It's an easy mistake to make with so much history, dates, season numbers, comic issues, etc, with over 80 years of history and lore. It in no way made the video any less enjoyable or in depth. Official DC documentaries make worst mistakes (e.g. Kevin Smith spouting inaccurate Batgirl facts). You can tell a lot of work and love went into it. 🙂

Wow, I had no idea Superman had so many iterations. No wonder it took an hour to get through them all! I found the early history especially fascinating. Weird to look back and imagine a time when Superman was a brand new character. It feels like he's existed forever. Very interesting that it took the creators so long to land on the right concept to make him a success. It made me think of the old writing advice, "Don't fall in love with your first idea." Part of creativity is being flexible, and the creation of Superman was clearly an example of that. Thanks for another great video!
While I may not be a huge Superman fan, I did enjoy the video and its detailed history on not only the character but the production and early concepts behind it. Can't wait for more videos like these!
Superman; alongside Spider-Man, were the two defining characters of my childhood. Watching the first Superman movie with Christopher Reeve on my old VHS was like watching a comic book come to life; ever since then I got hooked. This character means the world to me and I'm glad he made an impact for me and every other fan :3
This was a fantastic voyage of an Evolution!!! So much time and care went into this, I greatly appreciate the history, the creators and cultural impact covered in this video! This needed to be a great length to touch the milestone of this incredible icon!
This is EXCELLENT and shows that you really did your research! I've heard bits and pieces of Supes origins but you put in the work and didn't engage in amateur speculation! BRAVO!

Great episode, Dave FYI you forgot the part about when Joe and Jerry lost their rights to superman and the story of how they got it back in 1975, but overall, it’s a really good episode!
Thank you! I didn’t forget it - I simply decided not to include it. The video is 55 minutes as it is, and that would have made it _at least_ 15 minutes longer. Sometimes you have to cut things for the sake of time and pacing.
I absolutely love this! I hope the pop culture evolution proves popular for you! I can tell you put a lot of work into them! Thank you! I'll be watching!
Superman holds a special place in my heart as one of the few fictional characters, alongside Batman and Spider-Man, who truly inspire me to strive for personal growth and bring positivity in my interactions with others.
Wow! You put so much work into this! And it comes across as so professional and official-like. I can't imagine how much time it took for all that research and putting together all that editing and just wow! Fantastic work!
Cavill is so good. The ZSJL just reconfirmed that. Simply the best. I can't wait to see more of him on the big screen. I have a feeling they were just waiting to see how ZSJL went... and since it looks like its doing well, I think we'll hear good news soon.
Dave, dude, I feel like a Superman pro now!!! Love this, I’ve done some deep dives into the lore of Superman but there was a lot in the video I didn’t know! Did the production as well - with the comics landing down on the smooth backdrop! Another great video, Dave!!!
It's a real shame we never got to see Tim Burton's Superman Lives film. Apparently an animated version of the film was considered, but also never got made.
Dave you try doing the pop culture of the "Thomas Dam Troll dolls" they were very popular in the 80's until they made their big comeback in 2016 for DreamWorks Animation.
Feels like the comics got kind of forgotten once you got to the DCAU, despite several reboots taking place in-between. Videogames like Injustice also see some pretty impactful iterations. But overall you got the best and important stuff in a nice coherent narrative
In a way, The Death of Superman was the biggest and most prolific death of a fictional character since Sherlock Holmes' fateful encounter with Professor Moriarty at Reinbach Falls. I grew up reading different eras of Superman but my favorite is the underrated Bronze Age era especially written by Elliot S! Maggin who in my opinion written the best comic Superman and the best comic Lex Luthor, him writing and Curt Swan on art were a criminally underrated comic creative team that doesn't get much love from comic fans. Maggin also written two great Superman novels, Last Son of Krypton and Miracle Monday, which have audiobook version read by Maggin on his Elliot Makes Stuff Up podcast for free. He also written two short stories, about Krypto the Superdog and one which is his take on a "final" Pre-Crisis Superman story called An Enemy's Gift aka. Luthor's Gift.
My favorite comic character getting his own Evolution video? SUPER! Since this series involves pop culture characters, does that mean we might get videos on characters like Zorro or Sherlock Holmes? (that last one is going to be a long video)
Watching this again weeks later, its still dope man. Hope you continue. I saw very few mistakes in research and the editing was superb. Or should I say it was SUPER, man.
