The oil level in the box is fine though very hard to access but the shift is terrible.I'll have a look....
You absolute legend! This just happened to me on the way to an important gig we are playing. Limped to halfords on the way and this worked a treat! Thank you so much!
Ah amazing! Definitely a cheaper quicker fix! 😉 As payment make sure you subscribe, tell your friends, and go and check out my other vids and share your favourite one... 👊😎
I have this very van, and although my gears seem absolutely fine, I'm going to have a check of the linkages and then save this video for the future.. Thank you 👍
Bought a 2012 focus today and noticed the shifter stuck on side to side. I figured I could do the same thing with wd 40 to help clean it out and then add some lube after that and it will be much better. I love these little tricks that are very basic but yet most people don’t think to do it
Funny how i search stiff gear linkage and Ford transit video comes. It could a common ford transit issue. I have the same problem on my 2017 transit. I will give this a shot. Thank you.
Could do, won't take 2 minutes and a can of spray grease to find out, but I would think if it was 4th it would also be all the gears in that direction ie 2nd and 6th too.
Greetings from the Philippines Sir🫡 i love your video, showing the exact problem and the solution instantly🫡 sincerely love it. Hope this will work on my Mitsubishi 2 door gsr later❤
What if it's somewhat harder to get into first gear, possibly a synchro issue, will applying this grease allow for a smoother shift into first gear and how long does the greese application last, 1 month, 2 etc..?
This is amazing! Thank you, I’ve just done this on my Audi A1 and it worked perfectly, saved me a ton of money 🥰 my dad couldn’t believe I’d fixed it all by myself ! 😂
I’ve recently changed the gear linkage cable but now the gears get stiff after driving for a while. Think this could be the problem? Or something else?
My gearstick becomes stiff after going into reverse is this worth a try dude? Gears and gearbox are fine(i hope) its only moving the stick back to neutral 🤔
@RickTheSpud will doo sir thanks again. Will update on the progress. Goes into all the gears fine and the clutch peddle is all good it just gets stuck when trying to stick it back into neutral. Almost like something os blocking the movement 🤔
@@RickTheSpud It did not, So i've been lying to myself saying '''It needed a clutch replacement, anyways" I will try this WD40 thing on my next oil change
Just saved me a lot of time and effort - I now have more than 3rd and 4th gear again!
Haha. Yes mate!

Lack of maintenance in most cars cost people lots of money. Great video and no silly music. Legend😊
True dat. Although I'm not even sure something like this would be part of a service, it definitely should be. A little squirt goes a long way... 😜

Also good to grease the gear linkage on your gear stick too, why these basic things are not done on a service I will never know 🤷♂️
Yep, agreed 👊
Wheres that at?
Bottom of the gear stick if you can get to it, and the linkage underneath or in the engine bay as per this video... 👊😉
I have this very van, and although my gears seem absolutely fine, I'm going to have a check of the linkages and then save this video for the future..

Tbh it's so easy I'd just do it anyway, I just did mine again the other day just to be safe. 💪😎

No it won't sort a gearbox issue, only if the linkage is stiff. Try it by all means, doesn't take long... 👊😉

Excellent work but how to solve same issue for automatic transmission
Thanks mate. Assuming there's some sort of linkage on the gearbox it should be the same. Your's jammed?

I’ve recently changed the gear linkage cable but now the gears get stiff after driving for a while. Think this could be the problem? Or something else?
Seems unlikely but worth a try. Something getting hot and getting tight or seizing up?
got the same, its fine first 30-50 km then its get really hard.
Dunno. Try this and see what happens...
Thank you so very much. This video is so very helpful.🙏🙏🙏

Thank you mate you just save my life
Oh really! It worked?
Rick would it be that if my transit will not go into first gear i will be trying this tomorrow
Very potentially. But I would have thought it would be stiff for 3rd and 5th as well. But definitely worth a try. 👊
What does he use to spray it ?
Lithium grease as it'll last longer, but ideally penetrating oil like WD40 first if it's seized. But basically anything!
@@RickTheSpud thanks, in my country theres no video, i thought its WD40 but i dont want to ruin something, Thanks !
No video? What country you in?
You won't hurt much with WD40. Spray grease afterwards. 👊

How long did this last.
Haven't touched it again since this video. I'll prob do it again before winter when they salt all the roads, seems to start it going stiff. 👊
awesome thanks mate.
That get you sorted?
you would think ford would of put a felt pad around that shaft or a dust shield or just a seal .
I think there's a seal, but the bit that's exposed just goes rusty. Not sure what it's like on other setups? 🤷♂️
My gearstick becomes stiff after going into reverse is this worth a try dude? Gears and gearbox are fine(i hope) its only moving the stick back to neutral 🤔

Get someone to move the gear stick, you might be able to get to it from the engine bay. Use spray grease, it lasts longer. 👊
@@RickTheSpud I will definitely do that. Thanks a lot, mate !!!

You need penetrating oil mate
Yeah prob should have started with that to be fair as there was no movement. If there's any movement at all, go straight to the grease!