39:28- plus a certain House of Mouse acquiring ABC at the time L&C S4 was airing. As for the cliffhanger, it would be the first of many teases of a Super Offspring before canonically happening in 2015
This was amazing! I grew up watching the old superman shorts from the 40s and Superman: the Animated Series from the 90s. I loved it sooo much! Same for Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. Those were the coolest shows to watch in my childhood. I also watched Young Justice as a kid, and have always loved the animation of DC's animated universe. The DC Superhero Girls 2019 version of superman is probably my least favorite, because they made him (and Bruce Wayne) more of a self-centered jerk. But I'm glad to finally know what DC means. And my mom loves the live-action Wonder Woman. And we would watch the 1970s Superman movies.. So yeah, Superman was a big part of my life. Thanks Dave.
I love all of your evolution videos, especially Betty Boop (it taught me so much I, as a long time fan, never knew about her). But, this is my favourite so far. I'm a huge DC nerd, but, again, this video taught me so many things I never knew about Superman's history and was so entertaining, as always. Thank you. 🙂
Ok firstly, clearly there were comic characters prior to Superman. I mentioned many of them. Even Popeye had his own solo comic before Superman. While Alley Sloper is considered the first character to get a solo title, we need to distinguish the difference between “comics” ie strips and magazines, and “comic books” - the digest-sized books we know today. No need for the condescending, passive aggressive comment here. I hope this wasn’t your only takeaway from this nearly-hour-long video.
It seems as if the more they try to make Superman "grittier and more grounded" the more distorted the character becomes. He's supposed to be an ideal - the perfect hero, sent from Krypton to help the Human race to become better. Supposedly, Snyder was going to get his version of Superman to this point by the 4th film, but since those films will never be made, we have a pretty brutal and un-heroic Superman on the Silver Screen now. I'm afraid of what they will do to the character next. Great job on this detailed and fabulous history of the character! You unearthed some obscure gems, like the Torchy Blane connection. Thanks for sharing all of this information.
The ideal perfect hero seems to have appeared in the Donner movies and the 80’s comics where the Superman in the golden age and silver age shown him more aggressive and reckless even sometimes a jerk like anyone else. Snyder based his movie interpretation on the golden age Superman for man of steel and new 52 origin has some modern version aspects of golden age like fighting social issues.
@@legoben98productionsNo. The Golden Age showed Superman as a firm but fair hero who wasn’t afraid to get his hands somewhat dirty to help those in need. Not a jerk. Learn more about my man before you open your mouth.
@@Kal-El207 the silver age literally has Clark adopt Jimmy Olsen just to make his life miserable for a reason to why he can’t have jimmy around all the time, causality gaslight and emotionally abuse Lois to keep her away from him as Superman, literally held a glass of water mocking aquaman in the middle of the desert, etc… golden age era Superman is more heroic than silver age yeah, but he literally had a “war against cars” just for road safety, destroyed ruin down housing so that they would have to build a new more up to code for the citizens of the area, he was more reckless and more of a chaotic good (the best kind of heroic good). I know more about Superman than you expect, it’s rude to just gatekeep like you just did.
Well done on mentioning most of the important stuff from Supes history (although I would have covered the early seventies comics soft reboot in more detail (with Clark as a TV newsreader and such.) My only suggestion other than that would be that if you had covered everything in strict order it would have been more clear to viewers when one thing had led to another (for example the New 52 version ditching his red trunks led to him losing them in the Man of Steel movie. Or the Death of Superman coming out of the delayed wedding on the Lois & Clark show.)
Real fans knew this was coming because they heard it from the podcast! Pop culture evolution popin off 🔥 Superman Returns failed because it had some major pacing issues and barely any action, 2 hrs and 45 min where donner movies where around 2 hrs!
Not sure if TH-cam would allow you to show or mention it, but SuperMan also stared in a few 2D animated PSA commercials in the late 80s animated by Richard Williams. It was an anti-smoking ad featuring a villain called Nick-O-Teen. SuperMan comes in to save the day also quoting the slogan “Never Say ‘Yes’ to a Cigarette!”
Wow this video was amazing. Probably my favourite evolution of yours (tom&jerry and pete in close second 😂). Can't wait to see more of this series! Maybe an evolution of Spider-Man in december before No Way Home? (you know I love that character 😂, remember that comic I sent you years ago)
I am glad you posted a message about this video as it did not appear on my notifications. Lots of information here. Love that Australian “long a” drawl on things like - Daaakside and Maartian Manhunter.🤭
In the comics, Superman, then Superboy, met Lex BEFORE moving to Metropolis. When a piece of Kryptonite fell to Earth in Smallville while Superboy was playing in the field outside the Kent farm, Lex used a bulldozer to remove it, thus saving his (Superboy's) life. In return, Superboy helped Lex build his first lab, after which he (Lex) vowed to find a way to make his new friend immune to Kryptonite. However, while he was working on doing this, there was an explosion in his lab. Superboy saw the smoke but instead of first using his x-ray vision to make sure that Lex had managed to escape, he (Superboy) simply blew the smoke back into the lab which only made things worse by most likely causing Lex to lose his hair. After that, Lex vowed that he would find a way to kill Superboy.
I grew up with George Reeves as well. As a kid I never missed an episode. I found George a good hearted Superman, but as I grew older Christopher Reeve became the one and only Superman for me.
Fascinating however there is at least one mistake in what you reported, the mistake in no way took away from the video and I only mentioned it because it had a bearing on the show in question. That being "Smallville" you quoted the start of the series as being 2006 this is not correct Smallville started in 2001, this detail is important because they used (sort of) the events of 9-11 to explain the Whitney Fordman character's departure after actor Eric Johnson began getting death threats for keeping Clark and Lana apart. They wrote it in that Whitney decided to join the military after graduating in response to the World Trade Center attack.
I think there is a little mixup with dates: if the first Superman by Fleischer came out in 1941, how come Popeye was "over a decade in production"? His short started in 1933.
I remember, back in the late '70s-early '80s, going to the library and I found a big book of all Superman comics in it. I don't remember when it was published, but I really liked that book. Checked it out many many times. We (including cousins too) had a box of comics out at grandpa's farm house to help keep us kids entertained. We didn't have extra money & we got what we got, so the continuation of his story line became muddled....a lot...lol. It marked the time in my life that comics meant less and less to me. Don't get me wrong, I still like comics & a really good story...lol. Just could not afford to catch up on it. I never got into the TV shows...don't know why. Superman I, II, III, I liked & that new one, Man of Steel, was good too (had no $$ at the time so I had to wait & rent it...lol). Now can just barely afford the internet...so no movies unless it's on Netflix (only have that thanks to my daughter...she's to good to me)...I guess I really don't need it. With all that said.....Thank you for making this video....it helped to put somethings in place for me....Thanks again! I hope everyone will have a great day & please be safe. :)

I didn’t forget it - I simply decided not to include it. The video is 55 minutes as it is, and that would have made it _at least_ 15 minutes longer. Sometimes you have to cut things for the sake of time and pacing.
@@DaveLeeDownUnder As the producers of the Superman films could tell you:
You have to save something for the sequels.
I absolutely love this! I hope the pop culture evolution proves popular for you! I can tell you put a lot of work into them! Thank you! I'll be watching!
13:44 Captain Marvel as in, Shazam!
13:46 Namor: Am I a joke to you?
I'm confused I never seen an Evolution of video that's nearly an hour long. Love the video Dave Great Work :)
He did a poll about a month ago asking if we would be OK with a longer video if the character deserved it & we voted yes. It's worth it🙂
@@LivinMyJeffLife Oh I wasn't here for the pole I guess I missed that was it in the Community Tab on his TH-cam channel?
@@digitcreamarepugbabies Yes it was:) Those are easy to miss though.
What about his video on Betty boop?? That one lasted 40 minutes If I remember correctly
Uhhh I have some bad news...
@@Marvelfanatic3658 Or maybe good news, depending on rather you like the Calvin era
Dave, dude, I feel like a Superman pro now!!! Love this, I’ve done some deep dives into the lore of Superman but there was a lot in the video I didn’t know! Did the production as well - with the comics landing down on the smooth backdrop! Another great video, Dave!!!
Thanks heaps, Leo!! Super glad you enjoyed it!
Dude this is great! I can't wait for more. Its so fitting that you started with the Hero who inspired them all.
I finally got around to seeing this. Great video! Nice work, Dave! You took a really awesome deep dive on my favorite hero.
Great job on this one Dave! I can tell it took a lot of work.
The one I’ve been anticipating the most
And now we have My Adventures With Superman voiced by Jack Quaid
It's a real shame we never got to see Tim Burton's Superman Lives film. Apparently an animated version of the film was considered, but also never got made.
Nicholas Cage was a lousy choice for Superman. Did Burton pick him?
@@dleet86 I’m not sure. You know he’s a huge Superman fan and I’m sure really would have been decent.
Wow, that was a lot of material to cover. Great overview. I'm a huge comics fan but even I learned some new things from this video. Well done.
Fantastic work, sir. It flew by and was thorough at the same time.
Thank you!
An HOUR long evolution video?! Hmmm, makes sense for someone as SUPER as him...XD
(I’ll see myself out)
Yeh there was a lot to unpack with him.
One of the greatest comic book superheroes of all time.
That’s right.
Just a heads up that there’s flashing lights in some of the animated segments.
This looks like it took a lot of time and effort but I hope you'll do more POP CULTURE EVOLUTION episodes in the future.
Watching this again weeks later, its still dope man. Hope you continue. I saw very few mistakes in research and the editing was superb. Or should I say it was SUPER, man.
This is the very first episode of Pop Culture evolution.
Yep. And what a beauty it is.
Thanks.
26:27 ...That mort Weisinger guy looks like Paul Heyman.
That was incredibly detailed and interesting. Some things I knew but not all. The dogs superman series would've been hilarious!!!
I love all of your evolution videos, especially Betty Boop (it taught me so much I, as a long time fan, never knew about her). But, this is my favourite so far. I'm a huge DC nerd, but, again, this video taught me so many things I never knew about Superman's history and was so entertaining, as always. Thank you. 🙂
Thanks so much Christopher, I really appreciate that!
I am a DC"nerd"myself, all because of the Super Friends

He’s my Favourite superhero. He’s the one I grew up with.
I grew up in the 90s, and loved watching Lois & Clark
I did too and it was great better than The Adventures of Superman
You maybe need to look up, "Alley Sloper" before you go saying Superman was the first character to solo a comic title.
How the hell is there only 560 likes? This deserves so much more.
Yes it does.
Just you wait,it may have more after this
It seems as if the more they try to make Superman "grittier and more grounded" the more distorted the character becomes.
Great video 👍
Bro this deserves way more views. And your knowledge is fantastic. That's why I subscribed and I'm glad I did. God bless and Jesus loves you bro.

Great job and effort, Dave!
OMG I didn't know that he is younger than bugs and daffy on 1 or 2 years :0
ALSO THIS SHOULD BE ON TENDING all of these facts are awesome !
Mr. Superman vs Mr. Batman
Superman is my favorite superhero I got to say.
That was an awesome extensive deep dive into the character.
I Like How Superman Start Out as a Bad Guy, Nice Touch for The World's First Ever Super-Hero
You should make a batman evolution video
Real fans knew this was coming because they heard it from the podcast! Pop culture evolution popin off 🔥
Superman Returns failed because it had some major pacing issues and barely any action, 2 hrs and 45 min where donner movies where around 2 hrs!
Superman Vs The Elite and All Star Superman deserved a mention instead of Superman: Brainiac in my opinion as both were better films than that one.
What a insightful video. Beautifully done!
Amazing job Dave!
Great video! Love superman! will you be doing batman next? 👀
Cool video. Note: Pretty sure Smallville Premiered in 2001. Not 2006.
George Reeves is still my Superman, ever since I was a little boy.
I grew up with George Reeves as well. As a kid I never missed an episode. I found George a good hearted Superman, but as I grew older Christopher Reeve became the one and only Superman for me.
Finally got around to seeing this. Well done, David.
I bet those pre-Action Comics Superman comics are worth a fortune.
good video man
Fascinating however there is at least one mistake in what you reported, the mistake in no way took away from the video and I only mentioned it because it had a bearing on the show in question.
Fantastic work guys!!!
It would be cool around Halloween you could do a Horrror movie character for the evolution.
Maybe the Addams Family
Or maybe Jason from Friday the 13th
I think there is a little mixup with dates: if the first Superman by Fleischer came out in 1941, how come Popeye was "over a decade in production"? His short started in 1933.
I think he means that Popeye shorts had been in production for over a decade
I am reading a book at the moment of the history of DC and how it started i did not know that DC first superhero was superman I’m am not a big fan of superman or Lois so I’m sorry if you guys are but i thought Batman was the first superhero, but what you said about superman is exactly what they said in the book with the creators of superman to the comics to his origin story so Thankyou for this more information on superman it gave me more of an in depth and sight with superman thanks.
